Start by identifying the exact 8BitDo model and how it is connected—Bluetooth, its 2.4 GHz USB receiver, or a USB cable. The pairing steps and firmware differ by product, so there is no safe universal reset sequence. Check power and the physical connection first, then isolate the wireless link, computer, and model-specific software.
1. Identify the model and connection mode
Check the label or packaging for the full product name, then note whether you are using Bluetooth, the supplied 2.4 GHz receiver, or a wired USB connection. 8BitDo has separate support pages and manuals for products including the Retro R8 Mouse, Retro Mechanical Keyboard variants, Retro 108 Mechanical Keyboard, and Retro 18 Mechanical Numpad. Find your exact product in the 8BitDo support catalog before trying a pairing combination or firmware update.
A device that works in one mode but not another points toward that connection path or its settings—not necessarily a failed peripheral. If it does not work in any mode, continue through the checks below.
2. Check power, cable, and USB connection
These are general Windows troubleshooting checks, not fixes unique to a particular 8BitDo model. Microsoft recommends checking connections and power before moving on to software troubleshooting.

- For a battery-powered device: confirm that it is charged or try fresh batteries, following the instructions for your model.
- For a 2.4 GHz receiver: unplug the receiver, wait about 10 seconds, and plug it back in. Try a different USB port if it still does not respond.
For additional Windows checks, follow Microsoft’s mouse and keyboard troubleshooting guidance.
3. Troubleshoot Bluetooth pairing
If you are using Bluetooth on Windows, follow Microsoft’s Bluetooth and input-device troubleshooting route, then consult the manual for your exact 8BitDo model for its pairing procedure. Do not assume a key combination or reset method from another 8BitDo product will apply.

Retro R8 Mouse: check the one-device limit
The Retro R8 Mouse can connect to only one Bluetooth device at a time. If you are switching it to another computer or device, the Retro R8 FAQ says you need to pair it again.
Retro 108 Mechanical Keyboard: verify the device name
The Retro 108 manual identifies the Bluetooth listing as “8BitDo Retro 108 Keyboard.” Use that name only when pairing the Retro 108, and check the manual for your device revision for the current procedure: Retro 108 Mechanical Keyboard manual.

4. Check whether the problem follows the device
Test the keyboard or mouse on another computer, using the same connection mode where possible and installing any required software for that host. If it works there, investigate the original computer’s Bluetooth, USB port, receiver connection, or software. If it also fails on another computer, hardware failure becomes more plausible; Microsoft notes that a device that continues to fail may need replacement. This test narrows the possibilities but does not prove a specific fault.

Open the product’s entry in the 8BitDo support catalog and check its manual and current firmware listing. Do not use controller firmware or instructions for a similarly named product. The 8BitDo Firmware Updater offers automatic recognition and online updating, as well as a manual advanced-update option. Its download page lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.13 or later; it also warns that automatic upgrade-mode entry does not cover some old or discontinued models.

- 8BITDO RETRO 87-KEY WIRELESS RGB MECHANICAL GAMING KEYBOARD - XBOX EDITION
Firmware is relevant when the listed fix matches your symptom. The support catalog lists Retro Mechanical Keyboard v1.72 for Bluetooth reconnection stability and some WPS Office shortcut fixes, as well as an earlier fix for occasional double key inputs over 2.4 GHz. For the Retro R8 Mouse, firmware v10.14 addresses incorrect side-button key values and abnormal single-click behavior. Check the live listing for the version currently offered for your model.
Retro R8 configuration requires a different connection mode
If the Retro R8 works but you cannot configure it in Ultimate Software V2, connect it by USB cable or its 2.4 GHz receiver instead. The Retro R8 FAQ says Ultimate Software V2 configuration is not available over Bluetooth.

Some keyboard manuals describe mode-specific indicators
The Retro Mechanical Keyboard manual excerpt describes connecting the 2.4 GHz adapter to the keyboard’s USB port; its indicator stays solid for 8 seconds and then turns off to indicate a successful connection. For wired use, it says to wait for device recognition. These details apply to the Retro Mechanical Keyboard described by that manual, not every 8BitDo keyboard. Check the manual for your exact model before relying on them.
