You can complete and sign a PDF without buying software. Use the free Acrobat Reader app on Windows or Mac, the free Acrobat app on iPhone, iPad, or Android, or Acrobat’s browser-based Fill & Sign tool. Interactive forms accept typed entries directly in their fields; a flat PDF lets you place text on the page. In every route, you can create a signature by typing, drawing, or inserting an image, then save a finished copy. Choose a locally installed app for sensitive documents, because Adobe’s online service uploads files to Adobe cloud storage. The instructions below cover each device, explain the differences between PDF form types, and show how to check the final file before sending it.
Which free PDF workflow should you use?
The best route depends on your device, whether you want an installation, and whether the document can be uploaded to a cloud service. For ordinary forms, all three official Acrobat routes handle filling, signing, and saving at no subscription cost.

For a private tax, medical, identity, employment, or legal document, the desktop or mobile app keeps the workflow on your device rather than using the browser upload service. For a quick, low-sensitivity form on a borrowed computer, the browser can be more convenient.
What do you need before you start?
You need the PDF file, a device with enough free storage to save a second copy, and the recipient’s instructions. An electronic workflow does not require a printer, scanner, or paid PDF editor. A touchscreen stylus is optional; your finger or mouse works for a drawn signature.

- Know where the finished file should be sent and whether the recipient requires a particular filename or signature format.
- Check that you have permission to handle the document, especially on a shared device.
- If the PDF is password-protected, obtain the password or an unlocked copy from its owner. A fill-and-sign app cannot bypass document permissions legitimately.
Adobe’s free desktop Reader is available for Windows and Mac and includes form filling, signing, and saving. The free Acrobat mobile app provides the basic fill-and-sign features on iOS and Android; Adobe states that no subscription is required for those features.
How do you fill and sign a PDF on Windows or Mac?
Use Acrobat Reader when you want a full-size screen, a local application, or the most reliable handling of long forms. Reader can work with both interactive fields and PDFs that have no form fields.
1. Open the file in Acrobat Reader
- Install and launch Acrobat Reader on your Windows PC or Mac.
- Choose File > Open (or the equivalent open command on the start screen) and select the PDF.
- Save a working copy with a new name before entering information, so the untouched original remains available.
2. Enter information in an interactive form
Click a highlighted or outlined field and type the requested information. Use the Tab key to move through fields, and read each label carefully before entering dates, addresses, identification numbers, or amounts. If a field displays a date format or character limit, follow it exactly. Use the form’s checkboxes, radio buttons, and drop-down menus rather than typing over their labels.
3. Add text to a flat PDF
Some PDFs look like forms but contain only a scanned page or static text. They have no clickable fields. Open Acrobat’s fill-and-sign tools, select the text tool, click where an answer belongs, and type. Drag the text box if it needs alignment, and adjust its size so it does not cover nearby labels. This places new text over the page; it does not rewrite the original PDF text or turn the scan into an editable form.
4. Add your signature
- Select the Fill & Sign or signature command in Reader.
- Choose one of the available methods: type your name, draw it with a mouse or trackpad, or insert an image of a handwritten signature.
- Position the signature in the designated area and resize it using its corner handles. Keep it inside the signature line and away from dates or witness fields.
- Apply the signature, then scan the page at normal zoom to make sure it is legible and not clipped.
5. Save a completed copy
Use File > Save As and give the completed PDF a distinct filename, such as the document name followed by “completed.” Close it, reopen the saved copy, and check every page. Confirm that text remains visible, checkboxes show the intended state, and the signature is in the right place. Opening the saved file catches accidental edits to the original and save-location mistakes.
How do you fill and sign a PDF on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device?
The Acrobat mobile app is suited to forms received by email, messaging apps, or cloud storage. Basic filling and signing are free on both iOS and Android, although premium features and availability can vary by region.

1. Open the PDF in Acrobat
- Install the Acrobat app from your device’s official app store and open it.
- Use the app’s file picker or the operating system’s Share or Open in command to send the PDF to Acrobat.
- If the file came from an email or chat, download it first so the app can create a saved copy.
2. Complete fields or place text
Tap an interactive field and enter the value. Acrobat mobile supports Acroforms, which contain predefined interactive fields, and Fill & Sign forms, where you place text and other elements from the toolbar. On a flat scan, choose the text control, tap the required location, and type. Pinch to zoom before placing small entries, then zoom out to check alignment.

