iA Writer can export a document as Markdown (.md), PDF (.pdf), Microsoft Word (.docx), HTML, and, on supported platforms, a project archive. Choose Markdown when the recipient or next tool needs the original plain-text syntax, PDF when the page must look the same for everyone, and Word when another person will continue editing in Microsoft Word.
The command is called Export, but its location depends on your device. On Mac and Windows, use the File menu. On iPhone, use the iOS share button, the Library’s long-press menu, or the Command Palette. The steps below cover each route and explain what survives conversion.
What is the difference between iA Writer’s Markdown, PDF, and Word exports?
Each format is optimized for a different handoff. Markdown is the source-oriented copy, PDF is the presentation-oriented copy, and Word is the editing-oriented copy.

The table describes workflow consequences of iA Writer’s documented export behavior; it is not a claim that one format is universally superior. If you need both a canonical source and a polished handoff, export the formats separately and label them clearly.

How do I export a document on Mac?
On macOS, the Export command is in the document window’s File menu and has a keyboard shortcut.
- Open the document in iA Writer.
- Choose File → Export…, or press Shift-Command-E.
- Choose the destination format: Markdown, PDF, Word, HTML, or project archive.
- Select a destination, enter or confirm the filename, and save.
Exporting Markdown gives you the document as plain text with its existing Markdown notation. Exporting PDF uses the document’s current Preview typography, while Word conversion creates a .docx file for editing in Microsoft Word.
How do I control Mac PDF typography and page furniture?
Mac PDF export takes its appearance from Preview and from the active print/PDF template. To change those controls, open Preferences → Templates → Printing & PDF Export. Mac templates can add a title page, headers, footers, and page numbers.
Set the template before exporting if the PDF needs a formal cover page or repeating page information. Because the PDF is generated from Preview, check the document in Preview first; that is the view whose typography is carried into the exported pages.
How do I export a document on Windows?
The Windows workflow uses the File menu and presents the formats supported by the Windows export dialog.
- Open the document in iA Writer.
- Choose File → Export.
- Select PDF, MS Word (.docx), HTML, or Markdown (.md).
- Choose where to save the file and confirm the export.
Windows PDF export uses the same options as printing. The export dialog provides A4 and Letter paper sizes. Template settings control whether the PDF has a title page, headers, or footers.

How should I set up a Windows PDF?
Choose A4 when the recipient or printer uses the A-series paper standard, and choose Letter when the workflow is based on North American Letter paper. Make the paper choice in the export dialog, then verify the template’s title-page, header, and footer settings before saving.

The paper-size choice is part of the PDF export/print configuration; it does not change the Markdown source. If you later need a different paper size, export another PDF with the alternate setting rather than treating the first PDF as a source document.
How do I export a document on iPhone?
iPhone offers three entry points, so you do not have to rely on one particular screen.
From the Editor or Preview
- Open the document in the Editor or Preview.
- Tap the iOS sharing button.
- Choose the export format and the destination supplied by the share sheet, then complete the save or share action.
From the Library
- In the Library, find the file you want to export.
- Long-press the file and choose Export….
- Select a format and destination, then confirm.
With the Command Palette
Open the Command Palette, invoke the export command, and select the required format. The iPhone export choices include PDF, MS Word (.docx), HTML, Markdown (.md), and Project Archive (.zip).
Using the Library route is useful when you know the file but do not need to open it for editing. Using Editor or Preview is useful when you want to inspect the content immediately before sharing.
What does iA Writer preserve when exporting to Markdown?
Markdown export is the closest representation of the iA Writer source. It is unformatted plain text, so Markdown markers remain available to the next Markdown-aware editor or repository.

