Use a private VPN or mesh network when only you, your household, or a small known group needs access. Use a public reverse proxy with HTTPS when anyone on the internet must reach the service without joining your private network. A VPS can provide a separate public entry point for a service that remains at home, while direct port forwarding to the application should not be your default: Jellyfin’s networking guidance marks that pattern as not recommended. The right design depends on who needs access, whether the endpoint must be public, your DNS and port situation, and how much infrastructure you can maintain.
Which pattern should I use instead of Cloudflare Tunnel?
Choose the narrowest exposure that satisfies the users. A VPN keeps the application private and requires each client to connect first. A reverse proxy publishes a normal website or API endpoint and terminates HTTPS before forwarding traffic internally. A VPS reverse proxy separates the public address from a home-hosted application but adds another server to secure and operate.
| Pattern | Best fit | What the user must do | Operational considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPN or private mesh network | Owner, household, team, or another known group | Connect the device to the VPN before opening the private service | Maintain VPN membership and the application’s own authentication |
| Public reverse proxy | Public site, API, or service for people who cannot join a private network | Visit the public hostname over HTTPS | Point DNS to the proxy, allow the documented ports, maintain TLS and proxy rules |
| VPS reverse proxy to a home network | A public endpoint is needed while the application stays at home | Use the VPS hostname or domain | Operate both the VPS and the home-side connection; the cited guidance does not establish a universal cost, performance, or security winner |
| Direct port forwarding | An option readers may encounter, not the recommended default | Connect directly to the application’s forwarded port | Jellyfin explicitly labels direct forwarding as not recommended |
These are architectures, not guarantees. A carefully maintained public proxy can be safer for a public service than trying to force every visitor through a private network, while a VPN is usually simpler and less exposed for a personal dashboard.
Do I actually need to make the service public?
No. If the service is for a limited, known audience, avoid public exposure and give those users private-network access instead. Home Assistant documents VPN access and SSH-tunnel access for remote use; its VPN example requires the client to establish the VPN connection before using Home Assistant remotely (Home Assistant remote access documentation).

Use private access for personal and household services
Private access fits a home-automation dashboard, media library, internal admin panel, development environment, or family-only application. The service can remain on a private address, and the VPN controls which devices can reach that address. You still need unique passwords, multifactor authentication where available, updates, and sensible authorization; a VPN is an access path, not a replacement for the application’s security controls.
Use public access when enrollment is unrealistic
A public website, webhook receiver, customer API, or service for unaffiliated users cannot assume that every visitor will install a VPN or obtain an account in your private network. In that case, publish a dedicated hostname through a reverse proxy, require HTTPS, and enforce authentication and authorization at the application or an additional access layer.

DNS and a listening port make a service reachable; they do not decide who is allowed to use it. Treat identity, session protection, rate limiting, and administrative separation as separate design tasks.
How does a private VPN protect a self-hosted service?
A VPN creates an authenticated private path to the network or host. The application is not advertised as a normal public website; a user first joins the VPN, then connects to the service’s private address.
- Define the users and devices. List the people and devices that need access. Do not issue broad access to machines that only need one service.
- Choose where the VPN terminates. It may run on the home router, a gateway host, or another always-on system. Keep its software and operating system updated.
- Limit reachable networks. Configure the VPN so clients can reach only the required host or subnet. Do not use a full-network route when a single service is sufficient.
- Keep the application private. Bind the service to its private interface where the application supports that setting, and block unrelated inbound traffic with the host and router firewalls.
- Enroll and revoke deliberately. Give each person or device its own credentials or key. Remove access when a device is lost, a person leaves the group, or the service no longer needs remote access.
- Connect before browsing. The remote device must establish the VPN session first. Then use the private hostname or address documented for the application.
- Test from an external network. Use cellular data or another network, not the same Wi-Fi, to confirm that the VPN path works and that the application is not accidentally reachable without it.
Home Assistant’s security guidance also discusses VPN and SSH-tunnel approaches and stresses maintaining normal account security even when remote access is private (Home Assistant securing documentation).
How do I publish a self-hosted web service with a reverse proxy?
Put the proxy at the public edge, terminate TLS there, and forward only the intended hostname and paths to the application. The basic flow is DNS name → proxy on ports 80/443 → private application address.

