Evaluate an AI ETF by examining three things together: what the fund actually owns, what you pay after all costs, and how much of the portfolio depends on a small group of companies or related technology businesses. Start with the latest prospectus, shareholder report, and dated holdings file; then measure top-five and top-ten weights, sector and country exposure, overlap with your existing investments, expense ratio, trading costs, liquidity, and tracking results. A long holdings list does not guarantee diversification, and a low expense ratio does not make a narrowly concentrated fund suitable for every portfolio.

The process below gives you a repeatable way to compare AI ETFs without relying on the marketing label. It also shows how to interpret an 80% investment policy, revenue-based inclusion rules, active management, and the practical risks that do not appear in a headline fee figure.

What should you look at first when evaluating an AI ETF?

Read the fund’s primary documents before looking at rankings or promotional descriptions. The prospectus explains the mandate, risks, fees, index or management process, and investment restrictions; the summary prospectus gives a shorter version; the shareholder report shows how the fund has actually been run; and the current holdings file reveals the positions and weights at a specific date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Investor.gov advises reviewing the prospectus and shareholder report before investing. Those documents are normally available from the fund’s website or through the SEC’s EDGAR database. Treat the date on each document as part of the data: a holdings file from one quarter and a prospectus from another can describe materially different portfolios.

  1. Download the latest prospectus and summary prospectus. Record the fund’s objective, whether it is active or index-tracking, its benchmark name, concentration language, 80% policy (if any), permitted countries, market-cap limits, derivatives policy, and fee table.
  2. Download the most recent shareholder report. Note the reporting period, stated expense ratio, portfolio turnover, securities-lending disclosures, assets, and any discussion of tracking or performance.
  3. Save the dated holdings file. Capture every security, weight, share class, country, sector classification, and cash or derivative position. Do not treat a website’s undated “top holdings” panel as a substitute for a dated file.
  4. Write down the reconstitution and rebalance schedule. A portfolio can look different immediately after an index review or an active manager’s rebalance, so comparisons are meaningful only when the observation dates are aligned.
  5. Check the fund’s trading data. Review assets, average daily volume, bid-ask spreads, premium or discount history, and any signs that the fund may be difficult to trade or vulnerable to closure.

This document-first approach prevents a common mistake: assuming that a fund called “AI” has a consistent or intuitive definition of artificial intelligence. The label is not a standardized exposure test.

What does “AI” mean inside a particular ETF?

Each fund defines its investable universe differently. Before comparing holdings, identify the exact test that qualifies a company, how much of the portfolio must meet that test, and how often the test is applied.

Active funds use a manager’s judgment

An active manager can select companies across the AI value chain and change positions without waiting for an index rule. For example, the January 27, 2026 prospectus for the Pictet AI & Automation ETF says the fund normally invests at least 80% of net assets in global AI and automation companies. It evaluates links to the value chain using measures that include sales, EBITDA, enterprise value, and capital expenditure. Those measures can admit infrastructure, equipment, software, or other businesses whose AI exposure is indirect rather than a pure-play AI product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an active fund, read how the manager resolves borderline cases, how often the portfolio is reviewed, and whether the 80% policy applies to net assets or another defined base. The remaining portion may be invested outside the theme, held in cash, or used for implementation purposes under the prospectus rules.

Index funds follow explicit inclusion rules

A passive ETF follows an index methodology rather than a manager’s discretionary selection. The methodology should state its eligible countries, security types, liquidity screens, weighting method, maximum position sizes, and reconstitution schedule.

The Themes China Generative Artificial Intelligence ETF, for example, tracks a proprietary BITA index. Its prospectus says the index contained 24 companies as of December 31, 2025 and used a revenue-based Thematic Exposure Score drawn from company filings, earnings materials, and other public information. A revenue-based score can produce a very different portfolio from an index that counts patents, mentions in filings, or broad technology-sector membership.

