To open Apple Music’s hidden iPod, use a web browser—not the Music app—and visit a deliberately nonexistent Apple Music address such as music.apple.com/macrumors. The resulting “Page Not Found” page can display a working virtual first-generation iPod. You can turn its click wheel to browse playlists, artists, songs and settings, play short song previews, and launch a built-in Brick-style game. The feature was reported on October 23, 2026, the 25th anniversary of Apple’s original iPod announcement. It is a website Easter egg rather than a permanent product feature, so the URL, controls and availability may change.

What is Apple Music’s hidden iPod?

It is an interactive webpage that recreates the look and basic controls of the first-generation iPod. Instead of opening a normal catalog page, Apple Music renders the virtual player beside a “Page Not Found” message and the prompt “Give this a spin instead.” The player responds to wheel and button input, so it is more than a static illustration.

Reports from October 23, 2026, place the launch on the 25th anniversary of Apple announcing the original iPod on October 23, 2001. The date gives the Easter egg its retro context: Apple is echoing the small monochrome player, click wheel and menu hierarchy that defined the first iPod generation.

Apple has not published a formal how-to or promised that the Easter egg will remain online. Treat it as a time-sensitive web experiment: if one address stops working, another path or a different browser may behave differently. The feature is also separate from the ordinary Apple Music catalog interface. It is not a new hardware product, a downloadable app or a replacement for the standard player.

How do I open the hidden iPod in a browser?

Type an invalid path directly after music.apple.com, then stay on the resulting page in your browser. The most widely reported working example is music.apple.com/macrumors; music.apple.com/ipod has also been reported to work, although the surrounding message can differ.

  1. Open a current desktop or mobile browser. Use the browser itself, not a bookmark that hands the address to the native Music app.
  2. Enter the address manually. Try https://music.apple.com/macrumors. If it does not show the player, try https://music.apple.com/ipod.
  3. Wait for the error page to finish loading. The expected result is a virtual iPod next to “Page Not Found,” with the invitation “Give this a spin instead.”
  4. Keep that tab in the browser. The Easter egg is part of the web experience. Switching to the installed Music app removes the page you need.

The path is intentionally nonexistent, so a normal error response is part of the expected sequence. Do not assume that “Page Not Found” means the attempt failed. Look for the iPod illustration and its interactive wheel. The page wording may differ between paths, but the virtual player is the useful indicator.

What should I do if a link keeps opening the Music app?

Paste the address into the browser’s address bar instead of tapping a link that has been associated with the app. On a Mac, MacRumors recommends holding Command while clicking the link so it opens in a browser tab. On an iPhone or iPad, press and hold the link and choose the option to open it in the browser. If the operating system still intercepts it, copy the full address, open Safari or another browser manually, and paste it there.

If you are sharing the address with someone else, explain that it must be loaded as a web URL. A tap from a message, social post or search result may invoke an installed Music app before the browser receives the request. Manually entering the full HTTPS address avoids that handoff in most cases. Once the page is visible, do not use the app’s back-and-forth links to continue; leave the tab open and interact with the on-page controls.

How do I use the virtual click wheel?

Move around the wheel to highlight an item, press the center button to select it, and use Menu to move back. A mouse or trackpad works on a computer, while a finger works on a touchscreen.

Device How to move through menus How to select or go back
Mouse or trackpad Click and drag around the circular wheel. Click the center button to select; click Menu to return.
Touchscreen Touch and move around the wheel area. Tap the center button to select; tap Menu to return.
Desktop keyboard Arrow-key navigation has been reported, but behavior can vary by browser. Enter has been reported as a selection key; use the on-screen controls if it does not respond.

The wheel is directional rather than a conventional scroll bar. Start with a small drag or circular touch, watch which menu item highlights, and adjust your movement until the selection moves predictably. The center button acts as the confirmation control; clicking the wheel itself does not necessarily choose the highlighted row.

There is no need to search for a separate play button before browsing. The interface follows the original iPod idea: highlight a menu item, confirm with the center button, and use Menu to move one level upward. If a touch gesture scrolls the whole webpage instead of rotating the wheel, place your finger directly on the wheel graphic and try a shorter movement. On a computer, dragging around the circumference is more reliable than clicking random points in the middle.

Keyboard support is the least certain input option. Arrow keys and Enter have been reported on desktop, but browser behavior can vary. If a key press moves the page, does nothing or changes the browser focus, return to the on-screen wheel and buttons. Pointer and touch controls are the safer baseline for this Easter egg.

How do I browse playlists, artists, songs and settings?

From the main menu, rotate or drag the wheel until the category you want is highlighted. The reported menu categories are Playlists, Artists, Songs and Settings. The categories are navigation points inside the miniature interface, not a promise that the full Apple Music library has been reproduced.

