A Carbonite backup that appears stuck usually needs a status-specific fix, not a blind reinstall. Open Carbonite and read the exact message first: Backup is paused, Preparing to back up, Waiting for an internet connection, Your backup is out of date, and Your backup is paused while in Recover Mode each point to a different action. Resume or exit the relevant mode, restore internet access, use Windows Restart rather than only Shut down, update Carbonite, and check Mac permissions when applicable. Reinstall only when the backup remains out of date after those checks, then escalate persistent failures that suggest disk or system damage.

What does each Carbonite status mean?

The status text is the quickest way to distinguish a normal scan from a blocked backup. Record the wording before changing settings.

Displayed status What it indicates First action
Backup is paused Carbonite is not sending files until the pause is lifted. Choose Resume in Carbonite.
Preparing to back up Carbonite is scanning files changed within the last 24 hours. This is a preparation phase, not proof of a failed process. Allow the scan to continue while checking that the computer remains online.
Waiting for an internet connection Carbonite cannot reach its service because the computer is offline or connectivity is blocked. Restore the connection, then restart the computer or Carbonite and check the status again.
Your backup is out of date Carbonite has not completed a current backup and needs additional troubleshooting. After connectivity, restart, update, and permission checks, sign in and reinstall Carbonite if the warning remains.
Your backup is paused while in Recover Mode Recover Mode temporarily suspends ordinary backup activity during recovery work. Exit Recover Mode; normal backup cannot resume until you do.

How do I fix a Carbonite backup that is paused or in Recover Mode?

A normal pause is reversible from the Carbonite controls. Recover Mode requires a separate exit action before ordinary backups can start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resume a normal pause

  1. Open the Carbonite application.
  2. Read the status area to confirm it says the backup is paused.
  3. Select Resume.
  4. Wait for the status to change, then verify that files are being considered for backup rather than remaining paused.

If the pause returns immediately, note whether another message appears. A recurring pause can be caused by Recover Mode, a connectivity problem, or a permission restriction, so continue with the branch that matches the new status instead of repeatedly selecting Resume.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Exit Recover Mode

  1. Open Carbonite and confirm that the message specifically mentions Recover Mode.
  2. Use the control to leave or exit Recover Mode.
  3. Return to the main backup view and check that the status is no longer paused.

Do not treat Recover Mode as an ordinary pause. Carbonite keeps normal backup suspended until recovery mode is closed.

What should I do when Carbonite says it is waiting for an internet connection?

Restore the computer’s internet connection first, then restart and recheck Carbonite. If the connection is working but the backup later remains out of date, move to the update and reinstall steps rather than assuming the original outage is still the cause.

  1. Confirm that the computer can reach other websites or online services.
  2. If it is offline, reconnect to the network or resolve the local connection problem.
  3. Once connectivity is restored, restart the computer or Carbonite and open the application again.
  4. Read the new status. A return to normal preparation indicates that the connection was the blocker; an out of date warning requires the next level of troubleshooting.

On a Mac, a working internet connection does not guarantee that Carbonite is allowed to communicate. Check the firewall instructions below if the waiting message persists despite normal web access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is Carbonite not running on Windows?

On Windows, perform a full Restart from the power menu, not merely Shut down. Carbonite explains that hybrid shutdown can leave services without a complete fresh start, while Restart reloads the operating system and installed services.

  1. Save open work.
  2. Open the Windows power menu and choose Restart.
  3. Let Windows finish starting and allow background services to load.
  4. Open Carbonite and record the status again.
  5. Install the latest available Carbonite update after the restart.

The distinction matters because a shutdown may use Windows hybrid-shutdown behavior. Carbonite Support’s instruction is explicit: “Please specifically use the Restart option from your power options to ensure the OS and all installed services are getting a fresh start.”

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

If the status changes from paused or waiting to preparation, the restart corrected the service state. If it still says out of date, continue with account verification and a reinstall rather than repeating shutdown cycles.

Which Mac permissions can stop Carbonite from backing up?

On macOS, verify both privacy access and network permission. Carbonite can appear installed and connected while still being unable to read protected files or communicate through the Mac firewall.

Grant Full Disk Access

  1. Open System Settings (called System Preferences on older macOS releases).
  2. Open Privacy & Security, then Full Disk Access.
  3. Locate Carbonite and turn access on. Authenticate with an administrator password if macOS requests it.
  4. Quit and reopen Carbonite, then inspect the displayed status.

Menu names vary by macOS version, but the relevant control is the privacy panel’s Full Disk Access list. If Carbonite is absent, use the panel’s add control and select the installed Carbonite application.

Check the Mac firewall

  1. Open the macOS firewall settings (under Network or Privacy & Security, depending on the macOS release).
  2. Make sure Carbonite is allowed to accept the connections it needs.
  3. Reopen Carbonite and test the status after the permission change.

Also check Carbonite’s own interface or preference pane for a pause setting. A firewall exception cannot overcome an intentional pause, and granting Full Disk Access does not automatically resume a paused backup.

Is “Preparing to back up” actually stuck?

Usually not. Carbonite uses this state to scan files changed within the last 24 hours before it begins or continues uploading them.

Rank #3
Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

A long preparation phase can also be the visible part of a slow workload. Carbonite says speed depends on your internet speed, the amount of data selected, computer speed, and other services competing for upload capacity. A large file or a busy connection can therefore make the indicator look motionless even though Carbonite is processing work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check whether the status remains Preparing to back up rather than changing to an error or out-of-date warning.
  • Keep the computer connected while the scan and upload proceed.
  • Consider whether another service is using the same upload capacity.
  • Do not label the process failed solely because the visible indicator changes slowly.