Methodology example What the documents establish What to investigate next
Pictet AI & Automation ETF Active approach; normally at least 80% of net assets in global AI and automation companies; considers sales, EBITDA, enterprise value, capex, and other value-chain measures (January 27, 2026 prospectus). Manager discretion, portfolio turnover, definition of the remaining assets, and how indirect AI exposure is judged.
Themes China Generative Artificial Intelligence ETF Passive approach tracking a proprietary BITA index; 24 index companies as of December 31, 2025; revenue-based Thematic Exposure Score using public company information. Weighting caps, country and listing rules, reconstitution dates, turnover, and how revenue evidence is updated.

Do not infer that two funds are comparable because both use “AI” in their names. One may emphasize semiconductors and cloud infrastructure, another may focus on software, and a China-focused index may carry a distinct country and regulatory risk profile.

How do AI ETF fees reduce your return?

The expense ratio is the annual operating cost deducted from fund assets. Because the deduction is made inside the fund, you do not receive a separate bill; instead, the net asset value and your return are lower than they would be before expenses. The SEC’s July 23, 2025 investor bulletin explains that annual operating expenses are deducted from assets and reduce returns, and illustrates the effect of a 0.25% annual fee on a hypothetical $100,000 investment growing at 4% annually for 20 years.

A lower-cost fund does not automatically win. A higher-cost fund must deliver enough additional return, risk control, or differentiated exposure to offset the fee gap. Compare the stated expense ratio with the actual costs of owning and trading the ETF.

Fee reference Published figure How to interpret it
Index equity ETFs 0.14% asset-weighted average, Investment Company Institute 2025 data for 2024 A broad market reference, not a target or guarantee for thematic funds.
Actively managed equity ETFs 0.44% asset-weighted average, Investment Company Institute 2025 data for 2024 Useful context for active management, but thematic strategies can sit above or below this average.
First Trust Bloomberg Artificial Intelligence ETF 0.65% annualized expense ratio reported for the six-month period ending March 31, 2026 A fund-specific reported figure for that period; confirm the latest prospectus because expenses can change.

Which costs sit outside the expense ratio?

  • Bid-ask spread: The difference between the best available buying and selling prices. A wide spread is an immediate trading cost, especially for a large order or a thinly traded fund.
  • Commissions: Your broker may charge a commission even when the ETF itself has no purchase fee. Check the schedule that applies to your account and location.
  • Turnover: Frequent portfolio changes can create trading costs and, in a taxable account, realize more gains. The shareholder report and prospectus describe turnover and the strategy’s trading approach.
  • Acquired-fund expenses: If the ETF invests in other funds, their expenses may appear separately as acquired-fund fees or in the notes. Include them when comparing total economic cost.
  • Tracking difference: An index fund can lag its benchmark by more than the stated expense ratio because of sampling, taxes, trading, cash drag, rebalancing, and corporate actions.

Use the prospectus fee table for the formal expense ratio, then use the shareholder report and market data to see how the strategy has been implemented. FINRA’s Fund Analyzer is one tool Investor.gov points investors toward for comparing fund costs, but you still need to verify that the inputs and share class match your ETF.

How do you measure concentration instead of merely counting holdings?

Count the securities, but do not stop there. Calculate the largest single position, the combined weight of the top five and top ten positions, sector and country shares, market-cap exposure, and overlap with your other funds and individual stocks. A fund can own dozens of names while its performance is driven by a handful of semiconductor, cloud, or platform companies that respond to the same economic and technology cycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use these concentration calculations

  1. Largest position: Record the weight of the biggest holding. A single-company shock can have a noticeable effect when this number is high.
  2. Top-five weight: Add the five largest positions. This shows how much of the portfolio is controlled by a small core.
  3. Top-ten weight: Add the ten largest positions. Compare it with the number of holdings; ten dominant positions in a 50-stock fund tell a different risk story from ten positions in a 200-stock fund.
  4. Sector and industry shares: Group holdings consistently, using the fund’s classification first and a second classification if needed. “Technology” can hide very different exposures to chips, equipment, software, and internet platforms.
  5. Country and listing exposure: Separate the company’s listing country from its economic exposure where the documents permit. Country concentration can add currency, regulatory, and geopolitical risks.
  6. Portfolio overlap: Compare the ETF’s largest positions with your broad-market funds, sector funds, employer stock, and individual shares. The relevant question is your combined exposure, not the ETF in isolation.

