A high Overcooked score does not, by itself, prove that an AI agent cooperates. A credible evaluation measures both what the team achieves and how the partners achieve it. Use six layers: shared task outcome, coordination process, partner generalization, environment generalization, robustness to edge cases, and communication or adaptation for language-capable agents. Test with held-out teammates and layouts, include human players when possible, repeat episodes across random seeds, report uncertainty, and release enough trajectories or code for others to reproduce the result.

What does an Overcooked-style benchmark actually test?

Overcooked-AI is a fully cooperative environment. Agents must place ingredients in pots, wait for cooking, pick up finished soup, and deliver it while sharing the reward. The kitchen forces interdependence: one player may fetch ingredients, another may use the pot, and both must avoid blocking one another. A policy can therefore earn points through a brittle routine that works only with a familiar partner, or through genuine coordination that transfers to new people and situations.

Evaluation should separate those possibilities. Treat the game as a controlled laboratory for ad-hoc teamwork rather than as a leaderboard in which the largest return automatically wins.

Is a higher Overcooked score enough to prove cooperation?

No. Reward is necessary evidence of task success, but it is an incomplete measure of cooperation. An agent might collect most ingredients itself, exploit a predictable teammate, or succeed while the partner contributes little. Conversely, a team can show useful reliance, handoffs, and recovery even when a few kitchen accidents reduce its final score.

Biswas, Palod, Bhambri, and Kambhampati’s AAAI 2026 study formalized this concern with constructive interdependence. Their conclusion is direct: “task reward alone cannot reliably measure cooperation arising within a human-agent team.” Report outcome and process measures together so a reader can see whether reward came from coordinated behavior.

Which six evaluation layers should every study include?

Use the following layers as a minimum evaluation contract. Each answers a different question about an agent’s capability.

Layer Question it answers Core evidence
Shared task outcome Did the team complete the kitchen objective? Soups or orders delivered, score, completion rate, delivery time, catastrophic failures
Coordination process Did partners rely on and assist one another effectively? Constructive interdependence, handoffs, allocation, collisions, idle time, deadlocks, recovery
Partner generalization Does the agent adapt to unfamiliar teammates? Performance and behavior with held-out policies, human models, and real humans
Environment generalization Does it transfer beyond training kitchens? Seen versus novel layouts, arrangements, orders, and interaction constraints
Robustness What happens when normal assumptions fail? Pass rates on blocked paths, delays, ambiguous ownership, failed handoffs, and recovery probes
Communication and adaptation Can a language-capable agent coordinate deliberately over time? Task-critical messages, competence-boundary awareness, active collaboration, continuous adaptation

How do you measure shared task outcome?

Start with measures that describe the team’s externally visible result. Report the full episode distribution, not just an average, because a policy that occasionally fails catastrophically is different from one with the same mean and stable behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Orders or soups delivered: count completed deliveries under the fixed episode horizon.
  • Score per episode: preserve the environment’s reward definition and state the exact benchmark version.
  • Completion rate: proportion of episodes reaching the stated delivery objective.
  • Time-to-delivery: record elapsed steps or seconds for each successful order, including the tail of slow episodes.
  • Catastrophic failures: count events such as an irrecoverably blocked team, spoiled or overcooked order, or episode termination before useful recovery.

Give mean, median, spread, and lower-tail performance where the metric supports it. Confidence intervals should be calculated from independent episodes or seeds, with the aggregation method stated. Do not combine scores from different layouts, horizons, or reward definitions without labeling the change.

How can you tell whether coordination, rather than luck, produced the result?

Instrument the trajectory and score the process. A process metric should be tied to an observable event or counterfactual, not an impression formed from a single replay.

Constructive interdependence

Measure whether each partner’s actions are genuinely relied upon. Useful tests compare the team’s outcome when a partner’s relevant subtask is removed or delayed, while holding the rest of the episode as constant as possible. High interdependence means the policy has organized work so that the other player’s contribution matters, not merely that both players moved at the same time.

Handoffs and task allocation

Log who owns each subtask—ingredient retrieval, chopping or placement where applicable, pot operation, plate delivery, and replenishment—and when ownership changes. Count completed handoffs, abandoned handoffs, duplicate work, and conflicts in role assignment. A useful handoff transfers an item or responsibility with little waiting; a nominal handoff that leaves the partner searching is not evidence of good coordination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Collisions, idle time, and deadlocks

Record blocked moves, player-player collisions, waits caused by a partner, and periods in which an agent has an available useful action but does nothing. Define a deadlock operationally, such as a repeated state or a blocked subtask that prevents delivery for the remainder of the episode, and apply the same definition to every policy.

Recovery after mistakes

Mark the first error, the time until a useful action resumes, and whether the original order is completed. Recovery time distinguishes a policy that notices and repairs a mistake from one that continues executing an obsolete plan.

How should you test an agent with unfamiliar partners?

Hold out partner behavior before training and evaluate every pairing explicitly. A single average can conceal a policy that works only with its favorite teammate.

