To export your ChatGPT data, sign in and open Settings > Data controls > Export data > Export, then confirm the request. OpenAI sends a download notice by email or SMS; the export can take up to seven days, and the download link expires 24 hours after delivery. Download the ZIP while signed in to the same account, check that it contains the conversations and files you need, and keep the original ZIP plus a second copy on secure local storage. If your account does not offer the Settings export, use the OpenAI Privacy Portal instead.
What does a ChatGPT data export do?
An export creates a downloadable ZIP archive containing your chat history and other relevant account data. It is a personal copy for reference, records, or backup; it is not a way to recreate the ChatGPT interface on another device or merge two accounts.
The archive can include conversation data, files and other assets used in conversations, and account or conversation metadata where applicable. Larger exports may split conversations across numbered JSON files instead of one file named conversations.json. Shared-conversation details may appear in shared_conversations.json.

How do I export ChatGPT data on the web?
Use the web settings when you can sign in to the account whose data you want to copy.
- Sign in to ChatGPT.
- Open the profile menu and select Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Under Export data, choose Export.
- Select Confirm export to submit the request.
The request is tied to the signed-in account. If you use more than one personal account, verify the account identity before confirming; an export request from the wrong account will not contain the conversations you expected.
How do I export ChatGPT data from an iPhone or Android phone?
The mobile apps provide the same account-level export request through account settings. The labels can lead you to the web flow if the app cannot complete the process itself.
- Open ChatGPT account settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Choose Export data and confirm the request.
- If the app displays Open ChatGPT on web, select it and complete the web steps while signed in to the same account.
Do not switch accounts when the browser opens. The eventual download must be authorized for the account that made the request.
What should I do if the Settings export is unavailable?
Use the OpenAI Privacy Portal as the fallback for eligible consumer accounts.
- Open the Privacy Portal.
- Choose Make a Privacy Request.
- Select I have a consumer ChatGPT account.
- Choose Download my data.
- Follow the prompts to submit the request.
The portal is useful when the in-product controls are missing or inaccessible. It does not remove the need to verify the account associated with the request.
How long does a ChatGPT export take, and how long is the link valid?
OpenAI says, “Exports can take up to 7 days to arrive.” The notice may come by email or SMS. This is a maximum stated in the current Help Center guidance, not a guarantee that every request will take seven days.

When the notice arrives, select Download data export while signed in to the same account that requested it. The download link expires 24 hours after receipt. If you miss that window, submit a new export request rather than relying on an old link.
Keep the notice and link private. The archive can contain sensitive account information, so avoid forwarding the message or placing the link in a shared document.
What files can be in the ZIP archive?
The exact contents vary with the account and export size. OpenAI describes the archive as containing chat history and other relevant account data. These are the commonly documented items and their practical meaning:

Scheduled tasks, shared scheduled-task links, and their saved snapshots are not currently included in personal account exports, according to OpenAI’s guidance.

Do not treat the arrival of a ZIP as proof that your backup is complete. Check the archive before moving it to long-term storage.
- Confirm that the ZIP opens without an extraction error.
- Look for a conversation JSON file, either
conversations.jsonor numbered conversation files. - Open a small selection of records and check that messages, dates, and titles are readable.
- Check for folders or files associated with important uploads and other conversation assets.
- If shared conversations matter to you, look for
shared_conversations.json. - Compare a few recent and older chats that you can still see in ChatGPT with the exported records.
- Keep the untouched ZIP even if you plan to reorganize or parse the extracted files.
A missing item may reflect what the export format includes rather than a failed download. For example, scheduled tasks and their saved snapshots are specifically excluded from personal exports. If an expected conversation or file is absent and the archive otherwise opens normally, request another export and compare the results before deleting the first copy.
Where should I keep a personal backup?
Keep the original ZIP on the computer where you downloaded it only temporarily. Make at least one additional copy on a different physical device, such as a USB flash drive or an external SSD, and protect both copies from unauthorized access.

A simple organization scheme is a date-based folder such as ChatGPT-export-2026-10-26. Put the original ZIP in that folder and place extracted files in a separate subfolder so you can distinguish the source archive from working copies. The date records when the export was requested or downloaded; add a short account label if you maintain more than one personal account.