Investor.gov warns that narrowly focused funds may not diversify an investor’s portfolio and recommends comparing top holdings across funds. Its concentration-risk language is explicit: “The fund may concentrate its investments in a particular industry, sector or geographical area, which can result in a less diversified portfolio that may be subject to greater volatility in performance than a fund that does not concentrate its investments.”

Worked example: the top ten can dominate a 50-holding fund

The First Trust Bloomberg Artificial Intelligence ETF shareholder report for the six-month period ending March 31, 2026 listed 50 holdings. Its ten largest positions were:

Holding Weight
NVIDIA 8.3%
Amazon 8.2%
Alphabet A 8.2%
Broadcom 8.0%
Microsoft 6.8%
ASML 5.1%
Taiwan Semiconductor 5.1%
Micron 4.6%
AMD 4.1%
Meta A 3.9%
Combined top ten 62.3% (calculated from the listed weights)

The 62.3% figure is a calculation from the report’s component weights, not a percentage quoted by the report. It means that the other 40 holdings collectively represented the remaining 37.7% at that date. The concentration is also thematic: several of the largest companies are linked to semiconductor demand, cloud infrastructure, or large technology platforms, so their returns may be correlated even though they are separate legal issuers.

Comparison axis Questions to answer Why it matters
Management method Is it passive or active? What index or manager process controls decisions? Determines how predictable the portfolio is and how quickly it can respond to changing AI themes.
AI definition What minimum revenue, exposure, or value-chain test qualifies a company? Is there an 80% policy? Reveals whether the fund owns direct AI businesses, suppliers, broad technology companies, or a mixture.
Index breadth How many securities are eligible, how many are held, and are there position caps? Shows whether the portfolio’s apparent breadth translates into meaningful diversification.
Rebalancing When is the index reconstituted, and how often does the manager trade? Frequent changes can raise turnover and make a dated holdings snapshot stale quickly.
Concentration What are the top-five, top-ten, largest single-name, sector, country, and market-cap weights? Identifies the drivers that may dominate volatility and drawdowns.
Overlap Which holdings already appear in your other ETFs or individual stocks? Measures the new exposure you actually add to your portfolio.
Cost What is the current expense ratio, and what additional spread, turnover, acquired-fund, or commission costs apply? A cheaper headline fee can be offset by expensive trading or implementation.
Liquidity What are assets, trading volume, normal spreads, and premium/discount behavior? Affects entry, exit, and the reliability of quoted prices.
Index implementation How large is the tracking difference, and how does the fund handle cash, taxes, corporate actions, and rebalances? Shows how closely investors receive the return promised by the index description.
Portfolio fit Does the risk match your time horizon and tolerance for losses? Will you need to rebalance? A thematic allocation should support, not accidentally replace, the diversification your plan requires.

For every row, preserve the source date and definition. “Top ten” based on one fund’s market-value weights cannot be compared with another fund’s equal-weight methodology unless you understand how each number was produced.

What trading and operational risks should you check?

Two ETFs with similar holdings and expense ratios can behave differently in the market. Implementation quality determines how easily you can trade, how closely an index fund tracks its benchmark, and what happens during stress.

Liquidity and spreads

Look at the normal bid-ask spread during the hours when you plan to trade, not just the last quoted price. Use limit orders when a spread is material, and be cautious about interpreting a brief surge in volume as a permanent improvement in liquidity. Fund assets and secondary-market volume are related but not identical: a large fund can still have a wide spread at a particular time, while a smaller fund can trade efficiently when a market maker is active.

Premiums and discounts to net asset value

An ETF’s market price can trade above or below its net asset value. Review the fund’s premium/discount history and the circumstances around large deviations, especially when the underlying securities trade in different time zones or are less liquid. A purchase at a premium and a sale at a discount can reduce your realized return even if the underlying portfolio is unchanged.

Tracking difference and turnover

For an index ETF, compare the fund’s return with the index after accounting for the measurement period and currency. A persistent gap larger than the stated fee deserves an explanation. Turnover can rise when an index reconstitutes, when the methodology changes, or when an active manager adjusts views; higher turnover can increase trading costs and taxable distributions.

