Fact-check an AI claim by treating it as a lead, not as evidence: isolate the exact statement, locate and inspect its original source, compare it with independent authoritative sources, and report what the evidence does—and does not—establish. If you cannot verify a claim, label it “insufficient evidence,” not “false.” This process works for answers from chatbots and other AI tools, as well as AI-generated statistics, quotations, citations, and images.

Why should I fact-check an AI answer?

An AI answer can sound polished and still be wrong. It may combine accurate and inaccurate details, rely on outdated information, invent a citation, or leave out context that changes the meaning. Confidence and fluency are not evidence of accuracy; Purdue University Northwest puts it plainly: “Confidence is not the same as accuracy.”

The House of Commons Library’s guidance for 2026 describes AI as “an assistant, not an authority.” That is a useful way to think about any generated answer: it can help you identify questions, terms, or possible sources to investigate, but you still need evidence you can inspect. A citation in an answer is a starting point to check, not proof that the cited material exists or supports the claim.

Fact-checking is especially important when a claim could affect someone’s health, legal rights, finances, reputation, or understanding of a current event. Statistics, dates, historical events, scientific or medical findings, laws and regulations, quotations, claims about people or organizations, and citations, DOIs, or URLs all deserve extra scrutiny.

Match the amount of checking to the stakes. A casual trivia answer may need a quick confirmation, while medical advice, an accusation, an election claim, or a legal deadline warrants the original document and independent confirmation. If the consequence of being wrong is serious, ask a qualified professional to review the evidence rather than relying on a chatbot or a detector.

How do I fact-check something an AI told me?

Use a human-led workflow: turn the answer into a specific claim, trace it to inspectable evidence, check the evidence against the exact wording, and compare independent sources. The OECD’s scientific fact-checking framework distinguishes three possible outcomes: a claim is supported, refuted, or left without enough information.

1. Stop and classify the claim

Identify whether the statement is a factual assertion, statistic, quotation, interpretation, prediction, or opinion. Those categories require different checks: a quotation needs a source that contains the words, while a statistic needs evidence for its definition, population, time period, and measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rewrite the statement as one atomic, checkable sentence. For example, instead of checking a paragraph that blends several ideas, separate its claims about what happened, when it happened, and what caused it. Purdue University’s CHECK method starts with “Consider the Claim”; breaking a broad answer into individual claims makes it possible to test each one without letting a supported detail lend credibility to an unsupported one.

Mark ambiguous terms before searching. Words such as “caused,” “most,” “safe,” “recent,” or “the first” imply a standard that may not be stated. Ask what observation would support or contradict the sentence, and note whether the claim is about the past, the present, or a prediction. Predictions cannot be verified in the same way as historical facts; you can check their assumptions, model, and track record instead.

2. Ask for the source, then verify it yourself

You can ask the AI where a claim came from, but do not stop at its answer. Open the cited material yourself and check that the author or organization, URL, publication date, jurisdiction, and document are real. Generative AI can invent sources, and a real source can still be irrelevant or misrepresented.

The House of Commons Library recommends identifying each factual claim and verifying it with an independent source. Government of Canada guidance likewise warns that generated systems can produce invented references. A bibliography or a list of links is not a substitute for opening the sources and checking the relevant text.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save enough detail for another person to repeat your check: the document title, issuing body, date, page or section, URL, and the version you consulted. A web page can change, move, or be replaced. For a regulation or policy, record the jurisdiction and effective date; for a quotation, record the transcript, edition, or recording in which it appears.

3. Read the evidence that bears on the claim

Inspect the relevant passage, table, method, or dataset—not just a search-result snippet or a source’s headline. Ask whether the evidence supports the claim as written, or only a narrower version. A source that reports an association, for instance, does not by itself establish a cause-and-effect conclusion.

Note the terms and boundaries that shape what the evidence means: definitions, sample or population, geography, time period, and limitations. If the claim is about a law, check the relevant jurisdiction; if it is about a study, check which participants and dates the results cover. Purdue’s CHECK method specifically calls for examining whether the original source supports what the AI said.

Look for qualifiers that an AI summary may have dropped: “may,” “among this sample,” “under these conditions,” confidence intervals, exclusions, or a statement that evidence is preliminary. Read footnotes, appendices, and methodology when they determine what was counted. A headline can accurately summarize a finding while an AI answer overstates it by turning a limited result into a universal rule.

4. Compare independent sources

Use lateral reading: leave the page you are checking and investigate who produced it, why it was published, and how other credible sources describe the same issue. Compare more than one authoritative source, paying attention to whether they rely on independent evidence or repeat the same original assertion. Government of Canada guidance recommends comparing sources and checking that information is current and relevant.