- Use a device protected by a login password or passcode.
- Store removable media in a secure place when it is not connected.
- Use the operating system’s encryption feature or an encrypted container when your threat model requires it.
- Do not upload the ZIP to a public link or share it through an unprotected folder.
- Keep the original archive read-only or otherwise unchanged after you have verified it.
Should I use a USB flash drive or an external SSD?
Either device can hold the ZIP; ChatGPT does not require a particular brand, capacity, speed, or storage product. Choose based on how often you export and how much other data you intend to retain.

The important protection is redundancy: a second device in a different location is more valuable than choosing a faster drive for a single copy.
Which ChatGPT accounts can use self-service export?
Settings-based export is available to signed-in Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and eligible ChatGPT Edu users. Edu availability can depend on administrator configuration and, in some cases, data-residency settings.

Workspace administrators may control access to data or exports. A personal Privacy Portal request does not replace the workspace owner’s process for Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare accounts.
Is exporting the same as deleting chats or changing privacy controls?
No. An export makes a copy; it does not delete the account’s chats. Deleting chats is a separate action, and the model-improvement control is separate again.

Turning off Improve the model for everyone changes how new conversations are used to improve OpenAI models. It does not remove existing saved conversations, create a downloadable backup, or alter the contents of an export that you request later.
Can I use an export to move conversations to another account?
You can upload conversations.json, or the numbered conversation JSON files from a larger export, into a new conversation in another personal ChatGPT account. ChatGPT can then use that upload as reference material.
This is not a full account migration. It does not merge accounts, recreate the old sidebar or individual chats, transfer subscriptions, move memories or custom GPTs, carry over files as native account assets, or grant access to a previous workspace. Keep the original export because the uploaded file is a reference in a new conversation, not a restoration of the old account.

The export option is missing
Confirm that you are signed in to the intended account and open Settings > Data controls again. If you use Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare, contact the workspace owner; if you use an eligible consumer account and the control remains unavailable, submit the request through the Privacy Portal.
The notice has not arrived
OpenAI allows up to seven days for delivery. Check the email address or phone number associated with the account, review spam or filtered messages, and avoid submitting many duplicate requests while the first one may still be processing.
The download link expired
The link is valid for 24 hours after the notice arrives. Once it has expired, make a new export request and download the replacement promptly.

The ZIP will not open
Download it again while signed in to the requesting account. If the replacement also fails to extract, try a different extraction utility or operating system and retain the original download for support; do not edit the only copy.

Important chats or files appear to be absent
Check whether the item is a scheduled task or a saved scheduled-task snapshot, because those are not currently included in personal exports. For other omissions, compare a second export and contact the appropriate account or workspace administrator if the data still does not appear.
How can I maintain the backup over time?
Exports are on-demand rather than a live mirror of your ChatGPT account. Make a new export after a period of important work or before deleting conversations, then preserve each original ZIP with its download date.
- Request a fresh export from the account you want to preserve.
- Download it within the 24-hour link window.
- Verify representative conversations and important files.
- Place the untouched ZIP in a dated folder.
- Copy that folder to a second, separately stored device.
- When replacing an older backup, keep the older archive until the new one has been opened and checked.
This approach gives you a recoverable personal record without assuming that an export can restore the original ChatGPT interface or workspace.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I schedule ChatGPT exports automatically?
The documented workflow describes an on-demand request from ChatGPT settings or the Privacy Portal, not a recurring export scheduler. If you need periodic copies, set your own calendar reminder and repeat the request manually.
Where are shared conversation details stored in the export?
OpenAI documents a file named shared_conversations.json for shared-conversation metadata. Treat it as metadata for shared conversations rather than assuming it reproduces every shared-link view.
Will an export include chats I deleted before requesting it?
The published guidance does not promise that previously deleted conversations will appear. Do not use a future export as a way to recover a chat you have already removed; preserve important material before deleting it.
Can I restore the ZIP directly into a new ChatGPT account?
There is no documented one-click restore. You can upload the conversation JSON to a new personal account for reference, but the old sidebar, subscriptions, memories, custom GPTs, files, and workspace permissions are not recreated.
