Use several independent checks rather than trusting one detector. Start with the highest-quality original file, inspect signed Content Credentials (C2PA) and any provider watermark, run a checker that supports the suspected generator, reverse-search the image or distinctive video frames, review surviving metadata, examine visual, audio and timing clues, and verify the claimed event with independent sources. A positive signal can document a file’s origin or editing history, but a negative result, missing metadata or a convincing appearance cannot prove that media is human-made or that its caption is true.
What is the most reliable way to fact-check an AI image or video?
A layered workflow is more dependable than an “AI detector” score. Each layer answers a different question: where the file came from, whether a supported generator left a signal, whether copies existed earlier, whether the file contains contradictory technical evidence, and whether the depicted event fits independently verifiable reality.
- Preserve the best available file. Request the original export or camera file, not a screenshot, screen recording or messaging-app copy.
- Inspect provenance. Look for signed C2PA Content Credentials and provider-specific watermarks.
- Run scoped provider checks. Use a checker that supports the suspected provider and file type.
- Search for earlier sources. Reverse-search the image and search distinctive frames, captions, landmarks and audio phrases from a video.
- Review file evidence. Examine EXIF, codec, export and editing fields when they survived distribution.
- Inspect the media itself. Treat visual, audio and temporal anomalies as leads for further checking.
- Corroborate the claim. Check date, location, weather, maps, schedules, reporting and the publisher’s history.
Record what you checked and the exact wording of each result. In a high-stakes decision, have another person review the file and the evidence rather than converting one automated output into a verdict.
How should I preserve an image or video before checking it?
Preserving the original protects evidence that can disappear during ordinary sharing. Ask the source for the unmodified download or original export and keep a read-only copy before opening it in editing software.

What to request
- The file as uploaded or exported by the creator, at its original resolution.
- The original filename and extension, if available.
- The URL or account that first published it, plus the date and time shown there.
- For video, the complete clip rather than a short repost or screen recording.
Take a screenshot only as a record of how the post appeared; do not use it as a substitute for the file. OpenAI notes that credentials can be lost through screenshots, compression, cropping, conversion or sharing. A copy that has lost its credentials is simply less informative; it is not evidence that a person made the content.
How to keep an evidence trail
- Save the original in a separate folder and calculate a file hash if your workflow supports it.
- Make working copies for frame extraction, metadata inspection and annotation.
- Log the source URL, account name, download time, file size, dimensions and every transformation you perform.
- Keep the unaltered file available for a second reviewer.
What are C2PA Content Credentials, and what do they prove?
C2PA Content Credentials are cryptographically signed records attached to a file or its manifest. They can describe the originating device or service, creator claims and subsequent edits. The U.S. Office of Research Integrity describes a C2PA Viewer as a way to display origin, creator and edit history.
How to read a credential
- Open the file in a C2PA-compatible viewer.
- Check whether the signature validates and whether the credential belongs to the file you received.
- Read the complete action history: creation, edits, crops, format conversions and exporting tools.
- Note the identity or service that issued the record and the time associated with each action.
A valid, unbroken history supports a narrow provenance statement such as “this file carries a valid C2PA record showing an edit by service X.” It does not prove that the scene happened, that the person named in the caption consented, that the work is legally owned, or that the file is presented in the correct context. OpenAI explicitly cautions that provenance signals do not guarantee accuracy, lack of editing, legal ownership or contextual correctness.

Nothing conclusive. Credentials may never have been written, or they may have been stripped by a screenshot, crop, compression service or format conversion. The U.S. Office of Research Integrity states that the absence of an indicator does not prove a file is authentic. Report “no credential was found” rather than “the file is real.”
How do OpenAI and Gemini verification checks work?
Provider checkers look for signals tied to particular generation systems; they are not universal detectors. A positive result can identify a supported signal, while a negative result only means that the checker did not find the signal it knows how to detect.