When sources disagree, compare their authority and incentives, whether they are primary or secondary, their publication date and version, and the jurisdiction or population they cover. For quantitative claims, also compare definitions, measurement methods, sample size, and uncertainty. Check whether a source presents data or methods you can examine, or merely states a conclusion. Independent agreement is more informative when sources actually bring separate evidence to the question.

Prefer a primary document for the fact at issue, then use reputable secondary coverage to explain it. Several articles that all quote one press release are not independent confirmations. Check whether a source has corrected itself, discloses funding, or is speaking outside its expertise. Agreement can reflect a shared error, while a well-supported disagreement may reveal different definitions or time periods.

5. Stress-test your conclusion

Rephrase the claim and check whether the same evidence still supports it. Look for assumptions, omitted context, or a change in wording that could alter the conclusion; then consult another source or tool as a cross-check. A second AI answer is not independent evidence simply because it agrees with the first. Purdue notes that AI can be outdated, mix accurate and inaccurate information, invent citations, and omit context, so the underlying evidence remains decisive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try a deliberate counter-check: search for credible evidence that would disprove the claim, inspect the strongest criticism of the source, and ask whether a different definition produces a different result. If the claim concerns a person or organization, check the date and identity carefully; similar names, old announcements, and changed institutional roles are common failure points. Keep a record of what you checked so that a later update does not get confused with the original answer.

6. State the result and its limits

Use a label that matches what you found: supported, contradicted, misleading or out of context, or insufficient evidence. Briefly identify the evidence and its date and scope, and state any important uncertainty. The OECD’s framework treats insufficient information as a distinct result, not as a softer way to say that a claim is false. “I could not verify it” means the available evidence did not settle the question; it does not prove the claim is untrue.

Explain partial findings precisely. A claim can contain a correct number but attach it to the wrong year, country, or population; call that misleading rather than simply true. If a source supports only one part of a compound sentence, say which part and what remains unverified. Include links or full references when you publish a check, and distinguish what you observed from what you infer.

How can I tell whether an AI-generated statistic or quotation is true?

Trace a statistic to the underlying dataset, report, or study and a quotation to a source that contains the wording. In both cases, verify that the evidence matches the precise statement, including its date, scope, and context.

For statistics and percentages

Look for the original report or dataset and check how its authors define the measure. Confirm who or what was counted, where and when the data were collected, and whether the figure describes the same population and period named in the AI answer. Read the method and any stated limitations; a figure stripped of its definition can be technically real yet misleading when applied to a different group or time frame.

Check what the number represents before accepting an interpretation of it. A reported percentage is not self-explanatory: the relevant source should make clear what was measured and how. Ask what the denominator is, whether responses were missing, how the sample was selected, and whether rounding changes the comparison. If the AI gives a number but you cannot find an inspectable source for it, do not repeat it as established fact.

Do not infer a trend from two figures without checking that the same method was used in both periods. For surveys or experiments, look for sample size, uncertainty, and limitations; a small difference may not support a sweeping conclusion. Correlation, ranking, or a before-and-after change also needs an explanation of what was measured and what alternative causes remain.

For quotations and citations

Search the cited document for the exact wording and verify who said or wrote it, when, and in what context. A quotation that appears on a secondary page may have been shortened or detached from the surrounding passage, so trace it back to the original speaker, publication, or transcript where possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check that each cited item exists and that its author, title, date, and URL point to the claimed work. If a citation, DOI, or URL cannot be confirmed, that citation does not validate the claim. An authentic reference can still fail to support the answer, so read the material it points to rather than relying on its title.

Be cautious with translated or paraphrased quotations. Confirm whether the words are verbatim, whether punctuation or ellipses remove a qualification, and whether the speaker was describing a possibility rather than asserting a fact. For a quotation attributed to an institution, verify that the named person actually held the stated role on the date in question.

How do I verify an AI-generated image or a claim attached to a picture?

Do not treat a convincing image as proof that its caption or story is true. Check the publisher and domain, look for reliable reporting or a debunk of the story, and use reverse-image search to find earlier appearances or altered versions.

  1. Pause before sharing. Keep the image and its caption separate in your mind: the image may be real while the accompanying claim is wrong, or the image may be genuine but unrelated to the event described.
  2. Check where the story appeared. Verify the publisher and domain, then see whether the account is corroborated by credible sources or has already been debunked.
  3. Run a reverse-image search. Search for the image to find earlier versions, other contexts, or signs that it was altered. An earlier appearance can help establish that an image predates the event it is claimed to show.
  4. Match the image to the specific claim. Check whether the available evidence confirms the date, place, people, or event stated in the caption. A visual match alone does not establish that context.

