The dependable way to price an AI agent in an isolated microVM is to cost each session state separately: active CPU, active memory, snapshot reads and writes, suspended-state storage, launcher and control-plane calls, logs, networking, and model/API usage. Multiply each measured quantity by the rate for the region and architecture you will use. Report median (p50) and high-end (p95) session duration, peak concurrency, and several idle-time scenarios; an average alone can hide burst costs and quota pressure. Keep model inference and token charges in their own line so infrastructure efficiency is not mistaken for the cost of the agent’s reasoning.

The example AWS rates cited below show why state matters. In us-east-1, one 1-vCPU/2-GB session active for 30 minutes and suspended for eight hours is published at $0.0669, versus $1.0719 if it remains running, a 93.8% difference for that particular workload shape.

What exactly should an AI-agent microVM estimate include?

A useful estimate follows one billing period, such as a day or month, and accounts for every state transition and supporting service. The core equation is:

Running CPU and memory are metered only while a session is executing. A suspended session may stop those compute meters while retaining its state, so the estimate must add the storage occupied by its image or snapshot and any snapshot read or write operations. Termination releases resources, but a later session can create a new launch and snapshot transition. Launcher functions, API requests, parameter lookups, observability, and network transfer are not included in the microVM’s CPU and memory line.

Model inference, token, embedding, or tool-provider charges belong in a separate section of the budget. Combining them with sandbox costs makes it impossible to tell whether a change improved infrastructure utilization or merely changed the agent’s model usage.

Which measurements do I need before multiplying rates?

Instrument a representative sample of sessions before committing to a capacity number. Record these fields for every session:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Active seconds: wall-clock time in the running state, including any tool calls performed while the guest is active.
  • Suspended seconds: time retained between turns or requests while compute is stopped.
  • Allocated vCPUs and memory: the provisioned values, not just the average utilization inside the guest.
  • Snapshot bytes written and read: include launch, suspend, resume, and any migration transition that causes snapshot I/O.
  • Suspended or image gigabyte-months: the retained state multiplied by the fraction of a month it exists.
  • Session count and peak concurrency: the total number of sessions and the maximum simultaneous running count in the period.
  • Control-plane calls: launcher invocations, API Gateway requests, parameter-store calls, and other orchestration operations.
  • Logs and network traffic: bytes retained and transferred, with the retention period and region recorded.
  • Model/API usage: input and output tokens, model calls, and external tool charges, kept separate from sandbox measurements.

Store p50 and p95 values for active duration, suspended duration, and memory footprint. Also retain the largest observed concurrency. A mean session can look cheap while a p95 burst exhausts a quota or forces expensive capacity; the tail is what determines whether the design survives production traffic.

What published rates can I use for a first AWS estimate?

The following figures are an AWS Builder Center us-east-1 example accessed in 2026. They are regional rates for estimation, not a universal price list; confirm the current regional page and service quotas before using them in a contract or forecast.

Meter Published example rate How to apply it
vCPU while running $0.0000276944 per vCPU-second Allocated vCPUs × active seconds
Memory while running $0.0000036667 per GB-second Allocated GB × active seconds
Snapshot write $0.0038 per GB GB written during launches, suspends, or transitions
Snapshot read $0.00155 per GB GB read during resumes or launches
Suspended or image storage $0.08 per GB-month Retained GB × fraction of a month retained

These values do not cover launcher compute, API Gateway requests, Parameter Store calls, Lambda invocations, logs, networking, or model APIs. AWS explicitly describes MicroVM billing as runtime per session plus standard charges for API Gateway requests, Parameter Store API calls, and Lambda invocations used by the launcher. Add each of those meters using the applicable regional rate rather than hiding them in a percentage allowance.

How do I calculate the cost of one session?

Use separate lines for running resources and each snapshot or storage operation. For a session with v vCPUs, g GB of memory, and t active seconds:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. cpu_cost = v × t × cpu_rate
  2. memory_cost = g × t × memory_rate
  3. snapshot_cost = (write_GB × write_rate) + (read_GB × read_rate)
  4. suspended_storage_cost = suspended_GB_month × storage_rate
  5. Add launcher, control-plane, observability, network, and model/API lines.
  6. Sum the lines for the session, then multiply by the expected session count.

If a workload has multiple running phases, calculate each phase with its own allocated resources. Do not use the maximum allocation for the entire session unless the microVM really holds that allocation throughout; conversely, do not use in-guest utilization to reduce a provider meter that is based on allocated vCPUs or memory.

What does a worked 1-vCPU, 2-GB example look like?

AWS publishes a specific workload shape: 30 minutes active, followed by eight hours suspended, using 1 vCPU and 2 GB of memory. Under the stated us-east-1 rates, the published total is $0.0669 per session. The same tenant kept running for the full period is published at $1.0719, or 93.8% more for that shape.