  1. Define the split first. Create separate training, validation, and test sets for partner policies. Freeze the test list before tuning hyperparameters.
  2. Build a partner matrix. Include the training partner, held-out scripted policies, held-out reinforcement-learning policies, behavior models derived from humans, and real human participants where feasible.
  3. Run each cell under the same protocol. Keep layouts, episode horizons, randomization, observation limits, and communication rules fixed while changing the partner.
  4. Report every pairing. Show mean and tail outcomes for each agent-partner cell, plus the gap between the familiar partner and the unseen partners.
  5. Inspect behavioral change. Compare roles, message timing, route choices, and recovery behavior, not only the final score.

Carroll and colleagues’ NeurIPS 2019 work demonstrated why this matters: self-play and population-trained agents could coordinate with themselves yet perform substantially worse with human models. Training or adapting to human gameplay improved coordination. A large familiar-partner score is therefore a weak claim about ad-hoc teamwork.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you evaluate generalization to new kitchens?

Use layout and task shifts that are specified independently of training. The Overcooked Generalisation Challenge (OGC) was created to test novel partners and unfamiliar environments together, exposing failures that an in-distribution benchmark misses.

Three useful environment splits

  • Familiar: layouts and object arrangements represented during training.
  • Procedurally varied: altered ingredient positions, order distributions, or movement constraints generated under a known rule.
  • Novel: held-out kitchens in the style of OGC, with structures and combinations the policy did not see during learning.

Report the familiar-to-unseen performance gap for each partner class. If a policy improves on familiar kitchens but collapses on novel ones, describe that as limited environment transfer rather than general cooperation. Ruhdorfer and colleagues’ TMLR 2025 report found that current methods struggle with the joint challenge of novel partners and novel layouts, so test the joint shift instead of evaluating each axis in isolation.

What robustness tests reveal failures that average reward hides?

Create unit-test-style probes with a known trigger and a measurable expected response. Microsoft Research recommends edge-case testing because average validation reward can conceal rare but consequential failures.

  • Blocked path: place a partner or object so the preferred route is unavailable; check whether the agent replans rather than repeatedly colliding.
  • Delayed partner: pause or slow the teammate during a handoff; measure waiting, rerouting, and eventual completion.
  • Ambiguous role ownership: make two subtasks simultaneously plausible; assess whether the agents negotiate or duplicate work.
  • Unexpected ingredient placement: move a required item from its usual location and record detection and route adaptation.
  • Failed handoff: remove the item or interrupt the receiving action; test whether responsibility is reassigned.
  • Dropped or overcooked order: inject a loss and measure whether the team recovers, replans the queue, and avoids repeating the same error.

Publish pass rates by probe and failure traces. A robustness score should not replace normal performance; it supplements it with evidence about behavior outside the average case.

What should language-capable agents be scored on?

For agents that communicate in natural language, evaluate the usefulness and timing of communication, not message volume. Collab-Overcooked evaluates 13 large language models on 30 open-ended tasks and reports strong goal interpretation but persistent weaknesses in active collaboration and continuous adaptation.

Competence-boundary awareness

Check whether the agent states or infers what it can observe and execute, avoids promising an action outside its control, and requests help when uncertainty blocks progress. Score the result against the actual game state rather than the confidence of the wording.

Task-critical communication

Label messages that change a partner’s next useful action: claiming a subtask, announcing a completed handoff, warning about a blocked route, or revising a plan. Separate these from redundant narration. Measure correctness, timing, and whether the partner’s behavior changes appropriately.

Active collaboration

Test whether the agent initiates coordination, notices a partner’s unmet need, and offers or accepts a role change. An agent that answers direct questions but never proposes a useful adjustment is not actively collaborating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Continuous adaptation

Track behavior across an episode or series of episodes after a partner repeatedly uses a different style. The policy should update its assumptions, role allocation, and message strategy instead of issuing the same plan after evidence that it fails.

What is a reproducible evaluation procedure?

Use a pre-registered-style protocol that another team can execute without guessing hidden settings.

  1. Pin the environment. Record the Overcooked-AI or Overcooked-V2 commit, layout definitions, observation and action spaces, episode horizon, reward function, and communication interface.
  2. Declare splits before training. List training, validation, familiar-test, unseen-partner, and novel-layout sets, including randomization rules.
  3. Define metrics and failure labels. Write the event definitions for delivery, handoff, collision, idle period, deadlock, catastrophic failure, and recovery before looking at test results.
  4. Instrument trajectories. Save state, action, subtask, communication, collisions, waits, handoffs, order completion, and recovery events at each step.
  5. Run repeated seeds. Use multiple independent random seeds and report episode-level distributions and confidence intervals, not a single favorable run.
  6. Execute robustness probes. Keep the probe suite fixed across agents and publish the trigger, expected behavior, and pass criterion.
  7. Conduct human trials carefully. Train participants on the controls, randomize the order in which they meet agents, collect multiple episodes, and record both objective outcomes and post-game ratings.
  8. Release artifacts. Provide code, configuration, trajectory data where consent and privacy permit, metric scripts, and the exact evaluation command or procedure.

