To find out whether an AI tutoring program is helping your child, check whether they can do the targeted work independently—not just whether they use the app, enjoy it, or earn a higher score inside it. Compare what they could do before using the program with what they can do afterward on similar, grade-appropriate tasks without AI hints or solutions. Then interpret any change alongside how often they used the program, what adults did to support them, and what else changed in their learning.

What counts as evidence that an AI tutor is helping?

The clearest practical sign is improvement in a skill your child can demonstrate without the tutor’s assistance. A dashboard score, completed session, or positive reaction may tell you something about the experience, but none alone shows that your child learned the material.

Start by identifying a small number of specific skills—for example, solving a particular kind of fraction problem or identifying a main idea in a passage. Record what your child can already do without help, then later give them comparable tasks without hints, worked solutions, or other AI support. Ask them to explain their reasoning or apply the skill in a slightly different problem, not only repeat an answer they have just practiced.

Keep five kinds of information distinct:

  • Learning: What the child can do independently on a relevant assessment or representative tasks.
  • Usage: Whether the child opened the program, completed sessions, and spent time on it.
  • Engagement: Whether the child participated or stayed involved during use.
  • Satisfaction: Whether the child or caregiver liked the experience.
  • Program-generated scores: The app’s own mastery ratings, quiz results, or progress indicators.

Usage and engagement can help explain how an intervention was delivered; satisfaction can help identify whether the child will keep using it. But they are not substitutes for an independent learning outcome. A child may spend a long time in an app without learning the targeted skill, while a program that is rarely used may have little opportunity to help.

How can I check my child’s learning before and after using the program?

Use a small, consistent check-in that tests the same skill before and after a meaningful period of use. The goal is not to create a high-stakes test at home; it is to see whether your child can perform the work without the tool doing the thinking for them.

1. Choose a skill and establish a baseline

Pick one or a few skills the program is meant to teach, and write down what your child can do now. Use grade-appropriate assessment material or representative problems tied to what the child is learning. If the school has relevant work samples or a suitable assessment, ask whether you can use them to understand the starting point. Do not rely only on a baseline score produced by the tutoring program itself.

2. Match the follow-up task to the skill

After the child has had a meaningful opportunity to use the tutor, try comparable tasks on the same skill without AI assistance. They need not be identical questions: a memorized answer to a repeated item is weaker evidence than applying the idea to a new example. For reading, for instance, check the skill the program targeted rather than assuming that more time in a literacy app means stronger reading overall.

3. Look for understanding, not just a correct answer

Ask the child to describe how they reached an answer, or to show how they would approach a related problem. A correct result accompanied by an explanation or successful application provides more useful evidence of independent understanding than an answer produced with hints. Keep the task appropriate to the child’s grade and the material actually taught.

4. Check whether progress lasts beyond one session

A good result immediately after practice may reflect short-term familiarity. Revisit a comparable task after a gap or during ordinary schoolwork to see whether the child can still use the skill. There is no single follow-up interval established for every tool or subject; the key is to check beyond the tutoring session and to make the timing clear when you interpret the result.

5. Keep the assessment comparable

Use tasks that are similar in difficulty and aligned with the skill being taught. If the before-and-after checks measure different things, a score change may not mean much. A grade-aligned workbook can be an optional source of independent practice or comparison tasks, but it is not a validated test of an AI tutor’s impact and cannot show by itself that the program caused improvement.

Are app usage and progress scores enough?

No. Usage shows whether the child received an opportunity to use the program; a program’s own score shows how it evaluated the child within that product. Neither independently establishes that learning improved.

Track implementation separately from learning. Note sessions completed, actual minutes of use, and any help from a parent, teacher, or tutor. Then compare those notes with results on independent tasks. Low use may help explain a lack of measurable progress; high use does not prove progress occurred.

Ask how a displayed score is generated. Does it reflect answers to questions the program selected? Can the child see hints or explanations while answering? Is the score tied to the exact skill you are checking? A product score can be useful for following activity within the program, but it is not independent validation simply because it is presented as a mastery measure.

Engagement can matter for understanding implementation, but do not convert it into an achievement claim. In two elementary-literacy randomized trials described in a 2026 Annenberg Institute working paper, nearly half of students in the control group never used the platform, while users averaged 2–5 minutes per week. Human tutors focused on engagement rather than direct instruction; the report says tutor support increased average weekly use by 1–4 minutes and engagement by 71–80%, but reading achievement did not improve. The results concern that intervention and its implementation, not every AI tutor. They illustrate why a report should state engagement and achievement separately.

