Compare Bitcoin ETFs by looking beyond the stated fee: check trading spreads and dollar volume, compare share prices with net asset value (NAV), and assess how the product tracks its named bitcoin benchmark over matching periods. These products are often structured as spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs), and the “ETF” label does not necessarily mean they are registered investment companies with the same protections as conventional mutual funds or ETFs.

How do I compare Bitcoin ETF fees?

Start with the fee disclosed by the issuer, but make sure you are comparing the same measure. A sponsor fee or expense ratio is an ongoing cost; it is not the full cost of buying, selling, or holding shares. Brokerage charges, bid-ask spreads, market impact, and other expenses can also matter. Check the current prospectus and any fee waiver, including when a waiver expires.

As of October 4, 2026, the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) product page lists a 0.25% sponsor fee. In a Grayscale issuer comparison using data through February 28, 2026, Grayscale Bitcoin Trust ETF (BTC) is listed at a 0.15% expense ratio and IBIT at 0.25%. The difference is 0.10 percentage point per year, calculated from those two stated figures, before other costs. Grayscale warns that brokerage fees and other expenses may apply. The figures are not a current, market-wide fee ranking: verify both products’ current documents before comparing them. iShares IBIT product page; Grayscale comparison filed with the SEC; Grayscale BTC communication dated September 15, 2025.

How liquid is a Bitcoin ETF?

Liquidity is not captured by a single number. Use dollar volume to gauge recent trading activity, then look at spreads and premiums or discounts to NAV to understand the conditions in which shares have traded. Average volume is historical; it does not guarantee that a particular order will fill quickly or at a favorable price.

Bid-ask spread

The bid is the best displayed buying price and the ask is the best displayed selling price. The difference is the spread, an immediate trading cost when crossing from one side of the market to the other. Compare a median or average spread over the same window and note the measurement date. Spreads can widen when markets are volatile or around periods when U.S. trading is closed.

For a dated example, iShares reported IBIT’s 30-day median bid-ask spread as 0.02% on October 2, 2026. This is a historical statistic, not a quote or a guarantee for a future order. iShares IBIT product page.

Dollar volume

Dollar volume expresses the value of shares traded and can be more useful than share count when comparing funds with different share prices. Grayscale’s issuer comparison, using Bloomberg data for the 30 trading days through February 28, 2026, reported average daily volume of 5,666,453 shares and $183,541,001 for BTC, versus 77,335,236 shares and $3,256,813,517 for IBIT. These are historical observations from a comparison published by Grayscale, an issuer with a commercial interest; they do not establish execution quality for every trade or make a market-wide ranking. Grayscale comparison filed with the SEC.

Can a Bitcoin ETF trade below its net asset value?

Yes. NAV represents the value of a trust’s underlying assets per share, while the exchange price is set by supply and demand. Shares may trade above NAV at a premium or below NAV at a discount. IBIT’s annual filing explicitly says its shares may trade “at, above or below their NAV.” Compare average premiums or discounts and their range over the same period; a single observation does not show whether deviations are persistent. IBIT annual filing for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025.

A share price close to NAV is not the same thing as accurate long-term tracking of bitcoin. NAV deviation concerns the traded share price versus the trust’s per-share asset value. Tracking concerns how the trust’s performance compares with its stated benchmark over time.

What does Bitcoin ETF tracking error mean?

Tracking evaluation asks how closely a product’s NAV performance follows its benchmark over a chosen period. Use matching start and end dates, align valuation times, identify the exact index and its pricing methodology, and account for expenses. Comparing different benchmarks or different market closes can make the result misleading.

Grayscale’s February 28, 2026 comparison identifies CoinDesk XBX for BTC and CME CF BRRNY for IBIT, with different pricing approaches. It is an issuer-produced comparison, not an independent ranking. Do not treat its claims about relative tracking or pricing as a universal conclusion. The available comparison does not establish that either fund tracks better for every period or investor. Grayscale comparison filed with the SEC.

Why Bitcoin trading hours matter

Bitcoin markets operate around the clock, while U.S. exchange-traded shares trade during exchange hours. IBIT’s filing warns that developments in Bitcoin markets outside Nasdaq trading hours may not be reflected in the share price until Nasdaq reopens. At reopening, the share price can gap, and spreads or premiums and discounts may widen. This timing difference is one reason a daily comparison of share price and bitcoin alone may not tell you how well NAV tracked the benchmark. IBIT annual filing for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025.

What should I check before choosing a Bitcoin ETP?

  • Current costs: Compare the same disclosed fee measure, check waivers and their expiry, and account for trading costs and other expenses.
  • Trading conditions: Review spread statistics and average daily dollar volume with their dates and measurement windows; neither guarantees a particular execution.
  • NAV relationship: Check premiums and discounts over comparable periods, including the range rather than only a single day.
  • Tracking basis: Identify the named benchmark, pricing method, dates, valuation time, and whether returns are before or after fees.
  • Structure and disclosures: Read the prospectus for custody, trading and creation/redemption details, and the product’s legal status.

IBIT and BTC are exchange-traded products but are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940, so they do not have the same protections as registered mutual funds or ETFs. The filing and prospectus explain the structure and risks; do not assume that a product described casually as an “ETF” has the conventional registered-fund status.
