To move your ChatGPT history into Gemini, request a ChatGPT data export, keep the resulting ZIP file intact, and upload it in Gemini through Settings & help → Import memory to Gemini → Import chats → Add. Google supports ZIP archives up to 5 GB and allows up to five ZIP uploads per day. Processing can take up to a day. Gemini imports the text of your chats, but not images, generated files, project attachments, memories, custom instructions, subscriptions, GPTs, or workspace membership.
This guide explains the exact export and import paths, account and regional restrictions, what survives the move, how to retry an incomplete import, and when manual copying is more practical.
What do I need before exporting ChatGPT conversations?
Prepare the accounts, browser sessions, and storage needed for both sides of the transfer. Gemini’s importer is not available to every account or in every region.
- A personal Google Account: Google requires a personal account and says users must be at least 18 years old.
- Supported geography: Google’s current help guidance says the importer is unavailable for accounts in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
- An eligible account type: Work, school, and supervised Google Accounts cannot use this importer.
- Enough local storage: The ChatGPT export arrives as a ZIP archive. Keep room for the download and, if you inspect it, an extracted copy.
- Time for processing: Gemini says an import may take up to one day, so do not delete the ZIP until you have confirmed that the chats you need are present.
Use the same ChatGPT account that contains the conversations you want to export. OpenAI delivers the completed archive while you are signed in to the account that requested it.

How do I export my ChatGPT history?
ChatGPT creates a downloadable ZIP containing your account export. The request is made from ChatGPT’s settings, not from Gemini.
- Sign in to ChatGPT in a desktop or mobile browser.
- Open your profile menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Select Export data and confirm the request.
- Wait for OpenAI to prepare the archive, then download the ZIP while signed in to the requesting account.
The export is an account-data package, not a recreated copy of the ChatGPT interface. It does not rebuild the old sidebar or preserve the original separation of chats. The archive also does not migrate subscriptions, saved memories, custom instructions, custom GPTs, files, or workspace membership.
If you only need Gemini’s native importer, do not convert the download into another format. Gemini expects the ZIP itself. OpenAI’s export documentation also describes a general extraction option: after unzipping, you may see conversations.json or numbered conversation JSON files. That view is useful for inspection or for handling data in another ChatGPT account, but it is not the file format Gemini asks you to upload.
How should I protect and inspect the export ZIP?
Treat the archive as a copy of your private conversations. Keep the original ZIP unchanged as a backup before uploading anything.
- Store the original in a private location with access limited to you.
- Do not rename individual files inside the archive or rebuild the ZIP unless you are using it for a separate, non-Gemini workflow.
- If you need to verify its contents, make a duplicate first and inspect the duplicate. The export may contain
conversations.jsonor numbered conversation JSON files. - Use the intact original for Gemini’s upload. Uploading extracted JSON instead of the ZIP does not follow Gemini’s documented import path.
Because the archive can contain years of prompts and responses, check who can access the folder in which you save it. After Gemini has finished and you have verified the result, delete local copies you no longer need.

Where is Gemini’s “Import chats” setting?
Gemini’s native importer is in the settings/help menu rather than in the normal new-chat composer.
- Go to gemini.google.com and sign in with an eligible personal Google Account.
- Open Settings & help.
- Choose Import memory to Gemini.
- Under Import chats, select Add.
- Choose the ChatGPT ZIP archive from your device and start the upload.
Google documents a maximum supported ZIP size of 5 GB and a limit of five ZIP files per day. Those are importer limits for Gemini; they do not change the size or contents of the archive ChatGPT creates.
How long does Gemini take to process an import?
Google says processing can take up to one day. The upload finishing does not necessarily mean every conversation is already searchable, so allow the processing window before judging the result.
When processing is complete, imported conversations appear in Gemini’s Chats list with an imported-chat marker. Open a few older and newer conversations to confirm that the material you care about is present.
If an import is interrupted and some chats are only partially available, delete the import entry in Gemini and submit the ZIP again. Retrying the same incomplete entry is not the documented recovery path; remove that entry first, then start a new upload.

