An AI washing machine that overdoses or underdoses detergent usually has a setup problem rather than a failed “AI” feature. The cause is most often the wrong dosing path, an incompatible product, an incorrect concentration or water-hardness setting, or residue blocking the dispenser. Select the correct AutoDose or manual mode, match the tank to a compatible liquid detergent, recalibrate the dose, and clean the tank, drawer and delivery lines. If the pump, sensor or water inlet still misbehaves after those checks, stop changing settings and arrange model-specific service.

What counts as an AI washing machine, and why does dosing vary?

“AI washing machine” is a consumer label, not a single technical standard. It can describe a washer that weighs the load, chooses or adjusts a cycle, connects to an app, or automatically meters detergent and softener. The dosing behavior therefore depends on the model, the selected cycle and the dispenser design.

For example, LG’s ezDispense system senses laundry weight and dispenses liquid detergent and softener. Samsung exposes separate dose-per-wash and concentration controls. AEG and Electrolux describe preset dosing that must be matched to detergent type and local water hardness. Those systems cannot be diagnosed with one universal dose number; use the instructions for the exact model.

Before troubleshooting, note the washer’s model number, the product in each tank, the selected cycle and whether the load was lightly or heavily soiled. Those details determine which settings and products are valid.

Why is my washer using too much or too little detergent?

Most dosing errors fall into a small number of categories. The symptom often points to the category, but a tank that is full does not prove that its pump is delivering the intended amount.

Observed symptom Likely causes First check
Suds, detergent smell, stiff fabric or poor rinsing Dose too high, concentration set too low for a very concentrated product, or residue in the delivery path Verify product concentration and dose settings, then inspect and clean the dispenser
Clothes remain grey, stiff or dirty over time Dose too low, basic dosage below the detergent maker’s recommendation, incorrect water-hardness setting or an empty delivery line Confirm the base dose, water hardness, soil level and that detergent is actually leaving the tank
Detergent remains in the drawer Low water flow, hardened powder, excessive quantity or buildup Remove the drawer and check the water jets and compartments for blockage
No suds after a refill Detergent and softener may be in the wrong tanks, or the pump may not be primed Check tank labels and the product path before adding more detergent
Both a tank and the manual compartment empty during one cycle AutoDose was left on while detergent was also placed in the manual drawer Identify which dosing path the selected cycle uses and disable the unused path

Miele’s support guidance explains the two most important consequences: “Too much detergent causes excess foam which prevents the laundry from moving freely in the drum, resulting in poor wash results, cleaning results and spin performance.” It also warns that too little detergent can leave laundry unclean and, over time, grey and stiff because of limescale.

How do I diagnose the dosing problem safely?

Work through the following sequence before changing several settings at once. It separates a product or configuration mistake from a mechanical fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the dosing path. Check the cycle screen and manual to determine whether the load uses AutoDose, a manual drawer compartment or a pod placed in the drum. AEG warns that leaving AutoDose on while filling the manual compartment can dispense from both locations and cause an overdose.
  2. Read the product and washer instructions together. Confirm whether the tank accepts the detergent you have. LG cautions that its ezDispense tanks are not for powder, ultra-concentrated or gel-type products, or clumped material. AEG and Electrolux also state that powder and pods should not go in their AutoDose tanks.
  3. Check concentration and dose. A detergent’s label quantity is the starting point. Samsung provides separate dose and concentration controls; a very concentrated liquid may require a lower dose than a standard liquid. AEG notes that preset dosage may need adjustment for water hardness and detergent type.
  4. Match the dose to the load. Verify load size, soil level and water hardness before increasing or decreasing the setting. BSH identifies an incorrect basic dosage as a cause of insufficient cleaning.
  5. Inspect for blockage or congealed product. Hardened detergent, a restricted water inlet or residue can leave product in the drawer or prevent a tank pump from delivering a complete dose.
  6. Clean, refill and test with one compatible product. Drain the tank, clean the tank and lines, remove residue, then refill with a single product approved for that dispenser. Run a normal test load rather than adding a second detergent to compensate.
  7. Escalate if the delivery system still fails. A pump, sensor, water inlet or dispenser that remains inaccurate after cleaning and calibration requires the model-specific service guide or an authorized repair channel. Do not transfer dose values from another brand.

How do I fix a washer that uses too much detergent?

Stop increasing the dose as soon as the washer produces heavy foam, leaves residue or gives poor rinsing. Excess detergent can reduce mechanical movement in the drum, so adding more to “clean better” makes the result worse.