Compute the active portion

Thirty minutes is 1,800 active seconds. The CPU line is approximately 1 × 1,800 × $0.0000276944 = $0.04985. The memory line is approximately 2 × 1,800 × $0.0000036667 = $0.01320. Together, running CPU and memory contribute about $0.06305 before snapshot and retained-state charges.

Account for the suspended period

The eight-hour pause does not add running CPU or memory in this example, but the published total is higher than the active compute subtotal because snapshot reads or writes and retained storage still apply. The exact split depends on the snapshot size and transitions for the implementation; do not infer a universal per-session storage amount from this one result.

Compare with an always-running design

The always-on figure is an AWS workload example, not a guarantee of savings for every agent. It demonstrates the decision boundary: long gaps between turns favor suspension when snapshot overhead is small, while a continuously busy session may make an always-running container or host more economical.

How should running, suspended, and terminated states be priced?

Model the lifecycle as three distinct states rather than assigning one hourly rate to an entire session.

Running

While running, charge allocated vCPU-seconds and GB-seconds. Measure when the microVM actually enters and leaves the running state, including startup and shutdown behavior defined by your platform. If a request queue leaves a guest idle but still running, that idle interval remains part of the active-state meter.

Suspended

Suspension can stop compute while retaining guest state. Charge the retained image or snapshot in GB-months and every read or write caused by suspend and resume. Frequent short turn gaps can make snapshot I/O material even when the total suspended time is modest; long gaps generally create a stronger case for suspension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Terminated

Termination releases compute and avoids idle runtime charges. A later turn may require a fresh launch, a snapshot read, and a new write, so compare the avoided idle compute with the transition cost. Use observed turn-gap distributions to set an idle threshold instead of choosing an arbitrary timeout.

How do idle time and concurrency change the forecast?

Build at least three scenarios: a low-idle case, the p50 observed gap, and a high-idle or p95 case. Keep the number of sessions, active seconds, and snapshot size fixed while varying only suspended time so the sensitivity is easy to explain. Then run a separate concurrency scenario using the largest simultaneous running count; this exposes quota pressure that a monthly average conceals.

For a monthly forecast, sum per-session running and transition costs, then add the maximum or provisioned control-plane and observability capacity required for the burst. A design with low average utilization can still need enough launcher throughput, memory quota, and snapshot bandwidth for the peak. Present both expected spend and the p95 scenario to finance and engineering.

What platform limits must be checked before extrapolating?

Resource and lifetime limits can invalidate an otherwise correct arithmetic model. The cited AWS architecture describes Lambda MicroVM allocations from 0.25 to 4 vCPU and 0.5 to 8 GB of memory, with up to 4× vertical scaling without recreating the environment. The same documentation lists a maximum total MicroVM lifetime of 8 hours, including suspended time, and a 32 GB native disk for Lambda MicroVMs. Its compute-options table lists a 2 GB image limit for AgentCore Runtime.

Check, for the exact service and region:

  • Maximum lifetime, including whether suspended time counts.
  • Minimum and maximum vCPU, memory, disk, and image sizes.
  • Concurrent MicroVM, snapshot, launcher, and API quotas.
  • Whether a resume is possible after termination or requires a new launch.
  • Supported regions and any differences in storage or network pricing.
  • Whether logs, snapshots, and images have separate retention limits.

Never extrapolate the 30-minute/eight-hour example to a larger image or a different region without replacing every affected rate and quota.

How much overhead does Firecracker add?

Firecracker’s current specification reports virtual-machine-manager memory overhead of ≤5 MiB and guest /sbin/init startup of ≤125 ms under its stated benchmark configuration. These are engineering characteristics, not a promise that an entire agent session will launch in 125 ms: image loading, snapshot reads, networking, guest initialization, and the launcher can dominate the observed time.

Include the VMM overhead when sizing host capacity, especially if many small guests run concurrently. Include launch latency and snapshot I/O in the cost model only when they create billable reads, writes, or extra running seconds; do not convert a benchmark latency into a price without the provider’s meter.

Which architecture is most economical for a given workload?

Compare architectures on isolation, utilization, state handling, limits, and control-plane work. The right answer depends on the shape of the agent, not on the sandbox label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Isolation boundary Active versus idle behavior Startup and state Limits and charges to verify
Per-session microVMs Dedicated virtual-machine boundary per session Strong fit for bursty sessions with long idle gaps; suspend can stop compute State can be retained in snapshots; resume adds read cost and latency vCPU, memory, image, disk, lifetime, snapshot, concurrency, and launcher charges
Managed AgentCore runtime Managed isolated runtime; exact boundary is service-defined Managed suspension and scaling depend on service behavior Use the documented image and lifetime limits; the cited table lists a 2 GB image limit Service runtime, image, duration, quota, API, and observability pricing
Fargate tasks Task-level isolation managed by the container service Can be wasteful for long idle periods if tasks remain allocated Task launch and persistent state require separate design Task vCPU/memory duration, storage, network, launch, and logging rates
Containers on shared nodes Container and host-kernel boundary Often efficient at continuous utilization; idle capacity is paid at node level Fast local startup, but state retention and host packing are your responsibility Node hours, unused capacity, orchestration, storage, networking, and isolation requirements
Self-managed Firecracker MicroVM boundary operated by your team Can suspend or terminate aggressively, but host utilization is your responsibility Flexible snapshot lifecycle; engineering work handles images, hosts, and recovery Hosts, disks, snapshots, control plane, operations, patching, and quota headroom

