Start your export as soon as you hear an AI service is closing. Confirm you can still sign in, check that your account and workspace can export, and read the shutdown notice for a separate final-export deadline. Download the archive promptly, open it to check what it contains, and keep the original in a secure location outside the service that is closing. An export is a copy of some data, not a guarantee that every conversation, recent change, or service feature can be recovered.
How do I export my data before an AI service shuts down?
Use the provider’s official export route while your account is active, then treat the resulting archive as a file you need to retrieve and verify—not as a backup that will happen automatically. The exact data categories, eligibility rules, generation time, and download-link expiry vary by service.
- Read the shutdown notice. Note when ordinary access ends and whether there is a separate or conditional final-export window. Do not assume you can request an archive after the service closes.
- Confirm the right account and workspace. Check which email address and sign-in method you used. If the service is managed by an organization, find out whether your role can export or whether an administrator or workspace owner must act.
- Start the export promptly. Follow the service’s official instructions, select each relevant data category, and complete any ownership verification. Keep access to the account’s associated email inbox or phone number in case the provider uses it to confirm the request.
- Retrieve the files before the link expires. Check for the provider’s completion email and download the archive as soon as it arrives. A request may take hours or days, and the link may remain usable for much less time than the export takes to prepare.
- Open the archive and inspect it. Confirm it downloaded successfully, can be opened, and contains the categories and files you expected. If something is missing, check the provider’s documentation and account eligibility, then contact its support or your workspace owner while access remains available.
- Keep the original and make a second secure copy. Store the archive somewhere independent of the closing service, such as suitable local storage or a cloud account you control. Limit access because the files may contain personal or sensitive information.
Do not delete the account or assume a successful request means the export is complete until you have downloaded and checked the files. Some providers warn that changes made while an archive is being prepared may not appear in it; previously deleted conversations may also be unrecoverable.

How can I download my AI chat history?
Use the provider’s export tool rather than relying on a browser’s saved page or a few manually copied conversations. Chat history may be one category among several, and some services make activity, generated media, uploads, or other account data available through a different route.

Before requesting an archive, make a short inventory of what you actually need. For example, a chat-only export may not preserve generated images or uploaded files in the same way as a separate media or activity export. Select all relevant categories the service offers, and check the shutdown notice for separate instructions about content created in a related product.
When the archive arrives, unpack or open it using a trusted tool on a device you control. Look for files or folders that correspond to the categories you selected, and open a sample of the conversations or other materials to confirm they are readable. Keep the downloaded original unchanged; if you reorganize or convert a copy for easier reading, retain the original archive as well.

These are not interchangeable routes. A Google Takeout export has category selections and multiple delivery choices; ChatGPT’s described route is a ZIP export with workspace-specific restrictions; Claude’s instructions distinguish individual, Team-owner, and Enterprise-owner access. Check the current provider guidance for details that are not stated here rather than assuming one service’s process applies to another.
How do I export from ChatGPT?
For an eligible personal account, request the archive in ChatGPT settings or through OpenAI’s Privacy Portal. The web settings route is Settings > Data controls > Export > Confirm export.

- Open Settings > Data controls > Export, then choose Confirm export. If you cannot use the in-product route, use the Privacy Portal’s data-request process.
- Wait for the export email. OpenAI says preparation can take up to seven days, so submit the request early rather than near a cutoff.
- Download the ZIP within 24 hours of receiving the link. Open it and check for the conversations and account data you need.
Self-service export is not available in Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare workspaces; contact the workspace owner instead. For Edu, whether export is available depends on your role, workspace settings, and data residency, so ask the workspace administrator if the option is missing. OpenAI says exports cannot restore chats that were already deleted.
How do I export Gemini Apps data?
Use Google Takeout from the Google Account associated with Gemini. The categories are distinct, so select the one that matches the material you need rather than assuming a single “Gemini” selection includes everything.
- Sign in to the Google Account you used with Gemini and open Google Takeout.
- Select Gemini if you need Gems.
- For Gemini chats, generated media, and uploads, select My Activity, then Gemini Apps.
- Choose ZIP or TGZ, then select a delivery method: email download link, Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or Box.
- When the archive is ready, retrieve it promptly. Google says most archives are available the same day, but preparation may take hours to days; email links remain active for seven days.
- Open the archive and inspect the relevant categories. Google cautions that changes between the request and archive creation may not be included.
If you send an archive to a third-party storage service, check that the destination folder is not shared. Once the archive is delivered there, that service’s terms and policies govern it. Prefer a destination with access controls appropriate for private conversation history, uploads, or generated media.
How do I export Claude data?
Claude’s export route depends on your account type and role. Active Free, Pro, and Max users can export, as can primary owners of Claude for Work Team and Enterprise plans.
- Individual users and Team primary owners: In the web app or Claude Desktop, go to Settings > Privacy.
- Enterprise primary owners: Go to Settings > Data management.
The download link requires sign-in and expires after 24 hours. Retrieve it as soon as it arrives. If you use a managed Team or Enterprise account but are not the primary owner, contact the owner to confirm how your data can be exported before access ends.

