To fact-check a Google AI Mode answer, treat the generated text as a list of claims—not as evidence. Save the exact interaction first, open every cited page, test each sentence against the passage it supposedly summarizes, and corroborate important points with independent sources. Then preserve the prompt, complete response, URLs, dates, context, disagreements, and verification status so another person can repeat your check. Google describes AI Mode as experimental and warns that it can make mistakes, so this workflow is necessary for medical, legal, financial, technical, and current-event information.
What is Google AI Mode, and why does it need fact-checking?
AI Mode is a Google Search experience that produces an AI-powered response with links for further exploration and supports follow-up questions. Google says it can use “query fan-out”: it breaks a question into related subtopics, searches those subtopics across multiple data sources, and combines the results into one response. That process can gather useful context quickly, but the final prose is still a generated synthesis rather than a primary document.
Google’s own warning is direct: “As with any early-stage AI product, AI Mode doesn’t always get it right.” A response may misread a page, merge facts from different contexts, omit a qualification, or attach a citation that is relevant to the topic but does not support the exact sentence. The cited page—not the AI wording—is the evidence unit.
Do not confuse AI Mode with an AI Overview. Both can show generated summaries and links, but the interface, rollout, and available controls may differ. Record which one produced the answer because a later reader may not see the same presentation.

How do I freeze the AI Mode interaction before checking it?
Capture the circumstances of the answer before opening links or asking follow-ups. AI Mode is experimental, its interface changes, and results can vary with account, device, language, country, and rollout state.
Record the session context
- Copy the prompt verbatim, including punctuation, pasted text, filters, and follow-up questions.
- Write down the UTC date and time of access. Include your local time only as an additional convenience.
- Note whether you were signed in, and identify the device, operating system, browser, and browser version when those details could affect the interface.
- Record country or region and interface language. Geographic availability and search results can differ.
- Label the product as Google AI Mode or AI Overview rather than using a generic “Google result” description.
Do this before investigating because your follow-up wording can change the generated answer and the links it displays. If a team is checking the same question, have each person preserve their own first view rather than assuming every account will receive an identical result.
How can I capture the complete answer and its sources?
Preserve the answer exactly as it appeared, not a cleaned-up paraphrase. Your record should let someone distinguish what Google generated from what a source actually states.

Include the opening summary, headings, tables, bullet points, caveats, “learn more” areas, and any text revealed by expanding the answer.
- Save every visible source link. Keep the displayed URL, page title, publisher or author, and the order in which links appeared. A link that moves higher or lower after a refresh is part of the session context.
- Capture follow-up turns. Store each follow-up prompt and the complete answer that followed it. Do not keep only the final turn; earlier wording may contain a qualification that the later response drops.
- Take screenshots or make PDF captures where permitted. Capture enough of the browser window to show the product, date context, and source cards. Store the original file without editing out inconvenient text.
- Keep a plain-text copy. Optical character recognition and screenshots can be hard to search. A text copy supports claim-by-claim review, while the screenshot or PDF preserves the visual record.
Google’s official pages do not document a universal transcript export, immutable citation package, or permanent archive URL for every AI Mode session. Manual capture is therefore the dependable method when the answer must be auditable.
How do I turn an AI answer into claims that can be checked?
Break the response into atomic claims: one factual assertion per line. A long sentence often contains several claims with different evidence requirements.

Assign each claim an identifier such as C-01, C-02, and C-03. Keep the AI sentence verbatim beside your normalized version. The verbatim text proves what was said; the normalized version makes the proposition precise enough to test.
How do I test whether each cited page really supports the claim?
Open every cited page instead of inferring support from its title, snippet, or domain. Read the relevant passage in context and check whether the AI sentence has added a conclusion that the source never makes.

- Identify the source. Record the URL, page title, publisher or author, and publication and update dates shown on the page.
- Locate the passage. Copy the exact paragraph, table row, figure, or section that bears on the claim. Note page numbers or headings for long documents.
- Compare scope. Check population, geography, industry, time period, sample size, definitions, and units. A study of one country or age group cannot automatically support a worldwide claim.
- Check the wording. Mark whether the source states the claim directly, supports only part of it, presents it as a possibility, or contradicts it.
- Inspect qualifications. Look for confidence intervals, exclusions, methodology limits, legal jurisdiction, safety warnings, and language such as “may,” “estimated,” or “self-reported.”
- Record access conditions. Note paywalls, login requirements, blocked scripts, broken pages, or content that changes after loading. An inaccessible page is not a verified source.
Use calibrated labels: supported when the passage directly entails the claim; partially supported when important context is missing; contradicted when the source says the opposite; and unresolved when the evidence cannot settle the issue.
How should I corroborate important information?
Google advises: “Always check important info in more than one place. Click the links for AI sources and try other Google Search results too.” Corroboration means an independent search or source, not a second page that simply repeats the same unsourced wording.
Use a differently worded search
Run a fresh query that does not copy the AI sentence exactly. Search the key entities, date, location, and measurement, then try a follow-up phrased from the opposite perspective. Google also recommends asking multiple versions of a question; the goal is to expose assumptions and see whether the answer changes.
Prefer evidence close to the underlying event
- For research findings, look for the original study, dataset, or methods report.
- For rules and official decisions, prefer the responsible regulator, court, standards body, or government publisher.
- For company or product claims, look for a dated technical document or filing rather than an unsourced roundup.
- For expert interpretation, identify the named expert, their affiliation, and the evidence they cite.
Two pages are not automatically independent. They may copy one press release, syndicate one article, or cite the same study. Trace each source’s origin before treating agreement as corroboration.
What should I do when sources disagree?
Do not silently choose the page that matches the AI answer. Preserve both sources and explain exactly where they differ.
- Quote or summarize the wording each source supports, keeping the relevant date and scope attached.
- Compare methods, definitions, populations, geographic coverage, and update dates.
- Check whether one source reports a preliminary result while another reports a later revision.
- State what can be concluded safely and mark the remaining point unresolved if the conflict cannot be honestly settled.
A useful audit note might say: “Source A reports 2024 data for one region; Source B reports 2023 data worldwide. They are not measuring the same thing, so the AI’s global 2024 wording is not established.” This is more informative than assigning a single winner without explaining the mismatch.
How do I preserve a source trail someone else can reproduce?
Store the interaction and the verification record together in a versioned folder or research note. The following fields are sufficient for most editorial, compliance, and team reviews:

