Most Sony ULT Tower 5 Bluetooth problems are fixed without a reset: charge the speaker, identify whether its blue indicator is waiting for pairing or already connected, pair from the source device while nearby, then reduce radio interference. Repeated dropouts usually improve when Sound Connect is set to Prioritize Stable Connection. Audio delay is different: Sony warns that wireless interference can add latency, and LDAC can introduce a noticeable delay during video playback. The guide below separates pairing, interruptions, lip-sync, and Stereo Pair problems so you can apply the shortest safe fix first.
What do the ULT Tower 5 Bluetooth indicator lights mean?
The blue Bluetooth indicator tells you whether the speaker is discoverable or connected. A double-flashing blue light means the speaker has no usable pairing information or is waiting for a new pairing. A steady blue light means a Bluetooth connection has been established.
| Indicator behavior | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Double-flashing blue | Pairing mode; no pairing information is available or the speaker is awaiting pairing. | Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, tablet, or computer and select ULT TOWER 5. |
| Steady blue | The speaker has an established Bluetooth connection. | Choose ULT TOWER 5 as the active audio output if the source is connected but silent. |
Sony’s quick-start guidance says the indicator changes from flashing to lit when pairing succeeds. Do not treat a steady light as an invitation to pair with a second device; first check which source currently owns the connection.

How should I prepare the speaker before troubleshooting?
- Charge the speaker. A low battery can trigger automatic shutdown. Connect it to power and allow it to charge before testing Bluetooth again.
- Power it on and watch the indicator. Wait for the light pattern to settle before opening the source device’s Bluetooth menu.
- Keep one source active. Temporarily switch off Bluetooth on other nearby phones, tablets, and computers. A previously paired device can reconnect first and make the speaker appear unavailable.
- Put the source close to the speaker. Use a short, unobstructed path during initial pairing; troubleshoot range and interference only after a basic connection works.
These checks prevent a low-battery shutdown or an unexpected reconnection from being mistaken for a failed pairing procedure.

How do I pair the Sony ULT Tower 5 with a phone, tablet, or computer?
Pair from the source device while the speaker’s indicator is double-flashing blue. The menu names vary by operating system, but the process is the same.
- Turn on the ULT Tower 5 and confirm the Bluetooth indicator is double-flashing blue.
- On the source, open Settings, then Bluetooth (or Bluetooth and devices on Windows).
- Wait for the available-device list to refresh and select ULT TOWER 5.
- Accept a pairing confirmation if the source displays one. Do not select a similarly named device from another room.
- Wait for the indicator to change from flashing to steady blue, then play a short audio clip.
If the indicator is already steady, the speaker is connected to a source. Disconnect that source or turn off its Bluetooth temporarily, then return to the Bluetooth menu on the device you actually want to use.
Why won’t my ULT Tower 5 pair?
Most failed pairings come from the speaker being connected elsewhere, the source being too far away, or another radio device taking the connection. Work through these causes before attempting any reset.
Another device reconnects first
Turn off Bluetooth on nearby devices that have used the speaker before. Keep only the intended phone, tablet, or computer active, restart Bluetooth on that device, and select ULT TOWER 5 again.

The source cannot see the speaker
Move the source close to the speaker and wait for the double-flashing indicator. If the light is steady, the speaker is not advertising for a new pairing; free the existing connection first. Close and reopen the source’s Bluetooth settings so it performs a fresh scan.
The source sees the speaker but pairing fails
Remove the ULT TOWER 5 entry from the source’s saved Bluetooth devices, then scan again while the speaker is in pairing mode. This clears a stale record without changing unrelated speaker settings.
A reset seems tempting
Sony’s current ULT Tower 5 help pages reviewed for this procedure do not publish a model-specific factory-reset sequence. Avoid button combinations copied from another speaker model: an incorrect sequence can change a setting without solving the Bluetooth problem. Exhaust the charge, indicator, proximity, and competing-device checks first.

Intermittent sound is usually an air-path or radio-interference problem rather than a failed pairing. Improve the physical connection first, then change the connection-quality setting.

Clear the radio path
- Keep the source in line of sight of the speaker where practical.
- Move the source or speaker away from walls, large metal objects, and dense furniture.
- Do not place a person, computer chassis, or other body-sized obstruction directly between the source and speaker during testing.
- Separate the setup from Wi-Fi access points, microwaves, and other electromagnetic sources.
- Reduce competing Bluetooth activity by pausing unused accessories and temporarily disabling Bluetooth on nearby devices.
Test after each physical change. If the interruptions stop when the source is moved, restore devices one at a time to identify the source of interference.
Select Prioritize Stable Connection in Sound Connect
- Open the Sound Connect app with the ULT Tower 5 connected.
- Open Bluetooth Connection Quality.
- Select Prioritize Stable Connection.
- Play the same audio that previously skipped and observe whether interruptions continue.
Sony describes this option for unstable connections and frequent sound interruptions. Ambient conditions can still cause occasional breaks, so the setting is not a guarantee in a crowded radio environment.
Check whether the source is the variable
Play a locally stored track, then try the same speaker from a second source if one is available. A dropout that follows one phone or computer points to that device’s radio environment or codec choice; a dropout that follows the speaker after the path is clear warrants Sony support.

