Do not connect an AI agent to an account until you can name the exact data it will read, the tools it will call, the actions it may take, and the fastest way to revoke access. Treat the agent as a new actor—not as a harmless feature of your existing account. Start with deny-by-default, a separate identity, read-only permissions, short-lived credentials, tightly limited tools and network destinations, and human approval for irreversible actions. Then test the setup with hostile emails, web pages, documents and tool responses before allowing real data or transactions. These controls cannot make an agent risk-free, but they make its authority narrow, attributable, observable and recoverable.

What exactly are you authorizing when an AI agent connects to an account?

An AI agent combines a model with data access, software tools and the ability to cause external side effects. Connecting it to email, cloud storage, a customer system or a bank therefore creates a new path from untrusted input to sensitive information and real-world action.

Evaluate four separate questions before you approve anything:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Data: Which messages, files, records, credentials or personal details can it read or retain?
  • Tools: Which APIs, browser functions, plugins, command interpreters or retrieval systems can it invoke?
  • Actions: Can it send, delete, purchase, deploy, change permissions or expose information?
  • Control: Can you see what it did, stop it quickly and prove which identity performed each action?

A model that answers questions from a copied document has a very different blast radius from one that can search an inbox, open links, upload attachments and send mail. Your assessment should follow the most powerful combination of tools, not the marketing label attached to the agent.

Security guidance from CISA and partner agencies emphasizes limiting autonomy so agents do not receive broad or unrestricted access, especially to sensitive data or critical systems. OWASP similarly advises granting agents only the minimum tools required for a specific task.

How do I define the task and its blast radius before connecting an account?

Write a one-sentence task and a concrete inventory of resources before you open an OAuth consent screen or paste an API key. If you cannot describe the task precisely, you cannot tell whether a requested permission is excessive.

Use a permission worksheet

Item to record Specific question Example for an email triage agent
Account and owner Which account is connected, and who is responsible for it? A dedicated mailbox owned by the support team
Records Which folders, tables, files or message types are in scope? Unread support messages, excluding payroll and legal folders
Operations What must the agent do, and what is explicitly forbidden? Classify and draft replies; never send, delete or forward
Destinations Which domains, APIs or hosts may receive data? The mail provider and an approved ticketing endpoint
Duration How long is access needed, and how will it expire? A short-lived token for a scheduled triage run
Revocation What person or system can disable access immediately? The security administrator revokes the token and disables the agent identity

Reject a connection when the vendor cannot explain what data is retained, where it is processed, how long it is kept, whether it is used for training, or how you revoke access. Government guidance calls for entitlements limited to the exact resources, operations and timeframes needed. “The agent needs broad access to work” is not a usable security explanation.

Map the worst plausible chain

List the most damaging sequence the agent could complete by combining its permissions. A read-only mailbox scope may still expose password-reset links, invoices or confidential attachments. A browser tool plus an upload tool may turn a malicious page into data exfiltration. A calendar tool plus a messaging tool may disclose a private meeting even when neither permission looks critical alone. Assess the combined result, not each capability in isolation.

Which identity and credentials should an AI agent use?

Give the agent a distinct, auditable non-human identity whenever the service supports one. The OpenID Foundation states: “Agents must have distinct identities, not borrowed credentials.” A separate identity lets you attribute actions, disable the agent without locking out a person and prevent unrelated human privileges from following the agent into another system.

Prefer these credential properties

  • Short lifetime: Use expiring tokens or just-in-time grants instead of permanent keys.
  • Separate read and write identities: Keep routine analysis on a read-only identity; activate a write identity only for an approved operation.
  • Narrow audience and scope: Bind a token to the exact API, tenant, records and operations required.
  • Central storage: Put secrets in a managed secret store. Do not place them in a prompt, source file, configuration committed to version control, shell history or a long-lived environment variable.
  • Immediate revocation: Document the control-plane action that invalidates tokens, sessions, refresh tokens and delegated grants.

Never hand an agent your personal administrator token merely because it is convenient. Borrowed human credentials conceal whether an action came from you or automation and can expose every resource your account can reach. If a platform supports delegated access, configure an explicit service identity with its own owner, review date and incident contact.

