Start by identifying the security provider that is actively protecting Windows, then check whether another antivirus is installed. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage providers to see the active provider and its real-time status. Next, remove an unwanted antivirus from Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, from Apps & features in Windows 10, or through Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

Keep one real-time antivirus provider enabled. Uninstalling the active product can briefly leave the PC unprotected, so confirm that Microsoft Defender Antivirus or your chosen replacement is active immediately after the restart. If the computer remains slow, investigate malware, startup programs, low free space, outdated software, and aging hardware instead of repeatedly removing security tools.

Can antivirus software really make a Windows PC slow?

Yes. Real-time antivirus software watches files, processes, downloads, and other system activity. Two products attempting to inspect the same activity can compete for access to files and system resources. Microsoft warns that running more than one antivirus or antispyware program at the same time can decrease performance, make Windows unstable, or cause unexpected restarts.

A single antivirus can also make the computer feel slower temporarily during a scan, a large software update, or the first inspection of many newly created files. That does not prove the program is defective. The useful question is whether the slowdown began after installation or an update, whether two real-time providers are enabled, and whether performance improves after a controlled removal and reboot.

What else can cause the same symptoms?

Windows performance guidance also identifies malware, low disk space, startup applications, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets current demands. A full scan examines many files and can itself increase disk and CPU activity while it runs. Treat antivirus as one possible cause, not an automatic diagnosis.

What you observe More likely explanations to check
Slow startup after installing a second security suite Competing real-time providers or extra startup services
Slowness only while a scan is running Normal scan workload, or malware consuming resources
Pop-ups, browser changes, disabled security settings, or crashes Possible malware; scan before uninstalling protection
Slow performance that remains after removal Low storage, startup apps, updates, malware, or aging hardware

How do I find which antivirus is protecting my PC?

Windows Security shows the provider that Windows currently recognizes for real-time protection. Check this before uninstalling anything; the name in the list may differ from the name you remember downloading.

  1. Open the Start menu and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Under the protection page, select Manage providers.
  4. Record each listed provider and whether its real-time protection is on.

If a non-Microsoft antivirus is installed and turned on, Microsoft Defender Antivirus normally turns off automatically. After that product is removed, Defender should return to active mode when no other real-time provider is present. The provider screen is therefore your confirmation point both before and after removal.

What does “active” mean here?

An active provider is the product Windows is using for real-time protection. A program can still appear in the installed-apps list even when it is not the active provider; remnants, a disabled trial, or an on-demand scanner may be present. Do not remove a program solely because its name appears in a folder or browser extension. Match the installed program with the provider shown in Windows Security.

How do I see every antivirus program installed in Windows?

Use Windows’ supported app-removal views rather than deleting folders. Check both Settings and Control Panel because an older security product may not appear in the newer Settings list.

Windows 11

  1. Select Start > Settings.
  2. Open Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Use the search box and sort options to look for antivirus, internet security, endpoint protection, firewall, VPN-security bundles, or the publisher name shown in Windows Security.
  4. Open the app’s menu and note its exact name and version before choosing to remove it.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then open Apps & features.
  3. Find the security product, select it, and choose Uninstall.

Control Panel alternative

  1. Search for and open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Select the unwanted antivirus and choose Uninstall.

If the program is absent from Settings, Control Panel is the next supported route. Also check for separate entries from the same publisher, such as a security agent, browser protection component, or update service. The publisher’s own uninstall wizard may remove these together; do not guess which service files are safe to delete.

How do I remove a second antivirus without creating a security gap?

