The best high-performance computing (HPC) system is not the one with the highest advertised FLOPS. It is the system that completes your representative jobs within the required time, quality, reliability, energy, and cost limits. Evaluate candidates by running the same software, models or solvers, data, topology, and measurement procedure on each one. Start with an explicit procurement decision and acceptance criteria; isolate compute, memory, communication, and storage with focused tests; then confirm the result with end-to-end training, inference, simulation, or analytics workflows. Include scaling efficiency, failures, power and cooling, security, support, capacity, and total cost per useful result before selecting a configuration.

What decision should an HPC benchmark support?

Write down the decision before choosing a benchmark. A test is useful only if its result changes a purchase, deployment, scheduling, or capacity decision. Microsoft’s HPC guidance summarizes the principle: “Don’t choose a production configuration from a single peak metric.”

Define the workload portfolio

List the jobs the system must run during its expected life, not just a convenient demonstration. Classify them as distributed model training, batch or interactive inference, simulation, molecular dynamics, weather or climate modeling, computational fluid dynamics, genomics, data analytics, or a mixed multi-user service. For each class, record the model or solver, dataset size, precision, parallelism, typical and maximum job size, and workflow stages.

Set measurable acceptance criteria

Turn requirements into pass/fail or ranked targets before testing. Typical criteria include:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Time to reach a target model quality or simulation result.
  • Samples, tokens, requests, or completed cases per second.
  • Maximum acceptable latency and queue-to-completion time.
  • Minimum useful scale and scaling efficiency as nodes or GPUs are added.
  • Availability, checkpoint and recovery limits, and an acceptable failure rate.
  • Energy, facility, and budget boundaries.
  • Required concurrent users, datasets, tenants, or scheduled jobs.

Also define the cost boundary: purchase or rental cost, networking and storage, software and support, power and cooling, administration, and the cost of failed or repeated runs.

How do I characterize an HPC system before benchmarking it?

Record the complete hardware and software topology. Two systems with the same GPU count can behave very differently when PCIe lanes, NUMA placement, GPU-to-NIC affinity, or storage paths differ.

Hardware inventory

Area Record Why it matters
CPU Model, socket count, core and thread count, clock policy, NUMA layout Controls serial sections, preprocessing, MPI ranks, and host-side data loading.
System memory Capacity, channels, type, configured frequency, measured bandwidth Determines whether large datasets and memory-bound solvers stay fed.
GPU or accelerator Model, count, memory capacity, memory bandwidth, precision modes, partitioning mode Capacity can determine whether a model fits; bandwidth and precision determine throughput.
GPU interconnect Links between GPUs, switch layout, link generation, peer-access mode Collectives and model-parallel traffic can dominate training time.
Network NIC speed, count, topology, RDMA support, GPU-to-NIC affinity, oversubscription Controls distributed communication latency and bandwidth.
Storage Local and parallel systems, usable capacity, throughput, latency, IOPS, metadata rate, checkpoint path Data loading, startup, small-file scans, and checkpoints often expose storage limits.
Facility Power delivery, cooling, rack density, thermal limits, throttling behavior A system that cannot sustain its rated performance is not a production solution.
Platform software OS image, drivers, firmware, libraries, containers, scheduler, compiler, virtualization or partitioning Software versions and isolation modes can change both performance and reproducibility.

NVIDIA notes that PCIe configuration and GPU-to-NIC affinity should be selected for the target workload. Capture a topology report and the exact affinity settings rather than relying on a product name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a topology record

Save diagrams or machine-readable output for NUMA domains, PCIe switches, GPU peer links, NIC placement, storage mounts, and scheduler partitions. Record whether jobs use bare metal, containers, virtual machines, or hardware partitioning. A later performance change is much easier to explain when the original placement is known.

Which benchmarks reveal compute, memory, network, and storage limits?

Use complementary tests. Synthetic benchmarks isolate a resource; application tests establish whether that resource matters to your jobs.

