The reliable way to estimate GPU capacity is to measure your model at the prompt lengths, precision, batching and latency target you will actually serve, then size for peak token throughput—not average daily traffic. First prove that the model fits in GPU memory, divide peak demand by measured per-GPU throughput, round up, and add capacity for failover, maintenance and growth. Cost is the resulting GPU count multiplied by runtime and price, plus host, storage, networking, orchestration, monitoring, licensing, support, idle time and retries. On-demand GPUs are simplest; reservations or commitments improve capacity assurance and predictable pricing, while Spot capacity can cut accelerator prices substantially when interruptions are acceptable.
What information do I need before sizing GPUs?
Write down the workload and service-level objectives before looking at GPU models. “One GPU per model” is not a sizing method: different use cases can require radically different footprints, and a chatbot, batch embedding job and image generator stress memory, compute and latency in different ways.
Workload definition
- Model: family, parameter count, architecture and whether you will serve one model or several.
- Precision and format: FP32, FP16, BF16, INT8 or another quantization. Precision changes both memory use and throughput.
- Context and token mix: maximum and typical input tokens, expected output tokens, and the proportion of short versus long requests.
- Traffic: requests per second at normal and peak periods, daily active users, requests per user, burst duration and expected growth.
- Concurrency: simultaneous requests, streaming connections and any queueing limit.
- Latency SLO: time to first token (TTFT), intertoken latency, total response time and the percentile you promise (for example, p95).
- Availability SLO: whether a GPU, host, zone or regional failure must be tolerated without dropping capacity.
- Deployment constraints: region, accelerator availability, framework, batching policy, cache hit rate, data residency and whether work can be interrupted.
NVIDIA’s inference-sizing guidance identifies DAUs, concurrency, input and output token lengths, cache hit rate, TTFT, intertoken latency, requests per DAU and contract length as important inputs. Treat those as measured variables, not assumptions hidden in a spreadsheet.
How do I convert users and requests into GPU throughput?
Translate user behavior into a peak rate of tokens and requests. Daily averages hide the bursts that determine queueing and the number of replicas you must keep online.

Calculate peak requests per second
Estimate the busiest sustained interval, not just a daily total:
peak requests/second = peak concurrent users × requests per user during the interval ÷ interval seconds
If you only know daily active users, apply an explicit peak-hour factor and validate it with production telemetry. Record the assumption so it can be replaced when real traffic arrives.

Calculate token demand
For a request with input tokens I and output tokens O:
peak tokens/second = peak requests/second × (I + O)
For decoder-only generation, input-prefill and output-generation costs are not identical. Benchmark both phases when your serving stack reports them separately. A long context can consume memory through the key-value (KV) cache even when output rates are modest.
Use concurrency as a check, not a substitute
Concurrency is approximately arrival rate multiplied by response time (Little’s Law). For example, 10 requests per second with a two-second average service time implies about 20 in-flight requests before queueing. Your benchmark must test the concurrency you expect at the latency percentile in your SLO; a high aggregate token rate at one request can conceal poor tail latency under many simultaneous streams.

How do I benchmark throughput on a candidate GPU?
Run a representative load test on each candidate configuration. The measured result—tokens per second while meeting TTFT, intertoken latency and error-rate targets—is the number that belongs in the capacity formula.
- Match production settings. Use the same model weights, precision, tokenizer, serving engine, GPU count, interconnect, batch limits, context lengths and sampling parameters.
- Build realistic request mixes. Include the distribution of input and output lengths, cache hits and misses, streaming behavior and any tool calls. Test both typical and worst-case context windows.
- Ramp concurrency. Increase simultaneous requests until you reach the latency or utilization limit. Record throughput, TTFT, intertoken latency, p50/p95/p99 response time, queue time, GPU memory and utilization.
- Repeat across conditions. Measure cold starts, warmed models, long-running batches, autoscaling events and at least one failure or restart path.
- Choose a safe operating point. Use the throughput at your latency SLO and a utilization target that leaves room for bursts. Do not divide demand by a vendor’s theoretical peak.
Keep a test record with GPU type, driver and framework versions, software settings, region and date. A result from one prompt length or one release is not a universal performance claim.
How many GPUs do I need for serving?
Once you have peak demand and measured throughput, divide and round up. Then add explicit headroom for failures, maintenance, traffic variation and growth.
base GPUs = ceiling(peak required throughput ÷ measured throughput per GPU)
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If a GPU sustains 1,500 tokens per second at your chosen latency target and peak demand is 12,000 tokens per second, the base requirement is ceiling(12,000 ÷ 1,500) = 8 GPUs. If you operate at a 70% utilization ceiling, use 1,050 effective tokens per second per GPU instead; the base becomes 12 GPUs.
Add the capacity your SLO requires
- Failover: add at least one replica or the number needed to survive a host, zone or GPU failure without violating latency.
- Maintenance: include capacity that lets you drain and upgrade a node without a service outage.
- Traffic headroom: apply a documented percentage or a separate surge pool for launches and promotions.
- Autoscaling delay: keep enough warm capacity to cover the time needed to start a VM, load weights and become ready.
For the 12-GPU example, adding one failover GPU and 20% growth headroom gives ceiling((12 + 1) × 1.20) = 16 GPUs. The arithmetic is illustrative; your measured throughput and SLO determine the real count.
Will the model fit in GPU memory?
Check memory before compute. A model that cannot fit, including runtime overhead and KV cache, will not become viable merely by adding a faster GPU.