What transfers from ChatGPT to Gemini?
The transfer is primarily a text-history import. Google distinguishes the text of chats from media and files, while OpenAI describes additional account features that an export cannot migrate.

Imported text may refer to an attachment that is no longer available. That reference does not mean the attachment itself crossed over; Google explicitly says images, files, project files, and attachments from the previous AI app are excluded.
Can I move every ChatGPT conversation into Gemini?
You can submit the account export as a batch, but “everything” has a precise limit: Gemini receives the text represented in the ZIP, subject to the 5 GB archive limit and the importer’s processing. It does not receive the non-text account features and media listed above.
Large histories may take the full processing window. If you have more than one export archive to submit, Gemini permits up to five ZIP uploads in a day; do not exceed that limit while trying to divide or retry a transfer.
For conversations that depend on a file, image, or project attachment, plan a second step. Locate the original asset on your device or in the service where you stored it, then upload it directly in Gemini when you continue that conversation.

Which is better: native ZIP import or manual copy and paste?
The native importer is the practical choice for a large history because one archive handles many text conversations. Manual copying is slower but useful when you need only a few conversations or must bring a specific attachment along yourself.

Use the ZIP route when searchability across many old discussions matters. Use manual transfer when you need immediate access to a short exchange, want to edit the context before sharing it, or need to include a file in the same Gemini prompt.
What should I do if the import option is missing?
Check eligibility before troubleshooting the browser. The importer is limited to personal Google Accounts for users aged 18 or older and is unavailable to work, school, and supervised accounts. Google also lists the EEA, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom as unsupported regions.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended personal Google Account, not an organization-managed profile.
- Open Settings & help from Gemini itself and look for Import memory to Gemini.
- If the account or region is unsupported, use manual copy and paste for selected conversations instead of trying to bypass the restriction.
What should I do if Gemini rejects the ZIP?
First verify that you selected the original ChatGPT ZIP rather than an extracted JSON file. Then check the archive size: Google’s documented maximum is 5 GB.
- File is over 5 GB: The native importer does not support it as submitted. You can use manual transfer for priority conversations; do not assume that splitting or rebuilding archives will preserve Gemini’s expected format.
- You have already uploaded five ZIPs today: Wait for the daily limit to reset rather than submitting more attempts.
- The upload appears to finish but chats are missing: Allow the processing period to complete. If the result remains partial, delete that import entry and retry with the unchanged original ZIP.
How do I find, continue, or remove imported chats?
After processing, open Gemini’s Chats list and look for the imported-chat marker. Select a conversation to search its text or continue it with a new Gemini prompt.

Gemini provides deletion controls for both individual imported chats and an entire import batch. Delete a single conversation when only one item is sensitive or unwanted; delete the import batch when you need to remove the whole transfer. This does not erase the original ChatGPT account export, so remove that ZIP separately from your local storage if you no longer need it.
How should I handle conversations that used files or images?
Make a list of conversations whose meaning depends on an attachment, generated image, or generated file. The imported text may still mention the asset, but Gemini will not receive the asset through the ZIP.
- Find the original attachment or download in your local storage or the service where it was created.
- Open the corresponding imported text conversation in Gemini.
- Upload the file or image directly to Gemini and explain which earlier exchange it belongs to.
- Continue the task only after confirming that Gemini can access the newly uploaded asset.
This separate upload is also the way to restore project context: project files are excluded from the ChatGPT-to-Gemini import.

What does this export not replace?
A data export is a portability package, not an account migration. It does not recreate ChatGPT’s user interface, billing relationship, memory system, custom instructions, custom GPTs, files, or organization membership in Gemini. Preserve any settings or reference material you still need and recreate them intentionally in the destination service.

Can I upload an extracted conversations.json file to Gemini instead of the ZIP?
No. Gemini’s documented import flow asks you to select the ChatGPT ZIP itself. You can extract a duplicate to inspect files such as conversations.json, but keep the intact archive for the native importer.
Does importing chats delete them from ChatGPT?
No. The export and Gemini upload create a separate copy. Your original ChatGPT conversations remain in the ChatGPT account unless you delete them there yourself.
Why can I search an imported conversation but not open its old attachment?
