You can find potential AI-developed cancer drugs by searching both the National Cancer Institute (NCI) trial search and ClinicalTrials.gov, then verifying the protocol and asking the sponsor exactly how artificial intelligence was used. Start with a precise record of the patient’s cancer, stage, prior treatment, biomarkers, health, and travel limits. Search with the disease, drug or intervention, sponsor, and terms such as AI-designed, AI-discovered, machine learning, and generative chemistry. A listing is not proof that AI created the medicine, that the trial is recruiting, or that the treatment is suitable. The treating oncologist and study team must make those decisions.
What does it mean for a cancer drug or trial to be developed with AI?
“AI-developed” describes a development step, not a guarantee about a medicine’s effectiveness, approval, safety, or eligibility. Artificial intelligence may have been used to identify a biological target, design or rank molecules, select biomarkers, optimize a dose, analyze data, or support another part of research. It may instead be used only for imaging, diagnosis, recruitment, manufacturing, or statistical analysis while the drug itself was developed conventionally.
Ask the sponsor or investigator to identify the exact role, the named technology or developer, when it was used, and which study or publication documents it. NCI describes AI as active across the cancer-research spectrum and lists programs such as Informatics Technology for Cancer Research, the Cancer Systems Biology Consortium, Small Business Innovation Research, Smart Health and Biomedical Research in the Era of Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Data Science, and Precision Medicine with AI: Integrating Imaging with Multimodal Data. Those programs show broad research activity; they do not certify a particular medicine as AI-developed.

Do not post identifiable medical records in a public forum while searching. Use the profile to ask your oncology team whether a trial’s requirements can be met; the registry cannot make that determination for you.
How do I search the National Cancer Institute trial database?
Use NCI’s cancer clinical-trial search as the first structured pass. NCI says a protocol summary should explain the trial’s goal, treatments, and locations, and recommends starting with a doctor or another member of the health-care team. Its Cancer Information Service can also provide a tailored search that you can discuss with your doctor; NCI warns that search results do not replace medical advice.
- Open the NCI cancer clinical-trials search and enter the cancer type or organ. Add the subtype when the search offers that field.
- Add a drug, treatment, or disease keyword if you have one. If no candidate is known, leave the drug field open and use AI-related terms in the keyword field.
- Filter by trial phase, trial type, lead organization, and location only after seeing how many records the broad search returns. An overly narrow first search can hide a relevant study using different terminology.
- Open each plausible record and save its protocol summary. Record the study identifier, title, phase, recruitment status, intervention, comparator, locations, sponsor, and contact details.
- Read the eligibility section against the patient profile. A cancer-type match alone is not enough; stage, previous treatment, biomarkers, laboratory values, and health status can exclude a candidate.
Use search variants such as artificial intelligence, AI-designed, AI-discovered, machine learning, generative chemistry, and the suspected sponsor or compound name. Try the disease and the intervention separately because a record may describe the AI work in the sponsor or intervention text rather than the title.
How do I search ClinicalTrials.gov for AI-related cancer studies?
Repeat the search on ClinicalTrials.gov because it contains pharmaceutical and biotechnology studies that may not appear on NCI’s list. The registry is maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, but the sponsor or investigator submits the study information and is responsible for its safety, scientific content, and accuracy. Treat an AI label in a record as a claim to verify, not as independent certification.
- Search the disease or cancer subtype first, then add an intervention, sponsor, location, or recruiting filter.
- Run separate keyword searches for
artificial intelligence,AI,machine learning, deep learning,AI-designed,AI-discovered, andgenerative chemistry. Registry wording is inconsistent, so one query is not sufficient. - Search the suspected drug, platform, or sponsor without the word AI. A trial may use an AI-designed molecule but omit AI from its title and summary.
- Open the full record rather than relying on the search snippet. Check the recruitment status date, study phase, intervention model, primary purpose, eligibility, sites, sponsor, collaborators, and contact people.
- Write down the last update date. A record marked recruiting can change, and a site may have filled its places even while the overall study remains open.
ClinicalTrials.gov can contain errors or outdated entries because the responsible sponsor or investigator supplies the information. Confirm important details with the listed study contact and the treating clinician before making travel or treatment decisions.

