Fact-check an AI answer by treating every factual statement as unverified, splitting the response into individual claims, and tracing the important ones to the original rule, paper, dataset, court decision, regulator, or official statistic. Then confirm that each cited source exists, read the relevant passage in context, check its date and scope, and corroborate consequential claims independently. AI systems can produce convincing but false statements, fabricated quotations, and nonexistent citations, so a polished answer is only a starting point—not evidence.
What does it mean to fact-check an AI answer?
Fact-checking an AI answer is a claim-by-claim comparison between what the system says and the best available independent evidence. You are not grading the prose or asking whether the response sounds plausible. You are determining whether each proposition is supported, contradicted, or still unresolved.
OpenAI’s Help Center warns that ChatGPT can be useful but is not always right, including cases involving fabricated quotes, studies, citations, and references. The House of Commons Library describes AI as an assistant rather than an authority. Government guidance in British Columbia and Purdue University Northwest Libraries makes the same practical point: AI-generated information is not automatically verified information.
A reliable check ends with a record that another person could audit: the exact claim, the source you actually read, the date you checked it, what the source says, and any uncertainty that remains.

How do I break an AI response into checkable claims?
Start by converting the answer into short, standalone propositions. Preserve every qualification—date, location, population, condition, exception, and degree of certainty—because removing one can change the meaning.
1. Mark each factual proposition
Separate statements such as “The rule took effect in 2024,” “It applies to small employers,” and “The penalty is $10,000.” A single paragraph may contain three different claims requiring three different sources. Keep opinions, predictions, explanations, and factual assertions in separate notes.
2. Preserve the claim’s boundaries
Copy the wording before paraphrasing it. Record who or what is affected, the jurisdiction, the relevant period, the unit of measurement, and conditions such as “in a randomized trial” or “for adults with this diagnosis.” A source that supports a narrower statement does not automatically support a broader one.
3. Label the claim type
Useful labels include date or deadline, eligibility rule, price, statistic, quotation, legal interpretation, health advice, financial advice, historical assertion, and causal claim. The label helps you choose an appropriate primary source and decide how urgent the check is.
Which AI claims should I check first?
Prioritize claims by the harm or cost of relying on them, not by the order in which they appear. Check anything that could change a decision, create a deadline, expose someone to legal or health risk, or cause a significant financial loss.
- Immediate decisions: deadlines, eligibility requirements, safety warnings, dosage instructions, legal duties, tax rules, and financial recommendations.
- High-impact numbers: prices, penalties, rates, percentages, forecasts, sample sizes, and statistics that support the answer’s conclusion.
- Specific or surprising assertions: an unusual study result, a precise quotation, a named person’s action, or a claim that conflicts with what you already know.
- Claims carrying the conclusion: if removing a sentence would reverse the recommendation, verify that sentence before checking background color.
For low-stakes brainstorming, you may sample fewer claims. For medical, legal, financial, employment, safety, or public-policy decisions, treat every material factual claim as requiring external confirmation.
How do I find the primary source behind an AI claim?
Follow the evidence upstream to the institution or researcher that created it. A primary source is usually the authority that issued a rule, collected the data, conducted the original study, published the legislation, or released the official record.

- Open the document itself. Prefer the official regulation, court opinion, research paper, dataset documentation, transcript, or agency bulletin over a blog that describes it.
- Capture the exact location. Note the page, section, table, paragraph, article number, or timestamp where the supporting passage appears. Save the stable document-specific address and the date you accessed it.
An AI-provided link is a lead, not proof. It can be outdated, redirected, truncated, or entirely fabricated.