What should I ask the school or tutoring company?

Ask for evidence that matches your child’s age, grade, subject, and learning goal—and for enough detail to judge what the evidence actually measures. A general claim that a program is “research-based” does not answer whether it improved independent learning for children like yours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What skill or outcome improved? Ask whether the result was a subject-specific learning measure, usage, engagement, satisfaction, or the program’s own score.
  • How was learning assessed? Was the assessment independent of the product, aligned with the curriculum and skill taught, and completed without AI hints or answers?
  • When was it assessed? Ask whether the outcome was measured only during or immediately after use, or whether students were checked again later.
  • Who was studied? Ask about age or grade, subject, location, and whether the participants resemble your child’s circumstances.
  • What was the comparison group? A result against no additional help answers a different question from a result against conventional tutoring or another learning program.
  • How was the program used? Ask about duration, actual use, and what parents, teachers, or tutors did. The availability of a tool is not the same as children receiving a substantial amount of instruction through it.
  • How strong and independent was the evaluation? Ask about the number of participants, students who left the study, the study design, and whether an independent organization reviewed the results.
  • What support does the child need? Ask who checks the child’s work, responds when they are stuck, and catches explanations or suggestions that are inappropriate for their grade.

For a fair comparison between programs, consider the same factors for each: independent learning outcomes, alignment with your child’s grade and curriculum, implementation demands, whether progress persists, and study quality. The available evidence does not establish a universal ranking of commercial AI tutoring products.

What does the research say about AI tutoring and learning?

Research offers reasons for interest in intelligent tutoring and AI-supported instruction, but the results vary with the tool, learner, subject, comparison, duration, assessment, and human support. Findings from one program should not be treated as a forecast for a different child-facing product.

Study What it examined Reported result What the result can—and cannot—tell a parent
Létourneau et al., npj Science of Learning, 2025 Systematic review of 28 K–12 intelligent tutoring studies covering 4,597 students. Findings were characterized as generally positive; effects were mitigated when intelligent tutoring was compared with non-intelligent tutoring systems. Evidence is promising but context-dependent. The review called for longer interventions, larger and more diverse samples, and further study of ethical implications; it does not predict a particular product’s effect on an individual child.
Robinson, Gormley, Ribeiro, and Loeb, Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University, 2026 Two randomized trials of an elementary-literacy platform, including human tutors whose role focused on engagement. Nearly half of control-group students never used the platform; users averaged 2–5 minutes weekly. Tutor support increased average weekly use by 1–4 minutes and engagement by 71–80%, but did not improve reading achievement. The findings show that improved engagement and usage do not necessarily mean improved achievement in this setting. They are not a result for all AI tutors or all forms of human support.
Wang et al., Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University, 2024 Randomized Tutor CoPilot study involving 900 tutors and 1,800 K–12 students in underserved communities; AI supported human tutors in mathematics. Students were reported to be 4 percentage points more likely to master topics when tutors had AI support; the increase was 9 percentage points for students of lower-rated tutors. This is evidence about AI supporting tutors in that study’s mathematics setting, not an estimate of what a standalone AI tutor will do for a child. Tutors also flagged suggestions that were not grade-level appropriate.
De Simone et al., World Bank working paper, 2025 Six-week AI-supported English tutoring program for first-year senior secondary students in Nigeria, using Copilot powered by GPT-4. The report found a 0.23 standard-deviation effect on its main English outcome and a 0.31 standard-deviation improvement on a broader assessment that also included curriculum-aligned English topics, AI knowledge, and digital skills. These results belong to that program, group of students, setting, duration, and assessments. They are not an expected effect for a child elsewhere or a different AI tutor.
Nickow, Oreopoulos, and Quan, American Educational Research Journal, 2024 Systematic review and meta-analysis of experimental PreK–12 tutoring. The overall pooled effect was 0.288 standard deviations, with variation by tutor type, grade, frequency, and whether tutoring occurred during school. This broader tutoring evidence helps show that the tutoring model and implementation matter. It is not an AI-specific effect estimate.
Kulik and Fletcher, Review of Educational Research, 2016 Meta-analytic review of 50 controlled evaluations of intelligent tutoring systems. The median reported effect was 0.66 standard deviations over conventional instruction. The review is older and includes intelligent tutoring systems that are not all current generative-AI products. Results depended substantially on whether locally developed or standardized tests were used, the comparison treatment, and implementation adequacy.

