An eSIM that will not activate usually needs a reliable Wi‑Fi connection, an active eSIM-enabled plan, current phone software, and an unlocked, compatible device. Start by turning Airplane Mode on and off, restarting the phone, checking that the mobile line is enabled, and retrying the carrier’s setup method. If that fails, the cause is often carrier provisioning, a billing or account restriction, an incorrect EID or IMEI, an outage, a location rule, a carrier lock, or an incompatible model rather than a damaged phone.
Use the sequence below to isolate the failure. It covers iPhone and Android checks, QR-code alternatives, dual-SIM complications, the information support will need, and when replacing the phone is justified.
What does an eSIM need before it can activate?
Activation normally succeeds only when all of the following conditions are true. Check them before repeatedly scanning a QR code, because a missing prerequisite can make every activation method fail.

|---|---|---|
| Internet connection | Connect to dependable Wi‑Fi or a personal hotspot during setup. | The phone must contact the carrier’s activation server; cellular service is not available yet. |
| Active account | Confirm the plan is paid, not suspended, and assigned to the correct phone number. | A billing block or inactive line prevents the carrier from provisioning the eSIM. |
| eSIM support | Check support for the exact phone model, hardware variant, and country or region. | Two phones with the same product family name can have different eSIM capabilities. |
| Unlocked device | Verify that the phone accepts another carrier’s service. | A carrier-locked phone can reject an otherwise valid eSIM. |
| Current software | Install available operating-system, carrier-settings, and carrier-app updates. | Activation workflows and modem profiles can depend on current software. |
| Correct identifiers | Have the device’s IMEI and EID available and ensure the carrier has the right ones. | A mismatched EID or IMEI can attach the plan to the wrong hardware. |
A phone purchased in another country may have different radio bands, regional restrictions, or no eSIM hardware at all. Confirm eligibility with the carrier for the precise model and location rather than relying only on the phone’s marketing name.

Why won’t my eSIM activate or connect to cellular service?
The failure generally falls into one of five groups: device compatibility, lock status, account provisioning, network conditions, or an exhausted activation credential.
Unsupported or locked phone
The model may not include an eSIM, may not support the carrier in that region, or may be locked to another network. An unlocked phone is not automatically compatible with every carrier’s eSIM implementation.
Inactive, restricted, or incorrectly provisioned line
Unpaid service, number-lock features, an account security hold, or a line provisioned against a different EID or IMEI can block setup. The carrier may need to remove a restriction or re-provision the line.
Outage, weak coverage, or location rule
An activation server or local network outage can leave an installed eSIM showing no service. Some providers also require initial activation in a particular country; Tello, for example, states that initial setup must occur physically in the United States.
Invalid or already-used QR code
Many QR codes are single-use. If a previous attempt consumed the code, scanning it again may produce an error even though the plan itself is valid. A replacement code or another activation method is then required.
Software or temporary radio state
Airplane Mode, a stale carrier profile, or an incomplete software update can leave the modem disconnected. Basic resets often restore service without changing the plan.

