Yes—on a compatible Garmin smartwatch, you can download a YouTube Music playlist over Wi‑Fi and listen without carrying your phone. Install the YouTube Music app from Garmin Connect IQ, sign in through Garmin Connect, choose a playlist, let it finish syncing while the watch is on Wi‑Fi and preferably charging, then pair Bluetooth headphones. You need YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium, and Garmin’s implementation is download-only: it does not stream music from the watch. Compatibility, storage and available controls depend on the exact Garmin model, so verify the watch on the YouTube Music provider page in Connect IQ before setup.

What do I need to download YouTube Music playlists to a Garmin watch?

Prepare the account, watch, phone and network before starting. Missing any one of these prerequisites can make the app appear installed while downloads fail or content is unavailable.

  • A compatible Garmin smartwatch: Garmin directs users to check provider-app compatibility for the exact model in Connect IQ. Support is model-specific rather than universal across the Garmin range.
  • YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium: Garmin’s June 12, 2024 launch announcement states that one of these subscriptions is required.
  • Garmin Connect on your phone: The phone is used for installation, account authorization and initial setup.
  • Bluetooth enabled during setup: Keep Bluetooth on while the phone and watch communicate.
  • Stable Wi‑Fi: The watch downloads playlists over Wi‑Fi. Streaming from the watch is not available.
  • Bluetooth headphones or earbuds: Audio plays through headphones paired directly with the watch.
  • Sufficient watch storage and battery: Capacity varies by model. Garmin does not publish one storage figure that applies to every compatible watch.

Garmin announced access to more than 100 million songs in 2024, but that catalog figure does not guarantee that every recording, region, account type or playlist will be downloadable on every watch.

Which Garmin watches support YouTube Music?

There is no single universal compatibility list that can be applied to every Garmin watch generation. Open the YouTube Music provider page in the Garmin Connect IQ Store and check your exact model before buying or configuring a watch.

How to verify a model

  1. Open the Garmin Connect IQ Store on your phone.
  2. Search for YouTube Music.
  3. Open the provider-app listing and review the supported-device information.
  4. Confirm that your exact model and software combination is listed, then check available music storage in the watch’s specifications.

Two watches in the same product family can have different app support or storage. If the provider page does not list your model, installing the app on another Garmin device will not make that unsupported watch compatible.

How do I install YouTube Music on my Garmin?

Installation starts in Garmin Connect IQ, not in the watch’s general music settings.

  1. Open the Garmin Connect IQ Store on your phone.
  2. Search for YouTube Music and select the official provider app.
  3. Choose Install and select the compatible Garmin watch when prompted.
  4. Keep the phone and watch close, with Bluetooth enabled, until installation and synchronization finish.
  5. Open YouTube Music from the watch’s app list.

The first launch presents a code-based sign-in flow. Your phone does not transfer music files; it authorizes the watch to use your subscription.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I sign in to YouTube Music on the watch?

Use the code shown on the watch and complete authorization in Garmin Connect. This links the watch to the correct YouTube account without typing a full password on the watch.

  1. Open YouTube Music on the Garmin watch.
  2. When the watch displays a sign-in code, open Garmin Connect on the phone.
  3. Tap the sign-in notification in Garmin Connect.
  4. Enter the code shown on the watch.
  5. Sign in to YouTube Music, select the intended account and accept the Connect IQ terms.
  6. Return to the watch and wait for the account information to synchronize.

Brand Accounts are not compatible with this YouTube Music sign-in flow. If your playlists seem to be missing after authorization, sign out and repeat the process with the correct personal account.

How do I download a playlist for offline listening?

After sign-in, start the download from the YouTube Music app on the watch. Keep the watch near the Wi‑Fi source and connected to power until synchronization completes.

  1. Open YouTube Music on the watch.
  2. Choose Music, Podcasts or Library from the app’s home screen.
  3. Browse to the playlist you want.
  4. Select the playlist to begin downloading it to the watch.
  5. Leave the watch within reliable Wi‑Fi range and allow it to sync changes.
  6. Keep the watch on its charger during a large download or whenever the battery is low.
  7. Open the playlist again, or open the app’s Downloads section, to confirm that the content is available locally.

Do not leave Wi‑Fi range or close the synchronization process prematurely. An unstable connection, distance from the router, unsupported songs or low power can interrupt a download or leave some items out of the playlist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why should the watch be charging?

Downloading music uses the watch’s wireless connection and storage while the app processes each item. Garmin’s guidance specifically recommends connecting the watch to power during downloads, reducing the chance that a low battery interrupts synchronization.

Can I download over my phone’s Bluetooth connection?

Bluetooth is needed for setup and device communication, but the playlist download itself requires Wi‑Fi on the watch. A phone’s Bluetooth connection is not a substitute for the stable Wi‑Fi connection required to retrieve the music.

How do I play the downloaded playlist without my phone?

Once the playlist has synchronized to the watch, pair Bluetooth headphones directly with the watch and start playback from YouTube Music.

  1. On the watch, open the Bluetooth settings and put your headphones or earbuds in pairing mode.
  2. Select the headphones from the watch’s available Bluetooth devices and complete pairing.
  3. Open YouTube Music and choose the downloaded playlist from the home screen or Downloads.
  4. Start playback and use the watch’s available playback controls.

Downloaded content can play without the phone, the phone’s Bluetooth connection or Wi‑Fi after synchronization. You still need headphones paired to the watch because the watch is the playback device.

Does Garmin YouTube Music stream, or is it download-only?