Prepare the application first
- Give the application a stable private address or hostname so proxy rules do not break after a reboot.
- Decide which public hostname will identify it, such as
app.example.com, and avoid publishing unrelated administrative services under the same proxy. - Confirm the application’s own login, authorization, session, and update settings before opening the proxy.
- Check whether the application must be told that it is behind a proxy. Home Assistant, for example, requires a trusted-proxy configuration; otherwise it blocks proxied requests by design (Home Assistant remote access documentation).
Point DNS at the proxy
Create the required DNS record for the public hostname and make sure it resolves to the machine that runs the reverse proxy. If the proxy is at home, your public address may change; use a reliable DNS-update method or a stable public address. If the proxy is on a VPS, the DNS record points to that VPS instead.
Allow only the edge ports
For the documented Caddy setup, the public hostname must resolve to the Caddy machine and ports 80 and 443 must reach Caddy. Port 80 is commonly needed for certificate validation and HTTP-to-HTTPS handling; the application’s private port should not be exposed directly to the internet. Caddy’s reverse-proxy quick start describes these conditions and certificate behavior (Caddy reverse proxy quick-start).
Forward to the private application
The proxy receives the request, selects a site by hostname, and sends it to the application’s private address. Keep the upstream destination private and restrict the proxy host’s outbound access where practical.
How do I configure Caddy for HTTPS reverse proxying?
Caddy can obtain a publicly trusted certificate when the hostname resolves to the Caddy host and ports 80 and 443 are reachable. The following minimal configuration illustrates the routing shape; replace the hostname and private upstream with values from your deployment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
app.example.com {
reverse_proxy 192.168.1.50:8080
}
- Install Caddy on the edge host using the method appropriate for that operating system.
- Place the site block in Caddy’s configuration file and set the upstream to the application’s private address and listening port.
- Create the DNS record for
app.example.comand wait for it to resolve publicly. - Forward TCP ports 80 and 443 from the public edge to the Caddy host. Do not forward the application port to the internet.
- Start or reload Caddy and watch its logs for certificate issuance and upstream-connection errors.
- Open the HTTPS URL from an external network. Confirm the browser shows a valid certificate, the expected application, and the application’s login page.
If certificate issuance fails, check the hostname’s public DNS answer, router forwarding, host firewall, and whether another service already occupies ports 80 or 443. A certificate does not prove that the upstream application is correctly authenticated or isolated.
When should I use Nginx or an application-specific proxy guide?
Use the proxy documented by the application when its deployment has special routing, headers, websocket, or upgrade requirements. Supabase’s self-hosting documentation states that HTTPS is required for a production self-hosted Supabase deployment and documents Caddy or Nginx with Let’s Encrypt (Supabase reverse proxy and HTTPS documentation).

That requirement is specific to Supabase’s production guidance; it is not evidence that every self-hosted application has identical prerequisites. Read the application’s current proxy instructions for required headers, paths, websocket support, callback URLs, and trusted-proxy settings before copying a generic configuration.
Can a VPS reverse proxy reach a service running at home?
Yes. Jellyfin lists a VPS reverse proxy to a home network as one possible networking pattern (Jellyfin networking documentation). The public DNS name points to the VPS, and the VPS forwards traffic through a secured connection to the home-hosted application.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why choose this layout?
- The public endpoint is separated from the residential network and can remain stable when the home internet address changes.
- The VPS can handle the public TLS endpoint while the application stays on existing home hardware.
- You can keep the home firewall closed to general internet traffic and permit only the connection from the VPS.
What new work does it create?
- You now patch, monitor, and authenticate the VPS as well as the home server.
- The tunnel or forwarding path between the VPS and home must be authenticated and resilient to reconnects.
- Logs, DNS, certificates, firewall rules, and resource limits exist in two environments.
The available guidance does not establish a universal performance, price, or security result for VPS relays. Choose one when its separation and stable public endpoint justify the additional maintenance.
Why is direct port forwarding usually the wrong default?
Direct forwarding exposes the application’s own listener rather than placing a deliberately configured edge in front of it. Jellyfin lists direct port forwarding but explicitly marks it as not recommended (Jellyfin networking documentation).
A direct forward can bypass the controls you intended to apply at a proxy, such as hostname routing, centralized TLS policy, IP allowlisting, request limits, and access logs. It also makes accidental exposure of an administrative interface easier. If you encounter documentation that suggests forwarding a port, verify whether it is describing a quick connectivity test or a supported production architecture, and check whether the application itself supplies equivalent hardening.
What security controls must remain after the proxy or VPN works?
Keep defense in depth. The network path determines who can reach the service; the application must still decide what an authenticated user may do.

