There is no single “cost per AI model” number. A defensible production estimate starts with your measured workload—requests per day, peak requests per second, input and output size, concurrency, latency, region, uptime and redundancy—then maps it to the provider’s billing unit. Calculate model charges first, and add the infrastructure and operating costs that keep the service available.
For a token-priced API, the core calculation is monthly_model_cost = (input_tokens/1,000,000 × input_rate) + (cached_input_tokens/1,000,000 × cached_rate) + (output_tokens/1,000,000 × output_rate). For self-hosting, benchmark throughput and latency on the exact model and hardware, size for peak demand and failover, and multiply the required runtime by the instance price. The sections below show how to do that for APIs, provisioned capacity, serverless inference and dedicated GPUs.
What should a production AI cost estimate include?
A production estimate is a workload model, not a guess based on a model’s parameter count. It should explain how much traffic you expect, what each request contains, the service level you promise and every recurring cost needed to meet that promise.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Cost layer | What to measure | Why it changes the estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Model execution | Input, cached-input and output tokens; image, audio or video units; or compute seconds | This is the variable charge on token, unit or time-based services |
| Capacity | Peak RPS, concurrency, throughput, GPU count, minimum replicas and idle time | Capacity must cover bursts, not just the daily average |
| Reliability | Uptime target, standby copies, failover region and autoscaling floor | Redundancy can leave paid capacity idle during normal traffic |
| Platform services | Retrieval, vector database, tool calls, storage, networking, load balancing and egress | These costs are outside the model’s list price |
| Operations | Logging, monitoring, evaluation, on-call and engineering support | People and observability remain costs even when inference is inexpensive |
Report both a monthly total and unit economics. At minimum, show dollars per request, per 1,000 input tokens, per 1,000 output tokens and per successful task. A monthly figure without its traffic assumptions is not portable to another team or season.

How do I define the workload before looking at prices?
Write down the demand and service objectives first. Prices become meaningful only after the usage unit is known.
1. Forecast demand and traffic shape
- Requests per day and per month.
- Peak requests per second (RPS), burst duration and concurrency.
- Seasonality, launches, scheduled batch jobs and retry behavior.
- The share of interactive requests versus asynchronous or batch work.
- Expected growth and a high-demand case, not just the central forecast.
Average requests per day can hide an unserviceable peak. For example, a low-volume support assistant may still need several simultaneous replicas if a short business-hour spike must meet a strict latency target.
2. Measure each payload
- Average and high-percentile input tokens.
- Cached input tokens, if the platform discounts repeated context.
- Average and high-percentile output tokens.
- Images, audio, video, embeddings or other billable units.
- Tool calls, retrieval results and additional model passes per user task.
Use production-like prompts and outputs. A long system prompt, retrieved documents or an agent loop can multiply token use even when the visible user message is short.
3. Set the service target
- p95 or p99 end-to-end latency and, for streaming systems, time to first token (TTFT).
- Required uptime and the recovery policy after a failure.
- Deployment region, data-residency rules and any cross-region failover.
- Maximum queueing time and whether requests may be delayed into a batch.
These decisions determine how much capacity must be paid for. A workload that can queue overnight has a different cost structure from one that must answer interactively.
How do I calculate the cost of a token-priced API?
Separate input, cached-input and output usage, convert each to the provider’s pricing unit, and multiply by the corresponding rate. Current pricing tables commonly state rates per 1 million tokens, even though older guidance may describe pay-as-you-go prices per 1,000 tokens.
The basic monthly formula
monthly_model_cost = (input_tokens/1,000,000 × input_rate) + (cached_input_tokens/1,000,000 × cached_rate) + (output_tokens/1,000,000 × output_rate)
Use the same period for all token counts. If your telemetry records tokens per request, calculate monthly tokens as requests per month multiplied by the average tokens per request, then split the result into input, cached-input and output categories.
Worked structure with your own rates
- Count monthly requests, including expected retries.
- Multiply requests by measured average input, cached and output tokens.
- Divide each token total by 1,000,000 when the pricing table is denominated per million tokens.
- Multiply each category by its current regional/model rate.
- Add charges for image, audio, embedding or moderation calls that are separate from the main completion.
Keep rates in a dated configuration file or spreadsheet rather than embedding them in application code. Provider catalogs and regional prices change, so re-check the applicable pricing page immediately before approving a budget.
Why cached input changes the result
Repeated instructions, conversation history or retrieved context may qualify for a cached-input rate. Estimate the cache-hit percentage from logs instead of assuming every repeated token is discounted. Show both the hit-rate assumption and the uncached case in sensitivity analysis.

