If ChatGPT opens to a white or empty page, start with a hard refresh (Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+R). If that does not restore the interface, sign out and back in, clear site data for ChatGPT, disable extensions and content blockers, and retry in a private window or another browser. Then turn off VPN, proxy, secure-DNS, or corporate filtering and test another network or device. Check status.openai.com before spending time on deeper changes. Failures that continue across independent browsers, devices, and networks should be documented with browser-console errors and a timestamped HAR file for OpenAI Support.
Why is ChatGPT showing a blank screen?
A blank ChatGPT screen usually means the web interface did not finish loading, rather than that your conversation itself is empty. The cause can be local browser state, an extension or content blocker, network filtering, or an OpenAI-side incident.
Cached files and cookies can leave the site with an incomplete session. Extensions that rewrite pages, block scripts, or filter advertising and tracking can also prevent interface components from rendering. VPNs, proxies, secure DNS, and corporate security gateways may block or alter the requests ChatGPT needs. Less often, a service or frontend-delivery incident prevents the required static files from arriving at all.
OpenAI has described an incident in which misconfigured CDN security protections blocked static files needed to display responses; correcting those protections restored functionality. That example shows why a browser change alone cannot fix every blank page, but it does not prove that any current failure is an outage.

What should I try first when ChatGPT loads but nothing appears?
Use this order: reload, re-authenticate, reset site data, remove browser interference, isolate the session, test the connection, check service health, and finally collect evidence. The early steps are quick and reversible; later steps tell you whether the fault is local, on your network, or service-side.
- Hard-refresh the page. Press
Cmd+Shift+Ron macOS orCtrl+Shift+Ron Windows and Linux. This requests fresh page resources instead of relying on the current cached copy. If you use the desktop app, perform its force-reload action or fully quit and reopen it. - Sign out and sign back in. A stale authentication session can leave the shell loaded without usable content. Complete the sign-out, close the tab, reopen ChatGPT, and authenticate again.
- Clear ChatGPT site data. Remove cookies and stored site data for
chatgpt.comand, where your account still uses it,chat.openai.com. Reopen the site after deletion; you will need to sign in again. - Temporarily disable extensions and content blockers. Turn off ad blockers, privacy tools, script controls, and other extensions for ChatGPT, then reload. If the page returns, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the conflicting one.
- Open a clean session. Try a private or incognito window. If that works, test a fresh browser profile or a different browser; private windows generally start without your normal cookies and many extensions.
- Test the connection. Disconnect from a VPN, proxy, secure-DNS service, or security filter and reload. Then try another network, such as a phone hotspot, or another device.
- Check service health. Visit status.openai.com. An active incident can produce the same white page on otherwise healthy devices, so checking status prevents unnecessary local changes.
- Escalate with evidence. If the problem survives independent browsers, devices, and networks, capture console errors and a HAR file with timestamps before contacting OpenAI Support.
How do I hard-refresh ChatGPT correctly?
A normal refresh can reuse a damaged cached script. A hard refresh tells the browser to request the page’s current resources again, making it the lowest-cost first test.
Windows and Linux
Focus the ChatGPT tab and press Ctrl+Shift+R. Wait for the tab to finish loading rather than opening several duplicate tabs. If the page remains white, continue to the sign-out step instead of repeating the refresh indefinitely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsmacOS
Focus the tab and press Cmd+Shift+R. In the desktop application, use its force-reload command if available, or quit the application completely and launch it again.
What a successful result looks like
The navigation, conversation list, and message composer should all return. If only one conversation remains blank while the rest of the interface works, note that distinction for Support; it indicates a different symptom from a page that never renders.
How do I reset ChatGPT cookies and cached site data?
Deleting only the general browser cache may leave ChatGPT’s cookies or local storage untouched. Remove data for the ChatGPT domain itself, then start a new session.
Browser-neutral method
- Open ChatGPT in the affected tab.
- Select the site-information icon at the left of the address bar.
- Open the cookies or site-data controls and choose the option to remove stored data for that site.
- Close every ChatGPT tab, reopen the site, and sign in.
Browser labels vary by version. If the site-information menu does not expose deletion, open the browser’s privacy settings, search the stored-site-data list for chatgpt.com and chat.openai.com, delete those entries, and retry.

Site data stores authentication state and locally cached application information. A stale or inconsistent copy can make the browser request resources with an invalid session, leaving a shell or white page. Clearing it also removes your local sign-in state, so have your sign-in method available.
Could an extension or content blocker be causing the white page?
Yes. Extensions can block scripts, modify requests, inject page code, or apply privacy rules that ChatGPT does not expect. A private window is a quick isolation test, but some browsers allow extensions in private mode, so a direct disable test is more conclusive.
- Open the browser’s extensions or add-ons manager.
- Disable ad-blocking, privacy, script-control, translation, password-injection, and security extensions temporarily.
- Reload ChatGPT.
- If it works, re-enable extensions individually and reload after each change.
Do not permanently remove an extension merely because the private-window test succeeds; first identify whether one specific extension is responsible. Keep a note of the extension name and version if you need to report the conflict.