Hashing a capture or maintaining a versioned research note can help demonstrate that the record was not altered later; this is an editorial control, not a guarantee supplied by Google. If a page offers an archive or snapshot, record that reference alongside the live URL and the capture date, because archived content may omit scripts, images, or later corrections.

Use them as discovery aids, not automatic proof. Google says AI features surface relevant links and that pages must meet ordinary Search technical requirements to be eligible as supporting links. Eligibility and relevance do not establish that a page entails the generated sentence.
Google is adding clearer inline links, moving links higher in responses more often, and showing context about why a link may be useful. Those changes make inspection easier but do not remove the need to read the underlying page. Google’s Preferred Sources feature is also being extended to AI Overviews and AI Mode so users can more easily identify sources they already trust. Treat the label as a way to find a familiar publisher; still check the article’s author, date, methods, and evidence.
How should I compare two AI Mode answers or two source sets?
When answers differ, compare the evidence behind them rather than counting how many citations each displays.

An answer with fewer links can be stronger if each link directly supports a claim and the source trail is reproducible. Conversely, a heavily linked answer may still be weak when links are tangential, duplicated, or too old for a fast-changing question.

What does a practical claim-by-claim check look like?
Suppose AI Mode states that a policy took effect on a particular date and applies to a specific group. Treat that sentence as at least two claims: the effective date and the covered group.
- Copy the sentence exactly and assign separate claim IDs.
- Open the cited policy page and find the effective-date clause and scope definition.
- Check whether the page is a proposal, final rule, guidance document, or later amendment.
- Search the responsible authority independently using the policy name, date, and jurisdiction.
- Record any discrepancy, such as an effective date that differs from an announcement date.
- Publish only the wording supported by the documents, with the jurisdiction and date attached.
The same method works for a technical specification, a scientific result, a product capability, or a breaking-news claim. The subject changes; the evidence discipline does not.

What are the most common fact-checking failures?
Checking only the first citation
Problem: The first link may support one paragraph but not the answer’s other claims. Fix: Map every material sentence to a source passage and mark unsupported claims separately.
Relying on snippets or titles
Problem: Search snippets are truncated and can omit exceptions. Fix: read the page itself and preserve the exact passage.
Ignoring dates and geography
Problem: A true statement from another year or jurisdiction becomes false when generalized. Fix: carry date, region, population, and definition with every number or conclusion.
Using copied repetition as corroboration
Problem: Several articles may repeat one original error. Fix: trace claims to primary documents, datasets, regulators, courts, standards bodies, or named experts.
Editing the record before review
Problem: A shortened transcript hides what the system actually said. Fix: retain an untouched capture and create an annotated working copy.
Assuming the interface is permanent
Problem: Link placement and controls can change during rollout. Fix: date screenshots, identify AI Mode versus AI Overview, and retain the session context.

Write “Google’s answer says” when describing the generated output, and reserve stronger wording for what the underlying source establishes. Quote only passages you personally verified. Include the source owner and date so readers can judge whether the evidence still applies.

If the response appears wrong, Google recommends sending feedback. Feedback can help identify a problem, but it does not replace your source record or make the original answer reliable. Keep the claim map and captures even after submitting feedback because the displayed response may later change.
What is the minimum audit checklist?
- Prompt, follow-ups, product label, UTC timestamp, account state, device, browser, language, and region saved.
- Complete answer, tables, caveats, and every visible source link captured.
- Each material sentence split into an atomic claim with an identifier.
- Every citation opened and matched to an exact passage, figure, or table.
- Dates, geography, population, definitions, methods, and uncertainty checked.
- Important claims corroborated independently, using differently worded searches.
- Conflicts preserved and explained rather than silently resolved.
- Source trail, captures, archive references, and verification statuses stored together.
This process turns a fast, changing AI Search response into a reviewable record. It does not make the generated prose authoritative; it shows precisely which parts survive contact with the underlying evidence.

What if a cited page is behind a paywall or disappears?
Record the blocked or missing status instead of treating the citation as verified. Preserve the URL and capture what was visible, then seek an accessible primary document or an independent source that reproduces the relevant evidence.
How can a team review the same AI Mode check later?
Share the untouched capture, the claim IDs, and the claim-to-passage mapping in a versioned location. Include the access context and any disagreements so a reviewer can distinguish a changed interface or page from an error in the original check.
