If an Xbox game will not download after purchase, first identify whether the failure is on an Xbox console or a Windows PC, then check Xbox service status before changing local settings. On Windows, sign in to the Microsoft account that paid for the game, reopen the Xbox app or Microsoft Store, install Windows and Store updates, and use repair or reset before reinstalling. On either platform, an outage, account or region mismatch, device incompatibility, insufficient storage, network filtering, or Gaming Services can block installation even though the transaction completed.
Use the decision tree below for the symptom you see. Do not buy the game again while entitlement or Xbox service status is still in doubt.
Is the problem on an Xbox console or a Windows PC?
The first split matters because Microsoft publishes separate troubleshooting flows. Console owners should use Xbox’s game-installation and slow-download guidance; Windows users should work through Microsoft Store, Xbox app, Windows Update, storage, and Gaming Services checks. Do not run Windows commands such as wsreset.exe on a console, and do not assume a Windows Store repair will change a console queue.

Could an Xbox service outage be stopping the download?
Yes. Xbox Live service problems can prevent a purchase from being delivered to the console, Xbox app, or Microsoft Store correctly. Open the official Xbox Live Status page before making destructive changes. The status page is a live JavaScript application, so its result changes over time; this guide does not assert that Xbox is currently operational or experiencing an outage.

If an incident is listed, wait for Microsoft to restore the affected service. Avoid repeated purchases, repeated cache resets, or uninstalling the game while the account and commerce systems are impaired. After the incident is cleared, restart the console or the Windows app and check the library again. A service incident cannot be repaired by changing the installation drive or buying external storage.
Why does Microsoft Store say I own the game but show no Install button?
This symptom usually means the local account, availability rules, or device state does not match the completed purchase. On Windows, sign out and back in with the Microsoft account that completed the transaction, then check the game’s listing in both Microsoft Store and the Xbox app if both are involved.
Verify the purchasing account
Microsoft’s support sequence begins, “First, sign in to your Microsoft account. Next, work through these possible solutions in the order presented.” Make sure the Store and Xbox app are using the same account that appears in the purchase history. A different personal, work, school, or family account can show the product page without granting that account an installation license.
Check availability rules
Microsoft identifies country or region, family settings, product availability, device compatibility, a required restart after updates, and device authorization as reasons an app or game may be missing or unavailable to install. Confirm that the game is sold in the account’s current region, that family controls permit it, and that the PC or console meets the product’s supported-device requirements. If Windows recently installed an update, restart before deciding that the license is missing.
Check device authorization
A purchase can be valid while the current device is not authorized for that installation. Remove stale account sessions only through Microsoft’s account and device-management controls; do not delete the purchase or create a second account. If the title appears on another authorized device but not this one, tell support which account and device show the mismatch.

What is the least disruptive Windows fix order?
Follow these steps in order. Each step changes more local state than the one before it, so stop when the download starts.
- Close and reopen the affected app. Exit the Xbox app and Microsoft Store, wait briefly, and open the app again. If a download is stuck in a queue, check whether it resumes without canceling the item.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart. Open Windows Settings, go to Windows Update, apply available updates, and restart even if Windows does not force an immediate reboot. Microsoft lists a required restart after updates as one reason a product can remain unavailable.
- Update Microsoft Store. Open Microsoft Store, select Library, and choose Get updates. Allow Store and its dependencies to finish updating, then reopen the Xbox app and try the installation again.
- Run the relevant installation troubleshooter. Use Microsoft’s current Xbox or Windows game-installation troubleshooting flow for the platform and symptom you have. A console installation issue and a Windows Xbox-app issue should not be mixed into one procedure.
- Repair the affected app. In Windows Settings, open Apps, locate the Xbox app or Microsoft Store, open its Advanced options, and choose Repair. Repair is intended to correct the app without removing its stored data.
- Reset only if repair fails. In the same Advanced options screen, choose Reset and confirm. Reset can clear local app state, so you may need to sign in again and reselect the installation location.
- Reinstall last. Remove and reinstall the affected app only after account, updates, Store state, repair, and reset have failed. Reinstalling the game itself is also a late step; it cannot correct an outage, missing entitlement, blocked Store endpoint, or incompatible device.
This order preserves the least disruptive options first. If another Microsoft Store app downloads normally while this title does not, return to the account, availability, and device-authorization checks rather than repeating app resets.

