Evaluate Meta’s cash generation in two layers: first, reconcile its non-GAAP free cash flow (FCF) to GAAP operating cash flow; then judge whether the infrastructure spending is producing enough revenue and operating income to justify its scale. For 2025, Meta reported $115.800 billion of operating cash flow, $69.691 billion of property-and-equipment purchases, $2.524 billion of finance-lease principal payments, and $43.585 billion of FCF. The earnings release presents $72.22 billion of capital expenditures including those lease payments and rounds FCF to $43.59 billion. That cash is not automatically discretionary: Meta says its FCF measure is not residual cash available for spending, and the company does not disclose a standalone AI-capex amount. A sound review therefore tracks infrastructure, leases, liquidity, debt, investment purchases, and the operating returns from AI-enabled products together.

What does Meta’s free cash flow measure, and why does the definition matter?

Meta’s FCF is a non-GAAP measure. The company defines it by starting with cash provided by operating activities and subtracting purchases of property and equipment and principal payments on finance leases. Meta’s 2026 Form 10-K explicitly cautions that “FCF is not intended to represent our residual cash flow available for discretionary expenses.” Peer companies can make different adjustments, so comparisons are meaningful only after you align definitions.

GAAP operating cash flow is the anchor because it captures cash generated by the business before investment in long-lived assets. FCF then shows how much cash remains after the infrastructure purchases and lease principal that Meta includes in its own calculation. It is a cash-conversion indicator, not a promise that the remaining amount can be spent on buybacks, acquisitions, or other projects.

The 2025 reconciliation

Item 2025 amount How to use it
Cash provided by operating activities $115.800 billion Start with this GAAP cash-flow figure.
Purchases of property and equipment $69.691 billion Subtract owned servers, data centers, network equipment and related infrastructure purchases.
Principal payments on finance leases $2.524 billion Subtract separately when reproducing Meta’s Form 10-K reconciliation.
Free cash flow $43.585 billion Result of the company’s stated formula; the earnings release rounds it to $43.59 billion.

The arithmetic is $115.800B − $69.691B − $2.524B = $43.585B. Keep the lease-principal line visible rather than silently folding it into property-and-equipment purchases, because Meta’s filing and earnings release display the components differently.

How should I calculate Meta’s FCF from the financial statements?

Use the 10-K or quarterly filing for a reproducible calculation, and use the earnings release as a cross-check. Do not begin with net income or a headline “cash balance”; those figures answer different questions.

  1. Record GAAP operating cash flow. Take “net cash provided by operating activities” from the consolidated statement of cash flows.
  2. Record property-and-equipment purchases. Use the cash-flow line for purchases of property and equipment, which is Meta’s main owned-infrastructure investment measure.
  3. Record finance-lease principal. Pull the principal-payment amount from Meta’s FCF reconciliation. Interest expense is not the same item and should not be substituted.
  4. Subtract both investment amounts. The result is Meta’s reported FCF for the period.
  5. Reconcile rounding and presentation. The 10-K reports $43.585 billion for 2025, while the earnings release reports $43.59 billion and labels $72.22 billion of capex including finance-lease principal.
  6. Label the measure as non-GAAP. If you compare Meta with another company, rebuild the peer’s FCF using the same treatment of leases, asset sales and other adjustments before drawing a conclusion.

For quarterly work, use the same sequence every period. A quarter with unusually high working-capital inflows can lift operating cash flow even when underlying earnings momentum is unchanged, while a quarter with heavy equipment deliveries can depress FCF before the related capacity is productive.

Why does Meta report both $69.691 billion and $72.22 billion of 2025 capex?

The figures use different presentation conventions. Meta’s 10-K lists $69.691 billion of purchases of property and equipment and then subtracts $2.524 billion of finance-lease principal in the FCF reconciliation. The 2026 earnings release calls $72.22 billion “capital expenditures” including finance-lease principal. The difference is therefore the lease-principal treatment, not conflicting information about the physical build-out.

When charting a multi-year series, choose one convention and keep it consistent. A series that alternates between property-and-equipment purchases and “capex including finance leases” will exaggerate or hide year-to-year changes.

How much of Meta’s capex is going to AI?

There is no disclosed standalone AI-capex amount in the cited filings. Meta identifies servers, data centers and network infrastructure as the principal uses of property-and-equipment spending, and management says the 2026 program supports both AI efforts and the core business. Any percentage labeled “AI share of capex” is therefore an inference, not a reported company statistic.

Use total infrastructure spending as the observable input

Start with the full property-and-equipment amount and the finance-lease principal, then read management’s description of the purpose. This avoids false precision while still recognizing that AI workloads can require unusually large computing, networking and data-center capacity. Separate what is known from what is assumed:

  • Known: the cash paid for property and equipment, the finance-lease principal, and management’s stated AI-and-core-business rationale.
  • Not disclosed: a dollar amount or percentage reserved exclusively for AI training, inference or data-center capacity.
  • To be tested: whether AI-enabled products increase revenue, operating income and cash conversion enough to earn an acceptable return on the infrastructure.