Evaluation can also produce a null result. The What Works Clearinghouse reviewed a 2025 early-literacy tutoring study in April 2026, rated it as meeting standards with reservations because of high attrition, and reported no statistically significant positive findings. That does not establish that every similar program is ineffective; it does show why study design, participant loss, and actual outcomes belong in the account of a program’s evidence.

Likewise, a project description is not a result. The Institute of Education Sciences record for the Reading Together project describes a planned evaluation of reading skills, parent–teacher relationships, home literacy practices, and parent and teacher self-efficacy. Its award period ended in 2024, but the project record should not be read as a published finding that the program improved those outcomes.

How should I interpret a claim that an AI tutor “works”?

Translate the claim into a narrower question: which children, learning which skill, compared with what, after how much use, and measured how? The more closely those details match your child’s situation, the more relevant the finding is—though it still cannot guarantee an individual outcome.

Be especially careful with claims based on different kinds of evidence. A randomized study can test a specific intervention against a comparison condition, but its result applies to the study’s participants and implementation. A review can summarize patterns across studies, but those studies may differ in the systems and tests they used. A program’s internal progress report may describe its users without establishing what would have happened without the program.

Effect sizes and percentage-point changes are not interchangeable. For example, the Tutor CoPilot report’s 4-percentage-point difference in topic mastery is not the same measure as a 0.23-standard-deviation effect on an English assessment. Neither number says how much your child will improve. Keep the original study’s outcome and context attached to the statistic rather than translating it into a personal prediction.

Evidence outside generative AI can provide context without answering the product question directly. The 2024 tutoring meta-analysis covers experimental tutoring broadly, while the 2016 intelligent-tutoring review examined systems that are not all modern generative AI. Their results help explain why tutor type, test choice, comparison treatment, grade, and implementation matter; they do not establish that a particular current AI tutor will produce the same outcome.

How can I tell whether progress came from the AI program?

Record relevant changes while you evaluate the program, and avoid crediting AI alone if your child received other new support at the same time. A new tutor, extra classroom instruction, adult help, or a change in the amount of practice could also contribute to progress.

Keep a simple log with the dates of use, completed sessions, actual minutes, adult assistance, and notable changes in school or tutoring support. Pair it with the independent skill checks rather than treating the log as proof of learning. If the program changes its content or how your child uses it, note when that happened; results from before and after a substantial change may not describe the same intervention.

When reviewing a study or provider claim, look for the same implementation information. Low participation can limit what an intervention had a chance to do, while a strong result in a highly supported setting may not transfer to a child using a tool alone at home. In a 2024 randomized study of AI support for human tutors, tutors flagged some suggestions as not grade-level appropriate—another reason to ask what adult review is part of the program rather than assuming every suggestion is suitable.

What should I do if the results are unclear?

First check whether the child had enough opportunity to use the program and whether the follow-up task actually measures the skill it teaches. If use was minimal, the trial says little about what the child might do with a more consistent opportunity; if the measure is misaligned, it says little about that skill either.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the child used the program and the independent checks show no clear change, discuss the result with the teacher or provider. Ask whether the target skill, instructional approach, or amount of support should change, and whether another form of instruction is more appropriate. Do not treat a cheerful dashboard, more screen time, or a higher in-app score as a reason to ignore a lack of independent progress.

If progress appears, look for it on more than one comparable task and beyond the tutoring session before drawing a strong conclusion. A practical check can inform a family decision, but it is not a controlled study and cannot isolate cause as rigorously as a well-designed evaluation. The useful question is whether the child is increasingly able to do the targeted work independently, with the support they actually receive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child’s school grades show whether the AI tutor is working?

Grades can be useful context, but they may reflect several subjects, assignments, and kinds of support rather than the specific skill the program targets. Ask the teacher for work samples or feedback tied to that skill, and interpret grades alongside independent tasks rather than as proof that the program caused a change.

Should I stop using an AI tutor if my child’s score does not improve right away?

One check-in may be too limited to guide that decision, especially if the child has had little opportunity to use the program or the assessment does not match its target. Review the implementation and measurement first, then discuss the child’s needs with their teacher or provider before deciding whether to adjust or stop.

Does a positive study mean an AI tutor is safe and appropriate for my child?

A learning-outcome result does not by itself answer questions about privacy, age suitability, accessibility, or the accuracy of individual explanations. Ask the school or provider what safeguards and adult oversight apply, and review the product’s policies before sharing a child’s information.
