If ChatGPT or another AI search service cannot find your pages, inspect the live robots.txt file before changing your site code. A single Disallow: /, a blocked /blog/ path, or a missing OAI-SearchBot rule can prevent OpenAI’s search crawler from accessing articles. The five-minute check below shows exactly what to look for and how to separate search visibility from AI-training controls.

Robots.txt is an access signal, not a guaranteed removal tool. You can allow OAI-SearchBot while disallowing GPTBot, but that policy is only a suitable example after you confirm your licensing and access requirements.

What does robots.txt control?

A robots.txt file tells crawlers which URLs they may access. It is a plain-text file served at the root of each hostname, such as https://example.com/robots.txt. Crawlers read groups made of a User-agent line and rules such as Allow and Disallow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The file controls crawling, not guaranteed indexing. Google explains that a disallowed URL can still appear in search if other pages link to it. If your objective is to keep a page out of an index, use an appropriate noindex directive, authentication, or a removal process instead of relying on robots.txt alone.

Robots policies are also crawler-specific. A rule for one user agent does not automatically define what every other crawler may do, so the exact user-agent groups in the live file matter.

How do I run the five-minute check?

Use the production hostname, not a staging copy or a local file. The inspection takes only a few minutes, but re-open the live file after every edit because a CMS, deployment process, or CDN may be serving a different version.

  1. Open the root file

In a browser, visit https://example.com/robots.txt (replace the hostname with your own production domain). Google’s guidance places robots.txt at the site root. Confirm that the response is the current plain-text file and that you are checking the same hostname used by your public article URLs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Find the broad rule

Search for User-agent: *. Within that group, Disallow: / blocks crawling across the site, while an empty Disallow: explicitly allows crawling for that group. Do not assume a permissive rule elsewhere overrides a more specific group until you have checked the crawler-specific section.

  3. Check the OAI-SearchBot group

Look for User-agent: OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT search. If your site opts out of this crawler, OpenAI says the site will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, although it may still appear as a navigational link.

  4. Inspect every article path

Search for rules covering the directories where your content lives, including /blog/, /articles/, language prefixes, and wildcard patterns. A site-wide rule may be absent while a directory-level rule still blocks every article. Google documents path-specific matching and wildcard syntax, so check the complete path rather than only the homepage.

  5. Save, re-open, and monitor

After editing, fetch the production URL again and verify that the intended text is actually being served. OpenAI’s current documentation says its search systems may take about 24 hours to adjust to a robots.txt change. During that period, keep the previous file available for rollback and watch whether the affected pages begin receiving crawler requests or appearing in results.

Is robots.txt blocking ChatGPT search?

It can, but only if the rule applies to OAI-SearchBot or to a broader group that the crawler follows. A broad User-agent: * block may affect many crawlers, while a dedicated OAI-SearchBot block targets OpenAI’s search crawler directly.

Search visibility and training use are separate controls in OpenAI’s documentation. OAI-SearchBot is associated with surfacing websites in ChatGPT search; GPTBot is documented separately for potential training use. Changing one user-agent group does not automatically change the other.

That separation lets a publisher express a policy such as allowing search access while disallowing GPTBot. It does not create a promise that every page will be indexed, cited, or shown for every query: crawler access is only a prerequisite for discovery.

How can I allow AI search without allowing training crawlers?

A crawler-specific policy can express that preference. The following is an example, not a universal recommendation; confirm your publisher agreements, licensing position, and business goals before deploying it.

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

The first group permits OAI-SearchBot to request site URLs. The second asks GPTBot not to crawl any URL. Keep the groups separate so a later edit to the wildcard policy does not accidentally erase the distinction.

Google supports User-agent, Allow, Disallow, and Sitemap fields. Google does not support crawl-delay, so adding that directive will not make Google slow down. Other crawlers may interpret directives differently; test the behavior of any crawler that matters to your policy.

Before publishing, check for an existing wildcard group and for duplicate groups for the same user agent. Conflicting or duplicated rules are harder to audit. Keep comments brief and operational, and make the policy understandable to the next person who maintains the file.

Why doesn’t Disallow: / remove pages from search?

Disallow: / asks a crawler not to fetch URLs; it does not erase URLs that the crawler already knows from links, sitemaps, or previous crawls. Search engines may retain a URL as an indexed, uncrawled result, sometimes with limited information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Goal Use What it does What it does not guarantee
Limit crawler fetching robots.txt Signals which paths a named crawler may access. Removal from an index or compliance by every bot.
Keep a page out of an index noindex sent in a page response or supported header Requests that compliant search systems exclude the page. Protection from a crawler that cannot or will not fetch the page.
Restrict people and bots from content Authentication or authorization Requires credentials before the server returns the content. Public discovery of the URL if the address has already leaked.
Remove an already-known result Search-engine removal tooling or the relevant index controls Handles a URL that is already present in a search index. Permanent prevention if the content later becomes public again.