Do not treat every server dollar as an AI investment

Servers and networks can support advertising delivery, messaging, recommendation systems, safety tooling and AI services at the same time. A server purchased for a mixed workload cannot be assigned credibly to AI without internal utilization data that Meta has not provided in these disclosures. The disciplined approach is to model a range of possible AI intensity and test whether the business outcome is robust across that range.

What other investing cash uses should be included in the analysis?

Capex is not Meta’s only use of investing cash. In 2025, the company also spent $18.33 billion on non-marketable equity investments and made $10.05 billion of net purchases of marketable securities. These outflows reduce cash, but they do not create owned data-center capacity and should not be merged into a capex percentage.

2025 investing item Amount Economic interpretation
Purchases of property and equipment $69.691 billion Owned physical infrastructure such as servers, data centers and network assets.
Finance-lease principal payments $2.524 billion Principal component of financed infrastructure use; included in Meta’s FCF subtraction.
Non-marketable equity investments $18.33 billion Investments in private companies or other equity interests; different risk and liquidity from capex.
Net purchases of marketable securities $10.05 billion Portfolio allocation that consumes cash but remains a financial asset rather than operating capacity.

For a cash-availability question, include all of these outflows in a broader “cash invested” view. For an infrastructure-return question, keep the equity and securities purchases in separate lines so that a large portfolio allocation does not make AI infrastructure look more expensive than it is.

Can Meta fund $100 billion-plus annual capex without taking on more debt?

Meta has substantial liquidity, but the disclosures do not establish that it can fund every future capex plan solely from internal cash. At December 31, 2025, Meta reported $81.59 billion of cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities and $58.74 billion of long-term debt. It also disclosed approximately $103.77 billion of leases not yet commenced, mostly for data centers, colocations and network infrastructure, with expected starts from 2026 through 2030.

Those figures show why a “cash balance versus capex” test is incomplete. Securities can be sold, operating cash flow can grow or shrink, lease commitments can substitute for upfront ownership, and debt can be refinanced. Conversely, the lease commitments represent future claims even before the related facilities begin operating.

Compare the 2026 plan with cash generation, not just cash on hand

Meta initially guided to approximately $115 billion to $135 billion of 2026 capital expenditures to support AI efforts and the core business. After the first quarter, the Associated Press reported that the range had risen to $125 billion to $145 billion, citing component pricing and additional data-center costs. Treat the earlier range as superseded planning context and the later range as a reported update, not as a guaranteed final spend.

If 2025 FCF of $43.585 billion were held constant purely for an illustration, the later capex range would exceed that FCF by roughly $81.4 billion to $101.4 billion before considering other investing outflows, working-capital changes, buybacks, acquisitions or financing. This is not a forecast: 2026 operating cash flow may differ materially, and Meta said available funds, operating cash flow and financing would cover its commitments.

Track the funding stack

  • Operating cash flow: measure whether cash from the advertising and family-of-apps businesses is growing faster than infrastructure spending.
  • Cash and securities: distinguish immediately available liquidity from strategic or restricted investments.
  • Debt: monitor new borrowing, maturities and interest costs alongside the existing $58.74 billion of long-term debt.
  • Leases: add commenced and not-yet-commenced obligations to the funding picture; the $103.77 billion disclosed commitment is concentrated in infrastructure.
  • Share repurchases and other investing: include them when asking whether total cash commitments can be met without external funding.

How can I tell whether AI infrastructure is earning an adequate return?

Because Meta does not disclose AI-only capex, evaluate the investment through company-wide operating results and explicit capacity signals. The key question is not whether spending is large; it is whether incremental infrastructure supports durable growth that exceeds its depreciation, lease and financing burden.

Test What to compare each quarter What a favorable result looks like
Cash-flow growth versus capex growth Operating cash flow and FCF growth against property-and-equipment purchases and lease principal. Cash generation begins to keep pace with, or outgrow, the infrastructure step-up.
AI-enabled revenue Revenue or monetization indicators that management attributes to recommendation, generative-AI or other AI features. Additional revenue is visible without relying on an invented AI-capex allocation.
Operating income and margin Operating-income growth after higher depreciation, data-center costs and operating expenses. Operating income grows even as infrastructure costs rise; Meta said its year-end release expected 2026 operating income to exceed 2025 despite the investment step-up.
Depreciation and lease burden Depreciation expense, finance-lease principal and future lease starts. Capacity additions do not create a sustained margin squeeze relative to the growth they enable.
Liquidity and capital allocation Cash, securities, debt, leases, repurchases and other investing commitments. Funding remains flexible under weaker advertising or slower AI monetization.
Downside sensitivity Stress cases for ad pricing, regulation and delayed AI adoption. The balance sheet can absorb a slower-payback scenario without forcing pro-cyclical borrowing or asset sales.