Where else can I find trials that a registry search misses?
No single list contains every clinical trial because sponsors and institutions publish studies in different places. After searching NCI and ClinicalTrials.gov, check the trial pages of NCI-designated cancer centers, academic hospitals, the sponsor’s official site, and relevant disease-advocacy organizations. Use the same study identifier and title to reconcile duplicate listings.
- Cancer-center pages: may show local screening contacts, opening dates, or site-specific slots that are not obvious in a national search.
- Academic-hospital pages: can describe investigator-initiated studies and provide a coordinator who handles local eligibility screening.
- Company trial pages: may explain the investigational product and list a medical-information contact, but the registry record remains the place to check the formal protocol fields.
- Advocacy listings: can improve search terms for rare subtypes and identify studies organized around a biomarker rather than an organ.
Do not assume that a page showing a study means the local site is open. Ask whether that site is accepting participants now, whether screening slots remain, and whether the AI-derived intervention is actually administered to participants.
How can I verify that AI was used to develop the drug?
Verification requires separating the AI claim from the clinical-trial claim. A study can be genuine and recruiting while the AI contribution is limited to a supporting process. Ask for a specific, documented description.
Questions for the sponsor or investigator
- Was AI used for target discovery, molecule generation or ranking, biomarker selection, dose optimization, toxicity prediction, or another step?
- What model, platform, or developer was used, and during which stage of development?
- Did the model generate the candidate molecule, select it from existing compounds, or merely analyze data about it?
- What study identifier, protocol section, regulatory filing, publication, or presentation describes the AI contribution?
- Is the AI-derived intervention administered to participants, or is AI used only for imaging, diagnosis, recruitment, manufacturing, or analysis?
- What evidence supports the intervention’s mechanism, dose, and safety independently of the AI label?
Record the answer, the person who supplied it, the date, the named technology, and the study identifier. “AI-powered” without a defined development step is marketing language rather than a useful scientific description. No AI label by itself establishes clinical benefit or regulatory approval.
What should I check in a trial protocol before contacting the site?
Read the protocol record as a treatment decision document, not as a headline. The objective, intervention, phase, eligibility, schedule, risks, and contacts determine whether a study is worth a screening call.

| Protocol item | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Study objective | Whether it tests safety, dose, pharmacokinetics, efficacy, a biomarker strategy, or another question | A first-in-human dose study answers a different question from a comparative treatment study |
| Phase | Phase 1, 1/2, 2, 3, or another designation | Phase affects the evidence available, monitoring burden, and typical uncertainty |
| Intervention and comparator | Drug name or code, dose schedule, combinations, placebo, standard treatment, or no comparator | Shows what the participant would actually receive |
| Eligibility | Cancer type, stage, biomarker, prior therapies, washout periods, laboratory limits, organ function, and performance status | Determines whether screening is realistic |
| Recruitment status | Overall status, site-specific status, and the date of the last update | Prevents relying on an old or location-specific listing |
| Locations | Open sites, visit frequency, central testing requirements, and travel expectations | Determines practical feasibility and total burden |

| Sponsor and contacts | Responsible organization, principal investigator, coordinator, telephone number, and email | Provides a route to confirm current openings and ask technical questions |
Save the complete record as a PDF or note its update date. When the summary and detailed eligibility section appear to conflict, ask the coordinator which requirement controls screening.

How should I compare two possible AI-related trials?
Compare trials on clinical fit and evidence, not on which listing uses the most impressive AI vocabulary. A structured worksheet makes hidden trade-offs visible.
| Comparison axis | Trial A | Trial B |
|---|---|---|
| AI role and supporting evidence | Record the claimed step, named technology, and document | Record the claimed step, named technology, and document |
| Cancer and biomarker match | Diagnosis, stage, mutation or other required marker | Diagnosis, stage, mutation or other required marker |
| Phase and objective | Safety, dose, activity, comparison, or other purpose | Safety, dose, activity, comparison, or other purpose |
| Intervention and comparator | Drug, combination, schedule, and control | Drug, combination, schedule, and control |
| Prior-treatment requirements | Required, allowed, or excluded treatments and washout periods | Required, allowed, or excluded treatments and washout periods |
| Recruitment and site | Current status, open location, and contact confirmation | Current status, open location, and contact confirmation |
| Visit burden | Screening, dosing, scans, laboratory tests, and travel | Screening, dosing, scans, laboratory tests, and travel |
| Risks and alternatives | Known risks in the consent materials and available standard options | Known risks in the consent materials and available standard options |
| What participants receive | Whether the AI-derived intervention is administered or AI supports another process | Whether the AI-derived intervention is administered or AI supports another process |
A trial with a less novel-sounding description may be the better match if its biomarker, phase, location, and prior-treatment rules fit. The study team can explain risks and alternatives; a registry comparison cannot replace that conversation.
What questions should I ask the trial coordinator?
Use the first call to confirm availability and uncover requirements that are easy to miss in a public record. Have the study identifier and the patient’s treatment history ready.
- Is the specific location recruiting now, and are screening appointments available?
- Does the study administer the AI-derived drug, or is AI used only in a supporting research activity?
- Which pathology report, biomarker assay, or imaging test is accepted?
- What treatments must have been tried, and how long must a patient wait after the last treatment?
- Which laboratory, heart, liver, kidney, infection, or performance-status tests commonly prevent enrollment?
- How often are visits, scans, infusions, blood draws, biopsies, or overnight stays required?
- What costs are covered by the sponsor, and what routine-care or travel costs may remain?
- What happens if the disease progresses, a serious side effect occurs, or the study closes?
- Can the coordinator send the current consent form and screening checklist to the treating oncologist?
Do not stop prescribed treatment or travel for screening based only on an online description. Let the oncologist coordinate records and determine whether an evaluation is medically appropriate.