Authentication and account security
- Use unique, long passwords for every account and enable multifactor authentication where the application supports it.
- Disable default accounts, remove unused users, and review active sessions and API tokens.
- Use separate administrator and everyday accounts so a routine session does not carry unnecessary privileges.
Home Assistant’s security documentation specifically calls out unique passwords, MFA, and updates as part of securing remote access (Home Assistant securing documentation).
Proxy and network controls
- Publish only the hostname and paths that users need; do not make router, SSH, database, or management interfaces public through the same proxy.
- Use IP allowlists for private administration when the users have stable source networks.
- Apply network-layer or proxy-layer rate limits and brute-force protections. Open WebUI’s hardening guidance recommends access control and rate limiting at these layers and discusses VPN, zero-trust access proxies, and authenticated reverse proxies (Open WebUI hardening documentation).
- Keep the proxy, operating system, VPN software, and application patched on a defined schedule.
- Store logs securely and decide how long to retain them. Watch for repeated login failures, unexpected paths, certificate errors, and upstream crashes.
Application awareness of the proxy
Forwarded headers can affect source-IP logging, secure-cookie behavior, redirects, and webhook URLs. Configure the application’s trusted-proxy or external-URL settings exactly as its documentation specifies. For Home Assistant, failing to identify the proxy as trusted causes requests to be blocked rather than silently accepted.
How can I verify that the exposure is secure?
Test the complete path from outside your home or office, then test that unintended paths remain closed.
- Check public DNS. Resolve the hostname from an external network and confirm it reaches the intended proxy or VPS.
- Check HTTPS. Open the URL, inspect the certificate name and validity, and confirm that HTTP does not leave users on an unencrypted endpoint when your proxy is configured to redirect it.
- Check application identity. Verify that the page is your service, not a default proxy page or another virtual host.
- Check authentication. Use a new browser session and confirm that unauthenticated requests cannot reach protected data or administrative actions.
- Check private boundaries. Test the application’s private port from the public internet and confirm it is not directly reachable.
- Check authorization. Log in as a limited user and verify that administrator-only functions remain unavailable.
- Check failure behavior. Stop the upstream briefly and confirm the proxy returns a generic error without exposing internal addresses, stack traces, or credentials.
- Check logs. Correlate a test request across proxy and application logs, and confirm that source addresses and timestamps are recorded as expected.
Common symptoms and fixes
- Certificate issuance times out: verify public DNS and that ports 80 and 443 reach the proxy, not the application.
- The proxy returns a gateway error: check the upstream address, listening port, local firewall, and whether the application is bound only to an unreachable interface.
- Home Assistant rejects requests: configure the proxy as trusted according to its remote-access documentation.
- Redirect loops or wrong callback URLs: set the application’s external HTTPS URL and forwarded-header or trusted-proxy options.
- Users can brute-force logins: add proxy or network-layer rate limiting and confirm the application’s account lockout or MFA behavior.
- The service works only inside the house: test from cellular data, then inspect DNS answers, router forwarding, carrier-grade NAT limitations, and host firewall rules.
How do I choose between a VPN, public proxy, and VPS?
Answer these questions in order; the first “yes” usually determines the architecture.
- Do only known people and devices need access? Start with a VPN or private mesh network. Require the client to connect before using the service.
- Must anonymous or unaffiliated users reach a normal web URL? Use a public reverse proxy with HTTPS and application authentication.
- Is the home connection unsuitable as the public edge? Consider a VPS reverse proxy, accepting the additional host and link to maintain.
- Does the application publish its own proxy requirements? Follow those requirements for trusted proxies, websocket handling, callback URLs, and production TLS.
- Are you considering direct forwarding because it is quick? Treat it as a last-resort exception, not the baseline design; Jellyfin’s documentation marks it not recommended.
Whichever route you choose, document the public names, private upstreams, allowed users, exposed ports, certificate process, update schedule, and recovery procedure. That record makes a future change safer than relying on memory.
What should I maintain after going live?
Secure exposure is an operating task, not a one-time switch. Review the design whenever the application, router, domain, or user list changes.

- Apply operating-system, proxy, VPN, and application updates promptly after reviewing release notes.
- Confirm certificate renewal before expiry and investigate renewal warnings rather than waiting for an outage.
- Review DNS records, router forwards, firewall rules, proxy site blocks, VPN memberships, and application accounts on a regular schedule.
- Remove stale users, devices, tokens, and public hostnames.
- Back up application data and export configuration securely so you can rebuild the proxy or VPN after hardware failure.
- Re-test from an external network after changing ports, DNS, TLS settings, authentication, or trusted-proxy configuration.
- Keep a rollback plan: know how to disable the public hostname, revoke a VPN credential, or stop the proxy without destroying the underlying service.
Vendor documentation changes over time. Before implementing a product-specific setting, check the current instructions for Home Assistant security, Caddy, Supabase, Jellyfin, or Open WebUI hardening as applicable.

Can I use an SSH tunnel instead of a VPN for one private service?
Yes. An SSH tunnel can carry a single service to an authorized remote client without making the application public. It is most practical for occasional, technically managed access; a VPN is usually easier for several users or devices.
Do I need to buy a domain name for private VPN access?
No. A private VPN can use an internal hostname or private address, so a public domain is not inherently required. A public domain becomes useful when visitors must reach a reverse proxy and obtain a publicly trusted certificate.
What if my home internet uses carrier-grade NAT?
Inbound forwarding may not work because your router does not receive a directly reachable public address. A private network with an outbound relay, or a VPS-based public endpoint, can avoid requiring unsolicited inbound connections to the home link.
Should the reverse proxy and application run on the same machine?
They can, but separation reduces the chance that a proxy compromise directly exposes unrelated services and makes the edge easier to rebuild. If both run together, still bind the application appropriately, restrict management access, and expose only the proxy’s public ports.
