Minecraft shaders change lighting, shadows, water, clouds, reflections, and other visual effects. The most straightforward way to use them is Iris, a client-side shader loader that works with Java Edition and loads existing OptiFine-format shader packs without requiring OptiFine.

This guide covers the official Iris installer, manual Fabric and NeoForge installations, shader-pack installation, version matching, performance settings, and the fixes for packs or shader menus that do not appear.

Before you start

Check these requirements before downloading anything:

  • You need Minecraft: Java Edition. Iris does not run on Bedrock Edition, phones, or other mobile Java clients.
  • Your Minecraft version must be supported. Iris supports Minecraft 1.16.5 and newer, although the available installer or mod build depends on the exact version.
  • You need a supported mod-loader setup. Iris officially supports Fabric on Minecraft 1.16.5 and newer, and NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1 and newer. Forge itself is not supported by Iris.
  • Your graphics hardware must be capable of running the selected shader pack. Shaders can reduce frame rate substantially, even when Sodium makes ordinary gameplay faster.

Iris is the loader, not the visual shader pack. You still need to download a shader pack separately, such as one distributed in OptiFine shader-pack format.

Method 1: Install Iris with the official installer

The official Iris installer is the simplest option for a normal, separate Minecraft installation. It installs Iris and Sodium together, so you do not need to download Sodium separately when using this installer.

1. Download Iris

  1. Open the official Iris download page.
  2. Download the installer for your operating system. The official download provides a Windows .exe installer and a universal .jar installer.
  3. Use the download from the official Iris site rather than a random third-party “shader installer.”

2. Run the installer

  1. Open the downloaded installer.
  2. Select the Minecraft version you want to use.
  3. Click Install.

The installer adds an Iris installation to the Minecraft Launcher and includes Sodium for optimized rendering. If your desired version is not listed, check whether a later Iris release is compatible with the version you need. Iris notes that some versions may be removed from the installer when a later release can connect to servers running that version.

3. Launch the Iris installation

  1. Open the official Minecraft Launcher.
  2. Choose the new Iris installation from the installation selector.
  3. Start the game once, then close it. This creates the relevant game directories and confirms that Iris launches before you add a shader pack.

When the game starts successfully, you should be able to open Iris’s shader menu with the O key in-game. If the key does nothing, use the troubleshooting section below.

Method 2: Install Iris manually with Fabric or NeoForge

Manual installation is useful when you already manage a modded instance, use a launcher such as Prism Launcher, or want precise control over your mod files.

Fabric installation

  1. Install the Fabric Loader for your exact Minecraft version.
  2. Create or select the Fabric instance you will use.
  3. Download the matching Iris mod file and the matching Sodium mod file from a trusted source such as Modrinth.
  4. Place both files in that instance’s mods folder.
  5. Launch the Fabric installation.

Fabric Loader and Fabric API are separate things. The loader loads mods; Fabric API supplies APIs used by many other mods. Fabric API may be needed by the rest of your mod collection, but it is not a substitute for Fabric Loader.

NeoForge installation

  1. Install NeoForge for Minecraft 1.21.1 or newer.
  2. Download Iris and Sodium builds that specifically match your Minecraft version and NeoForge environment.
  3. Put the mod files in the instance’s mods folder.
  4. Launch the NeoForge profile and verify that the game reaches the title screen.

Do not add OptiFine, Canvas, or Vulkan rendering mods to the same Iris instance. These rendering systems are incompatible with Iris and may cause crashes or failed launches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where is the mods folder?

The correct folder belongs to the particular Minecraft instance you are launching. In a standard installation it is inside the Minecraft game directory. In a third-party launcher, each instance may have its own separate game directory, so copying files into the global Minecraft folder may have no effect.

With the official Minecraft Launcher, mods are not installed automatically. You must place the matching files in the selected installation’s mods folder. Launchers such as Prism may provide an “Edit instance” or “Mods” screen that opens the correct directory for you.

Download a Minecraft shader pack

Iris loads shader packs; it does not provide a complete visual pack by itself. Download a pack from its developer or a reputable shader-pack listing, and check its supported Minecraft versions, Iris compatibility, hardware requirements, and license.

A shader pack normally downloads as a .zip file. Do not put it in resourcepacks. Shader packs belong in the shaderpacks directory:

On a standard Java Edition installation, the game folder is commonly:

For a custom launcher or modpack, use that instance’s game directory instead of assuming the standard path.

Copy the pack to the correct folder

  1. Close Minecraft or leave the world and return to the title screen.
  2. Open the correct Minecraft instance folder.
  3. Create a folder named exactly shaderpacks if it does not already exist.
  4. Move the downloaded shader-pack .zip into that folder.
  5. Return to the game and reopen the shader-selection screen.

Keeping the downloaded pack as a ZIP is the safest default. However, a correctly structured extracted shader-pack directory can also be recognized. If you extract it, make sure the shader files are directly inside the pack’s folder rather than hidden inside an extra folder created by the extraction program. A common incorrect structure looks like this:

shaderpacks/MyPack/MyPack/shaders/

The pack should instead have its expected shader files at the appropriate level, for example:

Enable shaders in Minecraft

  1. Launch the Iris installation, enter a world, and press O to open the Iris shader menu.
  2. Select the shader pack from the list.
  3. Apply the change and return to the game.

You can also install a pack by dragging its file into the in-game shader-pack menu if your setup supports drag-and-drop. Some launchers provide their own shader installation feature as well.

If you are using OptiFine’s interface instead, the path is Options → Video Settings → Shaders. After selecting a pack, use Shader Options… in the bottom-right of the shader screen for pack-specific settings. The OptiFine menu’s Download button opens a shader-pack listing; it does not automatically install a shader pack.

