Export first, then remove both the saved memory and the material that created it. ChatGPT, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot keep personalization in more than one place: a visible memory list, conversation history, uploaded files, connected services, and inferences made from earlier chats. Turning a memory switch off usually stops future saving or use; it does not erase existing memories or conversations. The safest workflow is to save a copy, inspect each provider’s memory view, delete the remembered entry, remove its source chat or file where required, disable future personalization, and verify the result after the provider’s stated propagation period.
Labels and availability differ by plan, region, device, and workspace. The paths below reflect the interfaces and policies documented on October 26, 2026; if a label has moved, look for the equivalent Memory, Personalization, or Chat history control.
What is an AI assistant’s “memory,” and why is deleting one item not enough?
An assistant’s memory is not necessarily one database. A provider may show a concise profile while retaining the conversation, file, or connected-app record from which that profile was derived. It can also generate a new inference from old history after you remove a visible entry. Treat every layer as a separate control surface.

When a detail is sensitive, search all five places rather than assuming the memory summary is a complete inventory. The visible list is useful for editing, but it is not a guarantee that every source reference or derived signal is displayed.

How should I export my AI assistant’s memory before deleting it?
Export before making changes. Keep the copy in a location you control, and label it with the account and date so you know exactly what was preserved.
- Decide what you need to retain. An account-wide archive is useful for an audit; a plain-text list of memory entries is easier to migrate or edit.
- Save the export locally. Store it on a computer or, optionally, a USB flash drive. Protect the file because it can contain private conversations and profile details.
- Open the saved copy. Confirm that the archive or text actually contains the information you expected before deleting the online version.
ChatGPT export
Use ChatGPT’s account data-export control to request a downloadable copy of your account data before deleting anything. This is an account-wide archive rather than a memory-only file, so it can include conversations and other account records. The exact button and delivery method can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. OpenAI documents this export in its Help Center article Memory in ChatGPT (accessed October 26, 2026).
Claude memory export
Claude offers a memory-specific text backup. In chat, ask: Write out your memories of me verbatim, exactly as they appear in your memory. Save the response before editing or deleting topics. Anthropic also provides an import flow for pasted memory from another provider, but labels memory imports experimental and says they remain in active development; do not treat the text as a guaranteed, lossless account export.

Microsoft’s documented Copilot controls provide review and deletion of saved memories, but the cited support guidance does not describe a separate memory-only download. If you need a record, copy the entries from the Saved memories view or ask Copilot what it knows about you and save that response, while recognizing that a chat answer may omit hidden source references.

Use the provider’s memory page and an in-chat question. Compare the two results, then trace each important detail to its source conversation, file, or connected service.

ChatGPT
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory. The available controls depend on your account, region, platform, and workspace.
- Read the memory summary. Where the interface allows it, edit a wording, correct a detail, or delete an individual memory.
- Ask ChatGPT what it remembers about you and compare the response with the summary. A response can reveal a preference that is not presented as a separate editable item.
- For each unwanted fact, note the conversation in which you supplied it and any Library file or connected app that repeats it.
Claude
- In the current interface, open Settings > Your Claude and choose Manage beside Your memory. Older layouts may show Settings > Memory or place the control under Capabilities.
- Read the listed topics and edit or delete individual topics as needed.
- For an exact textual view, send:

Retention rules for a project or managed account can affect what remains available even after a personal topic is removed.
Microsoft Copilot
- Open Copilot settings and choose Personalization, or Chat settings > Personalization where that is the label on your account.