What permissions should I give an AI assistant?

Start with the smallest read-only scope that can complete the task. Add one capability at a time, test it, and record why it is necessary. Write, send, delete, purchase, deploy, permission changes and disclosure of sensitive data should be disabled unless the task genuinely requires them.

  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Capability Default decision Additional control when necessary
Read selected records Allow only named folders, tables or files Field filtering, redaction and retention limits
Create a draft Allow in a separate draft area Prevent automatic send and show the complete proposed content
Send a message Deny by default Fresh human confirmation, recipient and attachment preview, rate limit
Edit or delete data Deny by default Constrain object types, keep reversible history and require approval
Purchase or transfer funds Deny except for a narrowly defined workflow Independent transaction approval and hard spending or destination limits
Change permissions or deploy code Deny from routine agents Separate privileged workflow, review and rollback
Browse arbitrary websites Deny; use an allowlist Isolated browser, blocked downloads and restricted uploads

OWASP recommends per-tool permission scoping and explicit authorization for sensitive operations. A consent dialog is not the same as a safe authorization design: the agent must be unable to reach resources outside its policy even if a user is distracted or a model is manipulated.

Can a web page or email trick the agent into unsafe behavior?

Yes. Prompt injection hides instructions in a web page, email, document, issue, image, tool description or API response. A direct attack targets the agent’s visible prompt; an indirect attack places hostile instructions in content the agent is asked to retrieve. The text may tell the agent to ignore its policy, reveal secrets, call another tool or send data to an attacker.

Microsoft advises treating all external inputs, including retrieved content and tool outputs, as untrusted by default. Keep instructions, data, memory and tool parameters separate so text found in a document cannot silently become a new command.

Reduce injection impact

  • Label retrieved text as data and pass it through a separate channel from system and developer instructions.
  • Do not let content from an email or web page modify the tool allowlist, approval policy or identity being used.
  • Require the agent to quote or summarize a source before acting on an instruction found inside it.
  • Validate tool arguments against the initiating user’s authorization and the current session, not merely against the model’s proposed JSON.
  • Strip or quarantine unexpected links, scripts, attachments and encoded instructions before they reach execution tools.
  • Keep secrets out of model context whenever possible; a model cannot exfiltrate a secret it never receives.

Memory creates another injection path. Treat anything written to long-term memory as untrusted until reviewed, give memories an owner and expiration, and prevent retrieved memories from changing security policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I review tools, plugins and side effects?

Create an explicit allowlist of tools, API methods and network destinations. For every tool, document its parameters, data returned, side effects, failure behavior and owner. Inventory model providers, plugins, retrieval sources, browser extensions and MCP servers; a change to any of them can alter the agent’s effective authority.

Separate planning from execution

Use one stage to produce a proposed plan and another, policy-enforcing stage to execute approved operations. The executor should re-check the target, parameters, user authorization and session freshness. Never rely on the model to police its own plan.

Put a confirmation gate at the point of impact

Require a fresh confirmation immediately before sending, deleting, buying, deploying, changing permissions or exposing sensitive data. Show the exact target, fields, recipients, amount, attachment list and resulting side effect—not a vague message such as “The agent wants to continue.” For high-impact operations, use an approver who is independent of the agent’s initiating session.

Permission prompts alone are not a complete boundary. A manipulated agent can pressure a user to approve an unsafe action, so the policy engine must still enforce destination, volume, object and rate limits after approval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What hostile tests should I run before going live?

Build repeatable tests that attempt to break the policy, not just tests that demonstrate a successful happy path. Run them in a sandbox with synthetic data first, then repeat after changes to prompts, tools, memory, retrieval sources, model providers or authorization rules.

