First identify how the mouse connects: Bluetooth, a dedicated USB receiver, or a cable. Each uses a different fix. Then check its power and follow the steps for that connection type. A wireless mouse is not necessarily a Bluetooth mouse.
Start with the connection type and power
Look at the mouse, its packaging, or its manual to identify the connection method. Bluetooth mice pair through the laptop’s Bluetooth settings. Receiver-based wireless mice need the compatible USB receiver that came with the mouse. Wired mice connect directly by cable. Logitech provides separate setup steps for Bluetooth and receiver-based mice, and receiver compatibility depends on the model: Bluetooth setup and receiver troubleshooting.
Switch the mouse on. If it uses replaceable batteries, check their orientation and try fresh batteries of the type specified for that model. If it is rechargeable, charge it using the manufacturer’s instructions. Power and battery checks are included in Microsoft’s Surface mouse and keyboard guidance.
If it is a Bluetooth mouse
Check Bluetooth on the laptop
On Windows, confirm the laptop supports Bluetooth and that Bluetooth is turned on. Turn off airplane mode, then put the mouse into pairing or discoverable mode using its model-specific instructions. Remove the old pairing and pair again
- Open the laptop’s Bluetooth settings and find the mouse in the list of paired devices.
- Remove or forget the mouse.
- Put the mouse into pairing mode again.
- Choose the mouse from the laptop’s available Bluetooth devices and complete the on-screen steps.
If the mouse does not appear, check that it is still in pairing mode and that the laptop’s Bluetooth is on. Logitech’s Bluetooth setup instructions explain the general pairing flow; button locations and pairing controls are model-specific.
Check for interference
Move the mouse closer to the laptop and away from potential sources of wireless interference. Microsoft notes that some unshielded USB 3.0 devices can interfere with Bluetooth. If a USB 3.0 device or cable is close to the laptop’s Bluetooth hardware, disconnect it briefly or move it away and try pairing again.

Run Windows diagnostics and check drivers
For Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app and to driver-update steps in Device Manager. Follow the current instructions in its Bluetooth troubleshooting guide. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; its settings and support context differ from Windows 11.
If it uses a wireless USB receiver
- Confirm you have the receiver compatible with this exact mouse; a generic USB receiver may not work.
- Plug the receiver directly into a working USB port on the laptop, not through a hub, dock, or switch.
- Try another USB port. If the mouse or receiver has a connect or reset control, use the instructions for that model to reconnect them.
- Move the receiver and mouse away from nearby wireless or electronic devices, then test the connection again.
Microsoft recommends checking USB ports and bypassing hubs when troubleshooting a mouse, and Logitech’s receiver guidance discusses direct connections and possible interference: Microsoft USB and receiver troubleshooting and Logitech connection troubleshooting. Some Logitech guidance refers to legacy devices, so follow the instructions for your specific model.

If it is a wired USB mouse
- Unplug the mouse and reconnect it firmly.
- Try a different USB port on the laptop.
- If it is connected through a hub, dock, or switch, connect it directly to the laptop for the test.
- Check the cable and connector for visible damage. If possible, test the mouse on another computer.
Microsoft’s Windows mouse and keyboard troubleshooting steps recommend checking the port and testing a USB device directly rather than through a hub.
Find out whether the mouse or laptop is at fault
Test the mouse on another computer, using the correct connection method. If it works there, the original laptop’s Bluetooth settings, USB port, or drivers are more likely places to investigate. If it fails on another computer too, the mouse may need service or replacement. Microsoft recommends this cross-computer check, while cautioning that a device may require the correct driver to work on the test computer: Surface mouse testing guidance and Windows mouse troubleshooting.

When to consider an adapter or replacement
Do not buy a Bluetooth adapter or receiver until you know what the laptop and mouse support. If the laptop lacks Bluetooth, an adapter may help only if it is compatible with the laptop and operating system. If the mouse requires a receiver, verify that any replacement receiver is compatible with the exact mouse model. If the mouse fails on another computer after power and connection checks, replacement may be appropriate; Microsoft lists it as a possible next step when a device does not work on another PC.