| Checker or signal | What it can examine | How to phrase a result | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Verify | Supported OpenAI C2PA and SynthID signals | “A supported OpenAI signal was detected.” | It does not cover every generator, and an unsupported or altered file may produce no signal. |
| Google Gemini verification | Google SynthID and Content Credentials, when available | “Gemini found a supported Google signal” or “no supported signal was found.” | Coverage depends on provider, format and availability; Google documents an approximate rolling quota of 10 image checks and 10 video checks totaling up to 5 minutes per 24 hours, subject to change. |
| General visual detector | Statistical or visual patterns inferred from the pixels or frames | “The detector flagged patterns for review.” | Results can fail on new models, edited media, compression and unfamiliar content; no universal coverage is established. |
Use the checker on the original file whenever possible. Do not treat a “not detected” response as proof that the media was not generated with that provider; OpenAI’s API documentation defines not_detected as an absence of detected evidence, not proof of human creation.
When should a person override an automated result?
When the decision affects safety, reputation, employment, benefits, legal proceedings or public allegations, require documented human review. Compare the file, its provenance, the checker’s scope, source history and independent corroboration. Preserve the checker output with its date and version because services and quotas change.
How can I reverse-search an image or video?
Reverse search is primarily a source-and-context investigation. It can reveal an earlier publication, an unrelated event reused with a new caption, or older versions that expose cropping and editing.
For still images
- Search the full image with Google Lens or another reverse-image service.
- Crop and search distinctive regions separately: a sign, face, landmark, product label or unusual background.
- Open the earliest credible matches and compare dimensions, compression, captions and publication dates.
- Search the distinctive text in the image and the exact wording of the caption in quotation marks.
A matching image proves that a similar file existed at that location and time; it does not by itself establish who created the original or whether the depicted event was real.
For video
- Extract several frames: the opening, a clear face, a sign or landmark, and the moment central to the claim.
- Reverse-search each frame independently because one may match an older clip while another reveals later manipulation.
- Search spoken phrases, subtitles, on-screen text and distinctive sounds separately.
- Compare the full-length source with the repost for missing context, altered speed, cuts or changed audio.
Search results are shaped by indexing and may miss private posts, newly uploaded material or content with heavy edits. Treat a search failure as “no match found,” not as evidence that the clip is original.

Which metadata fields are useful, and why is missing metadata not proof?
Metadata can expose contradictions between the claimed capture and the file’s technical history, but social platforms routinely remove it. Inspect it as supporting evidence rather than a binary authenticity test.
Fields worth reviewing
- EXIF date and time: compare with the stated event and the camera’s time zone.
- Camera make, model and lens: ask whether the claimed device could have produced the dimensions and optical characteristics.
- Editing software: note applications and export steps that may explain a crop, color grade or recompression.
- Video codec and export details: compare frame rate, keyframe structure, resolution and encoder history with the claimed source.
- GPS or location fields: treat them as claims that require independent confirmation, not as a guaranteed location.
Look for inconsistencies, such as a capture date after the alleged event or an editing application where the post claims an untouched camera file. Conversely, a clean or empty metadata panel is common after reposting, messaging, screenshots and platform processing. It does not establish either authenticity or fakery.
What visual, audio and timing clues should I examine?
Artifacts are prompts for corroboration, not standalone proof. Modern generators and ordinary editing can produce overlapping defects, while compression can create false alarms.
Visual clues
- Garbled, unstable or nonsensical text on signs, labels and screens.
- Malformed hands, fingers, teeth, ears, jewelry or eyeglass frames.
- Repeated textures, cloned background details or patterns that do not follow perspective.
- Shadows and highlights pointing in incompatible directions.
- Reflections that omit an object or show a different pose.
- Warping around a face edge, hairline, glasses, fingers or the boundary between subject and background.
- Uneven resolution or sharpness that changes abruptly within one object.
Audio and temporal clues in video
- Lip movements that do not match phonemes or the timing of speech.
- Voice tone, room echo or background noise that changes between cuts.
- Objects, hands, jewelry or facial features that jump between adjacent frames.
- Impossible motion, inconsistent lighting or a background that bends as the camera moves.
- Audio that begins or ends unnaturally, or a soundtrack that masks the original scene.
Inspect the video at normal speed, slow speed and frame by frame, then compare suspicious sections with the full clip. A single malformed frame may be a decoding error; a repeated pattern across many frames is a stronger reason to investigate the source and provenance.
How do I verify the event, date and caption?
Authenticating a file and authenticating its claim are separate jobs. Even a file with an intact provenance history can be attached to a false caption, an old event or a different location.