MicroVMs are attractive when sessions are bursty and idle gaps are long enough to outweigh snapshot transitions. Always-on containers or hosts can win when utilization is continuous and the operational cost of managing suspension exceeds the saved compute.

How do I build a repeatable cost spreadsheet or service?

  1. Choose the billing window and region. Record whether the forecast is daily, monthly, or per customer and keep all rates in that region’s currency.
  2. Export session events. Capture running, suspended, resumed, and terminated timestamps, allocated resources, snapshot bytes, and session identifiers.
  3. Calculate per-session meters. Apply the CPU, memory, snapshot-read, snapshot-write, and suspended-storage formulas separately.
  4. Add shared services. Attribute launcher invocations, API Gateway requests, parameter lookups, logs, network transfer, and other control-plane usage to the same window.
  5. Join model usage without blending it. Report inference and token spend as its own subtotal, then show an optional all-in figure.
  6. Produce p50, p95, and peak views. Include active duration, suspended duration, snapshot size, and concurrency, not just cost per average session.
  7. Run sensitivity cases. Vary idle threshold, image size, session volume, and concurrency to reveal which assumption moves the result most.
  8. Reconcile to the provider bill. Investigate any difference by meter rather than applying an unexplained percentage adjustment.

Keep the raw event data alongside the aggregate report. That makes it possible to explain a cost spike caused by a burst of resumes, a larger image, or a change in turn-gap behavior.

What common estimation mistakes produce bad numbers?

  • Using only average duration: p95 sessions and peak concurrency can determine both spend and quota failures.
  • Treating suspended time as free: retained snapshots and snapshot I/O still cost money.
  • Ignoring transition frequency: many short suspend/resume cycles can cost more in reads and writes than one long pause.
  • Mixing model and sandbox spend: a cheaper model call can mask a worse isolation design, or vice versa.
  • Assuming allocated resources follow utilization: use the provider’s billing meter, usually the provisioned vCPU and memory, unless documentation says otherwise.
  • Forgetting control-plane charges: launcher functions, API requests, parameter access, logs, and networking can matter at high session counts.
  • Copying a rate across regions or dates: rates, quotas, supported regions, and features are volatile.
  • Exceeding a lifetime or image limit: forced termination or rejected images create relaunches that the original spreadsheet never counted.

When should I suspend, terminate, or keep a session running?

Use measured turn gaps and transition costs to choose a policy. Keep a session running when the next turn is likely to arrive before the saved snapshot operations and relaunch latency justify suspension. Suspend when the gap is long enough to remove meaningful CPU and memory charges while preserving state. Terminate when the expected remaining idle period is longer than the value of retaining state or when the platform lifetime limit is approaching.

Implement the policy as an explicit state machine with timestamps for every transition. That produces both operational behavior and the exact fields required for billing attribution, and it prevents an unobserved queue or health check from quietly keeping a supposedly idle microVM running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the practical decision rule?

Start with the per-session equation, measure real state durations and snapshot sizes, and price the p50, p95, and peak-concurrency cases. Use suspension for bursty sessions only after verifying image, lifetime, quota, and snapshot behavior; use continuously allocated containers or hosts when utilization is steady and transition overhead dominates. Refresh regional rates and service limits at least every 30 days, because the cited AWS figures and product constraints can change.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a microVM cost estimate be refreshed?

Refresh the rates, quotas, supported regions, and feature assumptions at least every 30 days, and sooner after a provider pricing or service-limit announcement. Keep the original assumptions with each forecast so a later change can be traced to a specific meter.

What happens when a session reaches the platform’s maximum lifetime?

A lifetime limit that includes suspended time means an apparently idle session can still expire. Plan a checkpoint or controlled termination before that limit, then include the resulting snapshot read, launch, and any state-reconstruction work in the estimate.

How should failed launches appear in the budget?

Count launcher attempts and any snapshot reads or writes even when a guest never serves a user turn, then separate those failures from successful-session cost. A rising failed-launch rate is both a cost signal and an operational defect, so report it beside—not inside—the average session figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should finance receive one blended cost-per-agent number?

Provide infrastructure cost per session and model/API cost per session as separate subtotals, followed by an optional blended total. This preserves visibility into whether a change affects isolation efficiency, orchestration overhead, or the agent’s inference workload.
