Canon Dual Pixel 3D (DP3D) Converter turns a compatible Dual Pixel RAW (DPRAW) photograph—or a supported JPEG containing Canon distance data—into either a textured 3D model or an MP4 preview. Export OBJ or GLB when someone needs to rotate, edit, embed, or animate the result; export MP4 when you need the simplest file to upload or play in a presentation. The workflow is Windows-only and compatibility is limited to specific EOS R cameras and RF lenses running current firmware. Good source capture is essential: use the recommended aperture and ISO limits, avoid C-RAW, and choose a matte subject with a simple, substantial shape.

What is Canon DP3D Converter?

Canon describes Dual Pixel 3D as “a 3D model generation technology based on Canon’s proprietary on-sensor phase-detection autofocus technology, Dual Pixel CMOS AF.” The converter uses the paired pixel information in a compatible DPRAW file to estimate depth, project the image onto geometry, and produce a textured model. On supported cameras, Canon also allows a JPEG route in which distance data is written into the JPEG; that route requires the camera’s distance-data setting and a RAW+JPEG recording mode.

The application is a converter and preview tool, not a full 3D production suite. It creates the model, lets you tune the 3D effect and background treatment, and exports standard files for later work in a 3D editor, web viewer, presentation, or video workflow.

Which cameras and lenses work with DP3D?

Canon’s September 2026 compatibility list is narrow. Use one of the following EOS R bodies, one of the listed RF lenses, and current camera firmware. An otherwise similar camera or lens is not confirmed merely because it records RAW.

What computer and files do I need?

Dual Pixel 3D Converter requires a 64-bit Windows installation. Canon lists Windows 11 version 24H2 or later; a Mac version is not listed. Leave additional working space beyond the stated minimum because source images, temporary data, and exported textures can occupy more than the final model file.

Requirement Canon specification
Operating system Windows 11 64-bit, version 24H2 or later
Processor Intel Core i series; i7 or higher recommended
Memory 8 GB minimum; 16 GB recommended
Free storage 2 GB available
Display 1024×768 minimum resolution
Supported interface languages Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Korean, and Turkish

The converter’s output types are OBJ with its accompanying MTL and JPG files, GLB, and MP4. OBJ is therefore a bundle rather than a self-contained single file, while GLB packages the model and textures into one binary file.

How should I capture an image for a reliable 3D model?

Capture quality determines whether DP3D can generate a model at all and how convincing the depth looks. Set up the camera before importing anything into Windows.

Use the supported RAW workflow

  1. On a compatible EOS R body, enable Dual Pixel RAW and record a DPRAW image.
  2. Use the camera’s sRGB color space.
  3. Turn HDR PQ off.
  4. Do not use C-RAW; C-RAW is not supported by the converter.

Use the supported JPEG workflow when appropriate

Some supported cameras can provide the depth information through a JPEG. Set the camera to RAW+JPEG and enable Add distance data to JPEGs. A normal JPEG without Canon’s distance data does not provide the input required for this path.

Stay within Canon’s exposure limits

  • Use an aperture of f/5.6 or wider when possible. Canon says model generation is unavailable above f/8.
  • Keep ISO at 1600 or lower for the recommended result. Canon says generation is unavailable above ISO 3200.
  • Keep the subject sharply recorded and avoid motion during exposure; depth estimation depends on the source image containing usable pixel information.

Choose a suitable subject

DP3D is best suited to matte or low-gloss subjects with thick, uncomplicated forms. Canon’s examples include ceramic, wood, food, leaves, rounded flowers, and large-leaf plants. Highly reflective, transparent, very thin, or intricately self-occluding objects can provide less reliable depth cues; if you need a predictable first test, begin with a solid, rounded object and even lighting.

How do I import a source image into DP3D?

Importing is folder-based rather than a cloud upload. Put the DPRAW files, or the supported distance-data JPEGs, in an accessible folder on the Windows computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Dual Pixel 3D Converter in Windows.
  2. Choose the command to import a folder and browse to the folder containing your source images.
  3. Wait for the thumbnail browser to populate.
  4. Select the image you want to convert from the thumbnails.
  5. Open 3D Model Settings before exporting so you can inspect the depth effect and background treatment.

