If a VPN stopped connecting or began dropping after Windows updated, first prove that ordinary internet access works, then capture the current Windows, driver, profile, protocol, and error details before resetting anything. Recheck the VPN profile, restart Windows, and run Microsoft’s Winsock/TCP-IP/DNS reset commands before touching drivers. Test with a wired USB Ethernet adapter or another device to separate a local adapter problem from a VPN-service or policy problem. Use Windows Network reset only after those reversible steps, because it removes installed adapters and settings and can require VPN and virtual-network software to be configured again.
What should I check first when a VPN fails after a Windows update?
Disconnect the VPN and open a normal website. If the computer cannot reach the internet without the tunnel, repair Wi-Fi or Ethernet first; a VPN cannot negotiate reliably without an underlying connection.
Separate internet failure from VPN failure
Check both Wi-Fi and wired status in Settings > Network & internet. Try more than one ordinary website or service. If nothing loads, the immediate fault is the local connection, not the VPN credentials or remote gateway.
Microsoft’s L2TP/IPsec guidance describes a connection attempt made without internet access waiting about 60 seconds before reporting no response or a modem/communication-device error. That timing is specific to the documented L2TP/IPsec example, not a universal timer for every VPN protocol or client.

Use a second device as a control
Connect another phone or computer to the same Wi-Fi and open a website. If the other device also fails, investigate the access point, modem, or internet service. If the other device works, concentrate on the Windows computer, its adapter, or its VPN configuration.
What information should I record before changing Windows networking?
Write down the current state before deleting a profile, resetting the stack, removing a driver, or restarting. A baseline preserves clues that those actions can erase.
- Windows edition, version, and build number.
- The Windows update installed immediately before the first failure.
- VPN client name, profile name, server address, and protocol, such as IKEv2, SSTP, or L2TP/IPsec.
- The complete error text or code, whether the failure is a timeout, authentication error, disconnect, or “connected but no internet” condition.
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter model, driver version and date, and relevant firmware version.
- The exact local time of a failed attempt, including the time zone if you are sending the case to an administrator.
- Any profile, certificate, smart-card, password, policy, or VPN-client change made around the same time.
Microsoft Learn recommends recording reproduction time and the current driver, firmware, policy, VPN, and update changes before destructive troubleshooting. This record also lets a workplace support team correlate your attempt with gateway or authentication logs.

How do I reconnect or repair the VPN profile?
Use the profile already installed in Windows before rebuilding the client. A wrong server name, sign-in method, certificate requirement, or employer-specific option can look like a Windows networking failure.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > VPN.
- Select the affected profile and choose Connect. Note the exact message and how long it takes to appear.
- Choose Edit and compare the server name, VPN type, sign-in information, username, and any certificate or smart-card option with the settings supplied by the VPN owner.
- Save only confirmed corrections, then try one new connection while noting the time.
Do not guess at a protocol, certificate, or corporate policy value. Microsoft’s Windows setup guidance notes that work users may need a company-provided VPN profile and should obtain the required settings from their support person. Repeatedly entering a password will not fix a profile that requires a certificate or smart card.
When a profile appears to connect and then drops
Check whether the disconnect happens immediately, after idle time, or only when opening a particular internal resource. An immediate drop points toward negotiation, authentication, or adapter state; a drop after traffic begins can involve routing, DNS, or an administrator-enforced session policy. Record the pattern rather than deleting the profile.
Should I restart Windows before resetting anything?
Yes. Restart Windows after confirming the underlying internet connection and checking the profile. A restart reloads the VPN service, network adapters, and pending update components without removing configuration.

After restarting, test the VPN once with other bandwidth-heavy applications closed. If it still fails, continue with the documented network-stack commands rather than repeatedly toggling the VPN switch.
Which commands reset Winsock, TCP/IP, DHCP, and DNS?
Run Microsoft’s sequence from an elevated Command Prompt, then restart and test. These commands reset common Windows networking state, renew the local address lease, and clear the DNS resolver cache; they do not repair an invalid corporate certificate or a remote VPN gateway.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Run each command in this order, waiting for the prompt to return after each one:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm that ordinary internet access works with the VPN disconnected.
- Try the VPN once and record the result and time.
netsh winsock reset rebuilds the Winsock catalog; netsh int ip reset resets TCP/IP parameters; the ipconfig commands release and renew the DHCP lease and flush cached DNS responses. A successful command output does not prove that the VPN server, credentials, or enterprise policy is healthy.
How do I check Windows Update and network-adapter drivers?
Compare the installed Wi-Fi or Ethernet driver and firmware with the current version published by the computer or adapter manufacturer. An update can coincide with a driver or firmware incompatibility, but the version comparison is what identifies that possibility.

