Evaluate AI agent security and monitoring platforms as controls around the full agent loop—not as dashboards or model-brand checklists. A sound assessment tests what a platform can prevent, what it can observe, how well it exposes weaknesses before deployment, and whether its coverage fits your agents, tools, data, and operating environment. Many teams will need more than one product category to cover those jobs.

What should an AI agent security evaluation cover?

Start with the threats an agent can encounter and the actions it can take. An agent may read untrusted content, call tools, access data, retain memory, or pass work to another agent. A security product that monitors only model prompts can miss consequential events elsewhere in that chain.

OWASP’s LLM06:2025 describes excessive agency as harmful actions enabled by excessive functionality, permissions, or autonomy. Triggers can include direct or indirect prompt injection, compromised extensions, and compromised peer agents. OWASP’s agent-security guidance also identifies risks such as tool abuse, privilege escalation, data exfiltration, memory poisoning, and multi-agent attacks.

Map each risk to the system layer where it can arise and the control that should address it. The goal is not to check whether a vendor uses the word “agent”; it is to establish what is actually covered and what remains your responsibility.

Risk area What to test Control evidence to seek
Prompt injection and untrusted input Direct instructions that override policy, plus indirect instructions embedded in retrieved or otherwise ingested content Detection or prevention at relevant input boundaries, trace evidence showing what content entered the workflow, and repeatable tests
Tool abuse and privilege escalation Requests to invoke an unauthorized tool, exceed the user’s authority, or use a permitted tool for a different purpose Deny-by-default permissions, independent authorization, and per-user or per-session scope
Data exfiltration and unsafe output handling Attempts to expose protected information through a tool, response, or network destination Data-boundary and egress controls, policy decisions in telemetry, and execution results that show whether data left the boundary
Memory poisoning Instructions or content that could persist and influence later sessions or tasks Memory isolation, a way to inspect relevant context, and tests across the affected workflow
Excessive autonomy and recursive abuse Unapproved consequential actions, repeated calls, or an escalating chain of tool use Human approval where required, limits enforced outside the model, and a way to stop or restrict execution
Multi-agent and peer compromise A compromised or untrusted peer agent passing instructions, data, or actions downstream Identity and authorization boundaries between agents, end-to-end correlation, and tests for chained workflows

Use OWASP’s recommended control areas as a baseline: least privilege, independent authorization, input validation, memory isolation, human approval, audit logging, anomaly detection, and structured adversarial testing. A platform need not implement every control itself, but its coverage map should show which components enforce them.

What is the difference between runtime protection, observability, and red-team testing?

Runtime protection attempts to govern what an agent can do while it is running. Observability helps explain what happened. Red-team tooling tests what could happen under adversarial conditions. These are related but distinct jobs, so an observability product should not be treated as an enforcement control merely because it displays risky events.

Capability Primary question it answers Typical evaluation evidence
Runtime enforcement Can this action be denied, constrained, or held for authorization before it executes? Observed block or authorization decision at the relevant execution point
Observability and forensics What did the agent, tools, and policies do across the workflow? Correlated events with enough context to reconstruct the sequence and outcome
Adversarial testing Can an attacker cause the agent to violate an expected boundary? Repeatable test cases, expected decisions, observed decisions, and regression results

Some products combine functions, but verify each one separately. A useful alert does not prove an action was blocked; a successful block does not prove the full incident is reconstructable; and a clean test run does not prove runtime enforcement is active in production.

How can I tell whether runtime controls really enforce policy?

Ask where a decision is made and whether the execution path must obey it. Enforcement should not depend on the model following an instruction in its prompt: authorization belongs in an execution component or policy service that can allow or deny the action independently.

Check the enforcement boundary

  • Unknown tools: Confirm that an unregistered or unauthorized tool is denied by default rather than passed through.
  • Identity and scope: Verify that policy can be evaluated for the relevant user and session, not just for the agent as a whole.
  • Approval integrity: Check whether approval is bound to the exact normalized action parameters. Test whether changing a parameter after approval invalidates the approval and whether the same approval can be replayed.
  • Step-up authorization: Determine whether sensitive actions can require stronger authentication or human review.
  • Execution isolation: Ask where tools run and what sandboxing or other separation is applied.
  • Network boundaries: Verify how destinations and data egress are restricted and which paths are covered.
  • Loops and runaway activity: Test whether recursive tool use or costly repeated calls can be stopped or constrained.
  • Failure behavior: Establish what happens if the policy service, inspection hook, or required telemetry is unavailable. For a control that must protect an action, define whether failure must block that action.