How can I tell whether an AI citation is real?
Verify the citation as a bibliographic object before evaluating what it says. A plausible title and author combination can still refer to a nonexistent work.
- Search the full title in the publisher’s catalogue, a library catalogue, a DOI registry, or the issuing institution’s archive.
- Check that the author list, publication date, journal or publisher, volume, pages, DOI, report number, and URL match the AI response.
- Open the record and confirm that the document is about the same subject, population, location, and time period.
- Check whether the cited edition or version existed when the AI answer was generated. A real older document may not establish a current rule.
- Read the work rather than relying on its abstract, headline, or search snippet.
Stop treating a citation as support if no catalogue, publisher, DOI registry, or issuing institution can locate it. Mark it as unverified or fabricated and search for the underlying evidence independently.
How do I check that a source actually supports the AI wording?
Read the passage the AI claim depends on, plus enough surrounding text to understand its conditions and exceptions. The key question is not “Does this source mention the topic?” but “Does it support this exact proposition at this strength?”
Compare scope, not just keywords
Check the source’s population, geography, dates, definitions, sample, and outcome. A study of 200 volunteers cannot by itself establish an effect for every age group. A rule for one state does not establish a national requirement. A source saying that two variables are associated does not prove that one caused the other.
Check qualifiers and negations
Words such as “may,” “not,” “except,” “ preliminary,” “self-reported,” and “under these conditions” are evidence, not decoration. AI summaries often drop them and turn a limited finding into a universal claim.
Check numbers against the original table
Confirm the numerator, denominator, unit, rounding, baseline, and time period. A percentage can describe a subgroup, a relative change, or an absolute rate; those are not interchangeable. If the AI supplies a precise number without naming the collector, year, method, and denominator, treat it as a red flag.
How do I check whether an AI answer is current and in the right jurisdiction?
Record the source’s publication or update date, jurisdiction, version, population, and time period alongside every checked claim. A correct source can still be the wrong answer if the question concerns a later amendment, another country, or a different group.

- Date: distinguish the date an event occurred from the date a page was updated and the date a rule takes effect.
- Version: note whether you read a draft, archived edition, current consolidated text, software release, or superseded guidance.
- Jurisdiction: identify the country, state, province, municipality, court, regulator, or organization that has authority.
- Population and scope: check age, industry, income level, disease status, sample inclusion criteria, and any exclusions.
- Time period: ensure that a statistic, price, rate, or forecast covers the period the question asks about.
When the answer does not specify these boundaries, ask the AI to state its assumptions, then verify the assumptions themselves. Do not silently fill a missing jurisdiction or date with your own guess.

How should I corroborate an important claim?
Use lateral reading: investigate who produced the source, why it exists, and what independent authoritative evidence says. Corroboration is not collecting many pages that copy one another.
- Read the primary source and identify its method, authority, and limitations.
- Find a second source that is genuinely independent, such as a separate regulator, official dataset, court record, or research group.
- Compare definitions, dates, samples, and methods before comparing conclusions.
- If the sources disagree, preserve the disagreement and investigate its cause rather than averaging the claims.
A commercial or advocacy page may provide useful context, but one interested source should not be the sole basis for a consequential assertion when neutral primary evidence is available.
What should I do when two authoritative sources disagree?
Do not blend conflicting figures or conclusions into an invented middle position. Build a comparison that explains why each source applies and which one answers the reader’s specific question.

For this jurisdiction and date, Source A is the applicable authority.” If the conflict cannot be resolved, mark the claim unresolved and say what additional evidence would settle it.
How can I test whether an AI answer is stable?
Rephrase the prompt and ask the system to expose assumptions, limitations, and source details. Material changes in names, dates, citations, or explanations are signals to increase external checking, not proof that one version is correct.

- “List each factual claim in your answer separately, with its date, jurisdiction, population, and confidence.”
- “For each claim, identify the original issuing institution or paper and quote the exact supporting passage.”
- “What assumptions or exceptions would make this answer wrong?”
- “Which claims are uncertain, disputed, or based only on a secondary summary?”
Use these prompts to expose what needs checking. Do not cite the AI’s generated explanation as independent corroboration, and do not accept a newly invented citation merely because it appears after a request for sources.
How do I record a fact-check so someone else can audit it?
Keep a compact claim ledger. Record the wording you checked, the source you read, the date, the result, and the remaining uncertainty.

What makes a source trustworthy for AI fact-checking?
Evaluate sources on five practical axes. A professional-looking page is not automatically authoritative.
Accuracy
Does the source faithfully report the underlying evidence? Look for clear definitions, reproducible calculations, corrections, and a distinction between observation and interpretation.
Authority
Who produced it, and what expertise or legal, statistical, scientific, or institutional mandate do they have? Authority is claim-specific: a regulator may control a rule, while an original research team controls the details of its experiment.