Crop or search distinctive portions if the full image produces no useful result, and compare the earliest credible appearance with later edits. Check metadata only as a supporting clue because it can be removed or changed. Look for independent photographs, official statements, weather or location details, and reporting from the claimed time and place.

Reverse-image search is a way to trace media, not a final verdict. Visual clues by themselves are not proof of an image’s origin or of the story attached to it.

Are AI detectors accurate enough to prove that text was AI-written?

No. The House of Commons Library says detection tools exist but are unreliable and should not be treated as conclusive. A detector result is not proof of authorship, and warning signs in writing are clues to examine—not a dependable way to establish who or what produced it.

Possible warning signs include unsupported assertions, citations that are obscure or loosely connected to the claim, sudden shifts in tone or detail, and mistakes in dates, names, or institutional roles. These can help direct a fact-check toward weak points in an answer, but they do not prove it was generated by AI. Assess whether the claims are supported by reputable, verifiable evidence instead.

Do not use a detector score as a substitute for a source, an accusation, or a disciplinary finding. Human writing can look formulaic, edited text can trigger a detector, and generated text can evade one. The fair question is what the text asserts and whether those assertions can be checked. Preserve drafts, notes, and source links when authorship itself matters, and allow the writer to explain the evidence and process.

What bias, incentives, and privacy risks should I check?

Examine both the claim and the source’s position: ask who benefits if the claim is believed, whose perspective is missing, and whether the source has financial, political, or institutional incentives. Generated content can reflect biases in training data or prompts, be out of date, or appear credible while being inaccurate, according to government guidance.

Check whether the wording treats one group, country, or institution as representative without justification. Look for definitions that favor the party making the claim, selective examples, and omitted counterevidence. An AI system may mirror the assumptions in your prompt, so restate the question neutrally and see whether the evidence changes.

Keep verification separate from disclosure of sensitive information. Do not put confidential or sensitive material into an AI tool unless you have verified how that tool handles the data. A fact-check does not require handing private information to another service; when possible, remove identifying details and verify the public claim using sources you can inspect.

What should I do when sources conflict or the evidence is incomplete?

Do not force a binary true-or-false verdict when the sources do not justify one. Compare what each source actually measured or documented, then explain the difference in scope or leave the result as insufficient evidence if the question remains unresolved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check whether the sources use the same definition, date range, geography, population, and version of the relevant rule or document.
  • Distinguish a primary source from a secondary account, and inspect the original data or text when available.
  • Compare methods, sample sizes, and uncertainty for studies or statistics; check whether a source supplies evidence or only asserts a conclusion.
  • Look for independent corroboration rather than several pages repeating one source.
  • State what is supported, what is disputed, and what the available evidence cannot establish.

A claim may be partly supported but misleading because it omits context, or it may remain unsettled because reliable evidence is unavailable. Reporting that distinction is more accurate than presenting uncertainty as certainty. Revisit time-sensitive claims later: new documents, corrected data, or a changed law can alter the result, so include the date of your check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use one AI tool to check another AI tool’s answer?

You can use another tool to suggest search terms or possible sources, but agreement between two generated answers does not establish the claim. Verify the evidence itself and prefer sources that provide material you can inspect.

What should I do if an AI gives me a source I can’t find?

Treat the reference as unverified and do not cite it as support. Search for the claim independently; if no inspectable evidence turns up, report that you could not verify it rather than declaring it false.

Should I share a suspicious AI-generated image while I investigate it?

Avoid forwarding it as fact before checking its origin and context. Sharing can amplify a misleading caption even when the image itself is authentic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a real citation mean the AI’s claim is correct?

No. The cited work may exist but be unrelated, outdated, or narrower than the answer suggests. The decisive check is whether the source’s evidence supports the exact claim.

How should I check an AI answer about a law or medical treatment?

Confirm the jurisdiction or patient context, consult the current primary rule or high-quality clinical guidance, and check the date and limitations. For decisions affecting rights or health, ask a qualified lawyer or clinician to review the evidence.

Is “insufficient evidence” the same as “probably false”?

No. It means the sources you could inspect did not settle the claim. Explain what was checked and what remains unknown instead of assigning a probability the evidence does not support.

How often should I recheck a current-events claim?

Record the date and version of the sources. Recheck when an event is developing, a policy may have changed, or a source issues an update; a correct answer can become outdated.

The Bottom Line

Treat every AI answer as a lead. Isolate one checkable claim, open and inspect the original evidence, compare independent sources, and match the wording to the right date, definition, geography, and context. Label the result supported, contradicted, misleading, or insufficient evidence—and never let a fluent answer, citation, image, or detector score substitute for evidence.