What data might be outside chat history?
Check the closing notice for product-specific content and companion features. A conversation export may not include items stored in another product area, such as bookmarks, browser history, uploads, generated media, or activity records.
Generated content and activity
Google Takeout separates Gems from Gemini Apps activity: the “Gemini” category is for Gems, while “My Activity” > “Gemini Apps” is the route for chats, generated media, and uploads. Select the relevant categories explicitly.
OpenAI’s Sora shutdown notice described a separate way to export created content at sora.chatgpt.com/sunset and said data associated with Sora would be permanently deleted after any final export window ended. The notice listed April 26, 2026, for discontinuing the web and app experiences and September 24, 2026, for the API; both dates have passed as of October 25, 2026. This is a historical example of why a related product’s content and final-export instructions should be checked separately, not a promise that the export route remains available.
Browser data and saved links
OpenAI’s Atlas notice distinguished ChatGPT conversation history from Atlas browser data. It said bookmarks might not transfer automatically and recommended exporting them to HTML for import into another browser; open tabs could be bookmarked or their URLs copied, while browser history might not transfer. The notice’s scheduled date, August 9, 2026, has also passed as of October 25, 2026, so treat it only as a historical example and consult the current notice for any live service. Cookies and session files can grant access to accounts; do not treat them as ordinary bookmarks or share them with others.

Verification answers two separate questions: did you obtain a usable archive, and does it contain the data you intended to save? A successful download alone does not prove either point.

- Check the file. Confirm the download finished and the archive opens without an error.
- Check coverage. Compare the folders or files with the categories you selected and open samples of important conversations or other materials.
- Keep the original. Preserve the provider’s downloaded archive unchanged. Make a separate working copy if you need to sort or convert files.
- Store a second copy independently. Use secure local storage or a suitable cloud account not tied to the service being closed. An external drive is an option, not a requirement.
- Limit exposure. Choose private storage, restrict sharing, and avoid sending the archive to a shared folder or account you do not control.
Google specifically cautions that a third-party destination’s terms and policies apply after delivery. More generally, treat exports as private account data: use access controls and storage you trust, and do not upload them to another AI service simply to make them easier to browse unless you understand that service’s handling and retention terms.
What can go wrong, and how can I respond?
The most common losses come from waiting, exporting from the wrong account, overlooking a workspace restriction, or failing to retrieve a short-lived link. Use the symptom that matches your situation to decide what to do next.

Will an export restore my account in another AI service?
No provider instruction here establishes that its archive can be imported into another AI service or recreate the original account’s features. Preserve the files as a readable record and check the receiving service’s supported import formats separately before planning a migration.

Can I request an AI data export for someone else’s account?
Do not assume you can: export flows are tied to account sign-in and may require ownership verification. For an organization-managed account, ask the workspace owner or administrator to explain the authorized process.
Should I delete my account after downloading the archive?
Only after you have checked the archive and decided what to do with any remaining account data. Deletion is a separate action from export and may remove access to material that was not included in the files you downloaded.
Can I save an AI export to a shared cloud folder?
Technically a delivery destination may permit it, but a shared folder can expose private conversations, uploads, or generated content to other people. Check folder-sharing settings before delivery and use a private destination when possible.
Does exporting data keep the AI service’s tools working?
No. An archive preserves files made available by the export; it does not keep the provider’s application, account access, or features running after shutdown.