How does my oncologist help decide whether an AI-related trial is appropriate?
The treating clinician interprets the protocol in the context of the patient’s disease and available care. NCI’s guidance is to begin with the health-care team, and its Cancer Information Service can help prepare a tailored search for discussion with that team.
Bring the saved protocol, study identifier, eligibility checklist, AI-role explanation, and contact details to the appointment. Ask the oncologist to compare the trial with standard treatment, other trials, supportive care, and the patient’s goals. The clinician can also identify contraindications, arrange pathology review, estimate the burden of travel and monitoring, and explain what is known and unknown about the investigational intervention.
The investigator and the study site make the formal eligibility decision after screening. A search result, an AI claim, or a preliminary telephone conversation cannot enroll a patient.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I access an experimental AI-developed cancer drug outside a trial?
For an investigational cancer medicine, a clinical trial is the usual and preferred access route. NCI calls it the most common and preferred way to access an experimental drug. Expanded access and right-to-try are separate, exceptional pathways with medical, sponsor, and regulatory conditions; they are not ordinary purchasing options.
- Clinical trial: the drug is supplied under a defined protocol with eligibility rules, monitoring, consent, and a research objective.
- Expanded access: may be considered when a patient has a serious condition, lacks a satisfactory alternative, and cannot access a suitable trial, subject to physician, sponsor, and regulatory requirements.
- Right-to-try: has its own statutory and regulatory conditions and does not guarantee that a sponsor will provide the medicine or that a patient qualifies.
Ask the oncologist and sponsor whether any access pathway exists and what evidence, approvals, costs, monitoring, and liabilities apply. Do not buy an unapproved cancer drug from an online seller; the identity, storage, dose, and sterility may be uncertain, and such a product is outside the protections of the trial process.

What common search mistakes can I avoid?
Most errors come from treating a keyword, a status label, or an AI marketing phrase as a clinical conclusion.
| Mistake | What goes wrong | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Searching only one registry | A sponsor or institution’s study may not appear in that database | Search both NCI and ClinicalTrials.gov, then check center, company, and advocacy listings |
| Using only “AI cancer drug” | Records use different scientific and commercial terminology | Run disease, intervention, sponsor, and multiple AI-related searches separately |
| Assuming AI means molecule design | AI may support imaging, diagnosis, recruitment, manufacturing, or analysis | Ask which development step used AI and request documentation |
| Trusting “Recruiting” without checking | The site may be closed, full, or outdated | Check the update date and confirm with the local coordinator |
| Ignoring biomarkers and prior treatment | A broad cancer-type match can still fail screening | Compare every eligibility criterion with the medical profile |
| Confusing research novelty with benefit | An early study may not provide evidence of effectiveness | Read the phase and objective and discuss expected uncertainty with the oncologist |
| Planning treatment from a registry page | Registry summaries cannot assess personal risk or alternatives | Use the record to prepare questions for the treating team and investigator |
What is a practical checklist for finding an AI-developed cancer trial?
Use this sequence each time you investigate a candidate.
- Write the cancer type, stage, biomarkers, previous and current treatments, age, medical conditions, current health, and travel limits.
- Search NCI by disease, intervention, keywords, phase, location, lead organization, and trial type as appropriate.
- Search ClinicalTrials.gov by disease, intervention, sponsor, location, and several AI-related phrases.
- Check NCI-designated centers, academic hospitals, sponsor pages, and advocacy listings for additional records.
- Save each plausible protocol and record its identifier, objective, phase, intervention, comparator, eligibility, status, sites, sponsor, and contacts.
- Ask the sponsor to define the AI contribution and identify the technology and supporting document.
- Confirm that the AI-derived intervention is given to participants rather than used only in a supporting process.
- Call the site to verify local recruitment, screening availability, tests, visit schedule, costs, and travel requirements.
- Review the options with the treating oncologist, including standard care, other trials, risks, alternatives, and treatment goals.
- Use expanded access or right-to-try discussions only when the clinician and sponsor confirm that the separate requirements can be met.
This method finds more relevant records while keeping the crucial distinction between an AI claim and evidence that a particular investigational treatment is appropriate for one patient.

Can an AI-developed cancer drug be approved for routine treatment?
AI involvement does not determine approval status. Check the medicine’s regulatory status for the relevant country and indication, and ask the oncologist whether the specific product is approved, investigational, or available only through a protocol.
What if a trial is listed as recruiting but the study site does not respond?
Try the alternate contact in the full registry record and contact the institution’s clinical-trials office. Keep a dated record of calls and emails, and do not assume silence means a place is available.
Does joining an AI-related trial guarantee access to the AI-designed drug?
Not necessarily. Some studies randomize participants to a comparator, include dose-escalation cohorts, or use AI only for a supporting research task; the consent form explains what each participant may receive.
How can I protect my privacy while looking for a trial online?
Use de-identified notes for public searches and share medical records only with the treating team or verified trial contacts. Confirm that emails and telephone numbers come from the official registry or institution before sending documents.
