For a normal PDF preview, use an <iframe> that points directly to the PDF, then place a conventional open-or-download link beneath it. Give the frame a meaningful title, responsive width, a deliberate height, and lazy loading when the preview is below the fold. This uses the browser’s native PDF viewer with almost no application code.
Choose <object> when you need fallback HTML inside the element, PDF.js when you need a self-hosted and highly customizable interface, or Adobe PDF Embed API when you prefer a managed viewer with configurable controls. The right choice depends on fallback behavior, branding, programmatic control, security policy, and mobile requirements—not on a universal “best” element.
What is the simplest reliable way to embed a PDF in HTML?
An iframe is the practical default for an ordinary preview. Current browser engines provide native PDF renderers, so the page can point at the file without shipping a separate viewer. MDN identifies iframe as the top native choice because it supports attributes such as loading and referrerpolicy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

src='/files/guide.pdf'

loading="eager"
width='100%'
height='700'
style='border: 0;'>
</iframe>
<p><a href='/files/guide.pdf'>Open or download the PDF</a></p>
The src must be a URL that the visitor can actually request. The title tells screen-reader users what the nested browsing context contains. A width of 100% lets the frame follow its container, while the height prevents the viewer from collapsing into an unusably short strip. The external link is essential because an iframe cannot contain child fallback HTML and because some browsers, network policies, or authentication flows may still block the preview.

Use loading='lazy' for PDFs lower on a long page; omit it for a document that should appear immediately at the top. Set referrerpolicy deliberately when the PDF host has referrer requirements. Do not add an iframe sandbox automatically to a native PDF preview: the built-in viewer already sandboxes executable PDF content, and an extra sandbox can stop the viewer from loading.
How do iframe, object, and embed differ?
All three native elements can hand a PDF to the browser viewer, but they differ in fallback support and control attributes. For most sites, iframe offers the best balance; object is useful when an in-element fallback message matters; embed is a minimal, less capable option.
| Approach | Setup | Control | Fallback | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
iframe |
Minimal | Browser controls plus loading and referrerpolicy |
External link required | Most ordinary previews |
object |
Minimal | Browser controls | HTML can be placed inside the element | Preview with an in-element recovery message |
embed |
Minimal | Browser controls | None | Legacy or very minimal native embedding |
| PDF.js | More engineering | High; self-hosted and programmable | You build the recovery experience | Branded, consistent, or programmatic viewers |
| Adobe PDF Embed API | Vendor integration | Configurable managed viewer | Vendor-defined | Teams wanting a managed rich viewer |
Iframe and embed have been widely available across browsers since July 2015 according to MDN compatibility metadata. Availability does not guarantee that every PDF feature behaves identically: browser viewers can differ in annotation support, form handling, printing, and download controls.

When should I use object?
Use object when the page must show a message inside the embedding element if the preview cannot be rendered. The PDF URL goes in data, and type='application/pdf' declares the expected media type.
<object data='/files/guide.pdf' type='application/pdf' width='800' height='1200'>
<p>The PDF preview is unavailable. <a href='/files/guide.pdf'>Open the PDF</a>.</p>
</object>
Keep the fallback short and actionable. The browser may ignore the fallback when it successfully handles the PDF, so retain a separate visible link when users need an obvious download path in every environment.
Why is embed usually not the first choice?
embed accepts src, type, width, and height, and modern browsers can display a PDF in their built-in viewer. It cannot contain fallback child content and does not provide iframe’s loading-control attributes. If you use it, give it a concise title for assistive technology, but prefer iframe or object for a new implementation.

How do I make an embedded PDF responsive?
Set the frame width to 100% and control its height with CSS or a carefully chosen responsive value. A fixed height is often more predictable than a percentage height because percentage heights depend on a parent with an explicit height.

