Estimate an LLM app’s cost by calculating input and output token charges separately, adding billed tools and modalities, then adding hosting, storage, monitoring, and other operating expenses. Model the result per request, per active user, and per month; use low, expected, and high scenarios until real usage data replaces your assumptions. For example, 2 million input tokens and 500,000 output tokens at assumed rates of $1 and $5 per million cost $4.50 for model tokens alone—not for the whole app.

What costs belong in an LLM app estimate?

A useful estimate separates costs that change with usage from costs that accrue even when usage is low. The largest variable is often token volume, but the model’s rate card is only one part of the bill. Tools, retrieval, modalities, hosting, and operational services can all change the total.

Variable model and feature charges

  • Input tokens: text and other billable input sent to the model, including system instructions, conversation history, and retrieved context when those are included in the request.
  • Output tokens: the model’s generated response. Input and output rates are usually different, so estimate them separately.
  • Cache charges: where available, cached input and cache writes may have distinct rates. Count tokens according to the provider’s cache rules rather than treating every input token as ordinary input.
  • Tools and retrieval: web search, file search, containers, and other tools can have separate per-call, storage, or usage charges.
  • Modalities: image generation, audio, transcription, and live sessions may use different billing units or rates from text tokens.
  • Processing and delivery options: batch eligibility, regional routing, data-residency requirements, or priority processing can affect effective cost.

Define the billable unit for every feature. A chat request may contain several model calls, a retrieval query, a reranking step, and a tool call. Pricing only the final answer understates the real transaction. Likewise, an image feature may incur an image-generation fee and storage or delivery costs even when its text prompt is short.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Non-model operating costs

Add the services required to make the product work: application compute, databases, vector storage, bandwidth, observability, support, and fixed platform fees. A low-traffic app with a complex retrieval or operations stack may spend more on these services than on model tokens. Keep them visible as separate lines so a token-price change does not obscure the rest of the bill.

Separate fixed commitments from usage-based charges. A database instance, logging plan, reserved GPU, or minimum platform subscription can dominate during an early pilot. Conversely, bandwidth, storage growth, and support tickets can become material as usage scales. Include taxes and currency conversion as separate invoice assumptions rather than changing the provider’s token rate.

How do I calculate monthly token cost?

Convert token totals to millions, then multiply input and output totals by their applicable per-million rates. Add separate cache, tool, and modality charges afterward; do not fold them into token rates unless the provider bills them that way.

Monthly model cost = (input_tokens / 1,000,000 × input_rate) + (output_tokens / 1,000,000 × output_rate) + cache charges + tool/modality charges

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monthly app cost = monthly model cost + hosting + storage/retrieval + monitoring + other fixed or variable operating costs

Use the rate for the actual context-length tier, region, service level, and billing channel. A rate shown for a short-context or standard tier may not apply when your prompts exceed that tier. Record whether a price is per million tokens, per call, per gigabyte-day, per image, per minute, or another unit before doing the multiplication.

Worked example: separate the arithmetic from the rate card

Suppose monthly usage is 2,000,000 input tokens and 500,000 output tokens. At assumed prices of $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, the calculation is:

(2 × $1) + (0.5 × $5) = $4.50

This is an illustrative arithmetic example, not a claim about a provider’s current model price. Replace the assumed rates with the exact model, context tier, region, and billing mode you plan to use, then add other charges and app infrastructure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example using a dated published rate

OpenAI’s pricing page, accessed October 25, 2026, lists GPT-6 Luna standard rates of $0.05 per 1 million input tokens and $0.25 per 1 million output tokens, with cached input at $0.005 per 1 million tokens. At those listed standard rates, the same 2 million input and 500,000 output tokens would cost $0.225 in uncached model-token charges: $0.10 for input plus $0.125 for output. That subtotal excludes any other charge, and the rate should be checked again before budgeting because provider prices can change.

