To find a game’s AI disclosure, open its Steam store page and look for the developer’s AI disclosure text. Valve says much of the information developers submit in Steamworks’ Content Survey appears on the store page, but its public documentation does not specify one fixed location that is the same on every page or client.

The disclosure is a developer-provided description of certain AI-generated content—not a guarantee that the whole game was made by AI, a complete independent audit, or a recommendation about whether to buy it. To interpret it, check what content is named, whether it is part of the playable game or other material, and whether it is generated during development or while the game runs.

Where is the AI disclosure on a Steam game page?

Open the game’s Steam store page and look for the developer’s AI disclosure. Valve says much of the disclosure developers submit through the Steamworks Content Survey is included on the store page, so the store page is the first place to check. Valve’s January 10, 2024 announcement about AI content on Steam does not prescribe one fixed position on every page. The layout can vary, so look over the page rather than relying on a specific tab, heading location, or client view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same store page may be viewed in a desktop browser, the Steam client, or a mobile interface. Because Valve does not promise an identical layout in each view, a notice that is easy to see in one client may be presented differently in another. If you cannot find it immediately, read the page’s descriptive sections and look for language about artificial intelligence, AI-generated content, or the developer’s use of generative tools. Do not infer that a disclosure is absent merely because it is not in the location you expected.

The wording is supplied by the developer. Read the statement itself: a short label may tell you that AI was used, while the accompanying explanation—if provided—may clarify what was generated and where it appears. Valve’s public documentation describes the disclosure process, not a uniform format that every developer must use in the same way. One developer may provide a sentence, while another may separate pre-generated and live-generated uses or name individual content types.

What information is Steam’s disclosure designed to cover?

Valve’s generative-AI section concerns content that ships with a game and is consumed by players. That focus matters. A developer can use software containing AI features to work more efficiently, yet that fact alone is not what this particular section is intended to record. The relevant question is whether AI helped create player-facing content that is delivered with the game or generated for the player during play.

Valve’s official Content Survey gives examples including artwork, sound, narrative, and localization. A developer’s statement can also identify user-interface elements, music, voice, story, dialogue, or other content. Code may be included when it forms part of what is shipped and relevant to the survey’s description. These examples are categories, not a promise that every disclosure will list every category or every asset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Content outside the playable game can matter too when the developer identifies it. A statement may distinguish game assets from store-page, community, or promotional material. That distinction prevents a reader from treating an AI-generated marketing image as proof that the game’s art, characters, or dialogue were generated in the same way. Always connect the named category to the place where the developer says it appears.

What does Steam mean by pre-generated AI?

Pre-generated AI content is made with AI tools during development and then shipped with the game for players to consume. The term describes when the content is created, not how much of the game was made with AI and not whether a human later edited or integrated it.

Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey focuses its generative-AI section on content that ships with a game and is consumed by players. Examples include artwork, sound, narrative, and localization. The category may also include code or other content, depending on how it is used and whether it is part of what players consume.

For example, a developer might disclose AI-generated artwork used in the game, AI-assisted localization shipped to players, or generated music included in a soundtrack. A different statement might refer only to promotional images on the store page. Those examples do not establish that every asset, language, song, or line of text was generated by AI; the actual scope depends on what the developer says.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pre-generated material is fixed at the point it is packaged for release, even if a later patch changes it. A disclosure that says “pre-generated” therefore tells you the timing category, but not the volume, percentage, number of files, or degree of human editing. Valve’s public description does not require an item-by-item inventory or a numerical estimate.

What is live-generated AI on Steam?

Live-generated AI content is created while the game is running, rather than being made in advance and shipped as fixed content. A game might generate player-facing dialogue, narrative variations, images, sound, or another form of content during play. The important feature is that generation happens at runtime for the player’s session.

Live generation can make the exact output vary from one play session to another. However, a disclosure that uses this label does not by itself tell you how often generation occurs, whether it needs an internet connection, what model is used, or how long a response takes. Those details are not guaranteed by Valve’s public disclosure description.

Valve says developers using live generation must describe the guardrails they use to prevent the generation of illegal content. Look for an explanation of those controls in the public statement. A notice that mentions guardrails does not necessarily provide enough detail for a player to independently assess how they work, what categories they cover, or how failures are handled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pre-generated and live-generated content are not interchangeable labels. A game can have content made in advance, content generated during play, or both. Read each part of the developer’s wording instead of assuming that one category rules out the other.

