Export your data before canceling an AI subscription, while you can still sign in and receive verification messages. Request the provider’s archive, download and inspect it, then save important documents, images, spreadsheets, PDFs, uploads, project assets, custom instructions, reusable prompts, memories and templates separately. Keep two protected copies. Only after verifying those backups should you cancel through the billing platform that charged you. Canceling generally stops future renewals; it does not itself create a complete backup, and it does not necessarily delete your account.
What is the safest order for exporting AI work before cancellation?
Use this order for every service, regardless of provider:
- Inventory accounts and billing. List personal accounts, team workspaces, API projects and subscriptions. Check whether each plan was purchased on the provider’s website, Apple, Google Play or through an organization.
- Request the official export. Start while you can access the account email or phone used for verification. Record the request date and the account used.
- Download the archive promptly. Save the original ZIP or TGZ without editing it. Provider download links can expire.
- Inspect the contents. Open the archive on a computer and confirm that expected conversations, projects and account data are present.
- Download work separately. Save generated office files, PDFs, images, spreadsheets, uploaded files and other assets from the individual chats or projects. Do not assume an archive contains every attachment.
- Create a second backup. Copy the archive and separate files to a USB drive or trusted cloud destination. Restrict access because conversation exports can contain personal, business or confidential information.
- Cancel through the charging platform. Keep the cancellation confirmation and the next billing date.
Build an account and billing inventory first
Make one row for every login, even when several services use the same email address. Record the account email, workspace or organization name, plan, renewal date, administrator, export request date, archive location and cancellation channel. A personal subscription and a company workspace can have different retention rules and different people authorized to export them.

Use a receipt, bank statement or app-store subscription page to identify the charging platform. The button inside an AI app is not always the place that controls payment. Also list API keys, prepaid credits, shared project ownership and automations separately. Canceling a chat plan may not close an API account or transfer a team project.

Start early enough for verification
Export while the account email, phone number and multifactor-authentication device still work. If a provider sends a one-time code or requires you to remain signed in, losing that access can delay recovery. Keep a note of the exact account and workspace from which you made each request; exporting the wrong login can produce a valid but incomplete archive.
What should I save besides conversation history?
An export is only one part of a usable handover. Create a simple inventory and mark each item as downloaded and verified.

For each important conversation, save a readable copy of the prompt and the final answer in plain text or Markdown, then keep the original archive as evidence. If visual layout matters, print the conversation to PDF or capture screenshots. Interactive elements, citations, code execution results and attachments may not render the same way outside the original interface.
Preserve reusable instructions explicitly
Copy custom instructions, saved memories, project-level guidance, style rules, favorite examples and prompt templates into a separate folder. Include a short README describing what each file is for, which model or workspace used it, and whether it contains confidential information. A transcript can show that an instruction was used without preserving the setting that applied it automatically.
How do the ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini exports differ?
The services use different export systems and have different limits. This table is the planning view; follow the provider-specific procedures below for the exact controls.

Compare services on more than the existence of an export button. Check what the archive contains, whether generated files are included, whether a phone app can start the request, how long delivery takes, how long the link remains active, whether an administrator must act, whether another account can import the result, and what remains accessible after cancellation.
How do I export ChatGPT history and files?
For an eligible personal account, request the archive before canceling and download it from the same signed-in account.
- Sign in to ChatGPT.
- Open Settings > Data controls > Export data, then select Confirm export. OpenAI also provides a Privacy Portal route.
- Wait for the export email. OpenAI says delivery can take up to seven days, and the download link expires 24 hours after delivery.
- Open the link while signed in to the same account that requested the export. Download the ZIP and keep the original unchanged.
- Unzip a working copy and check that the conversations and account data you expected are present. Download important generated files and uploads directly from their chats as an additional step.
OpenAI describes the archive as including chat history and other relevant account data, but that wording is not a promise that every attachment or rendered output is present. Open a few known conversations, search for distinctive prompts and confirm that any files you need open independently.