If half of the 2 million input tokens qualified for the listed cached-input rate, the input portion would instead be $0.055: 1 million ordinary tokens at $0.05 plus 1 million cached tokens at $0.005. That saving exists only if the provider’s cache eligibility, minimum prefix, time-to-live, and write rules are satisfied. A cache write charge, if applicable, must be added separately.

Measure tokens instead of guessing from characters

Token counts vary with language, formatting, code, punctuation, and the tokenizer used by the selected model. Measure representative requests with the provider’s tokenizer or usage fields where possible. Include the complete system prompt, message history, retrieved passages, tool results, structured schemas, and hidden retries that are actually submitted. For a new product, sample short, median, and long conversations instead of relying on one “average” prompt.

How do I estimate cost per request, user, and month?

Start with the unit you need to make a decision about, then connect it to a workload assumption. Cost per user is not a fixed model property: it depends on how many requests each user makes and how many billable tokens and tool calls those requests generate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Per request

Measure or estimate the input and output tokens for a representative request. Include the system prompt, conversation history, retrieved passages, and any other content actually sent to the model. If a request can call a tool or retry, include those events in its expected cost rather than pricing only the successful final response.

For multi-step orchestration, sum every model call. For example, a request that classifies an intent, retrieves documents, drafts an answer, and performs a safety check has four token-bearing calls, even if the user sees one response. Add expected retry probability: if 5% of requests repeat a $0.02 call, the expected retry cost is another $0.001 per request.

Per active user

Use this relationship:

Monthly cost per active user = requests per active user per month × average cost per request

For example, if a planning model assumes 40,000 requests across 1,000 active users in a month, that is 40 requests per user on average. Multiply the request-level cost by 40 for the model estimate per user, then add any per-user storage, support, or other costs that apply. The request count is only useful if it reflects the product’s expected usage, not merely the number of registered accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Illustrate the assumption with a concrete workload. If each request averages 4,000 input tokens and 1,000 output tokens, 40 requests represent 160,000 input and 40,000 output tokens per user per month. Multiply those volumes by the selected rates, then add that user’s share of retrieval, hosting, and support. Heavy users can be several times the average, so consider a percentile or quota rather than promising that every user costs the mean.

Per month

Estimate total monthly input tokens and output tokens separately, then apply the formulas above. A simple workload model is:

Monthly input tokens = monthly requests × average input tokens per request

Monthly output tokens = monthly requests × average output tokens per request

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume every request has the same size. If one feature sends long documents and another handles short questions, estimate each feature or request type separately and add the subtotals. This helps reveal expensive paths that a single blended average can hide.

Also model concurrency and seasonality. A monthly total may be unchanged while a launch-day spike requires more compute, higher service tiers, or queueing. Distinguish active users from registered users, and define whether a request means a user action, an HTTP request, or a complete workflow.

Which prices and billing differences should I account for?

Use the selected provider’s current rate card for a final estimate. The following examples illustrate why a comparison needs more than a single “price per token” figure; they are dated and should not be treated as a complete comparison of current providers.

Examples from provider pricing documentation

Item Published detail Qualification
GPT-6 Luna standard input $0.05 per 1 million tokens OpenAI pricing page, accessed October 25, 2026
GPT-6 Luna standard output $0.25 per 1 million tokens OpenAI pricing page, accessed October 25, 2026
GPT-6 Luna cached input $0.005 per 1 million tokens OpenAI pricing page, accessed October 25, 2026
Web search $10 per 1,000 calls OpenAI pricing page, accessed October 25, 2026
File-search storage $0.10 per GB per day after the stated free allowance OpenAI pricing page, accessed October 25, 2026; the allowance affects the amount billed
Batch API 50% discount on both input and output tokens Anthropic pricing documentation, accessed October 25, 2026; check eligibility and latency trade-offs
US-only inference 1.1× multiplier Anthropic pricing documentation, accessed October 25, 2026, for supported newer Claude models

At $10 per 1,000 web-search calls, 12,000 monthly searches add $120 before counting any model tokens used to formulate the queries and answers. At $0.10 per GB per day, 20 GB retained for a 30-day month would be $60 after the stated free allowance, subject to that allowance’s terms. These examples show why a small per-call or storage fee can exceed text-token spend in a modest application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These examples do not establish every fee or condition for every model. Confirm the specific model, context-length tier, region, and billing channel in the provider’s pricing documentation. The Anthropic documentation also describes AWS Marketplace metering, so a cloud-channel bill may need to be considered alongside the model’s usage terms.