Check for double dosing

Look at the cycle options first. If AutoDose is active, remove detergent from the manual compartment unless the manual explicitly requires both. For a pod or a manually measured load, switch AutoDose off for that cycle. This is a configuration change, not a detergent fault.

Correct the concentration setting

Compare the product’s stated concentration with the washer’s setting. Samsung’s controls distinguish the amount dispensed from the detergent concentration; a concentrated liquid can therefore need a smaller dose. Enter the detergent maker’s recommended quantity as the base value, then make one small adjustment and observe the next complete cycle.

Reduce in measured stages

Miele recommends following the detergent maker’s quantity while considering water hardness and soil level, then reducing the amount in stages when excess foam or residue appears. Change only one variable at a time so that you can tell whether concentration, load size or the dispenser caused the improvement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove buildup that can release a slug of detergent

A partly blocked line may deliver little on one cycle and then release accumulated product on the next. Drain the tank, remove hardened or congealed detergent, clean the drawer and accessible lines, and refill with a compatible liquid. Do not mix a new product into old residue.

How do I fix clothes that are still dirty when the AutoDose tank is full?

A full tank only shows that detergent is stored; it does not confirm that the correct amount reached the drum. Check the delivery path and the wash settings before adding extra detergent.

Verify the basic dosage

Use the detergent label and the washer’s model-specific instructions to set the basic quantity. Include the local water-hardness category and the soil level. Hard water, heavily soiled loads and a dose set below the maker’s recommendation can all produce poor cleaning.

Confirm that the product is suitable

AutoDose tanks commonly require a compatible liquid detergent. Powder, pods and some highly concentrated or gel products can block a tank or fail to meter correctly. If the product is not approved for the tank, drain and clean it before switching to the correct type rather than topping it up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check load and cycle conditions

An overloaded drum prevents water and detergent from circulating through fabric. Compare the load with the cycle’s capacity and select a cycle appropriate to the soil level. A low-temperature or short cycle may also be unsuitable for heavily soiled items, even when dosing is correct.

Increase only after the checks

If the washer is dispensing correctly but cleaning remains poor, make a small dose increase and test a comparable load. BSH recommends treating incorrect basic dosage as a possible cause of insufficient cleaning; it does not establish one cross-brand “correct” number.

Can I use pods or powder in an automatic detergent dispenser?

Usually not in the AutoDose tank. Pods and powder are normally used in the location specified for manual dosing, while the tank is filled only with the liquid product approved by that model.

Product Typical correct location Important qualification
Compatible liquid detergent AutoDose tank or manual liquid compartment Confirm the model’s concentration range and set the dose accordingly
Powder detergent Manual powder compartment, when the cycle and manual allow it Do not put it in an AutoDose tank where the manufacturer prohibits powder; hardened powder can obstruct the system
Single-use pod Inside the drum, following the washer’s instructions Switch AutoDose off unless the manual explicitly supports simultaneous use
Fabric softener Softener tank or manual softener compartment Never swap it with detergent; an accidental swap requires emptying and thoroughly cleaning the dispenser

LG’s ezDispense guidance specifically says not to add powdered, ultra-concentrated or gel-type detergent or fabric softener to its dispenser tanks. AEG and Electrolux likewise say not to put powder or pods in their AutoDose tanks. These are model-specific restrictions, so the washer manual takes precedence over a general rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I clean and reset the detergent dispenser?

Cleaning removes residue; resetting or priming restores the dispenser’s learned or stored settings. Do the physical cleaning first, then use only the reset procedure documented for your model.

  1. Stop the washer and protect the area. Cancel the cycle, disconnect power if the manual requires it, and place a tray or towels under the drawer or tank before draining.
  2. Drain the tank completely. Remove old detergent rather than diluting it with a different product. Dispose of it according to the product label.
  3. Remove the drawer and tank components. Wash removable parts with the method specified by the manual. Clear visible hardened detergent from compartments and channels without forcing sharp objects into pumps or seals.
  4. Inspect water inlets and delivery lines. LG lists low water flow, hardened powder, excess detergent and residue buildup as common reasons detergent remains in the dispenser. Clean only accessible filters or jets identified in the manual.
  5. Rinse and dry as directed. A wet compartment can make powder clump; a contaminated tank can change the concentration of a fresh refill.
  6. Refill with one approved product. Check the tank label, detergent type and concentration setting before filling. Keep detergent and softener in their correct reservoirs.
  7. Prime or calibrate if the model provides that function. Some systems have a pump-test, initial-fill or dose-calibration command in the maintenance menu. Follow the exact button path in the model manual; a generic reset sequence can erase settings without clearing an airlock.
  8. Run a maintenance cycle when recommended. Miele advises checking TwinDos dispensing quantity, cleaning deposits, cleaning the drain filter and running a maintenance wash when deposits or poor performance persist.