- Use it when another tool must receive headings, emphasis markers, links, lists, and other Markdown notation as source text.
- Use it when you want a portable text file that is not tied to iA Writer’s visual Preview.
- Expect the receiving application to decide how that syntax is rendered; the
.mdfile itself does not carry a fixed page design.
Markdown is therefore the right choice for a technical handoff or continued writing in a Markdown workflow, not for a recipient who only wants a finished page.
How does PDF export work, and what will the recipient see?
PDF export creates a fixed, shareable rendering based on Preview and the platform’s template or print settings. The recipient sees the designed page rather than the underlying Markdown notation.
Mac PDF behavior
Mac uses the current Preview typography. The template controls can add a title page, headers, footers, and page numbers through Preferences → Templates → Printing & PDF Export.
Windows PDF behavior
Windows follows the same options as printing and offers A4 or Letter paper sizes. Windows templates control title pages, headers, and footers.
iPhone PDF behavior
On iPhone, select PDF from the share or export flow. The available format is the PDF handoff; the exact destination is then chosen through the iOS sharing interface.
PDF is the strongest option when pagination and appearance matter more than later editing. It is also the format to choose when a reviewer should comment on a stable page layout instead of working with source syntax.

What converts when I export to Microsoft Word?
iA Writer converts common document structures into Word equivalents, including emphasis, bold, strikethrough, hyperlinks, headings, unordered lists, ordered lists, and blockquotes.

- Inline markup: emphasis, bold, and strikethrough are represented as Word formatting.
- Links: hyperlinks are converted as links rather than left only as Markdown notation.
- Block content: blockquotes are converted into a Word representation of that structure.
Do not expect pixel-identical styling. iA Writer documents the structural conversion, while fonts, colors, and other visual styling should be finished in Microsoft Word. Open the resulting .docx in Word and apply the recipient’s house style, page setup, and final visual adjustments there.
Which export format should I choose for a specific handoff?
Start with what the recipient must do next, not with the format that looks best in your current editor.

iA Writer’s feature overview lists PDF and Microsoft Word export on iPhone/iPad, Mac, and Windows, but the exact menu path differs by platform. Use the platform-specific procedure above rather than assuming that a desktop shortcut exists on iPhone or that every desktop export list includes project archives.

The Export command is not where you expect
On Mac and Windows, look under the document window’s File menu. On iPhone, try the share button in Editor or Preview, long-press the file in Library, or use the Command Palette. These are separate entry points to the same general export task.

The PDF has the wrong page proportions
On Windows, revisit the PDF export dialog and switch between A4 and Letter as appropriate for the recipient or printer. On Mac, inspect the selected template under Preferences → Templates → Printing & PDF Export and verify title-page, header, footer, and page-number settings.

The PDF typography differs from the editing view
Mac PDF output follows the current Preview typography, not an arbitrary text-editor view. Check Preview and the active printing/PDF template before exporting again.
The Word file looks less polished than the iA Writer document
That is an expected boundary of the conversion: common structures are converted, but fonts, colors, and other visual styling are intended to be completed in Word. Apply the final visual treatment in Microsoft Word instead of trying to force a PDF-style appearance into the conversion step.
The recipient needs the Markdown markers
Re-export as Markdown rather than PDF or Word. PDF is designed for the rendered page, and Word is designed for editable Word structures; neither is the source-preserving choice.

How can I use the three formats together?
A practical publishing handoff often needs more than one representation. Keep the Markdown file as the source-oriented copy, create a PDF for a stable review or print copy, and create a Word file only when a Word-based editor needs to revise the text.
- Export Markdown first when preserving the source is important.
- Configure Preview and template settings, then export PDF for the fixed presentation.
- Export Word for collaborators who need to edit in Microsoft Word.
- Give each file a clear filename or folder so recipients know which copy is authoritative for their task.
This sequence prevents a designed PDF or a converted Word file from being mistaken for the original Markdown source. It also lets each recipient work in the format that matches the next step without changing the others.

Should I keep the Markdown file after creating a PDF or Word copy?
Yes. Treat the Markdown export as the source-oriented copy and the PDF or Word file as a handoff tailored to a particular recipient. Keeping both makes it easier to regenerate a page or an editable file when the document changes.
How do I choose A4 versus Letter for a Windows PDF sent internationally?
Choose the paper size used by the recipient’s printer or office workflow. If the audience spans regions, ask which standard they expect before exporting, because the paper setting is part of the Windows PDF/print configuration.
What should I inspect in a DOCX before sending it to a client?
Open the file in Microsoft Word and check heading hierarchy, list indentation, hyperlink targets, blockquotes, fonts, colors, and page layout. Structural conversion can be successful even when the visual treatment still needs Word-specific finishing.
Can I create a fixed-looking PDF and an editable Word handoff from the same iA Writer document?