For each control, observe both the decision and the action. A vendor statement that a policy exists is not enough: configure a disallowed case, run it through the real agent execution path, and verify the operation was stopped before the consequential action occurred.

Account for preview features and coverage limits

Microsoft Learn documents Microsoft Defender runtime protection as inspecting critical points where content enters or leaves an agent’s reasoning. Its documentation describes agent-native event inspection and network inspection, with supported actions that can be audited or blocked. The capability is labeled preview, and the documentation notes coverage limitations for network inspection. Treat that as a bounded product claim, not proof of universal coverage: verify the supported agent versions, event hooks, and network paths in your intended deployment.

What should an AI agent monitoring tool log?

Monitoring should let an investigator reconstruct the complete workflow, not just view a sequence of model prompts. OWASP’s Agent Observability Standard frames the objective as making agents “instrumentable, traceable and inspectable.” Its guidance links instrumentation and tracing with MCP, A2A, OCSF, and OpenTelemetry, and inspectability with component and software inventories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a representative incident to test whether an investigator can answer: what was requested, what untrusted content entered, what did the model propose, which policy evaluated it, who approved it, what actually executed, and what data left the boundary? If the system cannot connect those events, a dashboard full of isolated records may still be inadequate for forensics.

Minimum event fields to request

  • Identity and context: User, agent, session or thread, and the relevant model and agent versions.
  • Inputs and retrieval: Prompts and relevant retrieved content, with a clear account of how sensitive values are redacted or protected.
  • Tool activity: Tool requests, normalized parameters, tool responses, and execution results.
  • Governance: Policy version, risk classification, policy decision, approval identifier, and approver where applicable.
  • Outcome and operations: Final outcome, latency, token and cost usage, and whether the action was allowed, denied, or interrupted.
  • Correlation: Identifiers that preserve sequence and relationships across multi-step and multi-agent workflows.

Then test retention, redaction, export, and access controls against your own investigation and operational needs. These are evaluation questions, not uniform capabilities: verify the behavior for the product configuration and deployment you plan to use.

LangSmith’s documentation provides one example of framework-oriented vocabulary: runs represent individual model calls, tool invocations, and retrieval; traces represent an operation; threads represent sessions; and trajectories represent an ordered path through a session. Use terms like these to ask how a product groups events, but compare the actual trace contents and exportability rather than assuming similarly named objects are interchangeable.

How should I test prompt injection and tool abuse?

Build a versioned abuse-case matrix and run it against the actual agent workflow. Include adversarial inputs, expected policy decisions, and evidence of what executed; do not rely on demonstrations that show an attack without measuring whether a control stopped it.

Build a repeatable test set

  1. Define the boundary: List the agent, model provider, tools, retrieval sources, memory, permissions, and network paths in scope.
  2. Write cases by failure mode: Cover prompt override, indirect injection in ingested content, tool misuse, privilege escalation, memory poisoning, data exfiltration, recursive abuse, approval bypass, and multi-agent chaining.
  3. Specify expected results: State whether each case should be denied, require approval, be safely handled, or generate a security signal. Record the reason and the boundary the control is meant to protect.
  4. Run through the real path: Use the deployed policies and integrations, not a simplified model-only test if the risk depends on tool or retrieval behavior.
  5. Compare expected and observed decisions: Track blocked, allowed, and missed cases, and inspect whether the trace supports the result.
  6. Preserve the configuration: Record the tested agent version, model provider, tool policy, retrieval configuration, expected result, observed result, and residual risk.
  7. Repeat after material changes: Rerun relevant cases after changes to prompts, tools, memory, retrieval, policies, or model providers.

Promptfoo describes red teaming as finding vulnerabilities with simulated adversarial inputs and notes that agents add risks around information leakage, access control, and misuse of connected APIs or databases. Evaluate which agent and tool targets, strategies, plugins, and regression reports are available for your use case; do not assume that a general red-team feature covers every integration.

NIST’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation describes agent hijacking as indirect prompt injection through ingested data and calls for identifying and measuring the risk. Its January 17, 2025 technical blog is a useful basis for treating agent hijacking as a testable risk rather than an anecdotal demonstration. Convert the risk into repeatable cases and record what the system did.

