Most soundbars that produce no audio are not dead: the usual causes are a muted or incorrectly selected input, the TV sending sound to its own speakers, a cable in the wrong port, or an incomplete HDMI-CEC handshake. Audio that does not match the picture is usually corrected with an A/V Sync, Lip-Sync, Audio Delay or Speaker Delay control; Bluetooth may need a separate delay adjustment. Work through the checks below in order, starting with power and source selection, then verify the connection type, temporarily switch to PCM, adjust synchronization, and finally test the soundbar with another source. The sequence applies to HDMI ARC/eARC, optical and Bluetooth installations, with menu names varying by television and soundbar model.
What should I check first when my soundbar has no sound?
Confirm the symptom before changing settings. A moderate-volume test prevents you from mistaking a very quiet source for a failed connection.
- Turn on the television and soundbar. Check that neither display shows mute and raise the soundbar volume to a clearly audible level.
- Press the soundbar remote’s Source or Input button until it matches the physical connection: HDMI ARC/eARC, HDMI, Optical/D.IN or Bluetooth.
- On the TV, open the sound or audio-output menu and choose the external-speaker option rather than TV speakers. The exact label differs by model.
- Disconnect the soundbar briefly and play the same channel, app or device through the TV’s own speakers. If the TV is silent too, troubleshoot the source or television before the soundbar.
- Reseat both ends of the cable. A connector can look inserted while its contacts are not fully engaged.
- Try a different programme, app or input. If only one source is silent, its output format or device settings are more likely than a soundbar hardware fault.
Samsung’s support guidance identifies power, the selected soundbar source and cable connection as the first checks; LG similarly lists an incorrect input, TV output selection and loose cables as common causes. If another device plays normally through the bar, the original TV input or source is implicated rather than the speaker itself.

| Symptom | Most useful first check | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| No sound from any source | Power, mute, source selection and cable seating | A basic control or connection error is likely. |
| TV speakers work but soundbar is silent | TV external-speaker output and the bar’s matching input | The TV is probably routing audio internally or the bar is on the wrong input. |
| Only one app or device is silent | Try another source, then set that source or TV to PCM | An unsupported encoded format or source-specific setting may be involved. |
| Sound arrives before or after lips move | Identify the direction, then use A/V Sync or Audio Delay | The connection is carrying audio, but processing times differ. |
| Sound cuts out intermittently | Reseat or replace the cable and power-cycle both units | An unstable cable or HDMI handshake is more likely than a volume setting. |
How do I connect a soundbar to HDMI ARC or eARC?
Use the television’s port explicitly labeled ARC or eARC and the soundbar’s HDMI OUT port marked ARC. ARC sends TV audio back to the soundbar over that same HDMI cable; no separate audio cable is required. HDMI-CEC must normally be enabled so the devices can discover each other and share power and volume commands.

Check the required hardware and labels
- The TV must have an HDMI input labeled ARC or eARC. A regular HDMI input will not return TV audio.
- The bar must use its HDMI OUT/ARC socket, not an HDMI IN socket intended for a player or set-top box.
- Use a fully seated, undamaged HDMI cable. If the manufacturer specifies a high-speed or eARC-capable cable, use one that meets that specification.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on both products. Common names include Samsung Anynet+, LG SIMPLINK and Sony BRAVIA Sync.
Set up ARC/eARC step by step
- Switch off both devices. Connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/ARC port.
- Power on the TV, then the soundbar. On the TV, open Settings > Sound (or the equivalent audio menu) and select HDMI ARC/eARC or the external-speaker entry corresponding to that port.
- On the soundbar, choose HDMI, D.IN or TV ARC, depending on the model’s naming. The bar’s front display should indicate the selected input.
- In the TV’s device-control or connection menu, turn on HDMI-CEC. Without CEC, ARC discovery and remote-volume control may fail even when the cable is correct.
- Play a known-audible TV source and raise the soundbar volume. Confirm that the TV no longer reports TV speakers as the active output.
What if the TV does not switch to TV ARC?
Perform a complete handshake reset rather than repeatedly changing menus. Turn off both units, unplug their power for about a minute, remove and reconnect the HDMI cable firmly, then power the TV and soundbar back on. Select the ARC input again. Samsung specifically recommends trying a new HDMI cable when the source does not change to TV ARC. If a replacement cable works, retire the original; intermittent ARC failures often return when a marginal cable is moved.
If the bar works from a player connected directly to its HDMI input but not from the TV’s ARC port, the fault is confined to the TV’s ARC configuration, CEC state or cable path. Updating firmware on the TV and soundbar, where the manufacturers provide an update function, can correct compatibility problems before service is considered.
How do I fix a soundbar connected with optical audio?
Optical audio uses the TV’s digital optical OUT and the soundbar’s Optical or D-IN input. It does not use HDMI-CEC, so the TV and bar will not exchange control commands through this cable.
- Remove the small protective caps from both ends of the optical cable. Leaving a cap on can block the light signal.
- Insert one end into the TV’s digital optical output and the other into the soundbar’s Optical/D-IN input. The plug is keyed; do not force it. Push until it is fully seated.
- On the TV, set the digital-audio output to Optical or the equivalent external digital output.
- On the soundbar, select Optical or D-IN. If the bar remains on HDMI ARC or Bluetooth, it will stay silent despite a good optical connection.
- Play a source and test at moderate volume. If there is still no audio, reseat the cable and substitute a known-good optical lead.
LG notes that optical connectors must be correctly oriented and completely inserted. Samsung also advises checking or replacing the cable and matching the bar’s D-IN source. Optical carries digital audio but not the TV’s HDMI control signals, so you may need separate remote-control settings or the soundbar’s own remote for volume.