It is download-only on Garmin smartwatches. Official guidance says streaming is unavailable, so you must complete playlist downloads before leaving Wi‑Fi or leaving your phone behind.

This changes how to plan a run, hike or flight: select every playlist, album or podcast episode you may need while connected to Wi‑Fi. Starting a new stream from the trail, or filling a missing song on the road, is not supported by this implementation.

What happens when the watch is offline for a long time?

The watch can continue playing synchronized downloads without a phone or active Wi‑Fi, but Garmin says it must periodically connect to Wi‑Fi to verify account status. The documentation does not specify one universal verification interval, so reconnect the watch to Wi‑Fi regularly rather than treating downloads as permanently validated.

When you return to Wi‑Fi, allow the watch to synchronize before an important trip. This also gives YouTube Music an opportunity to update playlist changes and refresh account authorization.

Why won’t my Garmin download a YouTube Music playlist?

Most failures come from compatibility, account, network, content or power conditions. Work through these checks in order so you do not remove a working installation unnecessarily.

The YouTube Music app does not appear

  • Search the Connect IQ Store again and open the provider listing.
  • Confirm that the exact watch model is supported.
  • Install pending Garmin Connect or watch software updates, then retry the store search.

If the provider page does not list the watch, the issue is compatibility rather than a download setting.

The library or playlists are empty

  • Sign out of YouTube Music on the watch.
  • Repeat the Garmin Connect notification and code-based sign-in.
  • Select the account that actually owns the Premium subscription and playlists.
  • Do not use a Brand Account; YouTube Music’s Garmin instructions say Brand Accounts are not compatible.

The download stops or skips songs

  • Move the watch closer to the Wi‑Fi source.
  • Use a stable Wi‑Fi connection and restart synchronization.
  • Put the watch on its charger.
  • Check whether the omitted song uses an unsupported format or is otherwise unavailable to the watch app.
  • Make sure the watch has enough free storage for the playlist.

A playlist can therefore finish with fewer items than expected even when the app itself is installed correctly.

Nothing fixes the problem

Restart the watch after completing the account, network and power checks. If the failure continues, verify the exact model on the YouTube Music provider page and repeat the installation and sign-in process.

How does YouTube Music compare with other Garmin music options?

Garmin documents several provider apps as alternatives, plus a separate route for music files you already own. The most important difference is whether the content is managed by a subscription app or copied from a computer.

Option Watch compatibility and storage Subscription Offline behavior Setup and playback
YouTube Music Exact model support and storage vary; verify in Connect IQ. YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium required. Download playlists over Wi‑Fi; streaming is unavailable. Install through Connect IQ, authorize with Garmin Connect, then pair Bluetooth headphones.
Amazon Music provider app Exact model support and storage depend on the Garmin device; check Connect IQ. Plan requirements depend on the service. Use the provider’s supported offline-download features where available. Provider-app installation and Garmin headphone pairing are required.
Deezer provider app Exact model support and storage depend on the Garmin device; check Connect IQ. Plan requirements depend on the service. Use the provider’s supported offline-download features where available. Provider-app installation and Garmin headphone pairing are required.
Spotify provider app Exact model support and storage depend on the Garmin device; check Connect IQ. Plan requirements depend on the service. Use the provider’s supported offline-download features where available. Provider-app installation and Garmin headphone pairing are required.
Local MP3/WAV files Depends on the watch’s local music storage. No streaming subscription for files you already own. Files are copied to the watch and played offline. Use a computer and Garmin Express; this is separate from provider-app downloads.

The table describes Garmin’s documented categories, not a claim that every provider supports every model or identical controls. Check each provider listing for the exact watch before relying on it for a trip.

Can I load local music files instead?

Yes. Garmin supports manual music loading from a computer, which is useful when a streaming provider or playlist is not available on your watch.

  • MP3: Garmin lists standard non-DRM MP3 as a supported format.
  • WAV: Garmin lists WAV as lossless, uncompressed audio.
  • Playlist files: PLS, WPL and ZPL playlist files are not supported natively and must be synchronized through Garmin Express.
  • DRM-protected AAC: These files cannot be transferred unless the DRM is removed lawfully.

Local files do not provide access to the YouTube Music catalog or automatically mirror a YouTube playlist. They are a separate computer-sync workflow for compatible, non-DRM audio.

  • Confirm the correct YouTube account is signed in and the Premium subscription is active.

  • Play a track with the phone’s Bluetooth disabled or the phone left elsewhere to verify watch-only playback.
  • Pair and test the headphones with the watch.
  • Charge the watch and reconnect it to Wi‑Fi periodically so account verification can occur.
  • Keep local MP3/WAV files or another supported provider as a backup if a specific playlist contains unavailable tracks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does a Garmin watch need Wi‑Fi account verification for YouTube Music?

Garmin says the watch must sync over Wi‑Fi periodically, but its guidance does not give one fixed interval for every model or account. Reconnect before important offline use instead of relying on an old authorization indefinitely.

Is there one storage capacity that works for every Garmin YouTube Music watch?

No. Available music storage differs by model, and Garmin does not state a universal capacity for all compatible watches. Check the specifications for the exact device and leave room for the playlists you intend to carry.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy YouTube Music downloads to a computer or another watch?

No. YouTube Music downloads on Garmin are managed inside the provider app and are not ordinary MP3 files. Moving music between devices requires the streaming app’s own supported download process or a separate collection of compatible local files.

Will a playlist download include every song in it?

Not necessarily. Unsupported or unavailable tracks, network interruptions, distance from the Wi‑Fi source and low battery can cause items to be omitted. Open the watch’s Downloads view and check the playlist before relying on it offline.