Does the source fit the reader’s place, population, question, and date? An authoritative source can be irrelevant if it addresses a different jurisdiction or an obsolete version.
Transparency
Can you see the methods, documents, data definitions, authors, funding, and links to underlying material? Stable, document-specific locations are stronger than a homepage that changes without notice.
Purpose
Is the source informing, selling, lobbying, litigating, or persuading? Purpose does not make a source false, but it tells you what incentives and omissions to examine.
What red flags suggest an AI answer or citation is unreliable?
- The cited article, book, study, case, or report cannot be found in the relevant catalogue, publisher site, DOI registry, or institutional archive.
- The source exists, but its passage does not contain the quoted words, figure, date, or conclusion.
- A precise statistic omits the collector, year, method, denominator, or sample.
- A quotation has no original transcript, publication, page, or stable document location.
- One commercial or advocacy source is presented as the entire evidence base, with no relevant counterevidence.
- Different runs produce materially different names, dates, citations, or explanations.
- A polished page has weak provenance, no methods, broken links, or redirects that obscure the original document.
Any one red flag warrants checking. Several together justify discarding the claim until you can locate independent evidence.

Can you show a complete claim-to-passage check?
Suppose an AI answer says, “A 2024 rule requires every small employer to provide a specific benefit by 1 January 2025, with a $10,000 penalty.” Treat that sentence as at least four claims: the rule exists, it was issued in 2024, it covers every small employer, and it sets a deadline and penalty.

- Search the responsible regulator or legislature for the rule’s official title, number, and current text.
- Confirm that the document is real, identify its effective-date provision, and note any amendments.
- Read the scope section to see how “small employer” is defined and whether exemptions apply.
- Find the enforcement or penalty provision and verify whether the amount is per violation, per day, a maximum, or a different figure.
- Check the jurisdiction and effective date against the reader’s location and question date.
- Corroborate the interpretation with an independent official explanation or a second authoritative record.
Your ledger might conclude that the rule exists and the date is correct, but that the penalty applies only to a narrower category. The responsible revision would preserve the supported portions, correct the scope, and state any unresolved interpretation instead of repeating the original sentence.
How should I fact-check health, legal, financial, and safety answers?
Raise the verification threshold when a mistake could injure someone, violate a duty, or cause substantial loss. Use the relevant regulator, statute, court, licensed professional guidance, official health authority, or primary financial filing, and check the date and jurisdiction before acting.
- Health: verify diagnosis, dosage, contraindications, and emergency advice with an appropriate health authority or qualified clinician. An AI answer is not a substitute for urgent care.
- Legal: locate the current statute, regulation, court decision, or agency rule for the governing jurisdiction. Secondary explanations may miss amendments or exceptions.
- Financial: confirm rates, fees, tax treatment, eligibility, and risk disclosures in current official documents. Distinguish general information from individualized advice.
- Safety: check the manufacturer’s current instructions, regulator notices, standards, and recall information. Do not rely on an uncited summary for an emergency procedure.
When the consequence is immediate, pause the action until a qualified human or responsible authority confirms the critical point.

- Circle claims that affect a decision, deadline, cost, safety issue, or legal duty.
- For each priority claim, preserve date, place, population, conditions, and qualifiers.
- Find the original issuing institution, paper, dataset, legislation, regulator, or official record.
- Verify that the cited document exists and that its author, title, date, and identifier match.
- Read the relevant passage and surrounding context; compare definitions and numbers.

Publish only the claims your sources support at the same level of precision. Attach the source you actually read to the statement it supports, identify the applicable date and jurisdiction, and qualify limits where the evidence is narrower than the AI wording. Remove fabricated citations and do not conceal unresolved conflicts behind confident prose.
The practical standard is simple: move from assertion to original evidence, test the evidence in context, and leave an audit trail. AI can accelerate searching and claim extraction, but the authority comes from the primary source and your transparent comparison—not from the model’s fluency.

Yes, but the absence of a citation leaves you without a direct way to test the claim. Treat an uncited statement as a lead and locate the original evidence yourself, especially when the claim affects a decision or includes a precise number.