Core benchmark families

Resource or question Useful test Primary measurements
Sustainable host-memory bandwidth STREAM Read, write, copy, and triad bandwidth; variation across NUMA placement.
Dense floating-point capability HPL Achieved floating-point rate, problem size, efficiency, and scaling.
Sparse linear algebra HPCG Performance when memory access and communication dominate dense arithmetic.
MPI communication OSU Micro-Benchmarks Point-to-point latency and bandwidth, message-size curves, and collectives.
GPU collectives NCCL tests All-reduce, all-gather, broadcast, and reduce-scatter bandwidth and scaling.
Standardized AI cases MLPerf Training and Inference Time to target quality, throughput, latency, and declared system configuration.
Production behavior Your actual applications and workflows End-to-end completion, quality, utilization, stalls, failures, and cost.

Run the synthetic tests at the problem sizes and process or GPU counts your applications use. A small test can fit in cache or avoid the network path that limits a real job.

Interpret peak results carefully

HPL or a vendor’s peak FLOPS result describes a narrow dense-linear-algebra case. It does not establish performance for sparse solvers, data-heavy pipelines, communication-heavy training, or interactive inference. Use peak results to identify an upper bound or a hardware anomaly, never as the production decision by themselves.

How should AI training systems be benchmarked?

For training, measure progress toward the required model quality, not only a kernel rate. A faster run that reaches a different quality target or fails to reproduce the expected result is not an improvement.

Prepare a fixed training case

  1. Pin the model revision, tokenizer, dataset revision, preprocessing, precision, optimizer, batch-size policy, and target quality.
  2. Record the backend, framework, compiler, container image, drivers, libraries, hardware, network mode, and storage path.
  3. Specify node and GPU count, process placement, communication settings, checkpoint interval, and random-seed policy.
  4. Define warm-up treatment and the measurement window. Exclude one-time setup only when production would also exclude it, and report startup separately.
  5. Run enough repetitions to report a median and distribution, not a favorable single run.

Metrics that explain training performance

  • Time to target quality and total wall-clock time.
  • Samples or tokens per second, per GPU and for the complete job.
  • Scaling efficiency from one device to the planned maximum scale.
  • GPU utilization, memory capacity and bandwidth utilization, and host CPU utilization.
  • Communication fraction, collective time, and overlap between communication and computation.
  • Data-loader wait time, storage-read throughput, cache-hit behavior, and preprocessing time.
  • Checkpoint duration, checkpoint size, restart time, and lost work after interruption.

High average GPU utilization can hide a bottleneck if the job is waiting during synchronization or input stalls. Break utilization into compute, communication, input, and idle intervals.

How should AI inference systems be benchmarked?

Inference is a service-level problem: latency, concurrency, quality, and capacity must be measured together. A high single-request throughput can be unusable if tail latency violates the service objective.

Use realistic request profiles

Define prompt or input-length distributions, output-length distributions, streaming behavior, batching policy, concurrency levels, cache state, and error handling. Test both a cold start and a warmed service. Record model-load and initialization time separately from steady-state serving.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Report these inference metrics

  • Time to first token for streaming generation, plus inter-token latency.
  • End-to-end request latency, including suitable percentile values such as median and tail latency.
  • Tokens, images, records, or requests per second at each concurrency level.
  • Startup, model-load, and scale-out time.
  • GPU memory use, cache-hit behavior, batching efficiency, and capacity headroom.
  • Error, timeout, and rejected-request rates.
  • Quality or accuracy under the chosen quantization and serving settings.

NVIDIA’s benchmark-provenance requirements are a useful checklist: preserve the model, tokenizer, backend, container, hardware, network mode, storage path, prompt and output profiles, concurrency, cache state, and software versions with every result.

How do I benchmark research applications and complete workflows?

Run the actual solvers, datasets, and workflow stages used by the research group. A system that wins a kernel test can lose at the workflow level because of preprocessing, metadata operations, queueing, checkpointing, or post-processing.

