If an Ocarina of Time boss glitch leaves Link unable to move, prevents a cutscene from finishing, or removes a required weapon, the encounter is usually softlocked. There is no in-game repair: reset the game, reload the newest save, and replay the fight without repeating the trigger.
This guide covers the documented Bongo Bongo bomb softlock, the Ganon Master Sword disappearance, what to do on Nintendo 64, Nintendo Switch Online, and Ocarina of Time 3D, and why a newly reported bottled-item technique is not a recovery method.
First, decide whether the fight is difficult or actually softlocked
Do not keep experimenting in the room if the game is in one of these states:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Link is frozen during a boss entrance or defeat cutscene.
- The boss’s normal attack pattern never starts or never advances.
- A required weapon, such as the Master Sword, has disappeared.
- Controls, damage, or room transitions no longer behave normally after a glitch trigger.
Those symptoms indicate a bad encounter state, not a strategy problem. Waiting, changing equipment, or taking more damage will not restore the missing event. Save-state and emulator features can add their own complications, but the documented game glitches themselves require leaving the encounter and loading a valid save.

The immediate recovery procedure
- Stop the glitched attempt. Do not activate more items or deliberately damage Link while a cutscene is stuck. Additional inputs cannot complete an interrupted event.
- Reset the game. Use the reset command for the hardware or software release you are playing. The Bongo Bongo warning from Zelda Wiki specifically says a reset is required; the Ganon warning says the sword cannot be restored in that encounter.
- Reload the latest usable save. Choose the most recent save made before entering the failed boss state. If you made a save after the glitch, use an earlier one instead.
- Re-enter the room using the intended sequence. Do not repeat the bomb interruption, spell activation, or other action that caused the failure.
- Verify the release before following a glitch guide. Original Nintendo 64 behavior, the Nintendo Switch Online version, and Ocarina of Time 3D are separate targets; instructions for one are not automatically valid for another.
If the newest save is already inside the broken encounter, select an earlier save or backup. A reset only clears the current runtime state; it does not rewrite a save that was made after the glitch.
Bongo Bongo: fixing the bomb entrance-cutscene softlock
What causes the failure
The documented setup has Link take out a bomb before reaching the bottom of the Shadow Temple hole. If the bomb explodes at the wrong point, it damages Bongo Bongo and starts the attack pattern while the appearance cutscene is still supposed to play. Link remains trapped in that cutscene and cannot move. A GameFAQs answer describes the same failure when a bomb is shield-dropped before landing: the boss is damaged immediately, the entrance sequence is interrupted, and the room becomes a softlock.
How to recover
- Reset the game as soon as Link is stuck or the entrance sequence fails.
- Reload the latest save from before the drop into the boss room.
- Return to Bongo Bongo without holding, dropping, or shield-dropping a bomb before the entrance cutscene has completed.
There is no menu command that restarts only the Bongo Bongo encounter. If the current save was made after the interruption, load an earlier save.

Use the ordinary encounter rather than the bomb setup:

- Lens of Truth: Use it to reveal Bongo Bongo’s body, which is otherwise difficult to target.
These are the normal tactics summarized in the GameFAQs answer. They do not repair a glitched room; they are the safe sequence for the fresh attempt after resetting.
Ganon: recovering when the Master Sword disappears
How the sword-disappearance glitch happens
The documented failure occurs after Ganon knocks the Master Sword away. If Link equips Din’s Fire, Farore’s Wind, or Nayru’s Love and activates the spell while touching the sword, the spell animation can play while the sword’s pickup animation does not. The Master Sword then disappears.
Why the fight cannot continue
The final encounter requires the Master Sword to defeat Ganon. Once the sword has vanished in this state, the weapon cannot be restored during that attempt. Zelda Wiki’s glitch guide therefore treats the encounter as unwinnable and instructs the player to reset and fight again.