Make testing a release control

Keep test cases and expected outcomes under version control, and require CI gates for high-risk changes where your deployment process supports them. A passing result should be tied to the tested configuration; it does not establish safety for a different model provider, tool policy, retrieval source, or agent version. Preserve residual risks instead of treating a successful test run as a blanket assurance.

Arize Phoenix documentation describes tracing, evaluation tests, production examples, experiments, OpenTelemetry, and OpenInference. Check Point documentation presents areas including discovery, protection, monitoring, governance, guardrails, policies, red teaming, and evaluation. Those feature areas identify what to investigate; they do not establish that a feature covers every agent, region, data plane, or enforcement point you use.

Decide whether one platform can satisfy a requirement with evidence, or whether a separate enforcement, observability, or testing layer is needed. If a product is strong in tracing but cannot block actions, pair it with a control that can enforce authorization. If the testing product reports findings but does not provide production telemetry, test how those results feed your deployment and incident process.

How do I run a proof of value and score vendors?

Give every candidate the same representative agents, workflows, abuse cases, and evidence requirements. Score operational performance and control coverage separately so a polished interface cannot compensate for a control gap.

Build the coverage matrix

Make one row for each meaningful combination of agent, model provider, tool, protocol, and deployment mode. For each row, record whether the platform supports discovery, prevention, telemetry, testing, and investigation; whether the capability is available in your intended configuration; and what evidence demonstrated it. Mark untested or unsupported combinations as gaps rather than assuming a nearby integration covers them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure the proof of value

  • Attack outcomes: Count cases blocked, allowed, and missed against the expected result, then examine failures individually rather than relying on a single aggregate.
  • Trace completeness: Check whether investigators can reconstruct inputs, proposed actions, policy decisions, approvals, execution, and outcome.
  • Alert quality: Assess alert precision and whether responders can distinguish a genuine policy violation from expected behavior.
  • Operational timing: Measure detection and blocking latency in your own workflow.
  • Authorization behavior: Verify approval-policy outcomes, including changed parameters and attempts to reuse an approval.
  • Investigation effort: Record analyst time needed to answer the incident questions in the observability section.
  • Integration effort: Track the work needed to connect agents, tools, protocols, policies, and existing SOC processes.
  • Data handling: Verify retention, redaction, access, and export behavior for the information your agents process.
  • Residual risk: Document uncovered agents, uninspected paths, alert-only controls, and tests that remain unresolved.

Keep a record of the exact product, agent, model, policies, and integrations tested. There is no established universal vendor benchmark, price, or SLA in the comparison evidence here, so request current pricing and support matrices directly and compare them against the same defined scope. Do not infer a market-wide success rate from a vendor’s selected demonstration.

What are the most common evaluation mistakes?

The most costly errors are treating unlike capabilities as equivalents and accepting claims without evidence from the relevant execution path.

  • Buying a dashboard instead of a control: Confirm whether an event can actually be blocked, not merely logged or alerted.
  • Testing only direct prompts: Include untrusted retrieved or ingested content, since agent hijacking can happen indirectly.
  • Trusting model-generated authorization: Verify an independent policy check at the execution boundary.
  • Ignoring workflow context: Test tool calls, retrieval, memory, approvals, and multi-agent handoffs, not just model output.
  • Assuming support from a product label: Verify agent versions, event hooks, protocols, data planes, regions, and deployment modes individually.
  • Failing to preserve test configuration: Without version and policy details, a previous result may not apply after a material system change.
  • Confusing “not detected” with “safe”: Record untested and unsupported paths as residual risk.

These checks also help distinguish a platform’s genuine coverage from features that exist only in a different product tier, integration, or deployment mode. Ask for the exact scope and reproduce the behavior in the proof of value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should agent monitoring retain full prompts and tool arguments?

The answer depends on the sensitivity of the data and the investigation needs. Define which values must be available to reconstruct an event, which should be redacted or access-restricted, and verify that the configured retention and export behavior matches that policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I rerun agent security tests?

Run the relevant cases when a change can alter the trust boundary or action path, including updates to prompts, tools, memory, retrieval, policies, or model providers. Keep the old and new configuration details with the results so a change in outcome can be attributed.

Can a tracing platform replace an authorization service?

No. A trace can help explain a decision, but authorization needs to be enforced independently at the point where an action executes. Treat logging and permission enforcement as separate requirements even when one vendor offers both.

What should I do when a vendor cannot show support for one of my agent integrations?

Treat the integration as uncovered until you have evidence from the configuration you intend to deploy. Either test an alternative control at that boundary or record the gap and its residual risk explicitly.