OpenAI documents self-service export for signed-in Free, Go, Plus, Pro and eligible Edu users. Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspaces do not offer self-service export; the workspace owner must handle the request. If you cannot see the control, contact that owner before your access ends. A workspace owner may also need to identify which shared projects or files can legally be copied to a personal archive.
How do I export Claude conversations and projects?
Individual Free, Pro and Max users can export from Claude on the web or Claude Desktop. The mobile apps cannot start the process.
- Open Claude on the web or in Claude Desktop.
- Go to Settings > Privacy and select Export data.
- Wait for Anthropic’s email, then download the archive before its 24-hour link expires. If the link expires, request a new export.
- Inspect the conversation and user-data files, then download important outputs from the relevant chats.
For Team and Enterprise accounts, an owner may need to enable member exports. A Primary Owner can request an organization-wide export through Organization settings > Data and privacy > Export Data. Anthropic states that organization exports do not include Word, Excel, PowerPoint or PDF files created by Claude, so download those files individually while the conversations remain available. Messages, files and projects deleted before a later export are not included.

Anthropic also says a personal Claude export cannot be imported into another personal Claude account and that personal-account migration is unsupported. Organize the files for manual reuse instead: place prompts in text or Markdown files, label project folders, and note which uploads belong with each conversation.
How do I download Gemini conversations, generated media and uploads?
Gemini Apps data is exported through Google Takeout rather than a Gemini-only download button.
- Sign in at takeout.google.com.
- Select Deselect all.
- Select Gemini for Gems, and select My Activity > Gemini Apps for chats, generated media and uploads.
- Choose Next step, then set the archive destination. Google supports delivery by email, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box.
- Choose ZIP or TGZ and create the export.
- When Google sends the message, download the archive within seven days. Delivery may take hours to days, although Google says most users receive the link the same day.
- Open the archive and verify the expected activity and media. Download any business-critical file separately if its presence is unclear.
Downloading Gemini Apps activity does not delete it from Google’s servers. Takeout is therefore a copy operation, not an account-deletion request. Check the archive destination’s storage permissions, especially if you choose a shared Drive or a third-party cloud account.
How can I verify an archive before I cancel?
Do not treat receipt of a ZIP or TGZ as proof that the backup is complete. Use a working copy and check:

- The archive opens without an error and has a plausible file size.
- Several known conversations can be found by title, date or distinctive text.
- Projects, saved instructions and account information expected from that service are present.
- Generated documents, images, PDFs, spreadsheets and uploaded files open independently.
- File names and dates are understandable enough for future retrieval.
- The original archive remains untouched in a protected location.
Test a few files from different dates rather than checking only the newest conversation. If an archive contains JSON, HTML or other structured records, make a copy before opening or converting them. Keep a note of missing items and retrieve those from the live service while access remains.

Keep a second copy on a separate device or trusted cloud account. If the material is sensitive, use the storage service’s access controls and encryption options, and avoid sharing the archive through an unprotected link. Do not put an archive containing client data on a publicly shared drive. When a project is subject to workplace or legal retention rules, follow those rules before copying it to personal storage.
How do I cancel without being charged again?
Cancel on the platform that appears on your receipt, not necessarily inside the app you use every day. Save a screenshot or email showing the cancellation, the effective date and the next renewal status.
ChatGPT subscriptions
For a plan purchased on chatgpt.com, open Settings > Billing > Cancel plan. If Apple charged you, cancel in Apple Subscriptions; if Google Play charged you, cancel in Google Play. Uninstalling the ChatGPT app does not cancel the subscription. OpenAI recommends canceling at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Cancellation stops future renewals and does not automatically refund previous charges, so save the platform’s confirmation.

Use the same platform where you subscribed. On the web or desktop, open Settings > Billing > Cancel. For iOS or Android purchases, use the app’s Billing > Manage subscription flow or the relevant app-store subscription screen. Anthropic says cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period and recommends acting at least 24 hours before the next billing date.
Google AI plans
In Gemini, open Settings & help > Manage subscription, then Google One settings > Cancel membership > Cancel. Google says Pro-only Gemini access and bundled benefits end when the AI Pro plan ends. Keep the Google confirmation and check that the renewal no longer appears.
What can go wrong, and how do I recover?
The export email never arrives
Check spam, confirm that you requested the export from the correct account, and verify that the account email or phone is still accessible. For a workspace, ask the owner whether member export is disabled. Do not cancel until you can download or otherwise preserve the required material. If delivery is still pending, record the request date and keep the subscription active long enough to receive it when practical.
The download link has expired
Request a new export where the provider permits it. Claude explicitly allows a new request after a 24-hour link expires. For ChatGPT and Gemini, start another export if the original cannot be retrieved, then monitor the new delivery window. A new request may produce a different archive, so inspect it again rather than assuming it matches the first.
Important files are missing
Search the original chats or projects and download the files individually. This is essential for Claude organization exports, which exclude office documents and PDFs created by Claude, and for any service whose archive does not clearly list attachments. Also check whether a file was deleted before the export; deleted messages, files and projects may not be recoverable in a later archive.