Estimate the memory components
- Weights: parameter count multiplied by bytes per parameter. For example, unquantized BF16 weights require roughly two bytes per parameter before overhead.
- Activations: temporary tensors used during prefill and generation; their size depends on architecture, batch and sequence length.
- KV cache: memory retained for every active sequence. Longer contexts and higher concurrency can make this the dominant component.
- Framework and workspace: CUDA graphs, kernels, allocators, communication buffers and serving-engine overhead.
- Operating headroom: leave room for request variation, fragmentation, model updates and monitoring agents.
Use a memory budget such as weights + peak activations + KV cache at target concurrency + framework overhead ≤ usable GPU memory. “Usable” is less than the advertised capacity because the runtime and safety margin consume part of it.
When one GPU is not enough
If the budget exceeds one device, choose tensor parallelism, pipeline parallelism or a larger-memory accelerator. Sharding introduces inter-GPU communication, synchronization and topology requirements. Benchmark the complete multi-GPU replica: dividing a single-GPU result by four usually overstates throughput because of communication and load imbalance.
Which GPU specifications matter for an AI workload?
Memory capacity is the first filter, followed by measured throughput, latency, interconnect, availability and price. The capacities below are published configurations, not performance rankings.
| GPU and cited configuration | GPU memory | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA L4 in Google Cloud G2 | 24 GB GDDR6 per GPU | Whether the quantized or smaller model fits with KV-cache headroom; measured inference rate at your context length; regional availability. |
| NVIDIA H100 in Google Cloud A3 | 80 GB HBM3 per GPU | Single-replica memory fit, multi-GPU topology, sustained throughput and hourly price in the target region. |
| NVIDIA H200 in Google Cloud A3 Ultra | 141 GB HBM3e per GPU | Whether the extra memory avoids sharding, plus quota, availability and the cost of keeping that capacity utilized. |
| NVIDIA B200 in Google Cloud A4 | 180 GB HBM3e per GPU; A4 machine types provide 8 GPUs and 1,440 GB aggregate GPU memory | Whole-machine purchase constraints, interconnect scaling, reservation lead time and workload utilization. |
Do not select solely by memory. A smaller accelerator can be the lower-cost choice for a model that fits, while a larger-memory device can reduce the number of shards and simplify operations. Compare total cost per request or token at the latency SLO, not just the GPU-hour rate.
How much does an AI GPU workload cost per month?
Start with a transparent cost equation, then add every non-GPU component:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

monthly cost = GPU count × hours running × price per GPU-hour + host CPU/RAM + storage + network + orchestration + monitoring + licenses + support + idle time + retries
Use the actual billing granularity and month length for your provider. A 730-hour month is a convenient planning constant, not a promise about a calendar month.

Illustrative GPU-only calculation
Google Cloud’s cited pricing table lists an NVIDIA T4 at $0.35 per GPU-hour on the listed on-demand table. At 16 continuously running T4 GPUs and 730 hours, the accelerator line is 16 × 730 × $0.35 = $4,088 before VM, disk, network, management and tax costs. Regional and product availability must be checked before reusing that figure, and the listed price is not a quote for every machine type or location.
Measure unit economics
Report at least one workload-level metric:
cost per request = total hourly cost ÷ requests served per hourcost per 1,000 output tokens = total hourly cost × 1,000 ÷ output tokens per hourcost per image or training step = total run cost ÷ completed images or steps
Include rejected, retried and idle periods. A cheaper GPU with lower utilization can cost more per successful request than a faster one that stays busy.
Should I use on-demand, Spot, reservations or commitments?
The right price model depends on interruption tolerance, demand certainty and the cost of being unable to start capacity.
| Purchase model | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| On-demand | Variable production traffic, experiments and workloads that need immediate flexibility | Highest list price; capacity can still be constrained in a particular zone. |
| Spot | Checkpointed training, batch inference, asynchronous jobs and elastic surge capacity | Google Cloud reports discounts of 60–91% off corresponding on-demand prices for most machine types and GPUs, but prices are dynamic and resources can be reclaimed with 30 seconds’ notice. |
| Reservation | Production services that must obtain GPUs in a specific zone | Creates a capacity commitment; Google Cloud says reservations provide high assurance for zone-specific resources, including GPUs. |
| Committed-use discount | Predictable, continuously running accelerator demand | Requires a one- or three-year term. Documented accelerator-optimized resources can receive up to 37% off for one year or up to 55% off for three years, subject to provider terms. |
Apply discounts only to the eligible accelerator or machine price described by the provider. A commitment does not make unused GPUs free, and a Spot percentage is not a guaranteed monthly rate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I design capacity when demand is uncertain?
A core-and-flex plan usually balances reliability and cost. Keep a stable core on owned or reserved capacity for the baseline load, then add on-demand or Spot workers for surges, launches, backfills and experiments.
Size the stable core
Set the core to the traffic you must serve during a normal peak while meeting the availability SLO after a planned drain or single failure. Keep model weights warm when cold-start time would breach TTFT.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Design the elastic pool
Define queue thresholds that trigger scale-out, a maximum spend or GPU limit, and a scale-in delay long enough to avoid oscillation. Use on-demand workers when a surge is user-facing and interruption is unacceptable; use Spot workers for requests that can be retried or deferred.