Apply the class to the iframe and keep it inside a container that does not overflow horizontally. Very short frames create nested scrolling that is difficult on touch screens; extremely tall frames can make keyboard navigation and page context awkward. Test portrait and landscape orientation, browser zoom, text selection, printing, and the viewer’s download control on the actual browsers your audience uses.
A PDF page is not automatically reflowable HTML. A landscape report, dense table, or scanned page may remain hard to read on a phone even when the outer frame is responsive. For critical instructions, place the essential content in semantic HTML and offer the PDF as the complete or printable companion.
How do I make an embedded PDF accessible?
Accessibility starts outside the PDF viewer. Identify the document with a visible heading or nearby explanatory text, label the iframe or embed with a meaningful title, and give users a normal link that bypasses the nested viewer.
- Use a descriptive title such as
Annual safety report (PDF), not a filename likedocument1. - Place the open-or-download link immediately after the preview so keyboard and screen-reader users can find it without exploring the viewer.
- Ensure the link text explains the action and document, for example “Open the 2026 safety report (PDF).”
- Check keyboard focus, tab order, zoom, text selection, download, and print controls in supported browsers.
- Provide an HTML alternative when the PDF contains information that mobile or assistive-technology users must consume.
The embedded viewer is a separate browsing context. Your page’s heading hierarchy and link still matter even when the PDF itself contains tagged text. A visually attractive frame does not repair an untagged or scanned PDF; remediate the document or provide equivalent HTML when the content is essential.

What security settings affect a PDF iframe?
First verify that the PDF URL is reachable with the intended authentication and cross-origin policy. A private document needs an access design—such as an authenticated session or an expiring URL—that matches how the viewer requests the file; hiding a public URL inside an iframe does not make it private.

Should I add sandbox to a native PDF iframe?
Usually no. Native browser PDF viewers already sandbox executable PDF content. MDN warns that adding sandbox can prevent the built-in viewer from loading, so only use it after testing the exact browser behavior and permissions your application requires.
Which Content Security Policy directive applies?
For an iframe, the PDF origin must be allowed by frame-src (or by the broader child-src policy where applicable). For object and embed, the relevant directive is object-src. Many sites set object-src 'none', which makes iframe the practical native option.
Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'self'; frame-src 'self' https://docs.example.test; object-src 'none'
Adjust the origins to your own deployment. Do not loosen the policy merely to make a failed embed work; identify whether the PDF is being loaded as a frame, an object, or through a JavaScript viewer and authorize only the required source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen is PDF.js a better choice than the native viewer?
Choose Mozilla PDF.js when you need a self-hosted interface, consistent controls across browsers, programmatic rendering, or deeper access to document information. It is more work than an iframe because you host the viewer assets, manage updates, and build the surrounding fallback and integration behavior.
PDF.js is organized into three layers:
- Core parses and interprets PDF binaries.
- Display exposes rendering and document-information APIs.
- Viewer supplies the ready-made user interface used by Firefox and related browser extensions.
The stable PDF.js release listed in Mozilla’s current getting-started documentation is 6.3.289 (documentation accessed in 2026). Prebuilt modern-browser files and CDN options are available, and the npm package is named pdfjs-dist. The project is licensed under Apache-2.0.
How do I deploy PDF.js correctly?
- Install or otherwise obtain the PDF.js distribution that matches your application and its license requirements.
- Serve the viewer, worker, and PDF over HTTP or HTTPS. The worker is not enabled for
file://URLs, so opening an HTML file directly from disk is not a valid production-style test. - Point the viewer at the document URL. If you use the viewer’s
?file=query parameter, URL-encode the PDF path, especially when it contains its own query string, spaces, or reserved characters. - Set the worker path and any asset paths according to the versioned distribution you installed, then test from a real web server with the same origin and headers used in deployment.
- Reskin or build upon the supplied viewer instead of shipping an unmodified copy. Mozilla describes the viewer as a starting point for sites that embed it.
For application code, PDF.js can load a URL or raw Uint8Array. A URL is simplest for public documents; a byte array is useful when your application has already authenticated and fetched the file. In either case, handle loading errors and retain a direct link so a viewer failure does not strand the reader.

