Start by identifying the destination country and local education authority, then use that authority’s official address or postcode finder and read each school’s admissions policy. A catchment result can help build a shortlist, but it does not by itself establish that your child will get a place.
1. Identify the education jurisdiction and school phase
Before searching an address, establish the country, local authority or district, the child’s age and school phase, and the intended entry year. School-finding systems and admission rules are local; there is no single catchment map or definition for the UK or internationally. GOV.UK’s England performance page directs users to separate services for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland: Compare the performance of schools and colleges in England.
Also identify whether you are considering a state-funded or other school type. The responsible admission authority and its published arrangements determine how applications are prioritised.
2. Look up each candidate address with the official finder
- Enter the full candidate address or postcode in the relevant council, district, or education authority’s school or catchment finder. Search the school phase and entry year that apply to your child.
- Record the schools returned for every address under consideration. Treat property-listing maps and third-party checkers as leads, not confirmation; check the responsible authority’s published map and admissions policy.
- Note the checker’s measurement method. Methods differ. Queensland’s state-school guidance links to EdMap and defines the local measure as the shortest, most direct road route to the school’s main entrance. Buckinghamshire Council’s checker reports straight-line distance to the nearest open gate and cautions that its result may differ slightly from official allocation calculations.
These examples are not interchangeable rules. See the Queensland Government catchment guidance and Buckinghamshire Council school-place checker for their respective local methods.

3. Read the current admissions arrangements
For each school on your shortlist, find the policy for the intended year of entry and check how it ranks applications when there are more applicants than places. Look for:
- Whether the school uses a catchment or designated area at all; some schools use different rules, including parish-based areas.
- How the policy defines the home address and measures distance, including any tie-break method.
- The order of priority criteria, such as siblings, faith criteria at some religiously designated schools, or other locally published categories.
- What happens if applications exceed available places and whether the authority publishes allocation or availability information.
Catchment is not a promise of admission. Buckinghamshire Council states: “An address in the catchment area does not guarantee you a place at the school.” Its checker refers to policies for 2027 entry; check the policy applying to your own entry year rather than relying on a prior or future version. England’s guidance explains that admission authorities apply their published arrangements when a school is oversubscribed: Information on obtaining a school place in England when relocating.

4. Compare schools on fit as well as location
Once you have a realistic list of schools for the relevant phase, compare evidence that matters to your family—not just the nearest school or a single headline rating. England’s official school and college performance service provides exam and test results, Ofsted reports, and financial information. School Profiles adds admissions, policies, curriculum, extracurricular activities, and academic performance information.
For inspection information in England, Ofsted’s Explore an area lets you search by postcode or local authority, filter provision, and save schools for side-by-side comparison of inspection dates, grades, and provider details. Read the date and scope of any inspection or results alongside the figures; they describe published evidence, not every aspect of a school or your child’s likely experience.

Use a working comparison table to keep address-specific questions separate from general school information:
| Compare | What to record |
|---|---|
| Address and entry year | Catchment or designated-area status for the exact address and intended year |
| Admissions | Admission authority, oversubscription criteria, and any published allocation or availability information |
| Distance | Measurement method and any distance tie-break in the policy |
| Outcomes and inspection | Performance results and inspection dates and outcomes |
| School offer | Curriculum, policies, and activities relevant to the child |
| Travel | Route, travel distance, and practical school-run constraints |
| Unresolved points | Questions that need written confirmation from the school or authority |
5. Confirm uncertain cases before committing to a move
Contact the school or admission authority if the address is near a boundary, the checker and policy appear inconsistent, a school uses different rules, or your housing decision depends on a particular place. Ask whether the address qualifies for the intended entry year, which distance calculation is used, and whether allocation or capacity information is available. Keep the answer with your comparison notes.

For an in-year move in England, contact the new council’s admissions team early. The application route can vary by area and school type, and popular schools may already be full. Confirm the current local process and dates directly rather than relying on examples in guidance that may refer to past admission years.