Securities lending and closure risk

Read the securities-lending section for collateral rules, revenue-sharing arrangements, and counterparty protections. Lending income may help offset expenses, but it does not remove the associated operational and counterparty risks described in the documents.

Also consider closure risk. Assets, trading activity, sponsor support, and the fund’s strategic importance can affect whether an ETF remains open. A closure is not the same as a permanent loss, but it can create a forced sale, tax consequences, and an inconvenient reinvestment decision.

How do you decide whether an AI ETF fits your portfolio?

Start with the role the ETF must play, then test whether its actual exposures fulfill that role. If you already own broad technology funds or the largest companies in the AI supply chain, an AI ETF may add less diversification than its name suggests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define the intended allocation

  • Satellite growth allocation: You are deliberately accepting higher thematic and sector risk around a diversified core.
  • Broad equity replacement: You expect the ETF to serve as a main equity holding. A narrow AI mandate is generally not designed to replace exposure across industries and countries.
  • Specific value-chain exposure: You want software, semiconductors, infrastructure, or another segment. Verify that the holdings and inclusion rules actually isolate that segment.

Match risk with time horizon

Investor.gov emphasizes that risk tolerance and time horizon should guide allocation. A concentrated thematic fund can experience larger swings than a broadly diversified equity fund, and you may be forced to sell at an unfavorable time if the money is needed soon. Decide in advance how much loss you could tolerate and what event would trigger a rebalance rather than making that decision during a drawdown.

Check combined exposure

Create one list containing the AI ETF, your other ETFs, individual stocks, and employer equity. Add the weights of identical issuers and group related businesses such as chip designers, foundries, equipment makers, cloud providers, and platform companies. This combined view can reveal that several funds provide different labels but the same underlying risk.

Set a review rule

Review the holdings after each published rebalance or shareholder report, and whenever the fund changes its index or investment policy. Recalculate concentration when a top position grows sharply, when a merger changes an issuer, or when your other investments change. Rebalancing may be necessary as weights drift away from the allocation you intended.

What mistakes commonly lead to a bad AI ETF comparison?

  • Choosing by the name: “AI” does not tell you whether the fund owns direct developers, infrastructure suppliers, or broad technology companies.
  • Comparing only expense ratios: Ignore spreads, turnover, acquired-fund expenses, commissions, and tracking difference and you may select the fund with the lowest visible fee but the higher total cost.
  • Counting holdings without weighting them: Fifty names can still leave most assets in ten companies, as the 62.3% top-ten calculation in the March 31, 2026 example demonstrates.
  • Mixing dates: A current price, an old holdings file, and a prior prospectus can describe different portfolios and produce a misleading comparison.
  • Ignoring overlap: The ETF may duplicate your largest existing positions, increasing concentration rather than adding a new source of return.
  • Assuming index means low risk: A rules-based index can be highly concentrated by industry, geography, market capitalization, or correlated business drivers.
  • Overlooking implementation: Premiums, discounts, wide spreads, turnover, lending arrangements, and closure risk affect the investor’s experience even when the strategy sounds compelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can an ETF’s market price differ from its net asset value?

The market price is set by trades in the ETF, while net asset value is calculated from the underlying portfolio. Differences can widen when the underlying securities are closed, trade in another time zone, or become difficult to price, so check the fund’s premium/discount history before placing an order.

How should I handle an AI ETF whose index methodology changes?

Save the old and new methodology documents, then compare the eligible universe, weighting caps, rebalance dates, and resulting top holdings. Reassess the fund’s role rather than assuming the new portfolio still provides the exposure you originally purchased.

Does securities lending make an ETF cheaper to own?

Lending revenue can offset part of a fund’s operating expenses, but the benefit depends on actual lending activity and the fund’s revenue-sharing terms. Review the collateral and counterparty disclosures instead of treating lending income as a guaranteed fee reduction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if an ETF’s holdings file and shareholder report disagree?

First check their “as of” dates and whether one reports derivatives, cash, or affiliated funds differently. Use the newer dated holdings file for current concentration analysis, and use the shareholder report to understand the historical period and costs rather than combining the figures.