Pre-generated versus live-generated: a quick comparison

Question Pre-generated Live-generated
When is content made? During development, before release or packaging. While the game is running.
What does the player receive? Content shipped with the game for consumption. Content produced for the player during play.
Can outputs vary between sessions? The shipped material is generally fixed unless changed by an update. Runtime generation can produce different outputs.
What extra disclosure does Valve require? The developer describes the relevant use. The developer must also describe guardrails against illegal content.
What is not established by the label? It does not reveal a percentage of assets, cost, model, or amount of human editing. It does not reveal model details, frequency, connection requirements, or whether every output is safe.

This comparison explains the timing distinction only. The developer’s own statement remains the authority for the specific content and scope it reports.

How should I interpret the wording?

Read the disclosure as a description of reported use. To understand what it tells you—and what it leaves unclear—use the following sequence.

  1. Identify the content. Look for named categories such as art, user-interface elements, sound, music, voice, story, dialogue, or localization. These are examples of player-consumed content; a disclosure may mention only some of them. If it says “assets,” note that this is broader and less precise than naming portraits, environments, icons, or another defined group.
  2. Check where it appears. Distinguish content in the playable game from store-page, community, or promotional material if the developer identifies that scope. “AI was used” alone may not tell you which of those uses is meant. A store image and an in-game character portrait should not be treated as the same disclosure category without supporting wording.
  3. Check when it is generated. Content generated during development is pre-generated; content created while the game runs is live-generated. If both are mentioned, keep the categories separate when evaluating the statement.
  4. Assess the level of detail. “AI used for assets” is less informative than a statement that names the asset type and explains how it is used. That difference tells you how much the disclosure explains; it does not prove what else is or is not in the game. Specificity is a measure of information, not a quality score.
  5. For live generation, look for guardrails. Valve requires developers to describe safeguards against illegal content for live-generated use. The public wording may not show enough detail to judge the safeguards independently. Treat the presence of a brief assurance and a detailed description as different levels of explanation, without claiming either one proves that a system can never fail.
  6. Separate reported scope from your conclusion. If the developer names one localization workflow, conclude only that the statement covers that workflow. Do not silently expand it to every language. If it names promotional artwork, do not silently expand it to every in-game asset.
  7. Record what is not said. Note whether the statement omits the content type, location, or timing. An omission limits what you can conclude; it is not evidence that the omitted use did not occur.

Valve says efficiency gains from AI-powered development tools are not the focus of this part of the survey. Its documentation states: “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” The relevant distinction is whether AI is used to create content that ships with the game and is consumed by players—not simply whether a developer used an AI tool to work more efficiently.

Does a Steam AI disclosure mean the whole game was made by AI?

No. A disclosure can concern a particular kind of content or a particular use; it does not, by itself, say that the whole game was generated by AI. Look at the developer’s actual wording to determine the scope it reports. A notice about one set of images, a localization pass, or runtime dialogue should not be rewritten as a claim about the game’s entire design, codebase, writing, or art direction.

The disclosure also does not tell you how much human work surrounded the AI output. The public description may identify content and timing without specifying prompts, editing, selection, integration, testing, or the proportion of AI-assisted material. Do not turn an unspecified process into a precise percentage or a claim about the developer’s working methods.

Valve reviews AI-generated output in pre-release review under the same general content and marketing-consistency expectations it applies to other content. Completing the survey does not exempt a game from Steam’s content rules. The disclosure and review process should not be read as a quality rating, a comprehensive independent audit, or Valve’s endorsement of the game.

What does Valve’s review mean?

Valve says AI-generated output is evaluated in pre-release review under the same general expectations for content and consistency in marketing that apply to other material. This means the existence of a disclosure does not create a separate permission category or a waiver of Steam’s rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review is not the same as a public technical audit. The store-page notice is based on information developers submit and the disclosure Valve includes publicly. It does not promise that Valve has independently catalogued every file, tested every runtime response, verified every model claim, or rated the artistic quality of the output.

Use the notice as one piece of information when deciding what you want to play. If your concern is a particular type of content, look for that type in the wording and in the game’s own presentation. If the wording does not answer your question, the responsible conclusion is that the public notice leaves it unresolved.

What if the disclosure is vague, missing, or out of date?

A vague statement limits what you can conclude: it may confirm that the developer reports AI use without identifying the content or its role. Do not treat missing detail as proof that a particular use is absent, and do not treat the lack of a visible statement as proof that no AI was used. Valve’s public materials explain its disclosure process but do not establish that the store page is a complete independent inventory of every development use.

First, check that you are viewing the current store page rather than an old cached page, a search snippet, or a community summary. Then read the developer’s latest wording and compare it with any relevant announcement the developer has made. Keep in mind that community posts can describe what players observed, but they do not replace the official statement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the wording seems outdated, check the current store page and relevant developer announcements for an update. Valve’s Content Survey FAQ says that after a build and store page have been approved for release, some survey answers cannot be edited without first contacting Steam Support. That requirement means a developer may need support assistance before an approved answer can be changed; it does not provide a public, universal revision log.