Decide which product will remain before you click Uninstall. Microsoft cautions that removing the currently installed internet-security program leaves the PC in an unprotected state until another provider becomes active.

iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit - Electronics, Smartphone, Computer & Tablet Repair Kit
  • The original electronics toolkit: Designed for computer, smartphone, tablet, and gaming repair, backed by thousands of free instructions.
  • Intentional selection: All the tools you need. A 64 precision bit driver set, tweezers, flex extension, opening tools, and anti-static wristband.
  • Secure design: Magnetic case and foam insert ensure secure storage and transportation. Additionally, the inside of the lid serves as a sorting/organization tray.
  • Lifetime Warranty: We'll replace anything that breaks, as long as you own it.
  1. Choose the keeper. Most Windows PCs can use Microsoft Defender Antivirus as the remaining real-time provider, or you can keep one trusted third-party product. Do not plan to keep two real-time engines enabled.
  2. Save any information you need. If the product stores a subscription account, license details, encrypted files, or firewall rules, make sure you know how to restore access before removal.
  3. Close conflicting work. Finish or pause a scan and close the antivirus dashboard. Save documents and close applications so the uninstall can restart services cleanly.
  4. Start the supported uninstall. In Windows 11 use Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps; in Windows 10 use Apps > Apps & features; or use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Select the unwanted product and choose Uninstall.
  5. Complete the publisher’s wizard. Accept only the removal options you understand. Some wizards ask whether to retain settings or submit feedback; those choices do not replace the actual uninstall confirmation.
  6. Restart when prompted. A reboot allows Windows to unload drivers and services that cannot be removed while they are running. Do not assume the job is complete until after the restart.
  7. Check protection immediately. Reopen Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage providers. Confirm that Microsoft Defender or your chosen replacement reports active real-time protection.

Do not intentionally browse, download files, or postpone the verification step while no provider is active. If Windows does not show a replacement provider after reboot, open Windows Update and Windows Security, resolve the status warning, and use another trusted device to obtain help if necessary.

How can I confirm that the old antivirus is actually gone?

Removal has two parts: the app entry disappears, and its protection services no longer control Windows. Check both.

  • In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage providers, the removed product should no longer be the active real-time provider.
  • Microsoft Defender should report active protection if no other provider is installed and enabled.
  • In Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features, the main product entry should be absent.
  • Restart-related warnings, repeated prompts from the old dashboard, or a provider that reappears after reboot indicate an incomplete removal.

Do not infer success solely from a missing desktop shortcut. Security software can install drivers and services that are not represented by a shortcut, which is why the provider page and an installed-apps check are both important.

What should I do if an antivirus will not uninstall?

Use the least destructive recovery path first. Do not delete service folders, drivers, or registry entries manually; doing so can leave Windows unstable and can prevent the publisher’s cleanup process from working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try the other Windows uninstall route

  1. Restart Windows, sign in normally, and try the uninstall again.
  2. If you used Settings first, try Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. If Control Panel failed, try Settings > Apps.
  3. Follow every restart request from the publisher’s wizard before trying another method.

Use Repair or Reset when Windows offers it

In Windows 11, an app may expose Advanced options with Repair or Reset. Repair attempts to fix the app’s registration without removing its data; Reset reinstalls or reinitializes the app’s Windows-managed components. Availability depends on how the product was packaged, so these options may not appear for traditional desktop security suites. After using one, retry the normal uninstall route and reboot.

Run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter

Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter is intended for corrupted uninstall data and removals blocked by damaged installation records. Use it when the product is listed but the uninstall command fails, or when Windows reports that the program cannot be found. Download it only from Microsoft’s official support resources, follow its prompts for uninstalling a program, and restart afterward.

Use the publisher’s official cleanup utility

Some security products do not remove every component through the standard wizard. Microsoft advises consulting the publisher’s website or technical support in that situation. Use only the publisher’s official cleanup utility, follow its documented restart and Safe Mode requirements if any, and verify the provider afterward. Avoid third-party “force uninstall” tools and manual deletion of security-service files.

Should I scan for malware before removing a slow antivirus?

If the PC shows unexplained pop-ups, browser changes, disabled security tools, crashes, or unusual CPU and disk activity, treat malware as a possibility. Malware can consume resources and can also interfere with an uninstall, so removing protection first may make diagnosis harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the scan for the situation

  • Quick scan: Microsoft recommends this as an initial check when you need a focused first pass.
  • Full scan: Use it when infection is suspected and you can tolerate a longer examination of files. The computer may feel slower while the scan runs.
  • Microsoft Defender Offline: Use the offline environment when persistent malware may be hiding while Windows is running. Save work first because the PC restarts.
  • Microsoft Safety Scanner: This is an additional on-demand option for checking a system; obtain a current copy from Microsoft because scanner versions are time-limited.