The account is managed by an employer or school
Contact the workspace owner before leaving the organization or losing your login. An administrator may be the only person who can export organization data, and personal exports may not include shared assets. Ask who owns the resulting files and whether copying them to personal storage is permitted.
You subscribed through the wrong billing screen
Find the charge in your Apple, Google Play or bank receipt, then cancel in that platform’s subscription manager. Removing the app only removes software from the device; it does not end a store-managed subscription.

Cancellation and account deletion are different operations. A cancellation normally prevents another renewal under the provider’s billing rules; it does not, by itself, erase the account or guarantee that every exportable item remains available indefinitely. If you want deletion, locate and follow the provider’s separate account-deletion process after preserving the data you are legally allowed to keep. Also check shared workspaces, API keys and team ownership separately, because ending a personal plan may not transfer or remove those resources.
Plan features can change when a paid period ends. For Google AI plans, Google says Pro-only Gemini access and bundled benefits end when the AI Pro plan ends. Other providers may retain basic sign-in or read access, but do not rely on a particular feature remaining available. Treat the verified backup as your durable copy.
How should I organize the backup for another service?
Create folders for conversations, prompts, instructions, uploads, generated files, account records and billing evidence. Use descriptive names such as 2026-10-26_project-name_prompt.md and keep a spreadsheet or README linking each important output to its source conversation. Convert essential prompts to plain text or Markdown so they can be reviewed without the original interface.
Do not assume one provider’s ZIP can be imported directly into another provider. Check the destination’s supported formats and privacy terms, remove secrets that no longer belong in a prompt, and upload only material you are authorized to transfer. Anthropic specifically does not support importing a personal export into another personal Claude account.

- Every personal account, workspace and billing channel is listed.
- The correct export was requested while sign-in and verification access still work.
- The archive opens on a computer and contains representative conversations.
- Generated documents, images, PDFs, spreadsheets and uploads were downloaded separately.
- Prompts, custom instructions, memories, project notes and templates were preserved.
- A second backup exists on a USB drive or trusted cloud destination.
- The actual charging platform is identified from a receipt or subscription screen.
- Cancellation was submitted at least 24 hours before renewal where the provider recommends that timing.
- The confirmation and next billing date were saved.

Can I export an AI account after I cancel its subscription?
Often you can still sign in after a billing cancellation, but access rules and plan features vary. Treat cancellation as a deadline: request and verify the export first rather than relying on post-cancellation access.

Not necessarily. Archives commonly provide structured files that preserve text and metadata, while the original interface layout, rendering and interactive elements may not survive. Keep screenshots or rendered PDFs for records where visual formatting is important.

How should I hand exported work to a new AI service?
First organize the backup into readable folders and convert essential prompts or notes into plain text or Markdown. Then check the destination service’s import rules; an export package is not automatically portable, and Claude explicitly does not support importing personal exports into another personal account.
Is it safe to store an AI export in ordinary cloud storage?
Only if the account is protected with a strong unique password and multifactor authentication, and sharing is disabled. Exports can contain personal details, confidential uploads and business instructions, so use a restricted folder and retain an offline copy.
Does canceling delete my chats and files?
Cancellation usually stops future renewals rather than deleting the account. It does not guarantee permanent access to every chat or file, however, so preserve the archive and download important outputs before canceling. Account deletion is a separate process.

Cancel in the store that charged you. A provider’s web billing page may not control an Apple- or Google-managed subscription, and uninstalling the app does not cancel it. Use the receipt or subscription screen to identify the correct platform.
Can a team member export an organization workspace?
Not always. ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspaces require the workspace owner for self-service export. Claude Team and Enterprise exports may require an owner, and a Primary Owner can request an organization-wide export. Contact the administrator before your membership ends.
How long do download links remain active?
OpenAI and Anthropic specify 24-hour links for their exports. Google’s Gemini Apps Takeout email link remains active for seven days. Download immediately, keep the original archive, and request a replacement if a provider allows one after expiry.