Improve performance after enabling shaders

Shaders are demanding because they add rendering work for lighting, shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, and post-processing. Start with a lower preset, then increase quality only if frame rate remains acceptable.

Setting What to try first Why it helps
Shader preset Low, Lite, or Performance Reduces the pack’s visual workload without disabling it completely.
Render distance Reduce it by several chunks Fewer distant chunks need to be rendered and shaded.
Shadow quality or distance Lower the value Shadow maps are often one of the most expensive shader features.
Reflections, volumetrics, and depth of field Disable them individually These effects can be expensive and are not essential to basic shader lighting.

Update your graphics driver if the game crashes, displays severe rendering errors, or reports a Sodium-related failure. Out-of-date or incompatible GPU drivers are a common cause of Sodium problems.

Version and mod compatibility

Match every component to the same Minecraft version and loader environment. A current Iris build for one version is not automatically suitable for another. Modrinth’s compatibility metadata currently lists releases for Minecraft 26.2, 26.1.x, 1.21.x, 1.20.x, 1.19.x, 1.18.x, 1.17.x, and 1.16.5, but the exact file still needs to match your instance.

Indium

Indium is not universally required. Sodium’s documentation says it may be needed with Sodium 0.5.x on Minecraft 1.20 or older when other Fabric mods require the compatibility layer. It is no longer necessary with Sodium 0.6.x. Iris’s current FAQ says not to use Indium with Iris/Sodium on Minecraft 1.21.1 and newer.

Other rendering mods

  • OptiFine: Do not combine it with Iris.
  • Canvas and Vulkan rendering mods: Do not combine them with Iris in the same instance.
  • Nvidium: It disables itself while shaders are enabled, so it will not provide its normal function during shader use.
  • Voxy and Distant Horizons: They work only with shader packs that explicitly support them.
  • Core-shader resource packs: They do not work while an Iris shader pack is enabled.

Fix shaders that do not appear or do not load

No shader menu appears

This normally means Minecraft was launched without Iris, OptiFine, or another shader-capable renderer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Exit the game.
  2. Check the launcher’s selected installation or instance.
  3. Select the Iris profile created by the installer, or select the Fabric/NeoForge profile containing the Iris and Sodium files.
  4. Launch again and press O in-game.

Vanilla Minecraft does not provide the mod-based shader-pack menu.

The shader pack is missing from the list

  1. Confirm that the file is in the instance’s shaderpacks folder, not the global folder for a different installation.
  2. Check that the folder is named shaderpacks exactly.
  3. Make sure the download is actually a shader pack, not a resource pack, mod, or a web page saved as a file.
  4. Use the original .zip first rather than an incorrectly extracted directory.
  5. Reopen the shader menu after copying the file so Minecraft refreshes the list.

The game crashes when the pack is enabled

First disable the pack and launch again. Then test a lightweight pack or lower preset. If only one pack fails, it may be incompatible with Iris, your GPU, or your Minecraft version even if it works with OptiFine. Report a pack-specific problem to that pack’s developer; report an Iris loading problem to Iris support.

Also remove incompatible rendering mods, verify that Iris, Sodium, and the loader match your Minecraft version, and update the graphics driver. Do not assume that adding more compatibility mods will fix the problem—Indium, for example, can be inappropriate on newer versions.

Important misconceptions

Claim Correct information
You must install OptiFine. No. Iris loads many OptiFine-format shader packs without OptiFine.
Iris works with Forge. No. Forge is unsupported. Oculus is a separate, unofficial alternative for some Forge versions, notably 1.16.5–1.20.1.
Iris and Sodium always need separate downloads. The official Iris installer installs both. Separate files are needed for manual Modrinth or CurseForge installation.
Every shader pack must stay zipped. A ZIP is the safer default, but a correctly structured extracted shader directory can also be recognized.
Shaders work on every Minecraft edition. This workflow is for Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition or phones.

FAQ

Can I install Iris shaders on Minecraft Bedrock Edition?

No. Iris is a Java Edition client-side shader loader. Bedrock uses a separate rendering system and cannot load Java shader-loader mods such as Iris.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Do I need OptiFine to use Minecraft shaders?

No. Iris can load many OptiFine-format shader packs without OptiFine. Install Iris, launch the Iris profile, and place the shader pack in the instance’s shaderpacks folder.

Do I need to install Sodium separately?

Not when using the official Iris installer. It installs Iris and Sodium together. For a manual Modrinth or CurseForge installation, download matching Iris and Sodium files.

Why is there no shader menu in Minecraft?

You probably launched vanilla Minecraft or selected the wrong instance. Select the Iris profile created by the official installer, or launch the Fabric/NeoForge instance containing Iris and Sodium.

Why does my shader pack not appear?

Check that it is in the correct instance’s shaderpacks folder, that the folder is named correctly, and that the download is an actual shader pack. Reopen the shader menu after copying it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Iris work with Forge?

No. Official Iris support covers Fabric and NeoForge in their supported version ranges, not Forge. Oculus is a separate unofficial Forge alternative for some older versions.

Should I extract a shader-pack ZIP?

Usually leave it as a ZIP. Iris can also recognize a correctly structured extracted shader-pack directory, but extraction can introduce an extra nested folder that prevents detection.

Why did my frame rate drop after enabling shaders?

Shader packs add significant rendering work. Use a lower shader preset, reduce render distance and shadow quality, disable expensive effects, and update your graphics driver if you see crashes or rendering errors.

The Bottom Line

For most Java Edition players, the reliable path is: install Iris from the official installer, launch the created Iris profile, put a shader-pack ZIP in the correct instance’s shaderpacks folder, and enable it with the in-game shader menu. Match Iris, Sodium, the loader, Minecraft, and the shader pack to compatible versions, and remove conflicting rendering mods before troubleshooting performance or crashes.
