Command Prompt cannot show your complete 25-character Microsoft Office product key. Microsoft’s documented OSPP.VBS /dstatus command reports licensing information and the last five characters of the installed key; for Microsoft 365 and most newer Office installations, use the linked Microsoft account to activate or reinstall Office.
Follow the steps below to check the installed license, find the right script path, or identify the account associated with Office.

Microsoft does not display the complete product key inside Office for security reasons. Claims that this command reveals the full key are incorrect for Microsoft’s documented method.
Check your Office version
- Open Word, Excel, or another Office application.
- Select File → Account. If Account is not visible, select File → Help.
- Under Product Information, note the Office product name and version.
The script folder is commonly named Office16 for Office 2016 and Office 2019, and Office15 for Office 2013. The path also depends on whether Office itself is 32-bit or 64-bit, not only on the Windows architecture.

Open Command Prompt as administrator
- On Windows 10 or Windows 8.1, select Start, type Command Prompt, right-click the result, and select Run as administrator.
- On Windows 7, open Start, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one.
Run the Office product-key status command
Choose the command matching your Office version and installation architecture. Paste it into the elevated Command Prompt window and press Enter.
Office 2019 or Office 2016
32-bit Office on 32-bit Windows:
cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus
32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows:

Read the result
A successful command reports Office licensing details, including the last five characters of the installed product key. Those characters can help distinguish keys used on the same computer, but they are not enough to reinstall Office or activate it on another PC.

The /dstatus command only reports licensing information; it does not modify Office, remove the license, or expose the complete key.
Find the account linked to Microsoft 365 or Office
- Open Word or Excel.
- Select File → Account.
- Under the product name, find the email address after Belongs to.
- Sign in to Microsoft’s account and subscriptions area with that email address to manage or reinstall the license.
Microsoft’s current guidance is to use the associated account for Microsoft 365 and most Office 2024, Office 2021, and Office 2019 installations. Most of those newer Office versions do not include a product key for normal activation.
What to do when the command fails
“Input Error: Can not find script file…”
This means the command path does not point to an existing OSPP.VBS file. Common causes include selecting the wrong Office version or architecture, or using a different installation path. Microsoft says trying the wrong status-command path does not harm the installation; check the matching path above and confirm where the script is installed.
Newer Microsoft 365, Office 2024, and Office 2021 Click-to-Run installations may use a path containing root\Office16, such as:

In File Explorer, check the relevant Office installation folder for OSPP.VBS or search within that folder for the filename. The path examples above are folder locations; use the actual script path if you run the command.
Office 2013 commands appear inconsistent
Microsoft’s command table lists Office15 for Office 2013 64-bit Office on 64-bit Windows with /dstatus and /inpkey, but prints Office16 for /unpkey. Check which folder actually contains OSPP.VBS before using a key-management command rather than blindly changing the path.
Commands for changing or removing an installed key
The script can remove an installed key or add a replacement key, but these commands do not reveal the original complete key:
cscript "PATH_TO_OSPP.VBS" /unpkey:XXXXXcscript "PATH_TO_OSPP.VBS" /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Replace PATH_TO_OSPP.VBS with the actual script path. For /unpkey, replace XXXXX with the final five characters reported by /dstatus. For /inpkey, replace the complete placeholder with a valid unused product key. Do not run these commands just to find a key: /unpkey removes the matching installed license, and /inpkey installs a different one.

Special cases when you have a product key
- Already used: “This product key has already been used” generally means it was redeemed and associated with a Microsoft account. Sign in with that account rather than trying to redeem it again.
- Invalid key: “This product cannot be activated because the product key is not valid” means Microsoft has blocked the key. If it was purchased separately from the software, contact the seller and request a refund.
- Different key in your account: A key shown under Services & subscriptions may differ from the key printed on a product-key card or receipt. Microsoft says this is normal because they are different types of keys.
- Work or volume-license Office: If your employer supplied Office Professional Plus, contact your organization’s administrator for help with the volume license.