If a full scan is the only time the PC slows down, let it finish before judging ordinary performance. If Windows Security cannot start, reports that protection is disabled without explanation, or malware keeps returning, disconnect the PC from untrusted networks and seek specialized support rather than repeatedly uninstalling and reinstalling antivirus products.

How do I tell whether removing the antivirus improved performance?

Compare the same tasks before and after the reboot instead of relying on a momentary impression. Record startup time, how quickly common applications open, disk activity while idle, and responsiveness when switching windows. Make the comparison after Windows has finished pending updates and the replacement provider has completed any initial setup.

A practical before-and-after checklist

  • Restart the PC and note the time until the desktop is usable.
  • Open the applications that previously felt slow and compare launch and response behavior.
  • Observe whether disk activity remains high while no scan is running.
  • Check Windows Security for a healthy active provider.
  • Repeat the comparison after the first normal work session, not only immediately after uninstalling.

If the measurements do not improve, reinstalling another antivirus is unlikely to solve the root cause. Continue with Windows’ performance checks: remove unnecessary startup apps, free disk space, install pending updates, scan for malware, and assess whether the hardware is adequate for current workloads.

What are the safest choices when more than one security product is installed?

The safest default is one real-time antivirus provider plus optional on-demand scanners that do not enable a second real-time engine. Use the provider status, not marketing labels or the number of security icons in the notification area, to decide what is active.

Situation Recommended action Reason
Two products both show real-time protection enabled Keep one and uninstall the other using its supported wizard Multiple real-time products can reduce performance or destabilize Windows

What should I check if the PC is still slow after cleanup?

Work through other documented causes in a deliberate order. First check for malware with Windows Security. Then review startup applications and unnecessary background programs, free space on the system drive, install Windows and application updates, and consider whether the computer’s hardware has become inadequate for the software you now run.

Low free space

A nearly full system drive can make updates, temporary files, and ordinary Windows operations less efficient. Remove files you no longer need, empty temporary locations safely, and keep enough free space for updates rather than filling the drive again immediately.

Startup applications

Applications that launch at sign-in can make startup and the first few minutes of use feel slow. Disable only programs you recognize and do not disable security, input, backup, or hardware-management components without checking their purpose.

Outdated software and hardware limits

Install available Windows and application updates, then restart. If the PC is still slow for ordinary tasks, an older processor, limited memory, or a hard disk may be the limiting factor; removing antivirus software cannot overcome a hardware bottleneck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What mistakes should I avoid when removing antivirus software?

  • Removing protection before choosing a replacement: this creates the unprotected interval Microsoft warns about.
  • Running two real-time products “for extra safety”: the result can be lower performance or instability rather than better protection.
  • Deleting folders manually: drivers and services can remain registered, and Windows may become unstable.
  • Assuming a full scan proves the antivirus is at fault: scans are resource-intensive by design, and malware can also cause heavy activity.
  • Using an unofficial cleanup utility: obtain removal tools from the publisher or Microsoft, not from download mirrors or pop-up advertisements.
  • Skipping the reboot and verification: services and drivers may not unload until Windows restarts, and Defender may not become active until then.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Microsoft Defender turn on automatically after I uninstall another antivirus?

Microsoft states that Defender should turn on automatically when a non-Microsoft antivirus is removed and no other provider is present. Still, open Windows Security and check Manage providers after restarting; do not rely on the expected behavior without verifying the status.

Can I keep a second antivirus for manual scans?

You can use an on-demand scanner provided it does not enable a second real-time protection engine. Check its settings and Windows Security’s provider page so only one product controls real-time protection.

Why is my PC slow only during a full antivirus scan?

A full scan reads a large number of files, so elevated disk and CPU activity during the scan is expected. Let it complete, then judge performance while no scan or update is running; persistent slowness needs a broader diagnosis.

What if the antivirus is not listed in Settings or Control Panel?

Restart and check both uninstall locations, then use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter if Windows has damaged uninstall records. If components remain, contact the publisher and use only its official cleanup utility.