Historical prices are context, not a budget

A Society of Actuaries 2025 report included the following illustrative per-million-token input/output prices. They show how rates differed among models at the time, but they are historical figures; use current first-party pricing pages to make a purchasing or budget decision.

Model named in the 2025 report Input per 1 million tokens Output per 1 million tokens
GPT-4o $5 $15
GPT-4o mini $0.15 $0.60
Claude Opus 3 $15 $75
Claude Sonnet 3.5 $3 $15
Gemini 1.5 Pro $3.50 $10.50
Gemini 1.5 Flash $0.075 $0.30

How should I compare models and providers fairly?

Compare the effective cost of the workload you actually have, not just the headline input rate. A model with a lower input rate may not be cheaper for output-heavy traffic, long prompts, frequent tool calls, or requests that require a particular region or service tier.

  • Input and output mix: project both separately; a response-heavy workload can favor a different rate structure than a prompt-heavy one.
  • Cache behavior: estimate cacheable tokens and check cache-hit and cache-write rates and rules. Savings depend on whether the app’s repeated prompt patterns qualify.
  • Batch eligibility: asynchronous jobs may qualify for lower rates, but only where the workload and acceptable latency fit the provider’s batch conditions.
  • Context length: verify whether the selected context-length tier changes the applicable rates.
  • Tools and modalities: include expected search calls, file storage, image or audio work, and any other separately billed operations.
  • Geography and billing channel: include regional or data-residency premiums and cloud marketplace metering when relevant.
  • Service needs: weigh latency and reliability requirements alongside the cost. The lowest token rate is not automatically the right choice if it fails the product’s requirements.
  • Infrastructure: compare the full app cost, including retrieval, compute, monitoring, and fixed platform fees.

Run the same anonymized workload through each candidate and calculate effective dollars per successful task, not merely dollars per call. Include quality failures, human review, fallback calls, and latency-driven overprovisioning. A model that answers correctly on the first attempt can be cheaper than a lower-rate model that triggers retries or escalation.

How do I build a low, expected, and high estimate?

Before production telemetry exists, a range is more honest than a single precise-looking number. Make the assumptions explicit and vary the workload inputs that could move the bill, rather than applying an arbitrary percentage to one estimate.

  1. Choose the unit: calculate per request, per active user, and monthly totals if each answers a different planning question.
  2. List request types: separate materially different features, such as short questions and document-heavy tasks, and estimate each independently.
  3. Estimate volume: set monthly requests or users for low, expected, and high cases. State what “active user” means for the plan.
  4. Estimate tokens: record average input and output tokens per request type, keeping the two totals separate.
  5. Apply the exact rate card: use the chosen model’s input, output, cache, and context-tier rates for the relevant region and billing mode.
  6. Add non-token charges: estimate tool calls, retrieval storage, modalities, hosting, databases, vector storage, bandwidth, observability, support, and fixed fees.
  7. Document assumptions: record model name, rate-card version or access date, currency, geography, and billing mode with the estimate.
  8. Replace estimates with telemetry: once live usage exists, use observed token counts, calls, retries, and feature-level cost to update the scenarios.

Keep the scenarios as line-item calculations. For example, a high case may reflect more monthly requests, larger retrieved context, longer output, or more tool calls; showing which assumption changed makes the estimate actionable. Add a sensitivity check: calculate how the total changes if input tokens rise 25%, output tokens double, or tool calls occur on every request. This identifies the assumption worth measuring first.

How can I reduce the bill without hiding the trade-offs?