If the tank reads full but no detergent reaches the drum after a correct refill and prime, the pump, sensor or line may be faulty. Stop experimenting with higher doses and arrange service.

Which settings should I change, and in what order?

Change the setting that corresponds to the verified cause. The order below prevents a concentration error from being mistaken for a dose error.

What do common symptoms mean?

Use the symptom as a starting point, then confirm the cause with a physical inspection and a controlled test load.

Suds, stiff fabric or poor rinsing

Begin with excessive detergent, an incorrect concentration setting or buildup. Reduce the dose in stages only after confirming that AutoDose is not combined with manual detergent. Persistent foam after cleaning can indicate a pump or sensor problem.

Grey or increasingly stiff laundry

Too little detergent can leave soil behind, and Miele notes that long-term underdosing may allow limescale-related greying and stiffness. Check the basic dose, water hardness and soil level before making a modest increase.

Detergent left in the drawer

Inspect water flow, hardened product, the amount dispensed and residue in the compartment. A drawer that repeatedly retains detergent after cleaning may have an inlet or dispenser fault rather than a dose-setting problem.

No suds immediately after refilling

Do not assume the washer needs more detergent. Confirm that detergent was placed in the detergent tank, not the softener tank, and that the selected cycle uses that tank. LG says an accidental swap requires emptying, thoroughly cleaning and refilling the dispenser.

Strong detergent odor after the cycle

Check for overdosing, a concentrated product paired with a standard concentration setting, or detergent trapped in a line. Clean the system and run a correctly configured test load before increasing rinse options or adding another product.

When should I stop adjusting settings and call for service?

Use an authorized or model-specific repair channel when a clean, correctly configured dispenser still fails to deliver a consistent dose. Service is warranted when any of these conditions remains:

  • The tank level changes but no detergent appears in the drum after the model’s prime or pump-test procedure.
  • The pump runs continuously, makes an unusual noise or leaks from the tank, line or drawer.
  • The washer reports a dispenser, dosing, water-inlet or sensor error that returns after a documented reset.
  • Detergent and softener continue to cross-contaminate after the reservoirs have been emptied and cleaned.
  • A cleaned drawer still retains product despite normal water flow and a compatible detergent.

Have the model number, software or control-panel version if displayed, detergent product, water-hardness setting and a description of the test cycle ready for the technician. Do not assume another model’s pump rate or dose values apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I prevent future dosing errors?

  • Keep one compatible liquid detergent in each AutoDose tank; do not mix products during a refill.
  • Record the detergent’s concentration and the washer’s dose setting so a replacement bottle can be configured correctly.
  • Use the manual compartment only when the cycle calls for manual dosing, and switch AutoDose off when using a pod or powder.
  • Check the tank, drawer and accessible lines for residue whenever you change products or notice foam and poor rinsing.
  • Keep the washer’s water-hardness and basic-dose settings aligned with local conditions and the detergent label.
  • Run the maintenance procedure specified by the manufacturer when deposits, odors or declining wash performance appear.
  • Change one variable at a time and compare similar loads; otherwise a new product, cycle and dose change can hide the real cause.

What is the practical fix for most AI washer detergent problems?

Start with the dosing path, not with a larger dose. Confirm that the cycle uses the intended source, replace incompatible powder or pods in an AutoDose tank with an approved liquid, match concentration and water hardness, and clean residue before recalibrating. If a full tank still does not deliver detergent after those steps, the remaining problem is likely in the pump, sensor, inlet or dispenser and needs model-specific service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch detergent brands without emptying the AutoDose tank?

It is safer to drain and clean the tank and delivery path before changing brands or formulas. Residue from the old product can congeal, alter concentration or react with the new product, so refill only after the compartment is clean and the new detergent is approved for that model.

Why does the tank level fall even though my clothes are still dirty?

A falling level proves that liquid is leaving storage, not that the delivered amount is correct or that it reaches the drum at the right time. Check the dose and concentration settings, load size and soil level; if those are correct, inspect for a partial blockage or an inaccurate pump.

Should I dilute a concentrated detergent for AutoDose?

Do not dilute it unless the washer and detergent instructions explicitly require dilution. Use the dispenser’s concentration or dose control for products it supports; adding water can change storage stability and metering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I clean an automatic detergent dispenser?

There is no universal interval because residue depends on product, temperature and use. Inspect it whenever you change detergent or notice buildup, odor, foam or retained product, and follow the maintenance schedule in the washer’s manual.