- Reset immediately if the sword vanishes or its pickup event fails.
- Reload the newest save from before the Ganon sequence.
- On the retry, do not activate Din’s Fire, Farore’s Wind, or Nayru’s Love while Link is touching the dropped sword.
- Allow the sword pickup to complete before using any spell that you intend to use in the phase.
The important distinction is timing: the documented failure is an overlap between spell activation and the sword interaction, not a general problem with those three spells.

Release and platform differences
Original Nintendo 64 release
The Bongo Bongo and Ganon setups described above are documented against the original Nintendo 64 game. Timing, collision, cutscene handling, and item behavior in that release are the reference point for the guides.
Nintendo Switch Online
Community reports say the newer bottled-item technique described below works on the Nintendo Switch Online version and on an original cartridge. That is a report from the speedrunning community, not a universal compatibility guarantee. A guide written for the Nintendo 64 release may still require different timing on Switch Online, and a failed attempt should be treated as a softlock if the symptoms match the cases above.
Ocarina of Time 3D
Ocarina of Time 3D is a separate release, not a visual-only port of the Nintendo 64 game. It includes instructional videos and a modified Water Temple, among other changes. Original-release glitch instructions therefore may not reproduce identically, and a result in 3D should not be used as proof that the Nintendo 64 or Switch Online setup behaves the same way.

The 2026 bottled-item technique is not a repair
GamesRadar reported on October 13, 2026 that speedrunner ZFG described a new technique in which a bottled item creates a lingering hitbox that overwrites damage values. The report quotes two major uses: beating Volvagia without the hammer and Ganondorf without light arrows.
This technique is an optional speedrunning exploit, not a way to recover a boss room that is already frozen or missing an item. ZFG also warned that many minor details affect the setup, so it is not simply an automatic time-saver for every run. Do not substitute it for the reset-and-reload procedure when an encounter has softlocked.
How to choose the correct next step
| What you see | Classification | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Link can move, the boss reacts, and attacks follow the normal pattern | Ordinary difficulty | Use the intended mechanics for that boss |
| Link is frozen during an entrance or defeat cutscene | Softlock | Reset and reload the latest pre-glitch save |
| A required weapon disappears or its pickup event never completes | Unwinnable encounter state | Reset; the missing event cannot be repaired in the room |
| The guide targets a different release from yours | Unverified compatibility | Do not assume identical behavior; use release-specific instructions |
| You are considering the bottled-item hitbox method | Optional speedrun exploit | Use only for a planned run, not as recovery for a failed encounter |
Preventing another failed attempt
- Make a normal in-game save before starting a boss setup that relies on unusual item timing.
- Keep a separate backup or save slot when the release allows it.
- Read the entire setup, including warnings about cutscene timing, before entering the room.
- Do not test a bomb, spell, or bottled item while Link is crossing a trigger point unless the guide specifically requires that timing for your release.
- If a cutscene begins but does not finish, stop pressing buttons and reset rather than trying additional item combinations.
- After loading, confirm that the save is from before the trigger; a save made inside the broken state will reproduce the problem.
Common questions about a failed boss glitch
Can I fix Bongo Bongo without resetting?
No. The documented bomb interruption leaves Link stuck in the entrance cutscene. Resetting and loading a pre-glitch save is the required recovery.
Can another weapon replace the missing Master Sword against Ganon?
Not in the documented disappearance state. The guide states that Ganon cannot be defeated without the Master Sword in that encounter, so reset and replay the sequence.

Will the same glitch happen on Ocarina of Time 3D?
It is not safe to assume that. Ocarina of Time 3D is a separate release with gameplay and presentation changes, and the documented instructions primarily target the original game.
Does the bottled-item method make every boss easier?
No. The October 13, 2026 report describes specific uses and notes that many details make the technique unsuitable as an automatic shortcut. It also does not repair a softlocked encounter.
What if my latest save is after the glitch?
Load an earlier save or backup. Resetting clears the running encounter but cannot undo a save that permanently records the bad state.