From model charge to cost per task
A user-visible task can invoke several models and tools. Divide the complete task bill—including retrieval, reranking, tool calls and any failed retries—by successful tasks, not merely by the number of API responses. This reveals why a seemingly cheap completion can still produce an expensive workflow.
How should I estimate provisioned-throughput or reserved capacity?
Provisioned services charge for capacity you commit to, so utilization is as important as the nominal unit price. Azure’s documented approach estimates each request from prompt tokens plus max_tokens, then corrects the estimate with actual token counts after completion.
Set max_tokens realistically
If the limit is far above the expected generation length, the reserved-capacity estimate can exceed real demand. Set max_tokens close to the observed generation requirement, while leaving enough room for legitimate long responses. Revisit the setting when prompt or output distributions change.
Model utilization, not just capacity
- Determine the provisioned units needed for peak concurrency and latency.
- Estimate the fraction of those units used during normal, low and high periods.
- Include minimum commitments that remain billed when traffic falls.
- Price additional units required for planned maintenance or failover.
A provisioned deployment can be economical for steady, predictable traffic and wasteful for sporadic workloads. Compare its committed monthly cost with a pay-as-you-go scenario using the same request trace.
How do I size and price self-hosted GPU inference?
Self-hosting requires a benchmark of the exact model, quantization, context length, batch size and serving stack. Do not select a GPU from parameter count alone.
Benchmark the service you will actually run
- Prepare representative prompts, context lengths and output limits.
- Test the intended quantization and serving runtime.
- Run at the concurrency expected during the peak window.
- Record throughput in requests per second and tokens per second.
- Record time to first token (TTFT), p95 latency and queueing behavior.
- Repeat with longer contexts and worst-case outputs.
AWS identifies RPS for throughput and TTFT for latency as primary indicators of an inference setup’s capability. Use those measurements to determine GPU count and instance type, rather than relying on a vendor’s benchmark from a different model or batch size.
Convert the benchmark into a monthly compute bill
For each instance type, calculate:
compute_cost = hourly_instance_price × hours_running × number_of_instances
Then multiply by an availability factor that reflects the capacity you keep running for headroom, rolling deployments and failover. If two replicas are required for availability, the second replica is part of the baseline cost even when it serves little traffic.
Non-GPU costs to add
- Standby replicas and the minimum autoscaling floor.
- Model and container storage, snapshots and image registries.
- Inter-zone or cross-region networking and data transfer.
- Load balancers, gateways and TLS termination.
- Logs, metrics, traces, GPU telemetry and retention storage.
- On-call coverage, patching, capacity planning and model-update work.
For a fair comparison, include the engineering time needed to operate the cluster. A lower hourly GPU price can be outweighed by the labor required to keep drivers, runtimes and autoscaling reliable.

How is an imported custom model billed on Amazon Bedrock?
For an imported custom model, AWS documents a capacity-unit formula based on running model copies and five-minute billing windows:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Total cost = Number of running model copies × Number of CMUs per copy × billing rate per CMU per min × ((Number of 5-min windows)/60)
The CloudWatch ModelCopy metric supplies the number of running copies. The model details or API provide CMUs per copy and the applicable rate. Billing starts in five-minute windows after the first successful inference call.
Practical Bedrock worksheet
- Read the peak and minimum
ModelCopyvalues from CloudWatch for the period you are budgeting. - Record CMUs per copy for the imported model configuration.
- Look up the current regional CMU-per-minute rate.
- Count five-minute windows in which copies are running, including idle windows caused by your scaling policy.
- Apply the formula and add storage, requests, networking and observability charges.
Because the window starts after a successful inference call, a service that scales to zero has a different cost pattern from one that keeps copies warm. State that scaling behavior in the estimate.
How do I price serverless inference?
Serverless inference is usually charged for execution time or another per-request unit, so multiply measured duration by the hardware’s rate and then add platform extras.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Hugging Face serverless example
The official pricing example uses a request that runs for 10 seconds on hardware priced at $0.00012 per second. The inference charge is $0.0012 for that request (10 × 0.00012). This is an example calculation, not a universal rate: your hardware, runtime and request duration may differ.
Serverless calculation steps
- Measure execution seconds for representative requests, including cold starts if they are billed or affect retries.
- Multiply seconds by the current per-second hardware rate.
- Multiply by expected requests and retry volume.
- Add storage and data-transfer charges where the service applies them.
- Check concurrency limits and queueing; a low per-second price does not guarantee the required peak throughput.
Serverless is attractive for irregular traffic because you do not pay for an always-on GPU floor. Dedicated endpoints can be easier to tune for consistent latency, but their estimate is based on GPU instance hours.
What is the cost formula for a dedicated inference endpoint?
For a dedicated endpoint, start with the instance-hour calculation:
endpoint_cost = hourly_rate × hours_running × number_of_instances