When should I use Adobe PDF Embed API?
Adobe PDF Embed API is a managed JavaScript viewer for teams that want configurable appearance and functionality without implementing every viewer feature themselves. Adobe documents support for Windows Edge, Chrome, and Firefox; macOS Safari, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox; Android Chrome; and iOS Safari and Chrome.
It can reduce the amount of viewer code you maintain, but it introduces a vendor integration and its own availability, authentication, and policy considerations. Confirm current service terms, quotas, and any required client credentials before committing to it; the documentation establishes the service but does not establish a current referral or affiliate program.
Mobile behavior is not identical to desktop. Adobe notes that annotation tools are not supported on phones when using Full Window embed mode. If annotations are central to your workflow, test the exact mode and mobile devices you plan to support rather than assuming desktop parity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Why does my PDF iframe fail to load?
Most failures come from the URL, response headers, policy, or an over-restrictive embedding configuration. Work through the following branches in order.
The frame is blank or shows a browser error
- Open the PDF URL in a new tab. If it fails there, fix the URL, authentication, redirect, or server response before debugging the iframe.
- Confirm the server returns the PDF with an appropriate media type, normally
application/pdf, and that the response is not an HTML login page. - Check browser developer tools for a Content Security Policy violation. Authorize the PDF origin with
frame-srcfor iframe, or revise the appropriate object policy when using object or embed. - Remove an iframe
sandboxtemporarily and retest; it can block the native viewer. - Test the same URL in a supported browser. Native viewer features vary, so a problem limited to one engine may require a browser-specific fallback or a PDF.js viewer.
The viewer loads, but private documents do not
Inspect the network request made by the nested context. Cookies may not be sent under the required cross-site policy, a signed URL may have expired, or a redirect may lead to an endpoint that disallows framing. Design the authentication flow for the viewer request and expose the direct link only to users who are authorized to retrieve the file.
The PDF works on desktop but not on a phone
Check the frame height and orientation first; nested scrolling often looks like a failed load. Then test the PDF itself: large tables, scans, and fixed-layout pages may be technically rendered but functionally unreadable. Offer HTML for critical content or switch to a viewer whose mobile controls meet your needs.

What should I test before publishing an embedded PDF?
Use a small test matrix rather than checking only that the first page appears.
- Load the page while logged out, logged in, and with an expired document URL.
- Open the PDF link directly and inside the frame.
- Test keyboard-only navigation and confirm the frame title is announced.
- Use a screen reader to locate the heading, viewer, and download link.
- Try browser zoom, PDF zoom, text selection, printing, and downloading.
- Rotate a phone, resize a desktop window, and check for horizontal overflow.
- Review the network and console logs for CSP, CORS, mixed-content, authentication, and missing-worker errors.
- Verify that your policy still blocks unwanted object sources while permitting the intended frame source.
Which PDF embedding method should I choose?
Make the decision from the requirement that would be hardest to add later.
- Choose iframe for a straightforward preview of a directly reachable PDF with native browser controls.
- Choose object when an in-element fallback paragraph is important and your policy permits object content.
- Choose embed only when its minimal interface fits an existing integration; it has no child fallback and fewer loading controls.
- Choose PDF.js when you need self-hosting, a branded interface, programmatic rendering, or consistent behavior you can maintain yourself.
- Choose Adobe PDF Embed API when a managed, configurable viewer is preferable to operating your own viewer and its mobile limitations fit the product.
Whichever method you select, keep a normal PDF link outside the viewer. It is the simplest recovery path for blocked scripts, unsupported features, accessibility needs, and users who want to save the original file.

Can I embed a PDF stored on another domain?
Usually, but the remote server and your security policy must allow the request and framing pattern you use. A cross-origin URL can still fail because of authentication, redirects, CSP, or anti-framing headers, so test the actual response rather than relying on the URL alone.
How can I stop visitors from downloading an embedded PDF?
You cannot reliably prevent downloading when the browser must receive the PDF to display it. Hiding the viewer’s download button does not stop users from retrieving the network response, taking screenshots, or using browser tools; protect sensitive information with authorization and document-level controls instead.
Do PDFs need a special filename or extension to work in an iframe?
No special filename is required, but the server should return the correct PDF media type and a valid PDF response. A URL without a .pdf suffix can work, while a .pdf URL that returns an HTML error page will not render.
Why does an iframe show a download dialog instead of a preview?
The browser or server may be configured to download that response, or the document may be delivered with headers such as an attachment disposition. Check the response headers and the browser’s PDF-viewer settings; an application viewer such as PDF.js can provide a controlled interface when native behavior is unsuitable.