The public documentation does not describe a universal public change-history system, so you may not be able to compare the current wording with earlier versions. Avoid presenting an old screenshot as the current disclosure unless you can establish when it was captured and whether the store page changed afterward.

Community-curated lists can provide examples of how players identify disclosures, but they are not Valve policy or a substitute for the game’s own store page. For instance, a Steam community curator listing is a community resource, not an official Valve determination. Use it as a lead, then verify the wording on the game’s page.

Questions the disclosure usually cannot answer

  • Which AI model or company was used? Valve’s public survey documentation does not establish that every disclosure names a model or provider.
  • How many assets were generated? The disclosure is not guaranteed to be an item-by-item inventory or a numerical count.
  • What percentage of the game is AI-generated? Valve’s public description does not require a percentage, so do not calculate one from a broad label.
  • How much did the AI work cost? The disclosure framework describes content and generation practices, not a development budget or tool bill.
  • How much editing did people do? Unless the developer says so, the notice does not establish the amount of human review or revision.
  • Will live-generated output always be safe or appropriate? A guardrail description is required for live generation, but the public notice may not provide enough detail to independently assess performance.

A practical reading checklist

When you open a page, work through this short checklist:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that you are on the game’s current official Steam store page.
  2. Find the AI disclosure text, remembering that its position can vary by page and client.
  3. Copy or summarize the developer’s exact scope without broadening it.
  4. Mark each named content type: art, UI, sound, music, voice, narrative, dialogue, localization, code, or promotional material.
  5. Mark the location: playable game, store page, community material, or another location named by the developer.
  6. Mark the timing: pre-generated, live-generated, or both.
  7. If live generation is reported, look for the required description of safeguards against illegal content.
  8. List unanswered questions separately instead of filling them with assumptions.
  9. For an apparently outdated notice, check developer announcements and remember that some approved survey answers require Steam Support before editing.

This method keeps the notice useful without asking it to answer questions Valve’s public documentation does not promise it will answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Steam AI disclosure name the AI model or company used?

Do not assume it will. Valve’s public survey documentation describes the kinds of content and generation practices covered, but does not establish that every public disclosure names a specific model or provider.

Will Steam list every AI-generated asset separately?

No guarantee exists. The public documentation describes a disclosure about a game’s AI use, not an item-by-item asset inventory. A broad statement may not identify each individual asset.

Can I use a community AI-label list as an official Steam record?

No. A curator or community list reflects that community’s presentation, not Valve’s official policy or an independently verified inventory. Use the game’s store page and Valve’s documentation for the official disclosure context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a disclosure tell me what percentage of the game was made with AI?

Not necessarily. Valve’s public description distinguishes content and generation timing but does not require a percentage. Do not convert a broad statement into a numerical estimate.

Does the disclosure include AI used only to make development more efficient?

Valve says efficiency gains from AI-powered development tools are not the focus of this section. The relevant focus is content that ships with the game and is consumed by players, or content generated for players while the game runs.

What is the difference between AI-assisted localization and live-generated dialogue?

AI-assisted localization can be pre-generated during development and shipped as fixed text. Live-generated dialogue is created while the game runs. Read the developer’s wording to see which timing and content scope it reports.

Does a live-generation notice guarantee that every response is legal or safe?

No. Valve requires developers to describe guardrails intended to prevent illegal content, but the public wording may not give enough detail for you to independently assess those controls or guarantee every output.

Can a missing disclosure prove that a game used no AI?

No. Valve’s public materials explain the disclosure process but do not establish that the visible store-page text is a complete independent inventory of every development use. A missing or hard-to-find statement is not proof of no AI use.

Can a developer change an approved AI survey answer?

Valve’s Content Survey FAQ says that after a build and store page are approved for release, some survey answers cannot be edited without first contacting Steam Support. Check the current page and developer announcements for updates.

Is Valve’s disclosure a quality rating or endorsement?

No. It is a developer-provided description reviewed through Valve’s process. It is not, by itself, a comprehensive independent audit, a quality score, or a recommendation to buy the game.

The Bottom Line

Start with the game’s current Steam store page, then read the developer’s exact wording. Separate pre-generated content made during development from live-generated content made while the game runs; identify the named content and where it appears; and look for guardrails when live generation is disclosed. Treat the notice as useful reported context, not a complete audit, percentage, cost breakdown, or endorsement.