Build a context checklist
- Search independent reporting from outlets that were not merely copying the same post.
- Compare the claimed date with local weather, shadows, seasonal vegetation and known public events.
- Use maps and street-level imagery to test landmarks, road layouts, signs and building orientation.
- Check official event schedules, transport notices, emergency alerts or public records when relevant.
- Find earlier posts from the claimed witness and inspect whether the caption, crop or location changed.
- Assess the publishing account: creation date, normal subject matter, correction history and whether it identifies a first-hand witness.
State the result narrowly. For example: “The file has a valid credential showing it was edited by a named service, but independent sources do not confirm the event.” Do not turn provenance into a claim that the caption is true.
How should I compare verification methods?
Choose methods by coverage, signal type, resilience and context. NIST’s 20 November 2024 overview treats provenance, watermarking, detection, labeling, testing and auditing as related but distinct approaches. Microsoft Research’s 19 February 2026 review likewise presents provenance, watermarking and fingerprinting as complementary media-integrity methods.
| Method | Primary question | Survives cropping, compression or screenshots? | Provides event context? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Signed provenance (C2PA) | What origin and edit history does the issuer attest to? | Only while the credential remains valid and attached; everyday transformations can remove it. | No. It describes file history, not whether the depicted event occurred. |
| Embedded provider watermark | Did a supported provider leave a detectable signal? | Depends on the watermark design and the transformations applied. | No. |
| Visual or audio detection | Do pixels, frames or sound contain patterns associated with synthetic media? | Performance varies with model, edits, resolution and compression. | No. |
| Reverse search and source tracing | Where and when did this or a similar copy appear? | Can work after some edits if distinctive content remains. | Sometimes; it can expose an earlier caption or unrelated event. |
| Independent corroboration | Does the claimed event fit external evidence? | Not dependent on the file’s embedded signals. | Yes, when reliable sources and first-hand context exist. |
No row is sufficient on its own. Combining methods reduces the chance that one missing credential, altered frame or overconfident detector decides the outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do when checks disagree?
Disagreement is normal because each method has a different scope. Do not average the results into a numerical “truth score”; identify which claim each result actually supports.
Common patterns
- Valid C2PA history, false caption: report the documented file history separately from the unverified event claim.
- Provider signal found, no corroboration: say a supported signal was detected, then withhold judgment on what the media depicts.
- No signal, strong visual artifacts: preserve the file, seek the original and investigate the source; neither result is conclusive alone.
- Reverse match to an older event: compare dates, landmarks and audio before calling the newer post manipulated.
- Metadata conflict: check whether a platform re-export or time-zone error explains it before treating it as evidence of fabrication.
For a high-stakes report, include the original file, hashes or download details, screenshots of provenance and checker results, reverse-search matches, metadata output, frame timestamps and the reasoning behind your conclusion. Mark unknowns explicitly.

What wording is safe when publishing a verification result?
Describe evidence and scope instead of announcing that a single test “proved” a file real or fake. Useful formulations include:
- “The file contains a valid C2PA history showing creation and two subsequent edits.”
- “A supported OpenAI signal was detected by the provider check.”
- “Gemini found no supported Google signal in this file; that does not rule out another generator.”
- “Reverse search located an earlier copy from a different event.”
- “Visual anomalies prompted further review, but they are not proof of synthetic generation.”
- “The event could not be independently corroborated as of [date].”
Avoid “proven real,” “proven fake,” “no metadata means genuine,” and “the detector says 100%.” Those phrases claim more than the underlying evidence can establish.
What changed in current guidance?
Several public sources now emphasize complementary methods rather than a universal detector. The Government of Singapore published “Tips to Spot Real and Digitally-Altered Content” on 17 October 2024. The Australian Cyber Security Centre published and reviewed “Content Credentials: Strengthening multimedia integrity in the generative AI era” on 30 January 2025. Microsoft Research’s 19 February 2026 review and NIST’s 20 November 2024 overview both frame provenance, watermarking, detection and auditing as parts of a broader integrity process. Google’s Gemini help documentation also describes rolling usage limits and warns that availability can change, so checker access should be recorded at the time of review.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Google Lens prove that a photo is AI-generated?
No. Lens can help locate earlier copies, related pages and visual matches, which is valuable for tracing a source or a reused caption. A lack of matches may reflect limited indexing, a new upload or heavy edits, so it cannot establish human authorship.
Does removing metadata make a video suspicious?
Not by itself. Social networks, messaging apps, screenshots and editing exports commonly strip EXIF and other fields. Treat missing metadata as lost evidence and rely on provenance, source tracing and independent corroboration instead of inferring intent.
How many Gemini checks can I make in a day?
Google documents an approximate rolling allowance of 10 image checks and 10 video checks, with videos totaling up to five minutes in 24 hours. The quota and regional availability can change, so record the date and account conditions when a result matters.
Should I publish an accusation based on an AI detector score?
No. A detector score is an inference about the file, not proof of who made it or whether its caption is true. Preserve the original, document the checker’s scope, seek independent evidence and obtain human review before making a high-stakes allegation.