  1. Prompt override: Insert text that says to ignore the task, reveal the system prompt or disable safeguards. Confirm that the agent refuses and continues the original task safely.
  2. Malicious retrieval: Place an instruction in an email, document, issue or web page that requests a secret upload or an external message. Confirm that it is treated as untrusted data.
  3. Tool misuse: Ask for a harmless task that tempts the agent to call an unrelated tool. Verify that the call is blocked before execution.
  4. Privilege escalation: Attempt to use a read-only identity to write, delete or change permissions. The authorization layer should deny the operation even if the model requests it.
  5. Memory poisoning: Add a false standing instruction to memory and test whether it can alter policy or recipient selection.
  6. Data exfiltration: Include a canary value in a document and try to send it to an unapproved domain, upload it or place it in a log. Confirm that egress controls stop the transfer.
  7. Recursive loops: Trigger repeated retries, self-calls or tool chains. Verify token, time, depth and cost limits and a clean stop condition.
  8. Unauthorized high-impact action: Simulate a send, deletion, purchase, deployment or permission change without approval. The action must fail closed and leave an audit record.

Record the input, identity, tools requested, policy decision, approval state and result. A test that passes once is not evidence that a changing plugin, prompt or model will remain safe.

How do I contain an agent while it is running?

Containment limits damage when prevention fails. Use controls at several layers because no single sandbox or model setting is a reliable security boundary.

  • Sandbox execution: Isolate the agent process, temporary files and browser profile from personal files and production systems.
  • Restrict the filesystem: Mount only the directories required for the task; make them read-only unless writing is essential.
  • Restrict network egress: Allow only approved domains, ports and API methods. Block direct connections to arbitrary hosts and metadata services.
  • Encrypt data in transit and at rest: Protect tokens, retrieved records, logs and temporary artifacts.
  • Apply limits: Set maximum tokens, retries, execution time, tool calls, records processed, upload size and transaction value.
  • Sanitize inputs and outputs: Reject malformed parameters, unexpected file types, shell metacharacters and unapproved destinations.
  • Use an emergency stop: Provide a tested kill switch that disables the agent identity, revokes sessions and blocks queued jobs.

Keep sensitive context out of prompts and logs unless it is necessary. Redact credentials, session cookies, payment data and personal information; retain enough security metadata to investigate without creating a second data leak.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I log, monitor and rehearse?

Log security metadata for every tool invocation: the agent identity, human initiator, timestamp, tool and version, target, parameters after secret redaction, approval reference, policy decision and result. Preserve correlation IDs so a message, model response and downstream API call can be reconstructed.

Alert on unusual destinations, repeated denials, sudden scope or tool changes, data-volume spikes, failed approval attempts, abnormal retry loops and activity outside the agent’s schedule. Send logs to a system the agent cannot alter, and restrict who can view the potentially sensitive content.

Periodically recertify each permission with the task owner. Remove unused scopes, stale identities, old refresh tokens and abandoned plugins. Rehearse credential revocation and account recovery so responders know which control-plane actions stop the agent and how to restore legitimate access. CISA and partner agencies emphasize that identity, authorization, monitoring and recovery must be designed together; an audit trail without a working revoke path is not containment.

How should I compare two AI agents for account access?

Compare enforceable controls, not feature counts or assurances. The safer option is the one that makes narrow scopes, independent identity, approvals, logging and revocation mandatory or technically enforceable rather than merely configurable.

Comparison axis Questions to ask the vendor
Default permission scope What can the agent access before an administrator narrows it?
Read versus write Can read, draft, send, delete and administrative actions be separated?
Agent identity Does each agent have a distinct identity with ownership and audit attribution?
Token lifetime and revocation Are credentials short-lived, and can all sessions and refresh tokens be invalidated quickly?
Approval gates Can policy require fresh approval for each high-impact operation and show exact parameters?
Sandbox and egress Can you restrict filesystem access, domains, uploads, downloads and network destinations?
Logging and export Are tool calls, policy decisions, approvals and results exportable without exposing secrets?
Retention and training use What data is retained, where is it processed, for how long, and is it used to train models?
Supply-chain controls Can you inventory, pin, review and retest models, plugins, MCP servers and retrieval sources?
Incident response What support, notification, recovery and evidence are available after misuse or compromise?

Ask for documentation and a demonstrable configuration, not a promise that the model “usually follows instructions.” If a control cannot be tested, logged or enforced outside the model’s text generation, treat it as a preference rather than a security boundary.