Check for a pending Windows update
Open Settings > Windows Update, install any approved pending updates, and restart if Windows requests it. On a managed work computer, follow the organization’s update window and do not install an unapproved driver or rollback that could violate policy.
Inspect the adapter in Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters and open the Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter’s Properties.
- On the Driver tab, record the provider, date, and version. Compare them with the manufacturer’s current package.
- Also inspect the adapter’s status for a device error.
If the failure began after the update and the reversible steps did not help, Microsoft recommends uninstalling the network adapter in Device Manager and restarting so Windows can reinstall it. Download or retain a backup driver first, preferably on another device or removable storage, because removing the only working adapter can leave the PC offline.
Reinstall the adapter only when the evidence supports it
In Device Manager, right-click the affected adapter, choose Uninstall device, confirm the action, and restart. If Windows offers to remove driver software, do so only when you have the manufacturer’s replacement package or a reliable recovery path. After restart, verify ordinary internet access before testing the VPN again.

Can a USB Ethernet adapter or another device identify the cause?
Yes. A USB Ethernet adapter supplies a temporary wired path that bypasses the computer’s built-in Wi-Fi radio and its driver. It is a diagnostic aid, not proof that the VPN service or protocol is healthy.
- Install the USB Ethernet adapter and connect it directly to the router or network switch.
- Disconnect Wi-Fi, confirm that a normal website loads, and try the VPN.
- Compare the result with the built-in adapter under the same VPN profile.
If the VPN works over USB Ethernet but not Wi-Fi, investigate the built-in radio, its driver, firmware, or the access point’s wireless behavior. If both adapters fail while another device succeeds on the same network, focus on Windows or the VPN client. If every device fails, escalate the local network or VPN service rather than repeatedly resetting this computer.
When should I use Windows Network reset?
Use Network reset only after the profile check, restart, command sequence, driver review, and isolation test. Microsoft Support calls network reset the last step because it removes installed network adapters and their settings and reinstalls the adapters after a restart.
Windows 11 path
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings.
- Select Network reset.
- Review the warning, choose Reset now, and allow Windows to restart.
- Reconnect to the required Wi-Fi or wired network, then reinstall or reconfigure software that depended on the old adapter state.
Microsoft warns that after a reset you might need to reinstall and set up VPN client software and virtual switches from Hyper-V. Other network-virtualization tools can require the same treatment. Network reset can also change saved networks to a public profile, so check the network profile and any sharing or firewall behavior afterward.
What to prepare before pressing Reset now
- Have the Wi-Fi name and password available.
- Keep a copy of the VPN installer or administrator-provided profile.
- Record virtual switches, virtual-machine networking, static IP settings, proxy settings, and any custom adapter configuration.
- Make sure you have another way to obtain drivers if the computer does not reconnect automatically.
Do not use Network reset as a routine response to every disconnect. It changes more state than the command reset and can create additional setup work without addressing a remote authentication or policy problem.
What if the VPN connects but there is no internet?
First determine whether the tunnel itself is established or merely shows a connected status. Test an ordinary public site and, separately, a known internal resource. A tunnel can be up while routing or DNS behavior prevents one class of destination from working.
Check DNS and routing symptoms
If public IP-based destinations work but names do not, DNS resolution is a leading area to examine; the ipconfig /flushdns command in the documented sequence clears stale local entries. If public sites work but internal names fail, the VPN’s DNS servers, split-tunnel policy, or administrator profile may be involved. Avoid manually replacing corporate DNS settings without authorization.

For Azure point-to-site clients, DNS behavior can differ over the tunnel because Azure DNS may take precedence. A stale configuration file may also need to be removed before rerunning the administrator-provided installer. These are enterprise-client procedures; obtain the exact package and instructions from the organization that operates the VPN.
Check whether the VPN is blocking all traffic by policy
Some work profiles intentionally require all traffic to pass through the organization. If the profile connects but no public site loads, capture the time and error behavior and ask the administrator whether that policy is expected. Do not change an allowed protocol, certificate, or routing option on your own.