3. Create and place a signature
- Open the fill-and-sign toolbar and choose the signature option.
- Type your name, draw with your finger or stylus, or select an image file containing your signature.
- Tap the signature to resize it, then drag it onto the signature line.
- Use the same method for initials if the document requests them separately; do not assume a full signature automatically satisfies an initials field.
4. Export and verify
Save or share the completed PDF from Acrobat, selecting a local folder or your approved storage destination. Open the exported file in a PDF viewer, not only in the editing screen, and inspect each page. Mobile screens can hide an entry that is off the edge of a page, so a page-by-page review is important.
Mobile Acrobat can fill and sign forms, but it cannot add, change, or remove the form’s underlying fields. If you are designing a reusable form or repairing its field structure, use Acrobat desktop instead.
How do you fill and sign a PDF in a web browser?
Acrobat online services provide a no-installation Fill & Sign workflow. The browser route is convenient, but it is not a local-only process: Adobe documents that uploaded files go to its cloud storage.
1. Check your browser and operating system
Adobe’s published support list includes Windows 10 and 11 with Edge, Firefox, or Chrome; macOS 11.7.10 (Big Sur) or later with Safari 15.2 or later, Firefox, or Chrome; Safari on iOS; and Chrome on Android. Browser support can change, so an up-to-date supported browser is the safest choice.

2. Open Fill & Sign
- Open Acrobat online services in your browser and choose Fill & Sign.
- Upload the PDF when prompted. Wait for the document to finish loading before entering data.
- Click or tap an existing field to type. For a flat PDF, choose the text tool and place text boxes where needed.
3. Add the signature and download
- Choose the signature tool and type, draw, or insert an image.
- Place and resize the signature, then inspect every page at a readable zoom.
- Choose the download or save command and store the finished PDF in a location you control.
- Open the downloaded copy after the browser session ends. Do not assume that a preview URL is a permanent local file.
What is free without signing in?
Adobe’s online-services FAQ describes a limited free, no-sign-in workflow that generally allows one transaction and one download for most tools. If you sign in, Adobe says you can fill, sign, and comment on PDFs for free. Adobe also says that files from users who do not sign in are soon deleted from its servers, but “soon” is not a promise of immediate deletion; avoid uploading a highly sensitive document merely because it is temporary.

What is the difference between an interactive PDF and a flat PDF?
An interactive PDF contains programmed fields that accept input. A flat PDF is a page image or static layout, so you add text and marks on top of it.
Interactive Acroform
Acroforms expose fields for text, dates, checkboxes, radio buttons, and lists. They are usually easier to complete because the document controls placement and may validate the type of entry. Tap or click each field rather than drawing a text box over it.
Fill & Sign form
A Fill & Sign form does not necessarily contain conventional fields. The app supplies text, checkmark, initials, and signature controls that you place on the page. This is useful for a form designed to be printed and completed by hand.

A scan may have no fields at all. Use placed text for answers and a signature image, typed signature, or drawn signature for the signing area. The original scan remains underneath; if the page is skewed or low-resolution, zoom in and align each item visually.
Can you change the wording or structure of a PDF for free?
Basic free fill-and-sign tools add information over a page, but they are not the same as editing the document’s original text or rebuilding its fields. Acrobat’s mobile documentation specifically limits adding, changing, and removing form fields to desktop Acrobat. If a field is missing, mislabelled, or in the wrong place, ask the document issuer for a corrected form or use a desktop tool that supports form-authoring rather than trying to disguise the problem with overlay text.
How should you choose a signature method?
Typing, drawing, and inserting an image are three input methods for the same fill-and-sign workflow. Choose the one that produces a clear mark and follows the recipient’s instructions.

- Typed: Fast and consistent, especially on a phone. It may look less like your handwritten signature.
- Drawn: Closest to signing by hand when you have a touchscreen, stylus, mouse, or trackpad. A shaky mouse drawing can be hard to read.
- Image: Useful when you already have a scanned signature. Crop the image tightly, use a clean background, and protect the image file because anyone with it may be able to reuse the mark.
These methods describe how Acrobat records a signature mark, not whether that mark has the legal effect of a qualified or otherwise regulated electronic signature. Laws and recipient policies differ by jurisdiction and document type. If the sender specifies a signature platform, certificate, identity check, witness, or handwritten original, follow those requirements instead of substituting a basic PDF mark.

