Support wet books rather than lifting them by the cover or pages, then dry a small batch promptly with absorbent interleaving and moving air. If you cannot begin air-drying within two days, the Library of Congress advises preparing and freezing newly wet or moldy books as a holding step. Treat active mold, sewage-contaminated water, and rare or valuable books as cases for qualified help—not routine home cleanup.

Before handling wet books, make the area safe

Do not enter a flooded area until it is safe to do so. Separate unaffected books from wet ones, then sort damaged books by severity, replaceability, and value. Wet paper is fragile: support the entire book and its pages, keep a closed book fully supported, and avoid lifting it by its cover or inner pages. Do not force a book open, which can damage its spine.

Water that may contain sewage or other hazardous material calls for appropriate safety precautions and qualified advice. Extensive active mold also needs professional attention; avoid treating it as ordinary dampness. The National Park Service (NPS) advises seeking a conservator or recovery service for rare or valuable volumes, substantial mold, or a very large loss. Its guidance distinguishes several or dozens of books that may be manageable in-house from thousands better suited to a professional company. NPS wet-book guidance

If a book is muddy

NPS advises holding a muddy book tightly closed and rinsing its exterior with clean water, then gently pressing it between towels or blotters to remove excess moisture. Do not use this routine for water suspected of sewage or other hazardous contamination.

Air-dry a small batch carefully

Start promptly: NPS warns that mold may begin growing when objects remain damp for approximately 72 hours. This is a practical urgency marker, not a guaranteed safe window. If prompt drying is not feasible, freeze the books as described below.

  1. Cover a table with plastic and place absorbent towels on top. Lay a book on its side and insert paper towels or unprinted newspaper every 20–30 pages, following NPS guidance.
  2. Stand the damp, interleaved book on end on the absorbent towels and fan its pages slightly. Do not force it wide open.
  3. If the book cannot stand securely, lay it on its side and put blotters between every few pages instead.
  4. Replace saturated interleaving with clean, dry sheets. When changing sheets, reverse the book’s head-to-tail orientation.
  5. Keep air circulating in the room; use a dehumidifier if available. Continue replacing wet sheets as needed until the book is dry.

Air-drying takes hands-on attention and can distort books. For collections too large to manage this way, or for books with coated paper or water-sensitive inks, ask a conservator or recovery vendor about suitable options. NPS experimental comparisons cover specific test materials and conditions, not every book; see the NPS 2008 study of drying and sterilization protocols.

Freeze books you cannot dry promptly

The Library of Congress advises immediate air-drying when possible and preparing and freezing newly wet or moldy books if they cannot be air-dried within two days. NPS describes freezing as a way to stabilize books until drying can be undertaken in small batches.

  1. Gently shape each book without forcing it open.
  2. Wrap the cover and spine with wax paper, freezer paper, paper towels, or unprinted newspaper to help keep covers from sticking.
  3. Freeze the books until you can dry them. Freezing is a holding step, not a substitute for drying.

For books contaminated by mud, rust, or salt water, NEDCC search-result guidance says to rinse them before freezing. NEDCC also describes vacuum freeze-drying as a vendor treatment for wet books, coated paper, and water-sensitive inks. Its pages could not be directly accessed when this guidance was retrieved, so confirm the recommendations with NEDCC or a qualified conservator before applying them to a valuable or unusual item. Choose professional drying for difficult cases

Drying methods involve trade-offs in labor, distortion, suitability for paper types, and effects on paper strength. In its 2008 study using surrogate books and paper samples, NPS reported a 15% reduction in paper mechanical strength after thermal drying and 25% weakening after gamma irradiation. Air drying, vacuum freeze-drying, vacuum packing, and drying in a Vacme press with Zorbix had essentially no deleterious effect on paper mechanical strength in the tested samples. These results are specific to the materials and experimental conditions in the study; they do not predict the outcome for an individual book.

The same study notes that air drying is labor-intensive and can distort books; vacuum freeze-drying can be useful for large quantities and coated stock; and pressing during drying can reduce distortion. A book’s apparent flatness does not by itself establish that its paper is undamaged. For a collection, ask a conservator or recovery vendor to weigh batch size, available labor and freezer capacity, paper type, rarity, cost and vendor availability, likely distortion, and effects on paper permanence before selecting a treatment.

Store books only when they are dry

Do not seal damp books into storage. For valuable books, the Library of Congress recommends avoiding basements, attics, and garages, where temperature and relative humidity are poorly controlled and leaks or floods are more likely. For long-term storage, use an acid- and lignin-free box.

Polyethylene or polypropylene containers can provide secondary protection from water, but a plastic container in a high-humidity area can increase mold risk. Choose a dry storage location with stable conditions rather than relying on a sealed container to make a damp or humid space safe. Library of Congress: Books — FAQ — About (Preservation)

Books with old mold stains or a musty odor

For books with mold stains but no active growth, the Library of Congress recommends keeping ambient relative humidity between 40% and 65% and checking items regularly. For musty odor, it says air circulation or exposure in a cool environment at 35%–55% relative humidity can reduce odor over time. Activated charcoal or baking soda may be placed in a closed container without touching the book; check regularly for mold. Odor management does not replace action on active mold.