Use the Store reset when Microsoft Store will not open, shows stale ownership information, or fails to begin a download. It clears the Store cache and launch state; it is not a universal fix for Xbox service outages, account licensing, storage, or Gaming Services.
- Press the Windows key plus R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - Wait while the command runs. Microsoft says a blank Command Prompt window opens and, after about ten seconds, closes automatically; Microsoft Store then opens.
- When Store opens, sign in with the purchasing account, go to Library, select Get updates, and retry the game installation.
If Store still fails, install pending Windows updates and verify that Windows time, date, and location settings are correct. An incorrect clock or region can make a valid purchase appear unavailable. Do not promise that wsreset.exe will fix every download problem: it addresses Store cache and launch state only.
How do storage and the installation drive stop a Windows Xbox game?
Low free space can stop a download or cause an installation to halt after it has started. Windows can also have space available on one disk while the Xbox app is configured to install new apps on another disk with insufficient capacity or an unavailable path.

- Open Settings > System > Storage and review free space on the drive selected for apps and games.
- Open Settings > System > Storage > Change where new content is saved.
- Check the drive shown for new apps. If it is disconnected, full, or not the drive you intend to use, select a configured drive with enough capacity.
- Return to the Xbox app, choose the destination when prompted, and start the installation again.
An external USB SSD is a sensible option when capacity or a configured destination drive is the actual blocker for Windows game installs or Xbox-app library storage. It does not fix an account mismatch, licensing problem, Xbox outage, Store registration failure, firewall or proxy restriction, or Gaming Services error. Console compatibility with external storage varies by Xbox generation and game; do not assume that every Xbox console title can run from every USB drive.

Yes. Microsoft Store and the Xbox app need access to Microsoft endpoints for licensing, metadata, downloads, and updates. A work or school PC, security appliance, proxy, DNS filter, or restrictive firewall can allow ordinary web browsing while blocking one of those endpoints.
For persistent Store download failures, Microsoft Learn recommends checking whether Store is registered for the user, whether Store is allowed to download updates, whether required packages can be installed, and whether firewall or proxy rules block required endpoints. This branch is especially relevant when several Store downloads fail, the problem appears only on a managed network, or the download works on a different connection.
Network checks that do not destroy local data
- Temporarily test the same account and device on a permitted network, such as a home connection, if your organization’s policy allows it.
- Ask the network administrator whether Microsoft Store and Xbox services are being filtered or intercepted.
- Review Windows proxy settings and security software logs rather than disabling protection permanently.
- Check whether Store updates are permitted for the user and whether required app packages can install.
A wired Ethernet cable can help only when the evidence points to an unstable or congested local connection. It will not resolve an outage, missing ownership, region restriction, incompatible hardware, or a Gaming Services failure.
What should I do about Gaming Services error codes?
Treat Gaming Services errors as a separate, version-specific Windows branch. Microsoft’s Windows 10 support documentation describes errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F when installing or starting Gaming Services.

For those documented errors, Microsoft identifies Windows update KB5004476 as the resolution and provides a Gaming Services removal-and-reinstall workaround. Follow the instructions for the exact Windows 10 error and edition you have, including any required restart. Do not apply that 2021-era path as a universal remedy for every Xbox app problem or to a different error code without matching Microsoft’s current documentation.
If Gaming Services is missing, repeatedly stops, or returns another code, record the complete code and version of Windows before changing components. A generic game reinstall will not repair a Gaming Services registration problem.
How do I fix an Xbox console download that is stuck or stopped?
Console troubleshooting uses Xbox’s own installation and download-speed flows rather than Windows Store commands. Start with service status, then use the console-specific guidance for the symptom shown on screen.
- Check Xbox Live Status and note any incident affecting purchases, downloads, or gaming services.
- Confirm that the console is signed in to the account that completed the purchase and that the game appears in that account’s library.
- Restart the console using its normal power and restart controls, then check the queue again.
- Use Xbox’s official game-installation troubleshooting flow for an install that will not start or has stopped.
- If the download is progressing but unusually slowly, use Xbox’s separate slow-game-or-app-download flow instead of repeatedly canceling the queue.
- Check available console storage and remove or move content only when storage is identified as the constraint.
Do not apply wsreset.exe, Windows app repair, or Windows drive settings to a console. If the console shows ownership but no install option after service recovery and an account check, escalate with the exact title, account, console model, and message shown.
