To find a locked ChatGPT conversation, open Projects > Locked chats, authenticate with your account PIN or a supported device-unlock method, then select the conversation. Locked chats are hidden from regular chat history and normal conversation search. Opening one gives temporary access; to return it to ordinary history, use the chat’s ••• menu and choose Unlock chat (or Unlock on iOS).
Where are locked chats in ChatGPT?
Find them in Projects > Locked chats. After you authenticate, the area displays the conversations you have locked and can open. The feature is rolling out gradually, so it may not appear for every account or workspace yet.
Open ChatGPT while signed into the account and workspace where you locked the conversation. If you use more than one account or workspace, check each one: a chat locked in one does not appear in another account’s chat list.

Use the Locked chats area rather than the regular chat list. Authentication is required before the conversation opens.

- Open ChatGPT and select Projects.
- Select Locked chats.
- Enter your account PIN, or authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or device-unlock authentication if that option is supported on your device.
- Select the conversation you want to read.
Opening a chat does not permanently unlock it. It gives you temporary access to the conversation; the chat remains locked unless you explicitly choose to unlock it.
When does temporary access end?
On the web, access is tied to the browser tab or desktop window. It ends if you refresh the page, close that tab or window, or choose Lock now. On iOS and Android, access ends automatically after the app’s idle or background period, or immediately when you choose Lock now. Use Lock now when you want to end access without waiting for the automatic timeout.
Why can’t I find a locked chat in search?
Locked chats do not appear in regular conversation search or the normal chat history. Search for them by browsing Projects > Locked chats instead.
On iOS, Find may be available to search within a locked chat after you have opened it. That is an in-chat search, not a way to locate locked conversations from the regular chat search.

How are archived chats different?
Archiving does not hide a conversation from search in the same way locking does. Archived chats remain searchable and can also be managed at Settings > Data controls > Archived chats. If you cannot find a conversation in Locked chats, check whether it was archived instead.
How do I permanently unlock a conversation?
Unlocking returns the conversation to regular history. It is different from opening the chat temporarily.
- Open the conversation from Projects > Locked chats and authenticate.
- Open the ••• menu in the chat.
- Choose Unlock chat, or Unlock on iOS, then confirm.
The conversation returns to regular history, where it can be found through the usual history and search tools. Search indexing may take time, so allow a short delay if it does not appear immediately. A conversation that began in a project returns to regular history rather than to its original project.

You can reset a forgotten PIN from Settings > Security and login > Account PIN > Reset PIN. Be careful: resetting a forgotten PIN permanently deletes all locked chats, memories stored only inside locked chats, and files or other content protected only by the previous PIN. The deletion cannot be undone, and OpenAI Support cannot recover that content.

Resetting is not the same as changing a PIN you still know. Changing a known PIN keeps the locked chats; use the reset option only if you accept the loss of the content protected by the old PIN.
Why is a chat missing from Locked chats?
First check that you are in the correct OpenAI account and workspace. If the conversation is not locked, it will not appear in the Locked chats area.
- If you think it is an ordinary conversation, search for words from its title or messages and select All when that filter is available.
- If you may have archived it, check Settings > Data controls > Archived chats.
- If the list looks out of date, refresh ChatGPT or sign out and back in.
- If the feature or chat list is unavailable, check OpenAI Status for a service incident.
Deleted chats cannot be restored. If a conversation was deleted rather than locked or archived, it will not be recoverable through the Locked chats area.

Who can use Locked chats, and which conversations can be locked?
OpenAI lists Locked chats for Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu, but availability is rolling out gradually. ChatGPT for Healthcare is excluded. Seeing a plan on the availability list does not guarantee the feature has reached every account or workspace.

Some conversation types cannot be locked. The excluded types include temporary, archived, group, shared-link, scheduled-task, meeting-recording, and background-task chats. Eligibility for project conversations varies by platform. Codex conversations and local Work conversations cannot be locked.

Files uploaded or created inside a locked chat remain protected and can be opened only in that chat while it is locked. Files brought into the conversation from elsewhere retain their existing access rules.
Locking does not add end-to-end encryption, change data-retention rules, change the Improve the model for everyone setting, or erase information ChatGPT remembered before the conversation was locked. It is also not a way to prevent someone with access to the open conversation from copying its contents.
While a chat is locked, it cannot be archived, pinned, moved, or shared. Permanently unlock it first if you need to use one of those actions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can someone copy messages from a locked ChatGPT chat?
Yes. Locking limits access to the conversation, but anyone who can open it can copy its contents. Avoid treating the lock as a way to prevent an authorized viewer from saving or sharing what they can see.
Does locking a chat change whether ChatGPT can use my conversations to improve models?
No. Locking leaves the “Improve the model for everyone” setting unchanged. If you want to review that control, check it separately in your ChatGPT settings.
Can I recover a locked chat after deleting it?
No. Deleted chats cannot be restored. If you are unsure whether a conversation was deleted, first check Locked chats and Archived chats before assuming it is gone.
Will a locked chat stay in its project after I unlock it?
No. A conversation that began in a project returns to regular history when unlocked rather than going back into that project.