Cost controls work best when applied to the source of excess usage and checked against the quality, latency, or reliability the app needs. Track the impact by request type so that an improvement in one path does not conceal a regression elsewhere.

  • Trim prompts and retrieval: remove unnecessary instructions and retrieve only the context the task needs. This reduces input volume, though aggressive trimming can remove information the model needs.
  • Use caching where it fits: repeated prompt prefixes may be less expensive when provider cache rules apply. Measure actual cache eligibility and hits rather than assuming all repeated text is cached.
  • Route by task: use a lower-cost model for simple requests and reserve more expensive models for tasks that need their capabilities. Monitor quality and escalation rates as well as token spend.
  • Use batch processing for suitable work: asynchronous jobs may receive a discount, but batch processing is not a fit when a user must receive an immediate response.
  • Limit generated length: set output caps appropriate to the feature, since output tokens can have a different and higher rate than input.
  • Watch retries and tool loops: detect repeated failures or tool calls that add cost without completing the task; cap or recover from loops deliberately.
  • Attribute usage: track cost by model, feature, tenant, and request type so costly paths and unusually high-usage tenants can be identified.

Set budgets and alerts at the tenant, feature, and account level. A global monthly cap can hide one runaway integration until the invoice arrives. Guardrails such as maximum retrieved chunks, maximum tool iterations, output-token limits, and timeout-based fallbacks make the estimate enforceable, but each should have an explicit user-experience fallback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I monitor after launch?

Production measurements turn a planning estimate into an operating budget. Capture enough detail to explain a change in the invoice, not just a monthly total.

  • Cache-eligible, cached, and cache-write usage where the provider reports them.
  • Tool calls, retrieval volume or storage, and modality-specific usage.
  • Requests, retries, failed requests, and tool-loop behavior.
  • Costs grouped by feature, tenant, and time period.
  • Non-model expenses for compute, databases, vector storage, monitoring, and bandwidth.

Reconcile observed totals with invoices and the applicable rate card. If actual cost diverges from the estimate, identify whether the cause is traffic, token size, routing, retries, pricing, or infrastructure before changing the model or setting a user-facing limit. Preserve the model identifier, region, currency, access date, and billing mode with each report so a later comparison is meaningful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I include free allowances in my LLM budget?

Yes, but treat an allowance as a billing adjustment, not as proof that the usage has no cost. Verify its scope and duration in the applicable rate card, and keep the gross usage estimate visible so the projected bill changes cleanly if the allowance no longer applies.

Should I include taxes and currency conversion in an API cost estimate?

Keep them as separate invoice-level assumptions because tax treatment and currency conversion depend on the provider, account, and billing location. Do not mix those amounts into a model’s per-token rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I refresh an LLM cost estimate?

Recheck it when you change the model, region, billing channel, or feature mix, and compare it with invoices on your normal budgeting cycle. Since provider rates and billing rules can change, retain the rate-card access date with each estimate.

What is the most common mistake in an LLM cost calculation?

Counting only the visible answer. Include system prompts, conversation history, retrieved text, every orchestration call, retries, tool calls, cache writes, and non-model infrastructure. Separate request types so a document-heavy workflow does not disappear inside a low blended average.

How do I calculate a price for an LLM feature or subscription plan?

Estimate the expected cost per active user from requests, token volumes, tools, and infrastructure, then model heavy-user percentiles and support overhead. Add a margin for uncertainty and set quotas or fair-use limits that match the assumptions. Revisit the price when telemetry shows the actual distribution of usage.

Is a cheaper model always the cheapest option?

No. Compare effective cost per successful task, including output-heavy pricing, context tiers, regional multipliers, tool fees, retries, quality failures, fallback calls, and the infrastructure needed to operate it. A higher-rate model can cost less when it completes work reliably in one call.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The Bottom Line

Build the estimate from measured input and output tokens, then add cache, tool, modality, regional, hosting, retrieval, and operating charges. Show low, expected, and high cases, record the exact rate-card assumptions, and replace them with feature-level telemetry as soon as the app is live.