Classify the drop by timing and by network path before changing settings. The pattern tells you which layer to test.
| Observed symptom | Most useful next check | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| VPN will not start and ordinary websites also fail | Repair Wi-Fi or Ethernet; test another device | Underlying internet or adapter problem |
| VPN will not start but ordinary internet works | Verify profile, credentials, certificate, protocol, and error text | Profile, authentication, policy, or remote gateway issue |
| VPN connects, then drops only on Wi-Fi | Try USB Ethernet or another network adapter | Wireless radio, driver, firmware, or access-point path is implicated |
| VPN connects, then drops on every adapter | Check update timing, client version, protocol policy, and administrator logs | Client, protocol, server, or centrally managed policy issue |
| VPN shows connected but public sites fail | Check routing policy and DNS behavior; flush the resolver cache | Full-tunnel policy, DNS, or route problem |
| VPN shows connected but internal names fail | Test a known internal IP or approved internal service and ask the administrator about DNS | Corporate DNS or tunnel configuration issue |
Run one controlled test after each change and record the outcome. Changing several layers at once makes it difficult to tell whether the update, driver, profile, or command reset made a difference.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do with work or enterprise VPNs?
Escalate sooner when the profile is centrally controlled. Work VPNs may require an administrator-provided profile, credentials, certificates, smart cards, allowed protocols, or device-compliance policy that a local user cannot recreate.
Information to send the administrator
- Windows version and build, VPN client and profile name, and protocol.
- The update installed immediately before the failure.
- Adapter driver version and whether a USB Ethernet test changed the result.
- Exact error text, reproduction time, and whether ordinary internet access worked.
- Whether the failure affects one device or multiple devices on the same network.
Do not email private passwords or private-key material. Ask the administrator for a fresh profile or certificate procedure when those are required.

Azure point-to-site qualification
Azure point-to-site clients can retain stale configuration files after a gateway or policy change. The supported remedy may be to remove the stale configuration and rerun the organization’s installer. DNS resolution can also change over the tunnel, with Azure DNS taking precedence; record that symptom rather than substituting public DNS servers.

Which repair should I try first?
The least destructive sequence preserves the most evidence and minimizes reconfiguration.
| Remedy | Layer tested | Reversibility and requirements | Configuration affected |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reconnect or edit the existing profile | VPN profile and authentication | Highly reversible; may require administrator-provided values | Only confirmed profile fields |
| Restart Windows | Services, adapters, and pending update components | Highly reversible; no special rights beyond normal restart | No intentional deletion |
| Winsock/TCP-IP/DNS commands | Local network stack, DHCP lease, and resolver cache | Reversible in effect but requires an elevated Command Prompt | Stack state, lease, and cached DNS entries |
| Driver comparison or reinstall | Wi-Fi/Ethernet adapter and firmware compatibility | Reinstall needs administrator rights and a backup driver | Adapter driver; possible temporary loss of connectivity |
| USB Ethernet or another device | Physical adapter and local network path | Low risk; requires compatible hardware or a second device | No Windows profile deletion |
| Network reset | All installed network adapters and settings | Least reversible; requires rejoining networks and possibly reinstalling VPN or Hyper-V components | Adapters, settings, virtual networking, and possibly network profile classification |
How do I know when the problem is not fixable on this PC?
If ordinary internet works, the profile is confirmed, the command reset and driver checks make no change, and the same VPN fails over both built-in Wi-Fi and USB Ethernet, the remaining causes are often outside the local adapter: client compatibility, gateway availability, authentication, certificate, or centrally enforced protocol policy. A second device using the same VPN is a useful comparison if the organization permits it.
Give support the baseline and controlled-test results instead of reporting only “the VPN is broken.” The update time, protocol, adapter comparison, exact error, and reproduction timestamp let the VPN operator distinguish a Windows change from a gateway or account event.
What should I verify after the VPN starts working?
Confirm more than the tray icon. Disconnect and reconnect once, open an approved internal resource, test an ordinary public site if policy permits, and verify that DNS resolves the names your work requires. If you used USB Ethernet, switch back to the normal adapter and test it separately before returning the loaned adapter.
After a driver reinstall or Network reset, check Wi-Fi or Ethernet profile classification, Hyper-V or other virtual switches, proxy settings, and any VPN client that was reinstalled. Keep the recorded driver and profile details with the incident notes so the next update can be compared quickly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Windows update change my VPN password?
An update does not establish that the password changed. Authentication may instead depend on a profile, certificate, smart card, or enterprise policy; verify the required sign-in method with the VPN administrator before repeatedly changing credentials.
Why does the VPN work on another computer on the same Wi-Fi?
That comparison points toward the original PC’s adapter, driver, client, or profile rather than the shared internet connection. Record whether a USB Ethernet test changes the result, then provide both devices’ protocol and error details to support.

Network reset removes installed adapters and their settings, so the VPN application or profile may need to be reinstalled or configured again. Keep the administrator-provided installer and profile details available before using it.
Should I switch from IKEv2 to SSTP or L2TP/IPsec myself?
Not on a managed connection. The permitted protocol can be part of the server policy, certificate setup, or company profile; changing it without the administrator’s values can create a second configuration problem.