How do I fix an eSIM that will not activate? Follow this order
Work through these steps in order. Test for cellular service after each step so you know which change solved the problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Connect to reliable Wi‑Fi or a hotspot. Keep the phone online throughout activation. Avoid captive-portal networks, such as hotel Wi‑Fi that requires a browser sign-in, until setup is complete.
- Confirm the plan and device. Check that the line is active and paid, the carrier supports eSIM for the exact model and region, and the phone is unlocked. If the phone was bought used or abroad, ask the carrier to verify its eligibility.
- Turn Airplane Mode on and off. Enable it, wait about 15 seconds, then disable it. This restarts the phone’s radio registration without deleting the eSIM.
- Restart the phone. A full reboot reloads the cellular modem and can complete a pending carrier-profile installation.
- Check that the line is enabled. Open the phone’s cellular or mobile-network settings, select the target line, and turn it on. If the number is listed, switch the line off, wait a few seconds, and switch it on again.
- Install updates. Apply the latest operating-system update. Also accept any carrier-settings update and update the carrier’s activation app when applicable.
- Retry the carrier’s preferred method. Use its notification, activation link, app, QR code, or manual SM-DP+ entry. Do not keep rescanning a code that may already have been consumed.
- Check for an outage or coverage problem. Look at the carrier’s status information or ask support whether activation systems and service in your area are operating normally.
- Escalate with identifiers. Give support the exact error, phone number, account credentials requested by the carrier, IMEI, and EID. Ask for eligibility, unlock, provisioning, and replacement-code checks.
What should I check on an iPhone?
On iPhone, begin with the line and carrier-settings checks before deleting anything. Removing a working eSIM can make recovery harder if you do not have a replacement activation method.
Verify the line and install carrier settings
- Open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Service in some regions) and confirm that the target number appears.
- Tap the line and turn on Turn On This Line. If it is already on, turn it off, wait briefly, and turn it on again.
- Open Settings > General > About. Stay on that screen for a moment; install a carrier-settings update if iOS offers one.
- Retry the carrier notification, activation link, carrier app, QR code, or manual-entry instructions.
Apple’s guidance is direct: “If you still can’t set up your eSIM on your iPhone, contact your carrier.” Support can determine whether the line is provisioned to the correct EID and whether a new QR code is needed.
Check iPhone lock and Dual SIM conditions
For two lines, the iPhone must be unlocked unless both plans are from the same carrier. Both plans must be active, and the carrier must support Dual SIM on that model. Confirm that each line has coverage and that neither account is billing-blocked.
What should I check on an Android phone?
Android menus differ by manufacturer and software version, but the underlying checks are the same: Wi‑Fi, unlock status, current software, an enabled line, and a valid carrier profile.

- Restart the phone, then retry the carrier’s app, link, QR code, or manual activation flow.
- Confirm with the carrier that the device is unlocked and that its exact model and region are eligible.
Google Fi documents additional failure branches. Number Lock may need to be disabled, an unusable eSIM may need replacement, and some cases require a physical SIM or a different device. Follow the carrier’s specific error instructions rather than deleting the profile repeatedly.

What if the QR code will not add the cellular plan?
A QR code is only one activation route, and a failed scan does not prove that the phone or plan is defective.
Request a fresh code
Ask the carrier to issue a replacement QR code. Tell support whether the code was scanned previously, because a consumed code generally cannot be reused.
Use a link or carrier app
Some carriers send an activation notification or link that installs the profile without camera scanning. Their official app may authenticate the account and download the eSIM directly.
Enter SM-DP+ details manually
If the carrier supplies an SM-DP+ address and activation code, choose the phone’s manual eSIM-entry option and type the values exactly as provided. Punctuation, capitalization, and leading characters can matter; copy and paste when the carrier allows it.
Do not delete a partially working profile casually
If the eSIM appears in settings but has no service, leave it installed while support checks provisioning. Deleting it without a replacement code can remove your only activation credential.
How do account, network, and location problems affect activation?
When the profile installs but the phone cannot register, inspect the service account and local network rather than repeating device resets.