Could an audio format setting be causing silence?
Yes. A TV can send an encoded Dolby or DTS stream that a particular soundbar input cannot decode. PCM is the fastest compatibility test because PCM-Stereo is the basic mode playable by all soundbars.
- Open the TV’s digital-audio, HDMI-audio or eARC output-format menu.
- Temporarily choose PCM or PCM-Stereo instead of Auto, Bitstream, Pass-through or a surround-only option.
- Replay the same content. If sound returns, the cable and routing are functioning; the previous format was not being accepted or negotiated correctly.
- Check the soundbar manual for supported Dolby and DTS formats. Restore the highest format that both the TV and bar explicitly support, testing after each change.
PCM may remove the original multichannel surround signal, so treat it as a diagnostic and compatibility fallback rather than an automatic quality upgrade. Sony recommends PCM when timing or format negotiation is implicated while noting that the original surround format may no longer be used. If PCM is silent too, return to the connection and output-selection checks instead of changing surround modes repeatedly.
How do I fix audio that is out of sync with the TV picture?
First determine the direction of the error. If lips move before you hear speech, audio is late and needs less delay; if you hear a voice before the mouth moves, audio is early and needs more delay or additional processing on the video path. The control may be called A/V Sync, Lip-Sync, Audio Delay or Speaker Delay.

Adjust synchronization on an HDMI or optical system
- Use the TV’s sound menu or the soundbar’s setup menu to open its synchronization control.
- Start with the control at zero or its neutral position and play a programme with clear speech, such as a news broadcast.
- Change the value in small increments while watching the speaker’s mouth. Stop as soon as speech and picture align; large changes can overshoot and make the opposite error.
- If the source is connected to the TV and the TV sends audio to the bar, adjust the TV’s A/V Sync control first. Sony advises using the soundbar’s SYNC control when available, or the TV control when the source runs through the television.
- Test a second channel or app. A stream can have its own timing offset, so a setting that fixes one source may not suit every source.
Some home-theater systems provide roughly 0–250 milliseconds of manual Audio/Video Sync adjustment, according to Sony’s 2026 TV guidance. That range is model-specific, not a guarantee for every television or bar. If a setting is expressed as a number without units, consult the model manual before assuming that one step equals one millisecond.

LG’s bypass option for all-channel delay
On applicable LG televisions, open Sound > Match Screen and Sound and try Bypass. LG recommends Bypass when all channels show a delay, then turning Bypass off and adjusting TV Speaker Delay if further correction is needed. The labels and availability vary by webOS version and connected device.
Why is Bluetooth sound delayed, and how can I reduce it?
Bluetooth adds a separate encoding, wireless-transmission and decoding path. The television and soundbar can therefore process the same programme at different speeds, causing speech to lead or trail the picture. Sony documents a Bluetooth Delay control from 0 to 500 on applicable models and notes that Bluetooth devices may process audio differently.
- Disconnect phones, tablets and computers that may automatically reconnect to the soundbar. During setup, keep only the intended TV pairing active.
- On the TV or soundbar, open the Bluetooth audio-delay control and adjust it while watching spoken dialogue. Use the smallest change that aligns the picture and sound.
- Disconnect and pair the devices again if the delay suddenly changes after standby or a source switch.
- If the offset remains objectionable, move the connection to HDMI ARC/eARC or optical. A wired path removes the Bluetooth radio and codec delay and is generally more stable for television viewing.
Bluetooth is convenient for music and casual listening, but it may never match the timing consistency of a wired TV connection. A delay control can compensate only within the range the model provides; it cannot repair a pairing failure or a soundbar that is silent on every input.
How can I tell whether the TV, cable or soundbar is faulty?
Change one component at a time and note whether the symptom follows it. This avoids replacing a working soundbar because of a TV setting.