Use the instance count proven by your RPS, TTFT and p95 tests. Add storage and data transfer when applicable, then include monitoring, logging, load balancing and standby capacity. If the endpoint autoscaling policy has a nonzero minimum, price that minimum for every hour in the month even when requests are absent.
How do API, provisioned, serverless and self-hosted options compare?
Compare options against one identical workload and service target. A low variable rate can lose to a high idle commitment, while a cheap GPU can lose to the labor and redundancy needed to operate it.
| Deployment model | Main billing unit | Best fit | Cost risks to test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pay-as-you-go API | Input, cached-input and output tokens or other request units | Fast launch and variable traffic | Long prompts, long outputs, retries, tool loops and provider price changes |
| Provisioned throughput | Committed capacity units | Steady traffic with predictable latency | Under-utilization, oversized max_tokens, minimum commitments and failover capacity |
| Serverless inference | Execution seconds or request time | Spiky or low-duty-cycle workloads | Cold starts, concurrency limits, duration variance, storage and egress |
| Dedicated endpoint | GPU instance hours | Consistent traffic and controlled serving | Idle floor, scaling lag, model storage, networking and standby replicas |
| Self-hosted GPU fleet | Instance hours plus platform and labor | Specialized models, residency control or high sustained utilization | Benchmark mismatch, driver/runtime work, redundancy and engineering support |
| Imported custom model capacity | CMUs per copy per minute in five-minute windows | Managed custom-model serving with explicit capacity | Warm copies, window rounding, copy count and CMU rate changes |
Use the same comparison axes for every row: unit price, fixed idle cost, peak capacity, p95 latency or TTFT, scaling behavior, availability cost, residency, operational labor and lock-in.

Most overruns come from demand or capacity assumptions rather than arithmetic errors.
Underestimating output and context
Generation length can vary widely by task. Track p50, p95 and maximum output, and model a long-output case. Retrieved documents and conversation history should be counted as input tokens on every request that includes them.
Ignoring retries and failed tasks
Timeouts, rate limits and tool failures can trigger another model call. Multiply your forecast by an observed or deliberately conservative retry factor, and report the cost per successful task separately.

Leaving out the reliability tax
Multi-zone or multi-region failover, rolling upgrades and a nonzero autoscaling floor all consume paid capacity. Put these replicas in the baseline rather than treating them as optional contingencies.
Comparing unlike service levels
A serverless estimate with relaxed latency cannot be compared directly with a dedicated endpoint promising low TTFT. Hold latency, uptime, residency and throughput constant before declaring one option cheaper.
How should I present uncertainty and price changes?
Publish a range with its drivers instead of a single false-precision number. At minimum, include low, expected and high cases for traffic, output length, cache-hit rate and capacity utilization.

What should a final production cost report contain?
A useful report lets another engineer reproduce the number and decide whether the deployment meets its objectives.
- A one-line workload definition with requests, tokens or compute seconds and peak RPS.
- The model and serving configuration used in the benchmark.
- The pricing unit, rate, region and date.
- Monthly model, infrastructure, platform and operations subtotals.
- Per-request, per-token and per-successful-task economics.
- Capacity and redundancy assumptions, including idle replicas.
- Low, expected and high sensitivity cases.
- Known exclusions, such as taxes or an unpriced internal labor pool.
- A trigger for recalculation when traffic, prompts, model versions or prices change.
There is no reliable industry-wide average monthly cost for running an AI model. Your measured workload and service objectives are the only defensible basis for a number.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I include model training costs in a production inference estimate?
Only if the decision covers the full model lifecycle. Keep training, fine-tuning and one-time evaluation in a separate capital or project section so recurring inference economics remain comparable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How often should a production AI cost model be updated?
Recalculate whenever the model version, prompt template, retrieval policy, traffic pattern or scaling configuration changes. Even without a deployment change, schedule a periodic review because provider rates and regional surcharges can move.
How can I allocate shared AI costs to products or teams?
Tag requests with a product, tenant or workflow identifier and aggregate tokens, execution seconds and tool calls by that tag. Allocate shared GPU or provisioned-capacity costs using measured peak capacity or reserved share, and document the rule so teams can reproduce it.
Do streaming responses cost less than non-streaming responses?
Streaming changes delivery timing, not necessarily the number of tokens generated. Compare the same input and output usage; then account separately for any timeout, cancellation or partial-response behavior in your platform.
