If that does not help, test in Safe Mode and check whether the failure happens in the same part of the screen. These steps can help distinguish a temporary or app-related problem from one that needs manufacturer support; menus and button procedures vary by phone model.
1. Check the screen, case, and surroundings
Before changing settings, rule out things that can block touch input. Remove the case and screen protector temporarily, take off gloves, remove stickers covering the display or sensors, and clean the screen. Look for cracks or other visible damage.
On Pixel phones, Google notes that a screen protector may need replacement after removal. Treat removal as a diagnostic check, not a recommendation to buy a new protector.
2. Restart the phone
A restart can clear a temporary software problem. Google Android Help says that on most phones, you can restart by holding the power button for about 30 seconds. Button behavior and restart combinations can differ by model. If this does not work, use the manufacturer’s instructions for your phone rather than trying an unverified button sequence.

3. Test whether a downloaded app is involved
Start the phone in Safe Mode using the instructions for its manufacturer and model; the entry steps are not universal. Safe Mode disables downloaded apps temporarily, which helps determine whether one may be interfering with touch.
Google Android Help says, “If the screen works in safe mode, an app is most likely causing your issue.” That points toward an app but does not identify which one.

- Enter Safe Mode using your phone maker’s instructions.
- Test whether the screen responds normally.
- If touch works in Safe Mode, leave Safe Mode and uninstall recently downloaded apps one at a time. Test the screen after each removal.
- If touch still fails in Safe Mode, continue with the screen-area check below. This result alone does not establish a specific cause.
4. Check whether touch fails in one area
Google’s Android guidance describes a drag test for identifying a repeated screen-area problem:
- Place a finger at the top-left corner of the screen.
- Drag slowly in one continuous motion to the bottom-right corner without lifting your finger.
- If the notification shade or Quick Settings shade opens and interrupts the drag, repeat the test.
If the drag releases again at the same point, note where it happens and contact the phone manufacturer. A repeated failure in one location is a reason to seek support, not a definitive diagnosis of a particular hardware fault.

5. Check model-specific touch settings and diagnostics
Some manufacturers provide touch diagnostics or sensitivity controls, but these are not universal Android settings.
Google Pixel
Google’s Pixel instructions cover diagnostics and adaptive-touch settings on newer Pixel models, and a screen-protector sensitivity setting on earlier models. The available controls depend on the model. Follow Google’s Pixel touch and response instructions rather than assuming the same menu exists on every Android phone.

Samsung provides Galaxy-specific touchscreen troubleshooting and describes diagnostics through the Samsung Members app when it is installed. Follow Samsung’s touchscreen troubleshooting instructions for the relevant device and available app features.

A factory data reset removes data from the phone. Google advises backing up first: data saved to your Google Account may be restorable, but apps and their associated data are uninstalled. Do not reset simply because touch is unreliable unless you understand the data-loss risk and have secured what you need.

If touch is completely unavailable, Google says the phone’s buttons may be used to trigger a reset. The exact procedure depends on the model, so get the correct instructions from the manufacturer before proceeding. A reset is a software troubleshooting step; it will not repair a damaged display or digitizer.
7. When to contact the manufacturer or carrier
Contact the phone manufacturer or carrier if the problem persists after the checks above, repeatedly occurs at the same screen location, or follows visible damage. Describe what you tested, whether touch worked in Safe Mode, and where the drag test released. That information can help support determine the next appropriate step.