Do not combine a robots block with a goal that requires a crawler to read a noindex directive. If the crawler is denied access, it may never see the directive. For private material, authentication is the access boundary; robots.txt is a published preference.

How do path rules and wildcards affect article visibility?

Rules are matched against URL paths. A block for /blog/ can cover every article below that directory while leaving the homepage and other sections crawlable. A pattern that includes a wildcard can catch more URLs than its short appearance suggests, so inspect the entire string and compare it with real article paths.

Check trailing slashes, uppercase and lowercase variants where your server treats them differently, locale folders such as /en/, and alternate hostnames. If your canonical article is under /articles/ but the file blocks only /blog/, the block may be irrelevant; if the canonical URL redirects into a blocked directory, the crawler can still lose access to the destination.

Use the narrowest rule that meets your objective. A site-wide denial is difficult to reconcile with public search, while a directory-specific denial can protect an administrative or experimental area without hiding editorial content. After each change, test representative URLs from every important section rather than checking only the homepage.

Is robots.txt an enforcement mechanism?

No. Cloudflare describes robots.txt compliance as voluntary: it is preference signaling rather than a technical barrier. A well-behaved crawler can honor the file, but a malicious or noncompliant bot can ignore it.

If the requirement is actual blocking, enforce it at the web application firewall, bot-management layer, reverse proxy, or origin server. Those controls can use request attributes and crawler-specific policies to reject traffic. Keep robots.txt aligned with the enforcement rule so legitimate crawlers receive a consistent public signal, but do not treat the text file as a security control.

How should I edit robots.txt safely?

Editing method depends on how your site is hosted. Some systems expose a robots editor in the SEO or site settings panel; others generate the file during deployment; a traditional server may require changing a file in the document root.

  1. Record the current file

Copy the live contents and note the retrieval time. This gives you a rollback version if crawling changes unexpectedly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Identify the source of truth

Determine whether the file is generated by a CMS, checked into a deployment repository, or written directly on the server. Editing a generated file manually may be overwritten on the next publish.

What should I do when AI search still cannot find the site?

First, distinguish a crawl block from a discovery or indexing issue. If OAI-SearchBot is allowed and the article path is not disallowed, robots.txt is no longer the first suspect; inspect redirects, server availability, canonical URLs, and whether the page is actually public.

  • The file shows Disallow: /: remove or narrow it only if public crawling is intended.
  • Only /blog/ or /articles/ is blocked: change that path rule or move the content only after considering existing links and canonical URLs.
  • OAI-SearchBot is blocked but GPTBot is allowed: decide whether search visibility or training-use control is the priority, then edit the specific group.
  • The edited file is not visible: check the CMS generator, deployment output, redirect chain, and CDN cache before making another policy change.
  • Pages remain in conventional search after a block: remember that robots.txt does not guarantee de-indexing; use the appropriate index or access control instead.

OpenAI’s estimate of roughly 24 hours applies to adjustment of its search systems, not to a guarantee of appearance. Keep a dated change log so you can correlate a policy edit with crawler activity and search behavior without repeatedly changing several variables at once.

Which control fits the decision I need to make?

Decision axis Robots.txt choice Alternative or companion control
Search visibility versus training-use control Use separate OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot groups. Review licensing and contractual policies before choosing either setting.
Crawler-specific versus site-wide scope Name the relevant user agent or use a wildcard deliberately. Apply server or WAF rules when the same restriction must be enforced technically.
Advisory signal versus enforcement Publish Allow and Disallow preferences. Reject requests at the origin, proxy, WAF, or bot-management layer.
Crawl blocking versus true index removal Block fetching of paths a crawler should not request. Use noindex, authentication, or removal tooling for index and privacy objectives.

What are the key takeaways?

  • Inspect the production root file first; a single broad or path-specific rule can explain missing AI-search visibility.
  • OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot represent different OpenAI controls, so search access and potential training use can be configured independently.
  • Disallow: / blocks requested crawling but does not guarantee that search indexes forget a URL.
  • Robots.txt is voluntary signaling. Use authentication or network controls when the requirement is real access prevention.
  • After a live edit, allow about 24 hours for OpenAI’s search systems to adjust and verify the served file rather than trusting a local copy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can robots.txt protect confidential information?

No. The file itself is publicly readable, and a disallowed URL can still be discovered through links or other records. Put confidential material behind authentication or authorization and avoid listing sensitive paths as if robots.txt were a security boundary.

Does every hostname share the same robots.txt policy?

No. Crawlers request robots.txt from the hostname they are visiting, so a policy served on one domain or subdomain does not automatically govern another. Check each production hostname that publishes your content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will permitting OAI-SearchBot guarantee that my article appears in ChatGPT answers?

No. Permission allows the crawler to access the URL; it does not promise indexing, ranking, citation, or inclusion for a particular query. Page availability and the search system’s own selection processes still determine what users see.

Should I add a crawl-delay line to slow Google?

Google does not support the crawl-delay directive. If request-rate control is necessary, use server, CDN, or bot-management features designed for that purpose and keep the robots file limited to supported directives.