If the status instead says waiting for an internet connection, apply the connectivity procedure. If it says out of date after the computer has been online, use the reinstall path.

When should I update Carbonite?

Update after the initial status and restart checks, and before reinstalling. Carbonite Support includes using the latest available version as a standard step for backups that are not operating correctly.

  1. Open Carbonite after the computer restart or Mac permission check.
  2. Use its update control, or download the current installer through your Carbonite account if the application directs you there.
  3. Complete the update, reopen Carbonite if necessary, and read the status again.

An update can correct a service or compatibility problem without disturbing the existing installation. If the warning remains Your backup is out of date, reinstalling is the next documented application-level remedy.

How do I reinstall Carbonite when the backup is out of date?

Reinstall only after restoring connectivity, restarting, updating, and checking Mac permissions where relevant. Before removing the application, make sure the files you still need are present on the computer and that you can sign in to the Carbonite account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Prepare safely

  • Confirm that the computer contains the original files you expect Carbonite to protect.
  • Verify that you know the Carbonite account credentials needed to activate the installation.
  • Note the folders or drives currently selected for backup so you can compare selections after setup.
  • If a recovery operation is in progress, finish it or exit Recover Mode before attempting normal backup repair.

Reinstall and recheck selections

  1. Sign in to your Carbonite account and obtain the installer for your operating system.
  2. Remove or replace the existing Carbonite installation when the installer directs you to do so.
  3. Install the current application and sign in.
  4. Review backup selections carefully; a reinstall can leave a folder unselected if you do not confirm the configuration.
  5. Open the status view and verify that Carbonite is no longer reporting an out-of-date backup.

Reinstalling addresses a damaged or incomplete application installation; it does not repair a failing hard drive, file-system errors, malware, or a mechanical fault. If the warning returns after a clean installation and correct selections, investigate the computer itself and contact Carbonite Support.

Could a disk or system problem be preventing backup?

Yes. Persistent failure after connectivity, restart, update, permissions, and reinstall checks can indicate a problem below the Carbonite application.

Carbonite lists malware, bad drive sectors, file-system errors, and mechanical failures as examples of underlying issues that can prevent proper backup. Symptoms may include repeated errors on the same files, a drive that disappears or reports read/write problems, operating-system warnings, or other applications failing at the same time.

  • Check the operating system for disk or file-system warnings.
  • Run your established malware and security checks.
  • Record whether errors involve one drive, a specific folder, or the entire selection.
  • Stop escalating through repeated reinstalls when other programs also show disk or system faults.

A qualified technician can diagnose hardware or file-system damage. Carbonite Support is the appropriate next contact for application-specific failures that remain after the documented troubleshooting sequence.

Paused while in Recover Mode Exit Recover Mode, then check normal backup status. The application cannot leave recovery mode or remains paused afterward.
Waiting for an internet connection Restore internet access, restart, and recheck. Other services work but Carbonite still cannot connect after restart and Mac firewall checks.
Windows service appears inactive Use Restart, allow startup to finish, and update Carbonite. The status remains out of date after the current version is installed.
Mac cannot access files or connect Grant Full Disk Access, allow the app through the firewall, and remove any pause. Permissions are correct but backup still fails or system-wide errors appear.
Out-of-date warning persists Sign in, reinstall Carbonite, and confirm backup selections. The warning returns after reinstall or symptoms point to disk, malware, or file-system damage.

What should I check before contacting Carbonite Support?

Support can work faster when you provide the exact state rather than a general report that Carbonite is “stuck.” Prepare:

  • The precise status wording shown in Carbonite.
  • Your operating system, including whether the problem is on Windows or Mac.
  • Whether the computer was online when the message appeared.
  • Whether you used Windows Restart, updated Carbonite, checked Mac permissions, or reinstalled.
  • Whether the failure affects all selected data or appears tied to a drive, folder, or group of files.
  • Any simultaneous disk, malware, or file-system warnings.

Carbonite Support notes that Carbonite backs up automatically but that circumstances can prevent it from backing up properly. If the documented steps do not clear the warning, provide this context instead of repeatedly changing settings or reinstalling.

What is the shortest safe troubleshooting path?

Read the status, apply only the matching fix, and escalate when the application-level remedies are exhausted. The sequence below avoids treating a normal scan as a failure while still giving an out-of-date backup a clear recovery route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the exact Carbonite status.
  2. Resume a normal pause or exit Recover Mode.
  3. Restore internet access if Carbonite is waiting for a connection.
  4. On Windows, choose Restart; do not rely only on Shut down.
  5. Update Carbonite to the latest available version.
  6. On Mac, verify Full Disk Access, firewall permission, and pause state.
  7. If the backup remains out of date, sign in and reinstall Carbonite, then recheck selections.
  8. Investigate disk or system faults and contact Carbonite Support when failures continue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will reinstalling Carbonite delete the files on my computer?

Reinstalling the application is intended to replace the backup software, not erase your personal files. Confirm that the files you need are still on the computer and review the backup selections after signing in again.

Why can Carbonite look inactive when my internet is working?

A working browser connection does not prove that Carbonite can read protected files or pass through the Mac firewall. Full Disk Access and firewall permissions can block Carbonite independently of general internet access.

Should I restart Windows by shutting it down first and then turning it on?

No. Carbonite specifically directs Windows users to choose Restart from the power options so the operating system and installed services receive a fresh start.

What if only one drive keeps producing backup errors?

Repeated failures limited to one drive or folder can point to bad sectors, file-system errors, or a mechanical problem rather than a Carbonite pause. Check that drive for operating-system warnings and seek qualified technical help if other applications also report trouble.