How should human-agent trials be designed?

Human trials add ecological validity but also introduce learning, fatigue, and expectation effects. Give participants a short practice period so the control interface is not the main confound. Randomize agent order to reduce a first-agent or last-agent bias, and collect multiple episodes per pairing.

Record objective outcomes alongside post-game ratings of teamwork, predictability, contribution, fluency, and willingness to play again. Analyze whether ratings agree with trajectory metrics; disagreement is informative. For example, an agent may deliver many soups while making unpredictable moves that humans rate as difficult to work with.

How do published results change the way agents should be compared?

Several findings point to a broader comparison standard than raw reward.

Finding Evaluation implication
Human-aware coordination (Carroll et al., NeurIPS 2019) Include human behavior models and real people; self-play performance is not sufficient.
Constructive interdependence (Biswas et al., AAAI 2026) Measure whether teammates rely on one another instead of equating reward with cooperation.
Joint generalization difficulty (Ruhdorfer et al., TMLR 2025) Test unseen partners and novel layouts together, not only in separate experiments.
Hierarchical abstractions (Aroca-Ouellette et al., IJCAI 2025) Check whether a method’s abstraction improves results with unseen agents and humans and remains resilient under environmental shifts.
Ad-hoc teamwork suites (Jing et al., ICML/PMLR 306, 2026) Use diverse reinforcement-learning and heuristic teammates with controlled train-test shifts, as in ICRL4AHT for Overcooked-V2.
Language-agent process evaluation (Sun et al., EMNLP 2025) Score active collaboration and continuous adaptation, not only goal interpretation or final delivery.

Which comparison axes belong in a results table?

When comparing agents, present a compact table that lets readers distinguish capability from test convenience.

Axis What to report Why it matters
Task performance Mean, median, lower-tail score; delivery and completion rates Shows both typical and failure-prone behavior
Partner gap Familiar-partner versus unseen-partner results for every pairing Exposes overfitting to a teammate
Layout gap Familiar-layout versus novel-layout results Measures environment transfer
Coordination process Interdependence, handoffs, allocation, collisions, idle time, deadlocks, recovery Separates cooperative process from outcome alone
Communication Critical-message correctness and timing, awareness, active collaboration, adaptation Captures language-mediated teamwork
Robustness Pass rate and trace examples for each edge-case probe Shows behavior under controlled disruption
Human experience Teamwork, predictability, contribution, fluency, willingness to play again Measures whether people can actually work with the agent
Efficiency Compute, inference latency, and sample efficiency under stated hardware and training budgets Clarifies practical trade-offs
Reproducibility Seeds, fixed protocol, code, configurations, and permitted trajectory data Allows independent verification

What common evaluation mistakes should you avoid?

  • Reporting only self-play: this measures compatibility with a familiar policy, not ad-hoc teamwork.
  • Using one layout: memorized routes and role scripts can look like general intelligence.
  • Publishing only the mean: rare deadlocks and catastrophic failures disappear in an average.
  • Counting messages: verbosity is not task-critical communication.
  • Changing several conditions at once: if partner, layout, horizon, and reward all change, the cause of a performance difference is unclear.
  • Leaving event definitions implicit: different collision or handoff rules make metric comparisons invalid.
  • Ignoring latency and compute: a policy that acts after a partner’s opportunity has passed may have a high offline score but poor real-time teamwork.
  • Showing only successful replays: include representative failures and the exact trigger that caused them.

What does a strong evaluation claim look like?

A defensible claim is scoped to the evidence: for example, “The agent maintains delivery performance on the held-out partner suite, reduces its familiar-to-unseen gap on novel kitchens, and shows higher constructive interdependence in human trials.” It names the partner and environment splits, process metrics, uncertainty, and any limitations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A weaker claim—“The agent cooperates because it achieved the highest score”—omits the tests that distinguish cooperation from memorization, exploitation of a predictable teammate, or lucky task completion. The evaluation is complete only when readers can see the outcome, the coordination process, the transfer gaps, the edge-case behavior, and the reproducibility details.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many random seeds should an Overcooked evaluation use?

There is no universal seed count that is valid for every benchmark. Use enough independent seeds and episodes for stable episode-level distributions, then publish the seed list, confidence-interval method, and stopping rule so another team can judge whether the uncertainty is acceptable.

Can I compare scores from Overcooked-AI and Overcooked-V2 directly?

Not without checking that layouts, reward definitions, horizons, observations, and action spaces match. Treat results from different environment versions as separate experiments unless you provide a controlled cross-version calibration.

Should language transcripts be released with trajectories?

Release transcripts only when participant consent, privacy review, and game-policy licensing allow it. If raw text cannot be shared, provide de-identified message timing, event labels, and an executable metric script so communication claims remain auditable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I report an agent that performs well with humans but poorly with scripted partners?

Show the complete partner matrix rather than selecting one result. Explain which behavioral assumptions differ between the scripted policies and people, and describe the agent as conditionally effective instead of universally robust.