If an image is absent from the thumbnail browser, first verify that it is a DPRAW or a JPEG recorded with Canon distance data. Then check that the body and lens are on Canon’s supported lists, that firmware is current, and that the capture did not use C-RAW, HDR PQ, an unsupported aperture, or an ISO beyond the generation limit.

How do I adjust depth and remove the background?

In 3D Model Settings, tune the depth or 3D effect until the subject’s front-to-back separation looks natural. The exact useful value depends on the subject and source image, so inspect the preview rather than applying one setting to every photograph.

You can keep the captured background or remove it. Keeping the background represents the complete photographed scene and can be useful when the context is part of the presentation. Removing it creates a subject-only model, which is generally easier to reuse in animation, an embedded web viewer, or a slide deck where the subject needs to sit on a new background.

  • Keep background: choose this when the scene itself is part of the visual story.
  • Remove background: choose this when you need a reusable isolated object or plan to composite it elsewhere.

Background removal does not turn DP3D into a detailed sculpting tool. It isolates the generated subject; fine geometry and lighting changes still belong in a downstream 3D application.

How do I export an OBJ or GLB model?

Use a model export when the recipient needs to orbit around the object, edit geometry or materials, place it in a website, or animate it. Canon provides two model formats with different file-management characteristics.

Format Files produced Best choice when Trade-off
OBJ OBJ geometry, MTL material file, and JPG texture The receiving application expects the widely supported OBJ interchange format All three files must stay together; moving or renaming one can break textures
GLB One GLB file You want a compact, self-contained handoff for a viewer, website, or editor that supports GLB The recipient must support GLB rather than OBJ
  1. With the target image open, finish adjustments in 3D Model Settings.
  2. Choose Export 3D Model.
  3. Select OBJ or GLB.
  4. Choose the destination folder and confirm the export.
  5. If you chose OBJ, keep the .obj, .mtl, and texture .jpg in the same folder when copying or uploading.
  6. Open the result in a compatible application to verify that geometry and textures load correctly before sending it to someone else.

Canon identifies Blender and other 3D software as downstream destinations. It also names Babylon.js Sandbox, HTML website viewers, and PowerPoint as examples of places where an exported model can be viewed or embedded. The receiving application, not DP3D, determines whether you can change cameras, lighting, materials, animation, or final rendering.

How do I export an MP4 preview video?

MP4 is the straightforward sharing option when the viewer only needs to watch a turntable-style preview rather than interact with a model. It is easier to upload to a website, social platform, or presentation, but it does not preserve interactive rotation or editable geometry.

  1. Select the converted image in the thumbnail browser.
  2. Open the export command and choose Export Preview.
  3. Select the destination folder and enter a filename.
  4. Choose the MP4 quality setting offered by the application.
  5. Start the export and play the finished file on the target device before uploading it.

A hands-on report from TechRadar describes High, Medium, and Low preview settings at 18, 8, and 4 Mbps respectively. Those bitrate figures are reported observations, not a Canon specification, so treat the quality labels and resulting file size as application-dependent. If a platform rejects a large upload, render a lower setting; if fine texture detail is important and the platform accepts the file, use the higher setting.

Should I share a model file or an MP4?

Your recipient needs to… Recommended export Reason
Watch a quick demonstration on common devices MP4 Most upload and presentation tools handle video without a 3D viewer
Rotate the object interactively GLB or OBJ A compatible viewer can provide orbit controls
Edit geometry, materials, camera, or lighting OBJ or GLB These preserve model data for a 3D application
Embed a compact asset in a web page GLB One file simplifies hosting and asset management when the viewer supports GLB
Use the model in a slide deck MP4 for universal playback; OBJ/GLB for an interactive workflow supported by the presentation software The choice depends on whether playback or interaction matters
Keep the complete photographed scene Either format with the background retained The background is part of the generated result
Reuse only the object in another design OBJ or GLB with background removed The isolated subject is easier to composite or animate

When sending OBJ, compress the entire folder so the material and texture files cannot be separated from the geometry. When sending GLB, still test the file in the recipient’s intended viewer; a single file does not guarantee that every viewer supports the format or all of its material features.

How do I use DP3D files in a website, presentation, or animation?

For a website

Choose GLB when your web viewer accepts it and you want one asset to host. A browser-based viewer must be added separately; DP3D only creates the file. Babylon.js Sandbox is one Canon-named way to inspect a model, while an HTML viewer can provide orbit controls for visitors.