Make interruption safe
- Checkpoint training and long batch jobs frequently enough to lose only an acceptable amount of work.
- Keep idempotent request IDs so a reclaimed worker can retry without duplicating side effects.
- Drain traffic, checkpoint state and remove the worker on the provider’s interruption signal; do not assume more than the documented 30-second Spot notice.
- Maintain a smaller on-demand safety pool if Spot capacity can disappear faster than replacement instances start.
What should a complete sizing worksheet contain?
Keep one versioned worksheet per model and region. Replace assumptions with measurements as soon as telemetry is available.
- Workload: model, precision, context limit, input/output token distributions, peak requests per second, concurrency, TTFT and intertoken-latency SLOs, availability target and growth horizon.
- Capacity: benchmark throughput per GPU at the target mix, utilization ceiling, base GPU count, failover allowance, maintenance allowance and surge headroom.
- Memory: weights, activations, KV cache at peak concurrency, framework overhead, usable memory and whether tensor or pipeline parallelism is required.
- Cost: GPU-hours, host CPU/RAM, storage, network ingress and egress, orchestration, monitoring, licenses, support, idle time and retries.
- Scenarios: on-demand baseline, Spot or preemptible case, reservation case, committed-use case and core-and-flex design.
- Validation: load-test date, software versions, region, failure behavior, autoscaling time and the telemetry that will trigger a re-size.
What common sizing mistakes make estimates wrong?
- Using daily averages: size from the busiest sustained interval and model bursts separately.
- Ignoring input length: long prompts increase prefill work and KV-cache memory even when output length is unchanged.
- Trusting theoretical specifications: use measured tokens per second at your precision, batch and latency target.
- Filling all memory: leave allocator, framework and traffic-variation headroom.
- Forgetting the host: each GPU adds to the instance cost in addition to the machine type; CPU, RAM, disks and network can be material.
- Dividing by the GPU count in a benchmark: multi-GPU scaling is limited by interconnect and synchronization.
- Counting only successful requests: include retries, rejected requests and time spent waiting for autoscaling.
- Assuming Spot is permanent: build recovery and a fallback path for reclamation.
- Ignoring regional supply: a spreadsheet is not capacity assurance. Check quota, zone availability and reservation requirements before committing to an SLO.
How often should GPU capacity and cost estimates be revisited?
Recalculate after any model, precision, context-window, serving-engine, traffic-pattern or pricing change. In production, review the worksheet against weekly peak traffic and latency telemetry; re-run a full representative load test before a major launch or model upgrade. Track cost per successful request or token alongside utilization, because a lower hourly bill can hide queueing, retries or an availability failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one GPU serve multiple AI models at the same time?
Yes, if the combined weights, KV caches, framework overhead and peak concurrency fit in memory and the scheduler can still meet each model’s latency SLO. Benchmark the mixed workload; separate single-model tests do not reveal contention or cache interference.
How much GPU memory does quantization save?
Moving from two bytes per parameter to one byte per parameter roughly halves the weight portion, but activations, KV cache and runtime overhead do not necessarily halve. Validate accuracy, memory fragmentation and throughput at the exact quantization method you plan to deploy.
Does autoscaling eliminate the need for spare GPUs?
No. New instances need time to obtain capacity, boot software, load weights and pass health checks. Keep warm capacity for the immediate peak and use autoscaling for demand that grows more slowly than that startup interval.
What is the difference between GPU memory and system RAM for inference?
Model weights and active tensors normally need GPU memory for fast execution; system RAM may hold staging data, offloaded layers and queues but can introduce transfer latency. Budget both, and verify that the serving framework’s offload behavior still meets your latency target.
