To find confirmed exoplanets, start with NASA’s Exoplanet Catalog, where you can browse planets and filter by discovery method or facility. Use the NASA Exoplanet Archive for confirmed targets and system parameters, then follow a record’s cited paper or discovery announcement to see what evidence supports its status. A NASA listing is a useful starting point—not a substitute for checking whether a reported signal is a candidate, confirmed planet, or validated planet.
Where to search for exoplanets NASA has discovered
Start with NASA’s Exoplanet Catalog
The NASA Exoplanet Catalog is the browseable, continuously updated resource for confirmed exoplanets. You can explore records and filter by discovery method, planet type, spacecraft, observatory, or other discovery facility. Because the catalog changes as records are added or updated, use its live total rather than relying on an undated count.
“NASA-listed” is often the most accurate wording: NASA resources catalogue planets discovered by teams and facilities that may include non-NASA institutions.
Use the NASA Exoplanet Archive for system data
The NASA Exoplanet Archive provides confirmed planet targets and system parameters. NASA’s Exoplanet Watch resources point readers to the archive for confirmed planets visible with a telescope. Treat an archive entry as a starting record; for the basis of a discovery or status, open its cited research paper or the relevant announcement.

How to check whether a planet is confirmed
- Find the object in the NASA catalog or archive. Note the status and the record’s linked references rather than relying on a headline or an isolated claim that a planet has been “found.”
- Read the cited discovery paper or announcement. Identify the observed signal, the method used, and what follow-up observations were made.
- Check how the team ruled out alternatives. Look for evidence addressing plausible false positives, such as another star in the system, a brown dwarf, dust, or an instrumental or data artifact.
- Keep the status term precise. A candidate is a signal under investigation; confirmation and validation have distinct meanings in NASA’s public guide.
NASA’s guide describes detection by two different techniques as the standard route to confirmation. It uses “validated” for cases where separate telescopes using the same method and careful scrutiny support greater than 99 percent confidence that the object is a planet. Those terms should not be collapsed: not every confirmed planet is necessarily observed by two telescopes, and the guide’s validation description is not simply another word for confirmation. See NASA’s 10-step guide to confirming a planet.
What the main detection methods observe
Many exoplanets are detected indirectly: astronomers measure an effect on a star or its light rather than taking a conventional photograph of the planet. NASA describes the following methods in its overview, How We Find and Characterize.

| Method | Signal observed | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Transit | A small, repeating dip in a star’s brightness as a planet crosses in front of it from our viewpoint. | The system must have a favorable alignment for a transit to be visible. The dip can help estimate the planet’s size, but a brightness change alone does not settle its status. |
| Radial velocity | Shifts in the star’s spectrum as the star moves toward and away from Earth under a planet’s gravitational pull. | The method measures stellar motion, not a direct image of the planet; it can help determine a planet’s mass. |
| Gravitational microlensing | A lensing event in which gravity changes the observed light from a background source. | It is a different kind of signal from a repeating transit or a measured stellar spectral shift; follow-up must be suited to the particular event and alternatives. |
| Direct imaging | Light from a planet separated from the much brighter light of its star. | It is distinct from indirect measurements of a star’s brightness dip or motion; a planet-like source still needs appropriate scrutiny. |
Why a candidate can turn out not to be a planet
A candidate is a promising signal, not a final verdict. A second star, an eclipsing binary, a brown dwarf, dust, or a blended source of light can imitate or complicate a planet signal. Data or instrument artifacts can also create apparent signals. The right check depends on which alternative could explain the observation; there is no single checklist that applies to every object.
NASA’s technical report on planet confirmation and exclusion of astrophysical false positives discusses follow-up spectroscopy, photometry, imaging, and radial-velocity observations. For an eclipsing-binary possibility, the report explains that multi-epoch radial velocity can determine directly whether the secondary object has stellar mass. In the case it describes, at least two observations near opposite quadrature are required. That is a case-specific example, not a universal minimum for every candidate.

How to interpret NASA’s confirmed-planet count
Counts are time-sensitive. NASA reported that the official number of confirmed exoplanets reached 6,000 in September 2025 in 30 Years of Exoplanets. That is a dated milestone, not a live 2026 total; consult the continuously updated catalog for the current count.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Optional: explore transit data yourself
NASA’s Exoplanet Watch resources include educational material and instructions for using its EXOTIC data-reduction tool with sample transit data to produce a light curve and measure transit depth and mid-transit time. They also link to target lists and observation-planning resources. This can help you learn how transit observations are analyzed, but an amateur observation or software run does not by itself independently confirm a newly reported planet.