How can private browsing, another browser, or another device diagnose the problem?
These tests change one control surface at a time. A result that changes with the browser points toward local state or extensions; a result that changes with the network points toward filtering; a failure everywhere is more consistent with an account or service-side problem.
| Test | If ChatGPT works | What it isolates |
|---|---|---|
| Private or incognito window | Normal window is misconfigured | Cookies, cached data, and extensions allowed only in the normal profile |
| Fresh browser profile | Original profile is at fault | Profile settings, stored permissions, and add-ons |
| Different browser | Original browser is at fault | Browser-specific cache, rendering, or extension behavior |
| Different device on the same network | First device is at fault | Device software and local security controls |
| Different network | Original network is filtering traffic | VPN, proxy, DNS, firewall, or URL-filter policy |
| Several browsers, devices, and networks all fail | No local configuration explains it | Possible account or OpenAI service issue; verify status |
This is diagnostic inference, not a guarantee. For example, a service incident can affect only a region or account tier, while a local security product can be installed on several devices. Record which combinations you tested and the exact times.
What network settings can stop ChatGPT from rendering?
VPNs, HTTP proxies, secure-DNS services, and security filters can block or rewrite requests for authentication, application scripts, or API endpoints. Temporarily disable those controls and retry, then test a separate network to determine whether the policy is involved.
Home or personal network
- Disconnect the VPN and reload.
- Disable a manually configured proxy in the operating system or browser.
- Temporarily switch from secure DNS to the network’s default resolver.
- Try a mobile hotspot or another trusted connection.
Restore each protection after testing. The purpose is to isolate the cause, not to leave your device unprotected.
Work, school, or managed network
Ask the network administrator to check whether URL filtering, TLS inspection, proxy rewriting, or firewall rules are interfering. OpenAI’s network guidance says relevant OpenAI domains, including *.auth.openai.com and *.chatgpt.com, should not be blocked or rewritten by URL filters. If private browsing and another network are unavailable or ineffective, involve IT rather than changing managed settings yourself.

How do I know whether ChatGPT is down?
Use status.openai.com, OpenAI’s authoritative service-health page, before performing extensive browser surgery. Look for an incident whose affected component and start time match your symptom.
A status page that shows no incident does not prove your browser is at fault: incidents can begin after the page updates, affect a subset of users, or be limited to a region. Conversely, an incident report does not mean every blank screen has the same cause. Compare the status timeline with your own tests and timestamps.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if ChatGPT is still blank after all local tests?
When the page fails in independent browsers, devices, and networks, stop repeatedly clearing data and prepare a useful support report. OpenAI’s Help Center describes this symptom as content not displaying, getting stuck loading, or becoming unresponsive without an explicit error message.
Capture browser-console errors
- Open the browser’s developer tools and select the Console panel.
- Reload ChatGPT while the console is visible.
- Record red errors, blocked-resource messages, failed domain names, and the exact time, including your time zone.
- Copy the relevant text into a plain-text note; do not edit the error wording.
Console output can contain account or request details. Review it for secrets before sharing, and follow Support’s instructions for secure submission.

Capture a HAR file
- Open developer tools and select the Network panel.
- Enable the option that preserves the log, clear existing entries, and reload the page.
- Reproduce the blank screen and wait until requests stop changing.
- Use the panel’s export or “Save all as HAR” command.
- Name the file with the date and time, and note the browser version, operating system, account type, affected URL, and whether another browser, device, or network reproduced the problem.
A HAR file can contain cookies, authorization headers, or message content. Treat it as sensitive and upload it only through the official Support workflow when requested; never post it publicly.
Best Value
What to include in the support request
- The first time the blank screen appeared and the most recent reproduction time, with time zone.
- Whether the page is completely white, shows a spinner, or displays navigation without conversations.
- Results of private-window, different-browser, different-device, and different-network tests.
- Whether VPN, proxy, secure DNS, extensions, or corporate filtering were enabled.
- Relevant console errors and the timestamped HAR file, submitted through the channel Support specifies.
What common mistakes make troubleshooting slower?
- Refreshing repeatedly without changing a variable: one hard refresh is a test; endless repeats do not distinguish a cache issue from an outage.
- Clearing all browser data immediately: start with ChatGPT’s site data so you do not lose unrelated sessions and saved preferences.
- Testing only another tab: two tabs share the same profile, extensions, cookies, and network. Use a private session, fresh profile, or different browser instead.
- Disabling security tools permanently: turn them off only long enough to isolate the cause, then restore protection.
- Assuming a green status page rules out every problem: status checks are essential but should be combined with isolation tests and timestamps.
- Sending Support an unexplained HAR: pair the file with reproduction times, browser and device details, and the exact isolation results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does ChatGPT work in a private window but not my normal browser window?
The private session normally starts without the affected profile’s cookies, cached application state, and most extensions. Re-enable extensions one at a time and clear only ChatGPT’s stored data in the normal profile to find the specific conflict.
Can a corporate web filter cause a blank ChatGPT page even when other websites work?
Yes. ChatGPT depends on authentication and application resources that a URL filter, proxy, or TLS-inspection gateway may block or rewrite selectively. Ask your administrator to review OpenAI domains such as *.auth.openai.com and *.chatgpt.com.
What is the difference between a browser-console log and a HAR file?
A console log records client-side errors and warnings, while a HAR records the network requests and responses made during reproduction. Support may need both to determine whether rendering code failed locally or a required request was blocked.