Measure the full critical path

  1. Stage or retrieve the input data.
  2. Preprocess, partition, and distribute data.
  3. Run the solver, simulation, training, or analytics computation.
  4. Write checkpoints and intermediate results.
  5. Perform post-processing, visualization, validation, and archival.
  6. Include scheduler wait time when the decision concerns user-visible completion rather than isolated node speed.

EuroHPC distinguishes application, workflow, and system benchmarks. Use all three levels when a workflow contains multiple resource regimes. For example, a simulation may be compute-bound during the solver, network-bound during halo exchange, and storage-bound during checkpoints.

Classify the limiting resource

  • Compute-bound: arithmetic units are busy and memory, network, and storage have headroom.
  • Memory-bound: achieved bandwidth or capacity limits progress, with stalled arithmetic units.
  • Communication-bound: synchronization, collectives, or latency dominate as scale increases.
  • Storage-bound: reads, writes, metadata, or checkpoint traffic leave accelerators waiting.
  • Capacity-bound: the model, dataset, or concurrent jobs do not fit without reducing batch size or spilling to slower tiers.

Change one variable at a time—such as batch size, GPU count, storage path, or network mode—to verify the diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can two HPC systems be compared fairly?

Hold everything constant except the system under test. ITU-T F.748.18 emphasizes practical, fair, scalable, and repeatable AI benchmarks with stated hardware and software environments.

Report medians and distributions, with the number of repetitions and outliers. Keep raw logs, profiler traces, power records, and quality checks alongside summarized results. If a software or hardware setting changes, start a new comparison set rather than mixing results.

What scaling tests show whether a cluster will grow with demand?

Measure both strong scaling (a fixed problem completed faster) and weak scaling (a proportionally larger problem completed in roughly the same time). Include the smallest practical job and the largest planned job.

Calculate scaling efficiency

For strong scaling, a simple efficiency measure is (T1 / (N × TN)) × 100, where T1 is the one-unit runtime, TN is the runtime on N units, and the units are GPUs, nodes, or another declared resource. State the baseline and keep the workload, quality target, and input data fixed. Efficiency can fall because of communication, synchronization, load imbalance, I/O, or scheduler placement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test multi-user behavior

Run representative jobs concurrently. Measure per-job slowdown, queue delay, interference in shared storage and network, fairness, and whether service-level latency remains acceptable. A benchmark that uses an otherwise idle cluster can overstate production capacity.

How should energy, reliability, security, and cost enter the decision?

Performance is only one part of an HPC service. Include the operational conditions that determine whether results can be delivered repeatedly.

Energy and cooling

Measure facility power where possible, not only accelerator-board power. Record energy per completed training run, simulation case, or useful inference result; average and peak draw; thermal throttling; and cooling requirements. A faster configuration can have a lower energy per result, while a high-power system may require unavailable rack capacity or electrical upgrades.

Reliability and recovery

Inject or observe realistic interruptions where safe: node loss, network disruption, storage errors, scheduler preemption, and power events. Record failure frequency, detection time, restart time, checkpoint overhead, lost work, and whether the application produces a valid result after recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security and isolation

For sensitive models or datasets, evaluate identity and access control, tenant isolation, encryption, logging, image provenance, secrets handling, and recovery. NIST’s HPC security overlay treats HPC as infrastructure for large-scale simulation, data analysis, and AI/ML training, so security controls must cover both compute and data paths. Verify whether virtualization, containers, GPU partitioning, and shared filesystems meet your threat model.

Use a complete cost model:

  • Capital or rental charges for compute, network, storage, and facility changes.
  • Software licenses, support contracts, administration, and monitoring.
  • Electricity, cooling, space, and connectivity.
  • Capacity lost to failures, maintenance, queueing, and idle reservations.
  • Cost of reruns, checkpoint storage, and data movement.

What comparison scorecard should procurement use?