Playlists

Select Playlists with the center button, then move through the listed entries. Use Menu whenever you want to return to the previous level instead of repeatedly dragging the wheel in the opposite direction. If a playlist appears but a particular title does not play, that reflects the preview-oriented nature of the page rather than a problem with your Apple Music account.

Artists

Choose Artists to view the artist list exposed by the page. Highlight an artist, press the center button, and continue into the available songs. The page is a preview interface, so the list is not a guarantee that every Apple Music track or artist is represented. Treat the displayed names as the content made available by the Easter egg at that moment.

Songs

Songs provides the quickest route to an available track preview. Highlight a title and press the center button. If nothing plays, confirm that the page is still open in the browser and try another title; availability can differ from one track to another. A song ending after a short excerpt is normal and does not mean that the page skipped the rest of a full track.

Settings

Open Settings for the menu that contains About. About is also the route to the hidden game described below. Because the game shortcut is a hold rather than an ordinary menu selection, make sure About is actually highlighted and displayed before pressing and holding the center button.

Can I listen to full songs through the hidden iPod?

No. The player is reported to stream previews, not complete tracks. Many previews are described as lasting up to 90 seconds, while some songs provide a shorter excerpt, so there is no single guaranteed duration.

Press the center button on a song to start its available preview. A short playback window is expected and does not indicate that the page has loaded the full Apple Music catalog. If a track ends quickly, that is consistent with the reported preview behavior rather than a buffering failure. The maximum commonly described length is 90 seconds, not a promise that every preview reaches that limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preview length can also differ for shorter songs or for titles whose available clip is shorter. Do not use the Easter egg to test whether a subscription is active, to build a permanent playlist or to listen offline. The reports describe a lightweight web novelty, not the account, library and playback system found in the regular Apple Music site or app.

The Easter egg also does not promise that every song, album or playlist will be playable. Catalog results, preview length and playback can vary by track, browser and region. Use the regular Apple Music website or app when you need complete songs and the normal account, library or subscription features.

How do I launch the hidden Brick game?

Open Settings, choose About, then hold the virtual center button for a few seconds. Reports identify the result as Brick, a Breakout-style game.

  1. From the main menu, move to Settings and press the center button.
  2. Highlight About and press the center button again.
  3. Press and hold the center button for several seconds rather than releasing it immediately.
  4. When the game appears, use the wheel or the available pointer controls to play. If the hold does nothing, repeat it while the About screen is fully visible.

The hold is deliberately different from a normal selection click. A quick tap merely opens or confirms the About item; the game requires sustained pressure on the virtual center button. On a touchscreen, keep your finger down for the full hold instead of tapping repeatedly. On a trackpad or mouse, press and hold the center control itself, not the surrounding wheel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game shortcut is a hidden interaction, not a separate download. Reloading the page can reset it, so finish the session before closing the tab if you want to keep playing. If the game does not appear, return to the main menu, reopen Settings and About, and try the hold again after the About screen has finished rendering.

Why does the Apple Music link open the app instead?

Operating systems commonly associate music.apple.com links with the installed Music app. That handoff is useful for ordinary music links but bypasses the web page that contains the Easter egg. The distinction is about where the URL is rendered, not about whether the device has Apple Music installed.

  • On macOS: hold Command while clicking a link, or copy the address and paste it into Safari or another browser.
  • On iPhone or iPad: press and hold the link, choose the browser-opening command, or paste the address into Safari’s address bar.
  • On any device: type the address yourself and verify that the browser’s address bar remains visible after loading.

If the app has already opened, switch back to the browser and enter the address there. Do not search for the phrase inside the Music app; the trigger is the web URL and its nonexistent path. Similarly, opening an ordinary album or artist link first does not expose the Easter egg. Start with the invalid path in a browser tab.

What should I check if the player does not appear?

Start with the exact URL and browser context, then test the alternate path. Reports differ on which path works in a given environment, and desktop keyboard support is less consistent than pointer or touch input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the path: try both /macrumors and /ipod after music.apple.com.
  • Confirm the app distinction: the page must be displayed in a browser tab, not inside the native Music app.
  • Check the full address: include https:// if you are pasting it, and make sure the path follows music.apple.com exactly.
  • Try pointer input: use a mouse, trackpad or touchscreen before troubleshooting keyboard commands.
  • Reload once: a failed or partially loaded page can leave the wheel unresponsive.
  • Try another browser: the reports do not establish identical behavior across every browser, device or region.
  • Expect temporary outages: Apple has not guaranteed that this Easter egg will remain available.

The exact error-page wording can also vary. Seeing a different message around the player does not by itself mean that you reached the wrong feature; the /ipod report specifically notes a different surrounding message. The important combination is a browser-rendered error page and an interactive virtual iPod.