What do you know about me?as a second check. - If you use a work or school account, look for Chat history & work insights or a similarly named administrator-controlled setting. The consumer and Microsoft 365 surfaces do not expose identical controls.
How do I delete a ChatGPT memory completely?
Delete the saved entry and every source that can recreate it. Disabling Memory alone is not an erasure command.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Delete or correct the unwanted saved memory. If you are removing everything, use the available clear-all control rather than relying on a toggle.
- Delete the chat in which you originally shared the detail. Check both regular and archived chats; archiving is not the same as deleting.
- Remove duplicate copies from the Memory summary, Library files, and any connected app that supplied the information. If a document contains the detail, delete that file or disconnect the relevant integration using its own controls.
- Decide whether to disable Memory or Reference chat history to prevent new personalization. Turning Memory off does not delete past chats. Turning Reference chat history off schedules derived information for deletion within 30 days while leaving the original chats intact.
- Recheck the memory page and ask ChatGPT what it remembers after the change has propagated.
OpenAI says deletion updates can take time and that logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. That policy timing means you should not promise instantaneous backend erasure to yourself or anyone whose data you manage.
How do I delete a Claude memory and the conversation behind it?
Claude treats memory topics and conversations as separate objects. Deleting a conversation does not automatically remove memory entries generated from it, so perform both actions when the goal is complete removal.
- Open Settings > Your Claude and select Manage next to Your memory. If your account still uses a legacy layout, check Settings > Memory or Settings > Capabilities.
- Read the topics and delete the unwanted one, or edit it to correct an inaccurate detail.
- Delete the source conversation from the conversation list. Repeat for any other chat that contains the same personal information.
- Inspect project files and shared organizational content. Remove a source document there if it is the reason Claude can still surface the detail.
- Turn memory or chat search off in Settings if you do not want those features used for future responses. Project and organization retention rules can impose additional behavior.
- Ask Claude to write out its memories verbatim again and compare the result with your saved export and the memory-management page.
Anthropic describes memory imports as experimental and still in active development. An imported text may not reproduce every topic, ordering, or internal association from another assistant, so review it manually after migration.
How do I delete Microsoft Copilot’s saved memories?
Copilot has separate controls for saved memories and personalization inferred from chat history. Turn off saving, remove existing entries, and address chat-history personalization if the unwanted detail still appears.

- Open Copilot settings and go to Personalization or Chat settings > Personalization.
- Under Saved memories, delete individual entries or choose Delete all memories.
- Switch the Saved memories toggle off to stop new memories from being saved. Microsoft states that switching it off alone does not delete memories already saved.
- Use the Chat history personalization control to remove information inferred from earlier chats. In Microsoft 365 work or school accounts, the label may be Chat history & work insights and may require an administrator.

Microsoft warns that if Chat history is turned back on within 30 days, memories inferred from chat history can be added again. Keep that setting off during the verification period if you are trying to prevent re-creation.

Does turning memory off delete my chats?
No. Across these services, a disabled toggle generally changes future collection or use; it is not a substitute for deleting stored data. The exact behavior differs by provider.

Can I move my memories to another AI assistant?
Migration is possible as a manual transfer, but no provider promise in the documented procedures makes it lossless.
From Claude
Ask Claude for the verbatim memory text, save it, and paste it into Claude’s memory-import flow or another assistant’s profile instructions. Anthropic labels the import feature experimental, so check every imported topic for missing context or incorrect wording.
From ChatGPT
ChatGPT’s account export gives you a broad archive. Extract only the profile facts you intentionally want to carry over, remove secrets and obsolete details, and add the approved items manually to the destination assistant. An account archive is not the same as a portable memory schema.

Copy the Saved memories entries and any facts you have verified in the “What do you know about me?” response. The documented controls do not specify a direct memory-import format, so treat the transfer as a manual, selective rewrite rather than an automatic copy.
What should I do if a deleted detail still appears?
Persistence usually means another layer still contains the information, a deletion window has not elapsed, or a setting allowed the assistant to derive it again. Use this order so you can identify the cause.
- Check the visible memory view. Refresh the page, sign out and back in if necessary, and confirm that the entry is absent.
- Ask the assistant directly. Use the provider-specific question above. Record the exact wording of any remaining response.
- Search source chats. Delete every conversation, including archived or project conversations, that repeats the detail.
- Inspect files and integrations. Remove uploaded documents and connected-app copies that contain the same information.
- Review history controls. Confirm that Reference chat history, Chat history personalization, or chat search is disabled when you do not want derived personalization.
- Allow the stated window. ChatGPT documents up to 30 days for deletion of derived history information and retention of deleted-memory logs for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. Copilot documents a 30-day period in which turning history back on can recreate inferred memories.
- Check managed-account rules. A workplace, school, team, or enterprise administrator may apply retention or access policies outside your personal settings.
Do not interpret a temporary appearance in a response as proof that a deleted backend record is still present: the assistant may be repeating text from a chat you did not remove, a connected source, or a cached conversational context. Trace and remove each source before escalating to the provider.

How do I perform a final privacy check?
- Open the memory-management page again and confirm the intended entries are gone.
- Ask the assistant what it remembers about you and test a few deleted details, not just the headline item.
- Review regular and archived chats, project conversations, Library files, and connected-app permissions.
- Confirm the future-use toggles are in the state you want and note any administrator-controlled setting.
- Record the date of deletion and the provider’s stated retention or propagation period.
- After that period, repeat the memory-page inspection and the in-chat question. If the detail returns, identify which source or re-enabled history setting supplied it before deleting again.