- Billing block: settle an overdue balance or ask the carrier to remove a suspension.
- Wrong EID or IMEI: compare the identifiers shown in the phone’s About screen with those on the carrier account.
- Number Lock or security restriction: follow the carrier’s identity-verification process and ask whether the feature must be disabled temporarily.
- Outage: wait for the carrier to restore activation or radio service; changing settings cannot repair a carrier-side outage.
- Coverage: move outdoors or to a known coverage area after activation. An installed profile can still show no service where the carrier has no signal.
- Location rule: complete initial setup in the country or territory required by the carrier. A VPN does not change the phone’s physical location.
- Account ownership or transfer: ensure the number has finished porting and that the account holder has authorized the new device.
How do I troubleshoot an eSIM on a Dual-SIM phone?
Dual-SIM behavior adds eligibility rules and configuration choices. On an iPhone, the device must be unlocked unless both plans use the same carrier, and the carrier must support Dual SIM for that model.
- Confirm that both plans are active and have completed provisioning.
- Temporarily disable the other line and test the target eSIM alone.
- Choose which line handles cellular data, calls, and messages in the cellular settings.
- Check coverage, outage status, and billing for each account.
- Re-enable the second line after the target line registers successfully.
If service works with one line disabled but fails when both are on, the issue is likely a carrier or model-specific Dual-SIM limitation rather than a bad QR code.
What information should I give the carrier?
Prepare the details below before contacting support. Complete information lets the carrier distinguish a device problem from a provisioning or account problem.
- The exact on-screen error text and the time it appeared.
- Your phone number and account PIN or password, using the carrier’s secure support channel.
- The phone make, exact model, operating-system version, and country where activation is being attempted.
- The IMEI and EID, found in the phone’s About settings or on its packaging.
- Whether the eSIM profile is visible in settings, whether the line is enabled, and whether any signal bars or carrier name appear.
- Whether the QR code has been scanned before and whether you tried a notification, link, app, or manual method.
Ask the representative to verify eSIM eligibility for the exact model and region, unlock status, line provisioning, account restrictions, outage status, and whether a new QR code or manual activation code is required.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should I replace the phone?
Replace the device only after the carrier confirms that the plan and provisioning are correct. A replacement is reasonable when the current phone is carrier-locked and cannot be unlocked, lacks eSIM support, is a regional variant the carrier cannot serve, or has a suspected eSIM hardware failure.
Recommended Free Tools
If you buy an unlocked eSIM-compatible smartphone, check the exact model number, supported radio bands, regional eSIM availability, and carrier-unlock status before purchase. In some documented cases, using a physical SIM or switching to another device is the practical workaround; that decision should follow the carrier’s diagnosis, not precede it.

How should I compare another carrier or device?
Compare the details that determine whether activation will work, not just advertised data speeds or phone compatibility.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Exact compatibility | Does the carrier support this model number and country variant? |
| Unlock policy | Is the phone unlocked now, and what conditions apply before an unlock? |
| Activation method | Are notification, link, app, QR, and manual SM-DP+ options available? |
| Setup conditions | Is Wi‑Fi required, and must first activation occur in a particular location? |
| Dual-SIM support | Can both lines remain active, and which combinations of physical SIM and eSIM are supported? |
| Account controls | Could billing blocks, Number Lock, identity checks, or porting delays prevent setup? |
| Support and replacement | How quickly can the carrier re-provision a line or issue a replacement QR code? |
| Coverage and outages | Does the carrier cover the places you use the phone, and where can outages be checked? |
How can I avoid another eSIM activation failure?
- Check the exact model and regional eSIM support before buying or transferring a phone.
- Keep the phone connected to dependable Wi‑Fi during setup and updates.
- Save the carrier’s support details and account credentials securely before starting a transfer.
- Do not erase a functioning or partially installed eSIM until the carrier confirms that a replacement is ready.
- Record the IMEI and EID so support can correct provisioning quickly.
- Complete activation in the required country and verify that the line can make a call, send a text, and use mobile data before leaving Wi‑Fi.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an eSIM activate without Wi‑Fi?
Usually not. Most phones need Wi‑Fi or a hotspot to download the carrier profile, although a carrier may support a different workflow in limited cases. Connect to Wi‑Fi before retrying and keep the connection active until setup finishes.
How long should I wait after installing an eSIM before contacting support?
Allow a few minutes after installation, then toggle Airplane Mode and restart once. If the line still has no service after confirming coverage and account status, contact the carrier rather than repeatedly deleting and reinstalling the profile.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWill resetting network settings erase my eSIM?
A network-settings reset normally removes saved Wi‑Fi, VPN, and cellular preferences, but menu behavior varies by phone. Read the confirmation screen carefully and keep a replacement activation method available before using any reset that says it will erase cellular plans.
Why does my eSIM show signal bars but mobile data does not work?
The line may be registered for voice but have incorrect data-line selection or an incomplete data provision. Select the eSIM as the mobile-data line, check the carrier’s APN instructions if it provides them, and ask support to verify data provisioning.