Use trailing twelve-month figures for trend analysis and quarter-specific figures for inflection points. A single quarter can be distorted by delivery timing, lease commencements or working-capital movements; a multi-quarter pattern is more informative about returns.

What did the 2026 quarterly FCF update reveal?

The Associated Press reported Meta’s second-quarter 2026 FCF at $784 million, down 91% from $8.55 billion a year earlier. The comparison demonstrates how quickly FCF can compress when infrastructure spending accelerates or cash generation changes. It does not, by itself, prove that AI investments are failing: the result must be read with the quarter’s operating cash flow, equipment deliveries, lease payments and revenue performance.

Use this kind of quarterly release as a trigger to refresh the model rather than annualizing one result. Reconcile the company’s exact definition, check whether the capex range changed, and update debt and lease commitments before changing a long-term view.

How do I build a practical Meta cash-investment worksheet?

A useful worksheet separates reported facts from assumptions so that an inferred AI-return case cannot be mistaken for company guidance.

  1. Create a reported-data block. Enter operating cash flow, property-and-equipment purchases, finance-lease principal, FCF, cash and securities, long-term debt, equity investments, marketable-securities purchases and lease commitments.
  2. Reconcile FCF independently. Calculate operating cash flow minus property-and-equipment purchases minus finance-lease principal and compare the result with Meta’s reported FCF.
  3. Add a capex-convention column. Keep “property and equipment” separate from “capex including finance-lease principal” so the $69.691 billion and $72.22 billion figures are never mixed.
  4. Add a forward-guidance block. Record the initial $115 billion–$135 billion 2026 range and the later $125 billion–$145 billion reported range with their dates and source descriptions.
  5. Build operating scenarios. Vary operating-cash-flow growth, capex, lease starts, advertising conditions and AI monetization; do not enter an AI-capex percentage as if it were reported.
  6. Review every earnings release. Replace estimates with the latest quarterly figures and note whether guidance, debt, leases or capital-allocation priorities changed.

What are the most common mistakes when judging Meta’s AI spending?

  • Calling FCF discretionary cash. Meta expressly says its measure is not residual cash available for discretionary expenses.
  • Subtracting lease principal twice. This happens when a model uses the $72.22 billion capex figure and then also subtracts the $2.524 billion lease-principal amount.
  • Using the wrong capex denominator. Decide whether the series measures owned property-and-equipment purchases or capex including finance leases.
  • Inventing an AI percentage. The filings do not provide a standalone AI-capex split.
  • Ignoring non-capex investing. The $18.33 billion of non-marketable equity investments and $10.05 billion of net marketable-securities purchases affect cash availability even though they are not infrastructure.
  • Comparing cash to capex without leases. The approximately $103.77 billion of not-yet-commenced leases create future obligations that a cash-balance snapshot omits.
  • Treating guidance as a result. The $115 billion–$135 billion and $125 billion–$145 billion ranges are plans that can change with component prices, data-center costs and operating conditions.
  • Overreacting to one quarter. The reported $784 million of second-quarter 2026 FCF shows volatility; it is a data point to reconcile, not a complete investment thesis.

What is the bottom-line evaluation?

Meta generated strong 2025 operating cash flow, but its infrastructure program absorbed most of it: $115.800 billion of operating cash flow became $43.585 billion of FCF after property-and-equipment purchases and finance-lease principal. The central uncertainty is not the arithmetic; it is the return on a rapidly expanding build-out whose AI share is undisclosed. Judge the program by recurring cash conversion, operating-income growth, depreciation and lease load, liquidity and downside resilience. Refresh those measures after every earnings release, especially as 2026 capex guidance has moved into a $125 billion–$145 billion range and quarterly FCF has shown sharp swings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use the cash-flow statement or the earnings release for Meta’s FCF?

Use the cash-flow statement and 10-K reconciliation to build the calculation, then use the earnings release as a rounded cross-check. The two documents can label lease-inclusive capex differently, so the reconciliation prevents a presentation difference from becoming a modeling error.

How should marketable-securities purchases affect a Meta cash runway model?

Show them as a separate investing outflow and include them in total cash-uses scenarios. Do not classify them as AI infrastructure, because they remain financial-asset purchases rather than owned operating capacity.

What does a large future lease commitment change in an AI-investment model?

It shifts part of the infrastructure funding burden into future contractual payments instead of the current property-and-equipment line. Add commencement timing, principal and related operating costs to downside cases so available cash is not overstated.

How often should Meta’s AI-capex thesis be updated?

Update it with every quarterly earnings release, not only when the annual report arrives. Recheck the FCF reconciliation, capex guidance, operating income, liquidity, debt and lease disclosures because any one of those can change the funding and return picture.