For PowerPoint or another presentation

Use MP4 when the priority is dependable playback on presentation machines. Use OBJ or GLB only when the presentation workflow and the target version support interactive 3D objects, and test the deck on the computer that will run it.

For animation or a final render

Export OBJ or GLB, then open it in Blender or another 3D application. The downstream application supplies the controls DP3D does not: camera placement, lights, material adjustments, keyframes, compositing, and final rendering. Removing the DP3D background before export can reduce the cleanup needed when the object will be placed into a new scene.

What should I check when conversion or export fails?

The image does not appear for import

  • Confirm the file is DPRAW or a JPEG with Canon distance data, not an ordinary JPEG.
  • Confirm the camera body and lens are on the September 2026 compatibility lists.
  • Update the camera to current firmware.
  • Check that the JPEG workflow used RAW+JPEG and Add distance data to JPEGs.
  • Check that the capture did not use C-RAW.

Model generation is unavailable

  • Review aperture: Canon says generation is unavailable above f/8.
  • Review ISO: Canon says generation is unavailable above ISO 3200, with ISO 1600 or lower recommended.
  • Confirm HDR PQ was off and the camera used sRGB.
  • Try a matte, thick, simply shaped subject rather than a reflective, transparent, or very thin object.

The model has no texture or the OBJ looks broken

  • For OBJ, copy the OBJ, MTL, and JPG together; do not email only the OBJ.
  • Preserve the filenames and relative folder arrangement until the receiving application has loaded the asset.
  • Try GLB if the recipient supports it and a single-file handoff is more reliable.

The converter is slow or closes during export

  • Compare the computer with Canon’s 8 GB minimum and 16 GB recommendation for RAM.
  • Ensure at least 2 GB of free storage, plus practical headroom for source and temporary files.
  • Use a 64-bit Windows 11 24H2-or-later system and a modern Intel Core i-series processor; Canon recommends i7 or higher.
  • Close other memory-intensive applications and export one image at a time to reduce resource pressure.

What are DP3D’s limits compared with a full 3D editor?

DP3D solves the specific problem of turning one supported Canon capture into a textured depth-based model or preview. It is useful when the source image and camera setup are already compatible and you want a fast path to a shareable result.

A downstream editor is still required for advanced work. Blender or another 3D application can provide more control over topology, materials, lights, cameras, animation, compositing, and output rendering. DP3D’s background switch and depth controls are preparation steps, not replacements for those tools. The practical workflow is therefore complementary: capture and convert in DP3D, then edit or publish in the application suited to the final destination.

What is the safest end-to-end workflow?

  1. Verify the EOS R body, RF lens, firmware, and Windows computer against Canon’s requirements.
  2. Capture DPRAW with Dual Pixel RAW enabled, or use the supported RAW+JPEG distance-data workflow.
  3. Use sRGB, disable HDR PQ, avoid C-RAW, shoot at f/5.6 or wider when practical, and keep ISO at 1600 or lower.
  4. Import the source folder and select the target thumbnail.
  5. Adjust the 3D effect and decide whether to retain or remove the background.
  6. Export GLB or OBJ when the recipient needs an interactive or editable asset.
  7. Export MP4 when broad, simple playback is more important than interaction.
  8. Open the exported file in the intended viewer, editor, website, or presentation before sharing it publicly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run Canon DP3D Converter on macOS?

Canon’s listed requirement is Windows 11 64-bit version 24H2 or later, and no macOS edition is identified in the compatibility information. A Mac user would need access to a supported Windows environment to run the converter itself.

Can an ordinary JPEG produce a DP3D model?

Only a JPEG carrying Canon’s distance data is supported on the applicable camera models. A regular JPEG without that embedded distance information does not follow the documented JPEG workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can DP3D create a fully animated 3D scene by itself?

No. DP3D creates the textured model or MP4 preview and provides depth and background controls. Animation, custom lighting, camera paths, and final renders require a separate 3D application.

Why does my GLB open while my OBJ texture is missing?

An OBJ export depends on its companion MTL and JPG files, so separating or renaming those files can prevent the material from loading. GLB packages the asset into one file, which can avoid that particular file-management error when the viewer supports GLB.