How can you protect a sensitive PDF?
Use the installed desktop or mobile app when avoiding an upload matters. The browser service sends the selected file to Adobe cloud storage for processing, even when the service is free.
- Work from a local copy and save the finished file to an encrypted or access-controlled location.
- Do not use a public computer for identity, banking, health, or employment records unless your organization expressly permits it.
- Delete temporary downloads and signature images from shared devices after confirming the recipient received the correct file.
- Use the recipient’s secure portal when one is provided, rather than ordinary email for highly sensitive information.
A browser session may offer a one-time free transaction without sign-in, and Adobe says unauthenticated files are soon deleted from its servers. That behavior does not remove the need to assess whether uploading the document is acceptable in the first place.
What should you check before sending the completed PDF?
- Reopen the saved or downloaded copy, not just the editing view.
- Read every answer for spelling, dates, decimal points, and transposed numbers.
- Check that all required fields are completed and that checkboxes or radio buttons show the intended selection.
- Make sure text and signatures are inside the page boundaries and do not cover instructions, totals, or another person’s signature area.
- Scroll through every page, including appendices and pages that initially appeared blank.
- Confirm the filename, page count, and file type are what the recipient requested.
- Send the verified copy and retain the original and your completed copy according to the document owner’s retention policy.
What problems commonly occur, and how do you fix them?
The PDF opens but I cannot type
It may be a flat scan. Switch to the text tool in Fill & Sign and place a text box manually. If the document is restricted, contact its issuer for permission or a usable copy.
The text is in the wrong place
Undo the misplaced entry, zoom in, and place it again using the field boundary or nearby printed line as a guide. On a phone, rotate to landscape or zoom before dragging.
The signature is too large or clipped
Select the signature, reduce it from a corner handle, and move it entirely inside the signature area. Reopen the saved file to ensure the change was exported.

The recipient says fields are missing
You may have opened a flat version or used an app that only overlays text. Ask for the original interactive PDF, or use desktop Acrobat when the form itself needs field creation or repair.
The browser upload is blocked or fails
Check the supported browser and operating-system combinations, disable extensions that interfere with uploads, and try the installed desktop or mobile app. For confidential files, the local route is also the more privacy-conscious choice.
The saved PDF looks different in another viewer
Some viewers render annotations or form data differently. Export or save a standard completed PDF from Acrobat, then verify that copy in a second viewer before sending it. If the recipient requires a flattened file, ask whether they want annotations merged into the page.
Are built-in device tools an alternative?
Mac Preview, iOS Files with Markup, and Google Drive on Android are often mentioned as platform-native ways to add text or signatures. Their controls and support vary by operating-system version, and the available documentation does not establish identical behavior across all versions. Use them only after confirming that they can export the exact PDF format and signature treatment your recipient accepts; Acrobat’s desktop, mobile, and browser workflows have the clearest documented coverage for this task.
Which route is safest for your situation?
Choose the installed desktop app for a sensitive file or a complex form, the mobile app when the work starts on a phone or tablet, and the browser when installation is impossible and uploading the document is acceptable. All three let you enter data, add a typed, drawn, or image signature, and save a completed PDF; only desktop Acrobat supports changing the form’s field structure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fill out a PDF without creating an Adobe account?
Yes. The installed Reader and mobile app can be used for basic filling and signing without a subscription. Adobe’s online service also describes a limited no-sign-in transaction, but it still uploads the file to Adobe cloud storage.
Will a typed signature be accepted on every PDF form?
Acceptance depends on the recipient, document type, and applicable law. A typed mark may be fine for an informal authorization, while a regulated transaction may require a particular electronic-signature service, identity check, certificate, witness, or handwritten original.
How do I add a date or checkbox to a scanned PDF?
Open Fill & Sign, place a text box for the date, and use the checkmark or cross control for a box. Because a scan has no programmed fields, align each mark manually and inspect the exported page at full size.
Can I sign a PDF when I am offline?
The installed desktop or mobile app is the practical choice when the PDF and app are already available on the device. A browser-based workflow requires a connection to upload and process the document, so it is unsuitable when you cannot send the file to an online service.