Weight the axes according to the workload portfolio rather than using equal scores. A practical scorecard includes:

Axis Evidence to enter
Sustained application throughput Median end-to-end rate and completion time on representative jobs.
Time to solution or quality Wall-clock time with validation that the output meets the target.
Memory Capacity, bandwidth, utilization, and headroom at planned scale.
Interconnect Latency, bandwidth, collective efficiency, and topology fit.
Storage Throughput, latency, IOPS, metadata rate, checkpoint and restart time.
Scaling Strong and weak scaling curves, plus multi-user interference.
Inference service Latency distributions, concurrency, throughput, startup, and errors.
Energy Power, cooling, thermal stability, and energy per useful result.
Reliability Failure, recovery, checkpoint, and maintenance evidence.
Software and support Driver and library maturity, containers, scheduler, updates, and response commitments.
Capacity and economics Usable capacity, quota policy, expansion path, and total cost per result.

Set minimum gates for non-negotiables such as memory capacity, security, or latency, then rank systems on the remaining weighted criteria. This prevents a low price or impressive peak score from compensating for a failed requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What common benchmarking mistakes produce misleading results?

Choosing a winner from one peak number

Peak FLOPS, a single kernel, or a vendor-selected model can omit memory, communication, I/O, and quality constraints. Require application and workflow evidence before accepting the result.

Changing several variables at once

Upgrading the GPU, driver, container, batch size, and network mode together makes the cause of an improvement unknowable. Establish a baseline and change one factor per diagnostic experiment.

Ignoring data movement and startup

Warm caches, preloaded models, and local test data can hide production loading, metadata, and model-start costs. Report cold and warm behavior separately.

Reporting only averages

Mean latency can conceal tail failures, and mean throughput can conceal job-to-job variation. Keep distributions, failed runs, and quality checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Benchmarking an idle cluster

Shared storage, network links, and scheduler capacity behave differently under concurrent use. Include a multi-user scenario that matches expected demand.

Failing to verify the result

A short runtime is not useful if the model misses its quality target, the solver changes numerical behavior, or a checkpoint cannot restart. Validate outputs and reproducibility as part of the benchmark.

Which resources help teams build a repeatable methodology?

A systems benchmarking textbook such as Systems Benchmarking: For Scientists and Engineers (Springer, 2025, ISBN 978-3-031-85633-4) covers metrics, workloads, measurement, AI and machine-learning benchmarks, scalability, storage, and energy efficiency. High Performance Computing: Modern Systems and Practices, 2nd Edition (Morgan Kaufmann/Elsevier, 2025, ISBN 978-0-12-823035-0) covers architecture, GPU accelerators, storage, machine learning, and practical supercomputing. SPEC provides vendor-neutral performance and energy-efficiency benchmark suites. Use these resources to design tests, while keeping final acceptance tied to your own applications and operating constraints.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many repetitions should an HPC benchmark use?

Use enough repetitions to expose normal variation and report the median, spread, and failed runs; the exact count depends on runtime and volatility. Long jobs may need fewer repetitions than short latency tests, but every test should state its count and warm-up policy.

Should I benchmark on cloud HPC or owned hardware?

Benchmark the environment you will actually operate, including its instance type, network, storage, scheduler, and billing model. If both are candidates, use identical workload artifacts and compare completion cost, queue behavior, data-transfer charges, and operational controls rather than raw node speed alone.

How do I test whether a model fits in GPU memory?

Measure peak allocation during initialization, forward and backward passes, optimizer state, communication buffers, and checkpoint operations at the intended batch and sequence lengths. Leave headroom for runtime libraries and concurrency; a model that barely fits can become unstable when requests or jobs overlap.

What should a benchmark report contain for audit purposes?

Include hardware topology, software and container digests, code and dataset revisions, commands or scripts, environment variables, allocation details, run timestamps, raw logs, profiler and power data, quality checks, and the rule used to summarize results. Preserve failed runs and changes from the baseline so another team can reproduce the comparison.