If the page loads but a menu item will not highlight, stop dragging for a moment and try a smaller circular motion. If a song will not start, test a second title before concluding that playback is broken. If the game will not launch, verify that you are holding the center button on About rather than simply selecting the menu row. These checks separate input problems from changes Apple may have made to the Easter egg.

Does the Easter egg need an iPod or special hardware?

No physical iPod is needed. The wheel, center button, Menu control and game are rendered in the browser, so a computer or touchscreen device is enough.

A real iPod, accessory or repair part cannot make the webpage load or improve the preview catalog. The useful choices are simply the browser and input method you already have: mouse or trackpad, touchscreen, or the reported desktop keyboard controls. Buying vintage hardware is therefore unrelated to the task of opening this web feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The page is designed as a visual and interactive callback to the first-generation device, not as an emulator that connects to a physical iPod. Nothing in the reported instructions requires pairing, a cable, an Apple accessory or a special operating system version.

What does Apple’s web-player privacy notice mean here?

The general Apple Music web-player privacy notice says the web player may use cookies or similar local storage. In the cases described by that notice, one-day identifiers may be used, and disabling cookies or related storage can affect functions such as staying signed in.

That notice is general web-player policy, not documentation written specifically for the hidden iPod. The Easter egg itself does not come with a separate published privacy promise, so browser privacy settings can change how the surrounding web player behaves even when the visual player still loads.

For this reason, a privacy setting that blocks cookies is not proof that the Easter egg has disappeared. It may instead affect sign-in persistence or other ordinary web-player functions. Conversely, allowing storage does not guarantee that the Easter egg will work: the URL, browser implementation and Apple’s server-side page can still change independently.

How long will the hidden iPod remain available?

There is no stated end date. The feature was reported on October 23, 2026, but Apple has not been reported to promise permanence, universal regional availability or identical behavior in every browser.

Because it is triggered by a nonexistent URL, Apple can change the route, replace the page, alter the controls or remove the experience without changing the main Apple Music service. Save the working address only as a convenience, not as a guarantee that it will continue to work.

  • iOS 7 features - Siri, Apple Designed Maps, Integrated Facebook, Shared Photo Streams, Passbook & more

The anniversary timing explains why the page appeared, but it does not establish a scheduled expiration or a permanent archive. If you want to show someone the feature, send both the URL and the instruction to open it in a browser. That avoids the most common failure mode—having the recipient’s device redirect the address to the Music app.

Is a subscription required?

The reported instructions describe a browser Easter egg and do not establish an Apple Music subscription or hardware purchase requirement. They also do not establish that signing in is necessary to reveal the virtual player. Access conditions can change with Apple’s web implementation, so do not treat the absence of a sign-in prompt as a permanent policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A subscription is still relevant to the ordinary Apple Music service, where account, library and full-track playback features are separate from this novelty page. The hidden iPod should be understood as a limited interactive experience, not as a way to bypass normal access rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the hidden iPod require an Apple Music subscription?

The reports describe a browser Easter egg and do not establish a subscription or purchase requirement. They also do not say that signing in is necessary to reach the page, so treat access requirements as subject to change rather than assuming a paid plan is needed.

Is the hidden iPod an officially documented Apple feature?

Apple has not published an official how-to for the Easter egg in the reported coverage. Operational details come from technology reports, which is why the URL and controls should be treated as changeable.

Why might the /ipod page show different text from the /macrumors page?

Both paths have been reported as triggers, but the surrounding error-page message is not identical in every report. The virtual player is the important signal; wording around it may depend on the route or the version of the page served.

Can browser privacy settings affect the Apple Music page?

Apple’s general web-player notice says cookies or similar local storage can be used, including one-day identifiers in specified cases. Blocking that storage may affect web-player functions such as staying signed in, although the notice is not specific documentation for the iPod Easter egg.

How long is each song preview?

Many reported previews run for up to 90 seconds, while some tracks have shorter excerpts. The hidden player does not promise a uniform duration or complete songs.

Can I play the Brick game without a physical iPod?

Yes. The game is launched inside the browser by opening Settings, choosing About and holding the virtual center button for a few seconds. No physical iPod or accessory is needed.

What if keyboard controls do not work?

Arrow keys and Enter have been reported on desktop, but behavior can vary by browser. Use the on-screen wheel and buttons with a mouse, trackpad or touchscreen instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is this a replacement for the normal Apple Music player?

No. It is a limited web Easter egg with menu navigation and song previews. Use the regular Apple Music website or app for full tracks, account features, library access and subscription functions.

The Bottom Line

Open music.apple.com/macrumors or try music.apple.com/ipod in a browser, not the Music app. Use the virtual wheel and center button to browse, expect previews of up to about 90 seconds rather than full songs, and launch Brick from Settings → About by holding the center button. Because Apple has not promised permanence, the paths and behavior may change.