| Test | Procedure | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Different content on the same TV | Try a broadcast channel, a built-in app and an external player. | Silence limited to one source points to that source’s output format or settings. |
| Another cable | Replace the HDMI or optical cable with a known-good cable of the required type. | If audio returns, the original cable or its connector is defective. |
| Another source into the bar | Connect a player or other audio source to an available soundbar input and select that input. | Sound from the test source indicates the bar’s amplifier and speakers work; investigate the TV path. |
| Another television | If possible, connect the bar to a second ARC-capable TV or use optical from another TV. | Failure on multiple TVs and sources implicates the soundbar or its power supply. |
| Direct source-to-soundbar HDMI | Connect a compatible player directly to the bar, bypassing TV ARC. | Working direct audio isolates the ARC/CEC return path as the problem. |
After each change, select the matching input and use a known-audible recording. Keep a note of which combinations work; that record is useful when contacting support. Samsung recommends cross-device testing and service escalation when the bar fails across inputs. Check for firmware updates and the model manual before arranging service; Sony includes software updates and direct source-to-soundbar HDMI among remedies for persistent timing problems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which connection should I use for a TV soundbar?
The best choice depends on the TV’s ports, the formats you need and how much synchronization or remote integration matters.
| Connection | What it requires | Format and control considerations | When it is the practical choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | TV ARC/eARC port, soundbar HDMI OUT/ARC port, HDMI cable and HDMI-CEC enabled | Supports TV-return audio; eARC-capable systems can carry more advanced formats. CEC enables shared power and volume control. | Use first when both devices support ARC/eARC and you want one-cable TV audio with integrated remote control. |
| Optical | TV optical OUT, soundbar Optical/D-IN input, correctly oriented and fully seated optical cable | Digital audio without HDMI-CEC control. Output format must match what the bar accepts; PCM is a universal test. | Use when ARC is unavailable or its handshake remains unreliable. |
| Bluetooth | Compatible Bluetooth pairing with the TV and soundbar | Wireless processing can create a picture offset; a model-specific delay control may range from 0 to 500 on applicable Sony systems. | Use for convenience or when no wired output is available, accepting that timing may be less consistent. |
Whichever path you choose, keep the soundbar input and TV output on the same connection name. A technically superior link still produces silence if the bar is listening to Optical while the TV is sending ARC, or if the TV is set to its internal speakers.
What should I do if sound works but keeps cutting out?
- Power-cycle the TV and bar and reseat the cable before changing advanced audio formats.
- For HDMI, verify that the cable remains in the ARC/eARC-labeled TV port and the bar’s HDMI OUT/ARC port. A cable moved to a neighboring HDMI input breaks the return path.
- For optical, check that both plugs are fully inserted and that protective caps were removed. Replace a cable that has sharp bends or a damaged connector.
- Set the TV to PCM temporarily. Stable PCM with dropouts on an encoded format indicates a format-negotiation or decoding mismatch.
- Remove nearby Bluetooth devices from the pairing list or disconnect them if they are stealing the connection.
- Install available firmware updates for both devices, then repeat the source test.
If dropouts occur with every input, every cable and a second TV, stop changing settings and contact the soundbar manufacturer. No broad failure-rate, repair-cost or success-rate statistic establishes that a particular repair will work, so service diagnosis is more reliable than replacing parts at random.

When should I contact the manufacturer?
Escalate after you have confirmed power, volume, input selection, the correct TV output, a seated or replacement cable, PCM output, a second source and any available firmware update. Provide support with the exact model numbers, connection type, TV audio-output setting, soundbar input display and the results of your cross-device tests.
Service is appropriate when the soundbar remains silent from multiple known-good sources, fails on another compatible TV, will not power on normally, or repeatedly loses audio after a successful handshake. If only the original television fails while the bar works elsewhere, contact the TV manufacturer instead and describe the ARC/CEC or optical tests you completed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I leave HDMI ARC and optical connected at the same time?
You can connect both, but the soundbar plays only the input currently selected. Having two cables does not combine their signals; select one path deliberately while troubleshooting so the active route is unambiguous.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do I know whether my TV supports eARC rather than ordinary ARC?
Look for the literal “eARC” label beside the HDMI socket or in the TV’s sound-information screen and manual. A port marked only “ARC” supports ARC functions but does not by itself establish eARC capability.
Why does the soundbar work with a game console but not with TV apps?
The console may be connected directly to a soundbar HDMI input, while TV apps rely on the ARC return channel. Check the TV’s external-speaker selection, HDMI-CEC state and ARC-labeled port, then test PCM to rule out an app’s encoded output.
Why did changing to PCM make surround sound disappear?
PCM-Stereo prioritizes compatibility and may carry two-channel audio instead of the source’s Dolby or DTS surround stream. Once the connection is stable, choose the highest surround format that both the TV and soundbar explicitly support.