| Codec | What Sony establishes | Practical troubleshooting implication |
|---|---|---|
| SBC | Supported baseline A2DP codec. | Use when you need the simplest, most conservative compatibility path, especially in Stereo Pair. |
| AAC | Supported A2DP codec. | Can be a middle option when the source offers it and LDAC is unstable or introduces delay. |
| LDAC | Supported A2DP codec; at the specified 990 kbps or 909 kbps settings it carries approximately three times more data than SBC. | Higher data throughput can improve music detail, but Sony specifically warns that video playback using LDAC may have a delay and that interference can interrupt transmission. |
If music is clean but video is out of sync, or if interruptions appear only with LDAC enabled, choose a lower-latency or more stable codec mode on the source. The exact control is different on each operating system; look in the connected device’s Bluetooth audio options rather than changing random developer settings.
How do I fix lip-sync delay on the ULT Tower 5?
Bluetooth audio is not guaranteed to be perfectly synchronized with video. Sony states that signal interference can delay playback and specifically notes a slight delay when viewing videos with LDAC audio. The goal is to reduce the causes of delay, not to expect a universal millisecond value: Sony publishes no independent latency figure for this speaker.
- Move the source and speaker closer together. Use a clear path and remove nearby radio obstructions.
- Reduce wireless competition. Pause unnecessary Bluetooth devices and move away from busy Wi-Fi or electromagnetic sources.
- Test without LDAC. Select AAC or SBC when the source permits, or choose its lower-latency/stable Bluetooth mode. Compare the same video after each change.
- Use the source’s own synchronization control if available. Some video players provide an audio-delay adjustment; its name and range depend on the app and operating system.
- Check a second video source. If only one app is delayed, the app’s buffering or synchronization is the likely variable rather than the speaker.
Do not use Stereo Pair as a guaranteed lip-sync cure. Stereo Pair forces SBC, which removes LDAC’s highest-data-rate mode, but wireless transmission and the playback device can still introduce delay.
How does Stereo Pair change Bluetooth troubleshooting?
Stereo Pair links two compatible ULT Tower 5 speakers, but it adds setup requirements and changes the codec behavior. Treat it as a separate configuration rather than troubleshooting a single speaker connection.

Requirements before setup
- Install current software on both speakers.
- Place the two speakers within 1 m (3.2 ft) of each other during setup.
- Keep the playback device within about 30 m (98.4 ft) line of sight under Sony’s stated Stereo Pair conditions.
- Expect paired playback to use SBC, even if the source normally uses LDAC.
Reliable Stereo Pair order
- Charge and power on both speakers.
- Update both units to the current software shown for them in Sound Connect.
- Place the speakers within 1 m of one another and complete the Stereo Pair setup in the app.
- Pair the playback device with the resulting speaker system, not with a separate speaker entry left over from an earlier setup.
- After the pair works, move the speakers to their listening positions while keeping the playback device’s path as clear as possible.
If Stereo Pair is unstable, first bring both units back within 1 m and test again. A setup that works only when the speakers are close points to the pair link or interference; a setup that works nearby but fails at the listening position points to distance or obstructions.
What common troubleshooting mistakes make the problem worse?
- Reading the indicator backward: double-flashing means pairing mode; steady blue means an established connection.
- Testing with a nearly empty battery: automatic shutdown can interrupt a pairing attempt and mimic a Bluetooth fault.
- Leaving several remembered devices active: another phone or computer may reconnect before the intended source.
- Using LDAC while diagnosing video delay: Sony identifies LDAC video playback as a situation where delay may occur.
- Ignoring the connection-quality control: continuing to test in a congested environment without selecting Prioritize Stable Connection makes it difficult to tell whether the setting helps.
- Applying a reset sequence from another model: the reviewed Sony documentation does not provide a ULT Tower 5-specific factory-reset sequence.
When should I stop troubleshooting and contact Sony support?
Contact Sony support after the speaker is charged, the indicator behaves as expected, competing devices are disabled, the source has been re-paired, and a clear radio path plus Prioritize Stable Connection still produce repeated failures. Record whether the fault is pairing, dropouts, or delay; note whether it affects one source or several; and state whether Stereo Pair is involved. That information distinguishes a source-device or interference problem from a speaker-side fault without repeating every test.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a software update guarantee that Bluetooth dropouts will disappear?
No. Current software on both speakers is a requirement for Stereo Pair, but Sony does not promise that an update eliminates interference-related interruptions. Keep the physical radio path and connection-quality setting in the test as well.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWill switching away from LDAC make music unusable?
No. SBC and AAC remain supported A2DP codecs. Moving away from LDAC may reduce the maximum data rate, but it can be a sensible trade when stability or video timing matters more than maximum codec throughput.
What if the speaker shows connected but no sound comes from it?
Select ULT TOWER 5 as the active playback output in the source’s audio controls; a Bluetooth connection does not always change the app’s output automatically. Also check media volume and pause another app that may have captured audio.
Is there an official ULT Tower 5 factory-reset button sequence?
The current Sony help material used for these fixes does not publish a model-specific reset sequence. Avoid instructions for unrelated speakers and use Sony support if re-pairing and interference checks fail.