What is a practical pre-authorization process?

Use this sequence for a personal account, a team service or a regulated system. Keep the completed record with the account owner and security team.

  1. Write the task: State the single outcome, records, operations and completion criteria.
  2. List the blast radius: Identify sensitive data, external recipients, financial or operational consequences and the worst plausible tool chain.
  3. Choose the identity: Create a distinct non-human identity with an owner, expiry or review date and a documented revoke action.
  4. Set deny-by-default scopes: Allow only named resources and read-only methods needed for the first version.
  5. Allowlist tools and destinations: Record every API, plugin, domain, parameter range and expected side effect.
  6. Separate plan and execution: Make the policy engine validate targets and authorization immediately before a tool call.
  7. Add approvals: Require fresh confirmation for sending, deleting, purchasing, deploying, changing permissions or revealing sensitive data.
  8. Run hostile tests: Exercise injection, misuse, escalation, exfiltration, memory poisoning and loops with synthetic data.
  9. Enable containment: Apply sandboxing, egress restrictions, encryption, rate limits, retries, token limits and an emergency stop.
  10. Monitor and recertify: Export redacted audit logs, configure alerts and review whether every scope is still necessary after changes.

How does this work in common account scenarios?

Email triage

Begin with read access to a dedicated folder or label and permission to create drafts. Block sending, forwarding, deleting and opening arbitrary attachments. If sending later becomes necessary, restrict recipients or domains, display the complete message and attachments for approval, and apply a per-run rate limit.

Cloud documents

Share a project folder rather than an entire drive. Use read-only access for summarization, prevent link sharing and downloads to unapproved destinations, and keep personal, legal and financial folders outside the agent’s identity. Treat instructions embedded in documents as content to analyze, not authority to follow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Banking or payment systems

Do not give a general-purpose agent a personal banking session or unrestricted transfer token. If automation is unavoidable, use a provider-supported service identity, fixed payees or accounts, transaction ceilings and independent approval. A security key such as FIDO2 can strengthen the human account’s authentication, but it does not limit OAuth scopes, tool calls or the data an agent can access.

Best Value

  • Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.

Developer and production systems

Keep planning, code generation and deployment identities separate. Permit the agent to propose changes and run tests in an isolated environment; require a reviewed, attributable promotion step for production. Block permission changes and secret retrieval from the routine agent.

What is the final decision rule?

Connect the account only when you can answer, in writing, what the agent can read, which tools it can call, what it can change, who approved each sensitive action, where its data can go, how activity is logged and how access is revoked. If any answer depends on the model behaving perfectly, narrow the design or do not connect the account. The goal is not to predict a universal probability of compromise; it is to make an unwanted action limited in scope, detectable and recoverable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can read-only access still expose me to serious harm?

Yes. Read access can reveal password-reset links, confidential contracts, health information, payment details or trade secrets, and a manipulated agent may transmit what it reads. Limit the records and fields in scope, redact sensitive values before model processing, and enforce network egress rules even when no write method is enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I connect an agent to my personal account or create a separate one?

Use a separate account, mailbox or workspace identity when the service allows it. Delegation, shared folders or service accounts can preserve accountability without granting the agent your unrelated personal permissions, and they make shutdown less disruptive.

How often should agent permissions be reviewed?

Review them whenever the task, model, plugin, retrieval source, API scope or data classification changes, and during your organization’s normal access-certification cycle. A review should remove unused grants and confirm that the recorded owner can still revoke every credential.

What should I do if a vendor will not explain retention or deletion?

Do not connect sensitive accounts until the vendor provides clear retention, processing-location, training-use and deletion terms that match your requirements. You can test a low-sensitivity sandbox, but treat missing contractual and technical answers as an unresolved risk rather than filling the gap with a privacy assumption.

Does requiring a human approval make an AI agent safe?

No. Approval can stop an unintended side effect, but a convincing prompt injection may cause a person to approve the wrong target or content. Keep policy-enforced scope, destination and rate limits in place after approval, and show the approver the exact action that will occur.
